Poignant and thought-provoking
This book should be read right after reading James Agee's Let Us Now Praise Famous Mem. Unfortuantely I read it over four years before I read Agee's work. When I read this book--in Feb 1996--I wrote to myself: This is a book Newt Gingrich and the crazy House freshmen should read--people who are so intent that those who cannot make it on their own should not make it.

Pulitzer Prize for Non-Fiction 1991
Unfortunately, the synopsis left out that this book won the Pulitzer for Non-fiction in 1991. Maharidge and Williamson followed the footsteps of James Agee who had profiled sharecroppers during the Depression. They found their decendants, and showed that while cotton and sharecropping had died, rural poverty for these families had been passed down to new generations. The front section of the book is a series of photographs by Williamson, and they are tremendous. Moreover, in their reporting, they filled a gap left by Agee by finding a black family of sharecroppers to add to the others profiled. This is a tremendous book. It works on multiple levels, giving both the sweep of Southern social and economic history and bringing it down to individuals. Beyond that, the book is a metaphor for our own time. "If we understand the death of cotton," Maharidge writes in this book, "we understand many things about modern America." This is a tremendous work, highly readable and moving. The recognition these two craftsmen received for it is well-deserved

The Anger Habit Workbook : Proven Principles to Calm the Stormy Mind
Published in Paperback by Writers Club Press (2002)
Author: Carl Semmelroth
Amazon base price: $9.95
Average review score:

Finally - practical steps to solving this problem!
I've read a number of books on anger management over the last ten years to try and help with being irritable and too quick to anger. Most were not practical enough and, even the ones that did offer exercises, didn't seem to help in any lasting way.

This book is different though. It approaches anger from some directions that are completely new to me. Because I now understand so much more about the reasons I've been using anger I'm actually finding I can control it! Because the whole book is practical exercises (as opposed to the usual "journal after the event" type thing I'm used to seeing) it really helps develop your understanding and skills while working through it.

"The Anger Habit" is also interesting because it offers more background and examples, however this Workbook stands up perfectly well on it's own, another reason to give it a resounding five stars!

Anger Help That's Right to the Point
The Anger Habit Workbook is a useful companion book to The Anger Habit. It contains right-to-the-point instructions and exercises for cooling down anger, owning anger as your own problem, reducing righteousness and how to identify and reduce control problems. Especially helpful are the "lessons" on criticism, judgmental thinking, and self-importance. Unfortunately, the gem of the book, the treatment of hurry as anger, is hidden in the twelfth chapter instead of up front where it belongs. In using this books with clients I recommend this chapter third rather than twelfth where it is in the book. All of the chapters are pretty independent from one another so that individuals or classes can pick and choose those topics they want to work with. This book, along with The Anger Habit, is going to be around for a long time.

concise, user friendly, and greatly informative
This is truely the best book on discriminant analysis in print - designed with the researcher in mind. Several appendices include actual program output from SAS, BMDP, and SPSS, which helps the user determine what to look for and how to intepret one's statistical results. Also informative is Huberty's clear distinction between predictive and descriptive discriminant analysis. The distinction is critical in practice (many researchers still get it wrong!)- -this book wil help clarify when to use one or the other.

Statistically Significant and Practically Significant too!
I really enjoyed the book. It was an excellent reference book while I was working on my dissertation. I found his humor well placed and well suited to making his points. Well done.

Arminius - AStudy in the Dutch Reformation

A Reasoning Man
Jacobus Arminius walked a fine line between following his own reasoned theology and trying to survive in the face of a strict Calvanist political environment. Carl Bangs has provided an excellent accounting of how Arminius managed to develop and teach his beliefs in the midst of bitter opposition. Bangs clearly does not present Arminius as a hero, but rather as a man who survived on principle and faith in a hostile world. The reader is treated to a well-written sotry of one man's spiritual journey. Thank you to Carl Bangs his insights into this little known scholar.

