This excelent book is priceless in my mind.
I can easily understand why this book is so famous. Little Women is one of the best books I've ever read. Its heartwarming and spirited tale has made me laugh, and cry. There aren't words to describe its internal beaty, and I can't understand how a book like this one isn't sold for millions. It truly holds a special place in my heart.

This was a heart warming story of four sisters over time
This was a wonderful tale of four sisters growing up during the civil war. It also continues afterwards. They are also poverty stricken. Even though this book was written in the 1800's people today can still relate to the warmth and genuine personalities of the characters. It is also beautifully written and I was hanging on every word. It is a wonderful book for people of all ages.

Lives of the Athletes
The Krull and Hewitt series of books is wonderful. I'm an adult and I find them fascinating reading. There is a great amount of information about each character in only a couple of pages. The description of each athlete is informative, interesting and witty. Hewitt's illustrations are chock full of information. I found myself turning the page to look at the illustration as I read the text because I had missed some of the details when I first looked at the pictures.

The Lives of the Athletes
This book was filled with humorous, little-known trivia andanecdotes about famous sports figures. I was especially impressedwith the wide variety of athletes that were included-Sir Edward Hillary, Bruce Lee, Gertrude Ederle, and Babe Didrickson Zaharias to name a few. As a classroom tool, this book is tops! Students in my class were entranced and could hardly wait to learn more about the other figures in this book! I highly recommend this and other Kathleen Krull books!

Excellent for kids going from kindergarten to 1st grade!
I absolutely adore books like this because they take a lighthearted, yet sensitive look at concerns that are very real in the minds of small children as they enter school.

Lunch Bunnies is the story of a little boy named Clyde who harbors an irrational fear of making a fool out of himself on his first day of school, in the lunchroom. Anyone with small children can instantly relate how Clyde becomes obsessive with doing the lunchroom thing right!

The night before his first day at a new school, Clyde is seen "practicing" by carrying a tray of food. Of course there is a big brother present (Jefferson)who does his best to plant seeds of doubt in Clyde's mind and delights in tormenting the poor lad with stories of inedible food ("Mystery Goosh), and the ubiquitous lunch ladies with "bristly" faces who have all of the charm and caring of a Third World Dictator. Poor Clyde is scared to death!

My favorite part of the book was when it was time for the children to queue up, and proceed into the lunchroom. As a teacher of small children myself, I can't help but wonder if the author is not poking gentle fun at the anality of the lunchroom ritual, where children must quietly, in monk-like manner, line up and process orderly, much as inmates are required to in correctional centers.

Nevertheless, this book was a hit with my 10 year old daughter when she first started school, and it is a hit with my son, who will start first grade this fall. All children, and even some of us adults, have irrational fears that we blow way out of proportion. But the message of Lunch Bunnies, a message adults would do well to heed, is that nothing is as bad as we imagine it, and things always seem to work out just fine.

enticing and lovable story for getting ready to start school
The story is about a little bunny that is worried about carrying his full lunch tray across the cafeteria on the first day of school. It is very true-to-life when it comes to dealing with siblings and friend sort of OVER-warning you. My 4 year old loves the way the lunch ladies are described. It also is a story about friendship and helping others. I recommend this book to everyone, especially those about to start REAL school.

Making Ends Meet: How Single Mothers Survive Welfare and Low-Wage Work

Throw away all the old data and read this
Excellent statistical and investigative work that predates, but informs, much of the information we will get about the efficacy of welfare reform. Supports of both Charles Murray and Christopher Jencks will find materials in here that support and challenge their views. There are a few methodological problems with this book, however. Because the authors rely on word-of-mouth for their data sample, they over-sample those poor mothers who have social ties, and this probably skews their sample away from society's most *truly* destitude. Nonetheless, this remains an essential read given the extreme weakness of other data on the subject.

