A Handy Tool
I've been in the workforce for quite a while, but I found a lot of tips in this book to refresh my outlook on the workplace. Items I found particularly valuable include the passages on coping with boredom and stress at work. I also learned quite a bit from the passages on requesting a raise/promotion and how to promote yourself. Even those of us who have been pursuing professional careers for years can learn from this handy tool.

Don't overlook this one!
Okay, I am more than a few years out of college, but the thing is, I really found myself benefiting from the advice in this book. I'm not really sure how to explain it. Maybe it is because it is so well organized, researched and written. And I liked the fact that it is broken down into smaller, digestible topics. My bookshelves at home are full of dusty tomes, with lengthy dissertations on finances, work life, etc. I never read them. This book is approachable and - most important - just plain USEFUL!

Great Career Advice
I recently received a copy of this book and have found it very useful in helping to advance my career. The advice given by the authors is concrete and applicable to a wide range of job situations. For someone starting off his or her career, this book is invaluable.

The Best Chuck Wagon Stew Ever
Can't wait until tomorrow as I shall be cooking "Charlie's Chuck Wagon Stew" once again. It is without a doubt the very best stew in captivity. You cook it for 5 hours in the oven at 250 and your home becomes a place of heavenly aromas. This is a favorite of my entire family. Bon Appetit!

Unsurpassable Chocolate Chip Cookies
Someone in my college dorm had this cookbook and would often make them. By December, our entire dorm was addicted to them. I've never had more amazing cookies.

Unique, Savory, Refreshing, Flavorful
This cookbook is wonderful. Skees has a great way of using the spices to compliment any dish. I love the Spagetti Sauce, Pasticcio, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Banana Nut Bread, and Chocolate Sheet Cake, etc. This cookbook will make any amature cook feel like they are a great chef.

"God Parachutes into 2001"
In "Blue Collar God" Esau airdrops God into our world, and the splash is significant. It soaked me, anyhow, in a good way. I loved this book!

Read it once, then again to your children
The best gift you can give yourself is to read this book out loud to children. Not only are they great stories to read, but like poetry they come alive and take on a new dimension when you hear them being read aloud. I suddenly found another layer to each tale as I read them to my 13 and my 16 year old son. We have given several of them to friends as Christmas gifts. When you read the book, you will know why. The author has a great folksy style, rich with symbolism.

Hardly typical
This is not your typical Christian book. It didn't feel or sound religious, but still hit hard. Stunning word pictures. Unique settings. Esau definitely strays outside the lines...I like that. This book is certainly worth your time and $s.

a good collection
Breaking Ice is a collection of short stories from well know authors some more so than others, but all the stories were worth the read

Great Stories! Excellent introduction of new writers.
Short stories are my favorite literary genre and these are excellent! The many, varied female voices - in particular - are eye-opening and engrossing; the subjects are pertinent and realistic. The lives, thoughts, moods, and experiences of people of color are portrayed with finesse and great literary skill. This book introduced me to many new writers who surely deserve to be read. I would highly recommend this book to the study of African-American Literature in universities world-wide.

ADDICTIVE
THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD. IT HAD ME READING EVERY NITE. I LOVE THE STORY OF AISHA AND RASID. ALSO, THE STORY ABOUT A WOMAN CATCHING HER HUSBAND HAVING AN AFFAIR WITH A YOUNG AND MORE BEAUTIFUL WOMAN. I FEEL SOME OF THE STORIES SHOULD HAVE BEEN LONGER. HOWEVER, THERE ARE A LOT OF GOOD SHORT STORIES IN THE BOOK

Cuba linda
How has a tiny island had such a great impact on world culture? With it's evocative and poetic photo essays and personal almost intimate written essays about Cuba, Cuba On the Verge goes a long way to making you feel in your bones the potent Cuban 'ajiaco' the mixture of cultures and the vibrancy of the life and art it produces. I particularly enjoyed the interview with Chucho Valdes and Cuban popstar 'el Tosco' which helps us move beyond the limiting view of Buena Vista Social Club as the only Cuban music that most people in the world are aware of. Cuba is not caught in a fifties timewarp as most articles and books you read these days would have you believe, and Cuba On the Verge shows that.

a collage of passion
A huge & quietly engrossing collection of essays & pictures by leading Cuban & American writers & photographers, offering unique insights into life in this fabled island nation.

Each essay & photo series delights--thinking men & observant women--about rituals & revolution; of struggling for love & beauty; the music of Cuba, focusing on Chucho Valdés; sugar mills & tobacco farms; the faces of change; life among the ruins; the emerging middle class; of being born too late for the revolution; of landscapes & mythology; how a Cuban comes home; letters from exile.

