A "must" for alternative medicine reference collections.
In the past five years herbal remedies have led natural products in the health care market, but consumers are asking new questions about the safety and effectiveness of these unregulated substances. Researchers and psychiatrists examine herbs related to mental health, telling how to assess common herbs for effectiveness, side effects, and lasting impact.

A must have!
Herbs for the Mind is an excellent, easy to read guide for navigating what is often a confusing path - that of successfully using alternative treatments for mental health problems. What to take? How much? What are the differences in brands? Such questions, and many more are answered clearly and concisely in Herbs for the Mind.

It is refreshing to learn about herbal remedies in a straighforward and scientifically-based manner. Drs. Davidson and Connor have truly done us a great service with their book. Anyone, from savvy consumers to mental health practitioners, can benefit greatly from the information in Herbs for the Mind. I have already used it, personally and professionally, with success. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in mental health!

This book changed my attitude about herbal remedies!
I have sought advice from time to time for depression, anxiety, and sleep problems, but I've never considered "alternative medicine." But I took a look at Herbs for the Mind and started reading first about St. John's wort for depression. I learned things I didn't know about depression, and I learned how and why to try this herbal remedy. The whole book, then, was of interest to me and I have enjoyed reading the history of herbal remedies and all the details of the various studies that tell us what and when herbs are useful. Everyone I mention this book to wants it! I'm really glad I found it, and I'm really glad these two psychiatrists from Duke University decided to step out of the laboratory and write it.

How To Tell A Man By His Shoes

Hilarious and perceptive
This book is both hilarious, and frightenly accurate.
Us guys have always heard women judge men by their shoes , but this woman is a 'shoevoyant' !
With uncanny accuracy she evaluates typical male shoes and reveals the personality and foibles of the men who wear them.
Kathryn Eisman is the Nostradamus of shoes !
A wonderful, entertaining, delightful read.

Men exposed and raw
Until now we boys had all types of shields from exposure -- underpants, condoms, hats, balaclavas, suncreams and so on. But girls knew about these things so we did not get away with much. Nothing like they get away with with makeup, lift up and hold apart bras (or no bras at all), no nickers (or no nickers nickers), thongs (or no thongs) etc!!

Now all we had left is revealed by this book -- our shoes. We previously thought that our charisma, bed prowess, interest in particular things or activities, as demonstrated by what we put on our feet, was a secret known only by and to us. Alas, no longer!

Although beautifully written, and powerfully illustrated, with tongue firmly planted in cheek (the facial one), this book has actually exposed us in the raw. It is so funny, yet so true. And the author has so cleverly fingered us for what we really are -- conniving, sinister, manipulative little so and so's who, unlike women with plunging necklines, bits or butts hanging out, or the shortest skirts or briefest shorts revealing everything except the little they cover, had hoped that our secrets were well tucked away, out of sight, mind, mouth and hand, if not imagination.

Now that Kathryn has destroyed that image with this great little book about how our footwear actually reveals all to all, where do we go now? Hopefully, her next book will not be about jocks, sox or box!! If it is, be ready for men to disappear from city streets altogether so that you girls will have to come looking for us instead of the other way round.

I wish I'd found this book years ago!
This book is so accurate and witty! I mean not only is it extremely funny, 'How to Tell a Man by His Shoes' is spot on when it comes to judging mens personalities. I was given it as a gift and now I've gone out and bought it for all my girlfriends for Christmas. I've started using the book and I have been attracting a much better type of man...WHY DIDN'T SOMEBODY WRITE THIS BOOK YEARS AGO AND SAVE ME ALOT OF MISTAKES!!! Ha ha. A fun read and a delicious present.

Human Capability: A Study of Individual Potential and Its Application
Published in Hardcover by Cason Hall & Co Pub (1994)
Authors: Elliott Jaques and Kathryn Cason
Amazon base price: $40.00
Used price: $22.88

Outstanding, intuitive, and well worth reading
Dr. Jaques is re-writing our understanding of the human mind and how to use it best. Forget IQ, Meyers-Briggs, and the other flim-flam out there. This book offers us the hope that we can work to our potential without overload, balance our task output and spiritual needs at work, and organize our companies as effectively as possible, without sacrificing our humanity. So far every criticism I've seen leveled at Jaques has proven baseless. High level writing may put off some, but this is great research work.

Ideal for those concerned with developing human capital.
This book presents the results of a three year study by Jaques and Cason, providing a major breakthrough in understanding human capability, intelligence, and development. An outcome of this study is further development of managerial practices to match people with roles and develop training and development programs. This is a highly interesting and informative volume that will be of significant value to all HR professionals whose agenda includes HRD and the cultivation of an organization's human capital. If you get only one fathering/parenting book, get this one!
If you get only one fathering/parenting book, this is the one to get. It covers everything from the importance of dad's involvement to child development to spousal communications and more. Bob Frank has been on the forefront of fathering trends for years and has many years of experience as both a parent and a family therapist.

Highly Recommended.

This book is gold for parents partnering to raise children.
As a 50-year old looking back at my parenting experiences, I found this book reassuring in those things that I did right and revealing about those things I could have done better. It is a book not just for fathers. It would be a mistake to give it to a father and say,"Here, this is what you must do." It is a book to be read and experienced together by parents willing to create a partnership in raising their children. The book covers concerns from before the baby's birth through young adulthood. It offers a wealth of anecdotes and practical suggestions to help parents nurture and guide their children while maintaining a balanced parenting relationship. I wish I had this book before my first child was born, but, it is not simply another "newborn parent" offering. If I had received this book at any stage of my children's development, I would have found it insightful and helpful. I plan to send it to son, daughters, nieces, and nephews. A great gift to be given by a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, or friend. Robert Frank's professionalism and caring shines through.

