Five years old, but still very very topical !
The complex domain of US - Cuban relations is changing every day, with new developments on both sides in terms of policy, which in turn affect the Cuban economy, society in Cuba, perspectives for future change, etc. Nevertheless, this book already back in 1997, managed to set an excellent framework on the theme of US - Cuban relations on the long term. Contrary to what one might expect, the fact that five years have now elapsed, has not made this book outdated. On the contrary, we can see indeed that some of the author's predictions became reality. Altogether, even today this remains a great book as a starting point to approach and study this fascinating and ever-changing topic. For sure, a new edition could add some interesting information to this study. Yet, for the purposes it sets itself, this book is still very very up-to-date and topical, and will likely remain so even after Castro is gone. While being an academic book in the field of political sciences and international relations more specifically, this is also a book about history, and as such will be invaluable for scholars of Cuban history at any time.

Informative, concise, accurate, and excellently written
In such a short book, with indeed only three chapters besides the introduction and conclusions, the author has managed to put together, in a concise and excellently presented way, the facts and data of which the reader must be made aware, the various possible interpretations of these facts, as well as the author's own interpretations and analysis. The book is an excellent review of existing material on the subject (a great amount of research and critique has obviously gone into it), as well as a wonderful analysis of this material, with the addition of original material from the Cuban media and interviews, and the author's own points of view, which are always presented against any possible counter-arguments. All in all, a great start for anyone who would like to explore the exciting subject of US
- Cuban relations.

An academic study, and a witty analysis of Cuban society
In this brief yet dense academic study, the author manages not only to expose data and propose his views on the issue, but also to capture the reader's analysis in a way that few very academic books can. While it tells of the intricate relation between the US embargo against Cuba and what happens in the island, the book also tells a lot on the repression of Castro's regime over. With crystal clarity and even some razor-sharp sarcasm, the author manages to identify some crucial features which make Cuban society unique, which can in fact be traced back to the horrible effects of US policy on the Cuban people, ensued by Castro's manipulation of this. All in all, Cuban policy can often be regarded as a big farce. While we condemn Castro's dictatorship or / and the US embargo, and in either case we share the suffering of the Cuban people, this book helps us see all this in a thrilling new light, filled with some witty humour and a good deal of sarcasm, making the book wonderful reading altogether.

When the Members Are the Missionaries: An Extraordinary Calling for Ordinary People

A book to inspire anyone...
I found Wayne Schwab's book to be one of thoughtful inspiration. Too often we assume it's the clergy's 'job' to set us on the right path in living a godly life -- yet Schwab shows us how that responsibility is ours. His tone is conversational and informative, and his book is peppered with lots of personal stories, so you can really relate to what he's saying on a visceral level. A much needed book for our times!

A Lay Person's Dream!!
Most lay and clergy in my experience do not have my dream of our functions in Christ's world: Christ's people doing His work in the world with the church as support and encouragement for His people in that work. At last, there is book/manual that describes inspiring laity who are living that dream and a road map for how that dream can be realized for all with a transformation in the institution, the Church. Schwab has written a book for both the laity and the clergy, reaching both with clarity and practicality.

In 40 years as an Episcopalian and 6 years on a Diocesan Commission on Ministry and 3 years as Chair of the Commission on the Ministry of the Laity, my frustration has been enormous, because my dream was so far from what was happening in the Church . Now, there is hope at last!!!

All Christians on Mission
The emphasis of this book on all Christians as "missionaries" with a mission in life is very important, and the stories help bring home that reality and opportunity for others. I particularly appreciated the stress on the manner in which congregations can help nurture and strengthen Christians for their "offices" - for their "daily arenas" of missionary activities.

Reality Based Food for Thought
This is a straightforward series of reality statements that will awaken your soul.

Excellent For Maintaining Perspective
I love listening to some of the ideas on this disc right before meditation or when I retire for the evening. Dyer suggests listening to just one transforming though per day, but if you've read a few of his books then most of these thoughts you will already be familiar with. The disc then serves as an excellent reminder and will help the ideas soak into your subconscious. The background music on it is nice.

Highly inspirational and uplifting.
Highly inspirational and uplifting. Books and tapes by Dr. Wayne Dyer have inspired me to write. I am an author myself on Amazon. Full of wisdom, self-empowerment, and encouragement.

Great book on non-dual, impersonal Oneness of All
This is a great book. Though I am a student of Hindu Advaita Vedanta for some time, reading this book has been illuminating. I seem to find some answers to my long bothering questions, and more importantly drawing me to a new level of understanding and practical approach.

The repeated attention paid to 'Impersonal Consciousness' and bringing it to answer every question is really superb and essentially serves the purpose of teaching non-duality. This 'Impersonal Consciousness' and the explanation of 'Karma' themselves should be sufficient 'Teaching' to transform our out-look to life and practice to realise our nature. There are other very subtle important teachings which are spread every where for a careful reader. Though initially I had some 'non-acceptance' in me for some of these ideas, as I am a student of Traditional Hindu Advaita Vedanta, as I read through the book carefully, I am quite helped by the teaching.