From the pens of Jon Lee Anderson; Russell Banks; Avilio Estévez; Abelarde Estorino; Cristina Garcia; Pablo Medina; Ana Menéndez; Mayra Montero; Nancy Morejón; Achy Obejas; Susan Orlean; Hugo Perez; Antonio José Ponte; Eduardo Luis Rodriguez & Reina Maria Rodriguez.

From the cameras of Niurka Barroso; Ernesto Bazan; Virginia Beahan; Carlos Garaicoa; Kastia Garcia Fayat; Abigail Gonzáles; Andrew Moore; Inge Morath; Abelardo Morell; René Peña; Manuel Piña; Silvia Plachy; Adalberto Roque; Fazal Sheikh & Carrie Mae Weems.

William Kennedy's Introduction is written in the style of a Miami newsman, who has written about Cuba for decades & now at last he's going to the "incipient phoenix, an exotic ambiguity...one of the major social experiments of the twentieth century..." & his excitement is palpable.

Playwright Arthur Miller's Epilogue is rich in impressions & American points of view of an encounter with The Leader, President Fidel Castro.

Tribute to a culture
We were drawn to the title of this book simply because of our interest in Cuba and its history and hardships. Hoping to someday visit, we were intrigued by the visual and literary representation of the story. The photography is provocative with components of sadness and pride evident in the faces that are looking back at the camera. What is remarkable is the tragedy of a once beautiful country. The destruction of Cuba and the hopelessness of its people are vividly depicted. Yet the pride and strength that is intrinsic to Cuba's culture fosters growth and change.

A fun romp
These books (Truckers, Diggers, and Wings) are a fun romp! Well thought out, well told, with a liberal dose of humor. If you have read any of Terry Pratchett's "Disc World" books, you'll love this light hearted series. ... You can purchase them from Amazon.co.uk for ... plus shipping. You might find a few words spelled differently than standard US English but so what?

Impossible to put down!
This the second book of the Bromeliad trilogy (following Truckers and followed by Wings).

After escaping from the doomed Store of Arnold Bros (est. 1905), the nomes find refuge in a disused quarry. And although life's harder Outside than it was in the Store, after a while everything goes well... until they find out that the quarry is going to be reopened.

At the same time, they also learn that Grandson Richard, 39, an heir to the Arnold Bros (est. 1905) fortune, is going to Florida to watch the launch of his first telecom satellite. To Masklin it's an oportunity to send the Thing back into space where it could contact the Ship which will bring them back HOME. And so he sets out, with Gurder and Angalo, on a trip to the airport.

And as the rest of the nomes are waiting for them to come back, their food reserves are inexorably running out and the humans' presence is starting to be a real nuisance. Are they going to flee and hide or are they going to stand up to them?

As expected, Diggers is brilliant and extremely funny. And again, the confrontation between the nomes' and our view of the world is the source of many of the typically "Pratchettian" puns we've all come to love!

More big problems for little people.
In Truckers, Masklin rescued the other nomes from the store before its demoliton. Then, he led them to a quarry, a place that they could call home. But now, Masklin realizes that the nomes can never really be at home in the human's world, so he sets off to find the airport, and the spaceship that brought the nomes to Earth some 15,000 years ago. But for the nomes left at the quarry, now led by Grimma, things go from bad to worse, and worse still. Where is Masklin, and who will save the nomes?

This book is as funny as the last one. The nomes are so very human, and yet so very different. Plus, the story kept you at the edge of your seat, right up to the surprise finale. What a wonderful book!

One Amazing guy
I read this book when I was in the Fourth grade. You are probablly wondering why such a young girl grabbed ahold of this wonderful book. Well Terry Thomas is my Step Father. Once I read this book it showed me that love really does exist and some people take it for granted. I have listened to Terry tell me the story of him and Nancy many times. Everytime I hear it my heart aches. I hope when people read this book they understand life can get a lot worse. I definantly think this book should come back to print!

The Power of the Written Word
I read this book in 1983. A friend of mine loaned it to me when I
was going through a very trying time in my life. I was trying to make a very important decision after 10 miserable years of marriage. Even though I was a christian, I thought that divorce was the only option left. I was wrong. This book brought me back to focus on the love I still felt for my husband. It was this true story of two people who were devoted to live the way they believed. With honor.
This heart wrenching true story saved my marriage. I can say in
all honesty, if anyone doubts the power of how words can change
things, then they should read this book. It makes you think about
just how precious life is.
My husband and I will celebrate 30 years of marriage, and part of that success is due to Terry Thomas, who was courageous enough
to write about is pain and loss.
I hope that this book will be brought back into print.
I have owned several copies but, I have given them away to others, who needed it, as I did once.I would like to own a copy to keep in my library. Please let me know if one is available.