Every Father should read this book!
Dr Frank really understands today's family and offers valuable advice for father's. I recommend it be REQUIRED reading for every father. This book will help you become more in touch with your children and you will gain a better understanding of why your role as an involved father is so important in their life!

GOD CAN DO IT AGAIN
THIS BOOK IS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I HAVE EVER READ EVEN THOUGH MISS KUHLMAN HAS BEEN WITH THE LORD FOR YEARS SEVERAL YEARS THE WORDS ARE A GREAT UNTIL NOW ALSO. MY SISTER-IN-LAW WAS HEALED IN ONE OF MISS KUHLMAN MEETINGS IN ST. LOUIS IN 1978.

Blessed book about God's power!
The power of the Holy Spirit is here for ALL if they will only believe! I love this book about Kathryn Kuhlman's life. I have researched her myself, and have come to find out that she read a book entitled "Atomic Power with God with fasting and prayer". Kathryn Kuhlman touched the lives of many people and her best friend, "The Holy Spirit", moved mightily in her meetings. God's anointing is upon all who will read, and learn from this book. If anyone wants to find the book "Atomic Power with God", let me know, and I will e-mail you an address for it. God bless!

An unusual biography
Roberts Liardon has no doubt studied greatly into the life of this evangelist of God. However, in his book he relates Kathryn's life from a largely spiritual point-of-view. He also shares with us lessons to learns from this woman of God. A thoroughly good and edifying book to read. Roberts Liardon has the rare ability to capture the fire of this woman and then transfer it to the reader.

A Small Tiger Cat
I recently put together a box of childrens books to give as a baby shower gift for a new mother. Enlisting the help of my children (17 and 18 now) I asked that they give me a list of the titles they remembered and loved the most. Katie the Kitten topped both their lists! I still have the little golden book locked away with all the other favorite childhood possessions. I will love reading it to my grandchildren someday....

Once read, never forgotten!
My son, who is almost 18 years old, still to this day can recite the entire book from beginning to end! It made that strong of an imprint in his mind and in his heart. Thank you for writing this book. I have sent it to every new mother that I have ever known.

That was the best book I ever read.
I Love this book

Lucy's Feet

When sibling fights will stop
Every family with more than one child experiences sibling rivalry.

It's not always the same, however, when one child was adopted and another was born into the family. Sure, you still have the usual "he said," "no, she said" fights, spats over ownership of toys and games--and who gets first dibs on the sofa to read their favorite book.

But this book addresses the special kind of rivalry that arises between a child who looks like her parents and one who is shorter, more plump and has different hair. The second will one day say, "You love her more, because she came from your tummy."

Parents don't, of course, love biological children more than their adopted children. But kids need to hear that--over and over and over again.

This book helps get the message across. Lots of things happen in the story, and I won't give them away.

But this nugget is what your adopted child wants to hear: "I carried you around in my heart for a very long time," Lucy's mom assures her. "And while I waited, I thought...about how it would be when I held you close,...the songs we would sing and the places we would go. Then my heart would start beating very fast, and I would think, 'Now that's my baby kicking...away at my heart'."

When both children understand, that's when the fighting will stop. Alyssa A. Lappen

Is Adoption Bizarre?
Lucy's Feet is one of the few books which goes beyond " adoption day." It captures the subtle attachment rituals which are created over time in an adopted family. I should know. I was adopted at age 5 months. I was surprised to hear anyone describe this book as " bizarre". Lucy's Feet is adorable and " real".

To love Lucy's Feet, you don't need adoption in your life
This is a great book! The pictures and words tell an appealing story that has many levels of meaning, metaphor. My 9 1/2 year old, who is hesitant verbally, and especially so regarding her personal issues, just loved this book. The cover and title caught her eye and she curled up with it right when she handled the slim volume. And she never said a thing about having read it for several days. And, then, a propos of nothing--just like a 9 yr old!-- she initiated a long "deep" very expressive dialog which Lucy's Feet clearly had stirred in her. The meaning of a "real" family. How adopted children are matched to their real families (the ones that they know, not their genetic link). She loved looking at Lucy and noting similarities with herself. She loved Lucy's family and how it is similar (and dissimilar) to her own. If you like this age group, you'll love this book because they will love it

I really liked this story
I picked up this book because it is a Texas Bluebonnet Award nominee. I found it to be delightful and charming. I was even more delighted to find that it is a true story about the author's father. That sort of information always makes a story even more alive. I greatly enjoyed this book. For the curious, this isn't the only book the author has written about her family.

a unique and wonderful story
This is a charming, interesting book. Kids will be intrigued by Marven's adventure - not only by the notion of being sent away from his family, but also the dramatic reasons for it and the incredibly different and appealing life he gets to lead with the lumberjacks. Adults will like all that, too, and will also be won over by the warmth and, ultimately, gentless of this very unusual story. A lovely, rare find.

A warm book about a remarkable man
Marven Lasky was my mother's husband. He passed away last week at the age of 91. I only read this book in detail to find out more about him. For more about his family, see "The Night Journey", also by this author.