The Story of the *Real* Arminius and the Dutch Reformation
This book gives an outstanding insight into the real Arminius (c1559-1609), a second generation Dutch Reformer and one of the most important scholars involved in codifying a biblically based alternative to predestinarian Calvinism. The book details the development of Arminius' theological position and his interactions with the clergy and laity of The Netherlands and beyond. Calvinist old wives tales about Arminius and Arminians are debunked, the story of the coming of the Reformation to Holland is followed by the introduction of hard line Calvinism by refugees from the south. Although the book focuses on Arminus' life, the epilogue deals with the events immediately following his death, such as the Remonstrance and the kangaroo court (otherwise known as the Synod of Dort) that followed where some Arminians were imprisoned and Jan van Oldenbarnevelt, the grand old man of the Remonstrants and Dutch public life, was executed on trumped up charges of treason. In the words of Bangs, the conventional history of the Dutch Reformation is that "Calvinism came in, Arminius nearly ruined it, the Synod of Dort restored it. This book is dedicated to the proposition that it isn't as simple as that." This much needed book is an outstanding read, both from a historical and theological viewpoint.

Jung on the Feminine
This volume is a selection of writings from the Collected Works of Carl Jung (1875-1961), a selection focusing on the "feminine". In Jung's psychology, the "feminine" can mean several things, including: (1) the consciousness of real females; (2) an aspect of the Unconscious in males called the "anima"; and (3) an archetype of the creative matrix of existence in all human beings. The writings in this volume discuss principally the second and third of those. These selections are in chronological order, so one can trace the development of Jung's ideas. Several mention the interactions of "anima" and "animus" (the unconscious contrasexual elements, in men and women respectively, which play a vital role in both romance and spiritual unfolding) - indeed, that is the main subject of the earlier selection from "Relations of the Ego and Unconscious" (1928) as well as the closing selection from "Aion" (1959). The long central selection, "Psychological Aspects of the Mother Archetype", and "The Psychological Aspects of the Kore" both use mythology to illustrate what Jung saw as fundamental psychological issues for all human beings. This book would be disappointing for someone looking specifically for writings on women's issues; however, anima & animus are central ideas in Jung's conception of gender relations, and his clearest expositions of those subjects are collected here. Furthermore, this book would be of great interest to anyone looking at larger issues of how the "feminine" is conceived across cultures and across time.

Astropolitik: Classical Geopolitics in the Space Age (Strategy and History Series)

Best of both worlds
The introduction of the beliefs and dictums of geopolitics, the school of thought bringing together geography and international relations, in space theory and practice was, admittedly, long overdue. This is masterfully accomplished in this book, which, while been accessible and democratic in its style, is highly informed and thought-provoking.
With the traditional struggles over terrestrial supremacy being far from over, the arena of space offers a new field for the realization of the power strategies of the contemporary "Great Powers". This is turn directly affects the power relations back home (Earth, that is), shaping thus the political landscape of the near future.
The author, drawing from a plethora of geopolitical, historical and space-related records, has produced a compelling and essential read, concretly laying the foundations for a new, inter-disciplinary and highly relevant ground.

best of emerging space power thought
Dolman's thoughts in Astropolitik should be essential reading for anyone interested in space power and its relationship to the security of freedom, democracy and the United States in the 21st century. This book will definitely be required reading for military space leaders in the future, and should be read by every space leader or enthusaist today be they from the military, civil, or commercial sectors. Realist politics and unilateral action may be disheartening to some, and many may be opposed to Dolman's 'advice' at the end, but the logic and arguments he presents are sound and must be addressed by any potential opposition.
In all, Astropolitik will become a classic of space power theory.

Beautifully written and visually gorgeous too
The author writes beautifully ... and the book is gorgeous ... it's on the top of my giftlist

Lovely coffee table book about a beautiful city.
Caren Weiner Campbell (writer) and Klaus Carl (photographer) have put together a breathtakingly beautiful coffee-table book about one of the world's great cities, Bangkok. The writing is clear and lucid, the photographs complement the text very well, and the fact that the author is my wife does not bias me about this book in the slightest. :-)

I'd have liked this book (and bought it) even if I weren't married to her.