Such Pure Love
I read this book after it was first published in the '70's. It left an impression on me which I have never forgotten of such love and devotion of two people - not only to each other, but to God and their families. Everytime I drive through Tifton, Ga., I think of the crash that night in a driving rainstorm and my heart aches for them and what might have been. This is the most tender love story I have ever read. I have misplaced my book and feel I need to read it again. Hopefully, Amazon.com can find me another copy.

Blood Sinister

Another Strong Entry in this Series
Bill Slider keeps getting better and better and his police crew are also growing and maturing. They are half the fun in these stories. This series should be read in order because the development of the characters is so well laid out from one book to the next. In this book Bill is trying to find out who raped and murdered a well-known journalist. Don't forget to read the chapter headings because Ms. Harrod-Eagles is still in fine form with the puns. Even her titles have hidden meanings which you will discover when you find out who committed the crime this time. There are lots of red herrings and lots of interference by principles in the crime to help keep the murderer a secret until you near the end. Very good series! My only complaint is the way this book leaves the reader hanging at the very end regarding Bill's and Joanna's relationship. Now that Bill's divorce is final, things should be going smoothly for him and Joanna, but that unfortunately is not the case. We'll have to read the next one to keep up to date on that relationship.

cynthia is outstanding
This gal is the real goods, she delivers. Cynthia has the knack for reconstructed cliches and malaprops. There are lots of chuckles, out loud laughs and guffaws. For some of the fun you have to have a frame of reference, a history, of course, but you will not be disappointed even when you don't know what you are missing. The plot is nicely constructed and the conclusion credible, which is not true of much of the dreck on the market today.

8th in the Bill Slider Series -- Maybe Best Yet!
I'm so glad I stumbled across Cynthia Harrod-Eagles, a prolific British writer I'm guessing not well known here in the colonies, despite her portfolio of some 30+ books counting both these mysteries and over two dozen historical romances. I've only tried Bill Slider so far, but he's a wonderfully low-profile hero in the style of Dick Francis' leading men: guys you either want to be like (men) or want to be with (women). That our author can get that feeling so consistently over eight stories is impressive, despite plots that are entertaining and often complex enough to bewilder til right near the end.

The series is best read in order, because part of the fun is following Bill's personal life as his somewhat flawed marriage is tested (uncharacteristically for our straight arrow) by a lovely violinist that turns his head. His unattached "playboy" sidekick Atherton has much the same "trouble" and the interplay between these two men makes interesting counterpoint to the thorough police work otherwise on display. Indeed, we have come to know and like many of the precinct's supporting players beside our leading men.

I'm guessing Harrod-Eagles has either real life experience in an orchestra or a close friend in one, because her description of the lives and times of the players, and the politics and "affairs" in the symphony, are right on. (If that's "just" the result of research, I'm astounded!) Maybe best of all, some personal dilemmas for Joanna (our musician) add some real kick to the story, right up to a cliff-hanger ending that can only be resolved in the next book -- hopefully being penned as we speak!

So "Blood" seems to have it all: a mystery and plot that leads us here and there right to the end; compelling developments between Bill and Joanna that make us worry; and story that entertains on almost every page. Sounds like 5-stars to me!!

Bluewater Hunting & Free Diving
Published in Hardcover by BlueWater Freedivers (1995)

Best book of its kind.
I've only moved "off the shelf" and into the blue this year, having used a sling since childhood. Had I read this book earlier I would have had many more years' experience by now. It covers a range of topics and is well illustrated. A good practical guide to the sport spiced with enough of the sort of chilling (sharks, line tangles, blackout) and inspiring (marlin hunters, jewfish hunted by sound alone, bluefin rocketing by at 50 mph) story-talk to captivate even my nondiving friends. I've read many of these stories out loud to hushed circles of friends. The comments on safety are reasonable and reflect a good respect for those who've lived a life in the water. A good job all round; I look forward to Terry's next.

Truly incredible tales
I am an avid scuba diver who likes to hunt for lobster and fish. I was not prepared for what I found in this book. The casual approach to entering the ocean food chain to hunt large tuna and marlin among large great white sharks left me wondering if Terry Maas (the author) has a death wish. Nevertheless, I think I will try this sport on a smaller scale and hopefully venture to south of Cabo to try my hand at large yellowfin. I found this book to be very matter of fact about a not so standard way to kill some time on your vacation. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves diving, extreme adventure, and the ocean.

A comprehensive guide for intermediate and advanced spearos
This book contains a plethora of interesting stories,as well as useful information for the aspiring blue water hunter. One learns that not all spearfishermen desire to shoot everything in the sea, but that their involvemnt in the preservation of the ocean's resources is tempered with an attitude of respectful game gathering.