I would recommend this to any religious, irrelegious, or non-religious person. It was illuminating joy reading the book.

Fascinating and compelling
I read this book after attending a talk by Wayne Liquorman. Wayne recommended it as an introduction to a philosophy that he had adopted. I bought it because I felt upset and threatened by the ideas that Wayne presented. I wanted to have the philosophy in writing so I could find fault with it and remain attached to other ideas. But the book made more sense than those other ideas, and I have since decided that Ramesh and Wayne present the most reasonable model of reality that I have come across. This book was the catalyst for a transformation in my beliefs, and I am grateful! I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is open minded and trying to make sense of the world. Thank you, Ramesh!

If it's good for him then it's good for the rest of us!
Suffice to say that this book is recommended to everyone by Leonard Cohen. He was moved enough by his philosophy to travel to India and meet Balsekar in person and spend sometime studying with him.

A Manual For Success
I had the golden opportunity to hear Rabbi Dosick, give a lecture several years ago at Temple Bet Breira in Miami for their annual "Scholars in Residence" Week. Rabbi Dosick touched upon several things as it relates to this informative book about parenting. Golden Rules is not a preachy, rigid stance but a personal, yet provocative approach that parents can take to show their children how they are an important part of the world society and how their contribution can provide a means to help the less fortunate. One walks away from this book with a somber sense that our respect of God is determined by how much we're devoted to service.

A Great Book!
I bought one after renewed twice from the local library. It's the book that I read it repeatly and learned something new each time. Great stories that children love.

Good for every soul
This is an amazing book for children of all ages! We all need to be reminded of these ethical values and Rabbi Dosick gives hundreds of parables which come to mind each day as we do our daily duties. Along with the parables, each chapter ends with a story to read with your children and age appropriate questions for discussion. My children love listening to the parables and my six year old son remembers them and talks to me about them when he see's their application in his little life. I highly recommend this book!

The Flight of Dragons
Published in Paperback by Overlook Press (01 April, 1998)
Authors: Wayne Anderson and Peter Dickinson
Amazon base price: $24.95
Used price: $32.00
Average review score:

The book and the movie are DIFFERENT.
Okay, let's set the record straight here. "The Flight Of Dragons" _has no plot_. Some of these reviews are referring to the wonderful characters, amazing plot line, etc. Obviously, these people haven't read the book. This book is a scientific view on how dragons could have actually existed. It gives theories on how they breathed fire, flew, lived, etc., drawing on evidence from story lore and legend. Now, for those of you who are thinking of the _movie_ "The Flight Of Dragons", yes, the movie was based on this book. But it was only based on it in terms of how the dragons were designed. The (very) basic plot and the wonderful characters were taken from Gordon R. Dickson's amazing book "The Dragon And The George". But the book "The Flight Of Dragons" is much different from the movie. For one thing, Peter Dickenson views dragons as lethargic beasts with a dull intelligence. He included a chapter on dragon-slaying, which, to me, was something of the last straw. Also, some of the pictures done by Wayne Anderson are horrific. I especially "enjoyed" the photos in the back of art from around the world----one had a picture of a troll-like "dragon" eating a man's head! . . . Now, don't get me wrong. This is a good book. Some of the pictures are fantastic. And most of Peter Dickenson's theories----especially the one about why there are no fossils of dragons------were really neat. And I love his saying: "Remember. The dragons live. Inside us." It's a decent book. But I spent nearly a year trying desperately to get my hands on a copy, and while it is interesting and a valuable addition to my collection of dragon lore, I was disappointed. But maybe I shouldn't judge something on my own expectations (obviously). But I did want all to understand . . . the book and movie are very different. If you want to re-meet the characters of "The Flight Of Dragons" from the movie, read "The Dragon And The George", an excellent book. And give the book "The Flight Of Dragons" a try. Just don't set your expectations too high!

Beautiful and Captivating
This book breathes new life into the world of fantasy. It is a compelling read, but backed with scientific evidence and explanation to make it credible. Also, it is a beautiful book with lots of full-color pictures and illustrations. Whether you believe in dragons or not, The Flight of Dragons is interesting and a wonderful conversation-piece. The book deserves more recognition than it has gotten in the U.S., and I consider myself extremely lucky for having found it in a second-hand bookstore and picking it up there. I had never heard of it before, and have never seen another copy, but I haven't been disappointed. And, by the way, I am NOT interested in selling mine!

Bravo to Dickinson for giving dragons a fighting chance!
This is a book for all of you out there who know that dragons are more than just fairytale creations to frighten small children. And for those of you who ARE convinced that dragons belong purely to fantasy, I invite you to come, read, and have your mind changed by this beautiful, engagingly written book. (It's science-friendly, too!) Peter Dickinson does a wonderful job of building up a theory by which dragons could once have truly roamed the skies and terrorized innocent villagers. His ideas are sound, his message clear, and through it all he maintains a tone which keeps the reader asking for more.