Mr. President, Members of Congress, Governors Read This Book
This book is a year late to influence the Congressional welfare reform debate. It is on time for the state level debate and policy development that must follow federal reform. This book acts as a smart bomb to mythic misconceptions, nostalgia and ideology surrounding welfare reform. Edin's research and writing were formerly available through the Wisconsin based Institute for Research on Poverty. Her work proved a significant resource in my advocacy for effective and compassionate welfare reform in Tennessee. You will encounter the real world of American poverty in this book. The President and Congress should read it with regret for their actions and Governors should read it for courage as they bear the weight of devolved welfare responsibility. Advocates and policy wonks should read it as essential.

Beautifully written
One of the best books I've read in a long time. Beautifully written and inspiring. Mrs. Scott-Payne has an amazing grasp of story telling and so intelligently weaves her history using a thoroughly poetic voice. Her descriptions of the hills she grew up in, the hard work on the farm and her mothers relentless problem-solving and faith are really quite wonderful and heartfelt. A great American document and an even greater human story. Bravo!

Mother and Daughter - Heroines Of America
This American Classic is deftly written by Essie, Scotty, Termite, and Kathryn! Her word pictures far exceed the brilliance of an exquisite photograph. The joys and sorrows faithfully capture true heroines from a hill. This gem should be read by every American
(especially Oprah and Imus)! Thank you Mrs. Payne

Memoir the way a memoir should be
I think that memoirs are the most honest form of writing. This book is an excellent memoir. So many published memoirs are written by the famous or those that think that they are especially important. There is nothing wrong with this if such authors are actually good writers. This person is an accomplished teacher, though I gather not a "famous" teacher, who is also an excellent writer. She has a fine story to tell about perserving, and acknowleding that such perservance comes from the strength one gathers from others; in this case from the wisdom and strength of the author's mother. This book isn't going to sell like a memoir by Alice Walker, but we are talking about the same kind of rare territory. I like to find good books. This book is a find.

269 pages of heaven!
On a recent flight I reached for Margaret Atwood's "The Blind Assassin," only to find I had picked up this book by mistake. Much to my surprise, it was every bit at enthralling as any of Atwood's novels. A lot of critical writing tends to be dry, but this book is like a juicy turkey sandwich with an extra dollop of mayonaise. If you like Margaret Atwood's work as much as I do, you should read this book.

Brilliant!
Margaret Atwood is one of my all-time favorite authors. I probably almost finished at least 2 of her books. But this one-this one I relished. Why? Because it is unparalleled in this world. It is one of the greatest books ever written that is not in Oprah's book club. I shall now use the thesaurus. It is recherche. It is worth its weight in gold. It is a giltedged, exquisite, in seipso totus teres atque rotundus! It is a work so profound that it outshines even Atwood herself, rendering her entirely obsolete. Read this, I insist.

A Beautifully Illustrated Action Book for Children
MULAN SAVES THE DAY is a simply written story about the Disney female hero Mulan. It is one of my niece's favorite books. I cannot wait until she is old enough to read it on her own. The fantastic illustrations that Disney is known for are prevalent on every page. A recommended classic for any public library.

A new classic: Mulan Saves the Day
Mulan Saves the Day needs to be read by the young the old, the short the tall, the boys the girls, the east the west...the people of the world...if you didn't read it as a kid and most hopefully did, read it now. It runs alongside the other greats so don't disregard it just because it's a children's book!

We Love Gustav
My 9 year old daughter enjoyed this book when we got it for her some years ago. But my son absolutely LOVES this book and tape. Many nights we will just play the music for him before he goes to bed. The music is beautiful and the story is enchanting.

Music Maximus, Mr. Mole
The Musical Life of Gustav Mole is, by far, one of the most engaging books I have ever had the pleasure to read. I purchased it for my children years ago and have since lost the cassette tape. It is my own great loss. The music and storyline complement one another with rich imagination and sweet sampling of specific instruments. I appreciate this lovely book and it's accompanying cassette-wherever it may be...