EVERYONE should read this book...not just parents!
If you are looking at this review and care about your children or even about yourself, BUY THIS BOOK! I was at a low point in my life, wondering which direction to take and starting to lose sight of who I am. While browsing through parenting books, I found this amazing book and have been highlighting left and right. I discuss it with everyone I can and have found it to be immensely helpful in re-directing my own way of thinking. Postive thoughts surround me, I no longer feel pity on myself, I take action!I am happy to say that although it will make a difference in how I parent my daughter, it already has changed me and how I think. I realize now that I should not allow situations to control me, and this book is wonderfully adept at helping with this. If you have unbridled anger or frustration...this book is for you. Share this book with everyone you know, it will only affect them postively. Although there were some issues which I do not agree with personally, I did understand and respect all of Dr. Dyer's thoughts. It is a powerful and enriching book, which will enhance your life and that of those around you. We need more like this in such trying times.

This book is not just about parenting
I think this book is really about what we want for OURSELVES. All parents want the BEST for their kids but they rarely apply it to themselves. This book teaches you how to model the most healthy, sane and life-affirming behavior and attitudes so your children will learn these attitudes. The only way to effectively model this behavior is to actually become this kind of person ourselves. It requires an open mind toward one's own behavior, thoughts and beliefs. Here are the chapter headings:
"I want my children to value themselves
I want my children to be risk-takers
I want my children to be self-reliant
I want my children to be free from stress and anxiety
I want my children to have peaceful lives
I want my children to celebrate their present moments
I want my children to experience a lifetime of wellness
I want my children to be creative
I want my children to fulfill their higher needs and to feel a sense of purpose"
Don't you want to live this way too? I know I do.

My Mom Swears by This Book
My mom is in the childcare business. She has been using this book as a guide to help her rear happier children, with less conflict and more support. She has done an amzing job with some tough to handle kinds...who thanks to her and the help of the book are no longer so tough to handle, and are happier and more cooperative.

To this day this is our favourite gifts to new moms we know :)

One of the essentials for all hockey players and coaches
This book covers all of the basics very well. Essential reading material for any level of hockey player and coach. I have read it over and over again.

The best book on hockey ever!
When I wanted to improve my game I asked people around for the best book to get. They recommended this one and after seeing myself improve I recomend it to.

the single best source for the coach, player or fan of the game
from basic conditioning to advanced play development, this book will help the coach bring his players up a level. the player reading it will see improvement in their game. the drills are explained in a clear manor and will definately improve the ability of the player. the section on play making is outstanding. when teaching some of the plays to my bantam and midget players, it was like a light bulb went on in their heads when they caught on to the play. this is a must have book for any one involved in the game of hockey.

What a Neat Book
I read this slowly, picking it up now and then, going through one brief
chapter at a time. I always found a smile on my face and a bit of
wisdom in my soul. This is an eloquent, poetic book that I would
highly recommend.

Muller starts with some history of what the Sabbath
has meant in the Jewish and Christian religions and how it has been
practiced through the centuries. But this is not dogmatic reading at
all. The author uses the word Sabbath as a metaphor for rest in our
lives - whether it's an actual day, morning ritual, or simply a few
moments alone during a busy day. He reminds us that there is a reason
that this Sabbath concept has been such a strong component of life in
our past, and warns us against the modern trend towards constant
activity.

Chapters are filled with personal experiences, stories of
others, poems, and suggestions for incorporating mindful rest into our
lives.

I look forward to rereading this numerous times in the future.

SABBATH, Restoring the Sacred Rythem of Rest
A profound experience reading Muller's work. I am in recovery and activily pratisipate in the program Alcoholics Anonymous ergo I am anonymous and will not identify myself. I write and experience a lot of speritual moments in my writing. I was moved very deeply by the depth of the book and how the excercises when practiced brought the peace of a living God into my presence.

Being addicive in nature I am a workaholic as I found my true calling at the age of 45. I love what I do and am so enamored with it I work way beyond the physical limits of my aging body. This book and it's return to basic living paterns has resored my energy and awareness of the closeness of my Power Greater Than All. Now twenty odd years in a program that saved my life I have more, love more, give of myself more as a result. This book now has taken me back to the basics of caring for myself first.

I am renewed, refreshed and with the help of the reading herein, I am in a new place with more vigor to give of myself. I am greatful for the opportunity to share this.

Sabbath: Restoring the Sacred Rhythm of Rest
This book has helped change my life and my focus from workaholicism back to joy of living and family, from exhaustion and fatigue to faith in restoring the Sacred Rhythm of Rest. As other reviewers have mentioned, Wayne Muller's writing also stirred my soul and restarted the sacred rhythm set within. I have read many parts of this books aloud to my family, and have given copies to family and friends. All have received it with enthusiam. Some parts brought tears to my eyes as Muller's words flow gently on target in each chapter, and I felt the grief and relief that comes from knowing the truth (and it does set you free). This book is well written, easy to read, and should appeal to people of many faiths. It is a simple, but yet profound book. Made so, because the author is a skilled writer in reaching across the diverse realm of the manmade world to point out the conflicts modern men and women have created at many levels; conflicts which block out or otherwise have many of us unaware of the true value of Sabbath and the sacred rhythms established by the Creator at all levels in all living things. This book will engage you with well chosen quotes, poems, and well written thoughts on the Sabbath. This is a must read!
