a wonderful wonderful book
I've worked for years in the extensive gardens of children's book author/illustrator Tomie dePaola (26 FAIRMOUNT AVENUE and other books). This book has helped me appreciate what I do and has helped me "see" the value and the beauty in plants and shrubs and colors, etc., that I never before saw or understood. It's a wonderful book.

A 12 Month Delight
Never did I expect to be so conflicted about why I love a book. This one has it all. Such a beautifully written love story about a garden and the shared lives of two people who have a vision and the courage to create a truly great landscape. The sheer volume of information about specific plants and how they are used are invaluable to me. To have all this knowledge presented in such a beautifully written book is such a gift. I've already read it twice. I've had my copy of this book for two years now and it wouldn't surprise me if I picked it up for a fresh reading sometime this winter.

18 Miles From Earth : Stories From Barber Shops, Front Porches and Supper Tables
Published in Paperback by Total Life Publications (20 November, 2000)
Author: Wayne Bristow
Amazon base price: $18.00

A mighty big kick out of Muleshoe!
We Texans can get mighty nostalgic about our country. When I was reading "18 Miles From Earth" I thought I could get a whiff of some good old Texas "blow dirt". Wayne Bristow must not have talked a lot in that barber shop of his dad's cause he sure "soaked up" a lot of stories. Anybody from that neck of the woods could sure identify with all these tales. I laughed till my sides ached, and relived many long forgotten memories. The stories are short enough you can lay the book aside often, and then go back for more. Good, like a cup of strong Texas coffee.

Abraham Lincoln: From Skeptic to Prophet
Published in Hardcover by Mayhaven Pub (01 September, 1995)
Author: Wayne Calhoun Temple
Amazon base price: $29.95
Collectible price: $35.00

Extremely heavily researched
Abraham Lincoln: From Skeptic To Prophet by Wayne C. Temple (historian and former editor of the "Lincoln Herald") is a uniquely comprehensive study of an often-overlooked aspect of the man who saw the United States of America through the turmoil of the Civil War. This scholarly and seminal treatise focuses in-depth specifically upon President Lincoln's religious views. Extremely heavily researched, filled with references to primary sources and black-and-white photographs of portraits, places, and documented evidence, Abraham Lincoln From Skeptic to Prophet leaves no stone unturned in its search to uncover precisely what Lincoln believed during the different phases of his life. Abraham Lincoln: From Skeptic To Prophet is an impressive work and a "must-read" for anyone studying the life, times, and personality of Abraham Lincoln.

Accelerated Testing : Statistical Models, Test Plans, and Data Analyses
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (1990)
Author: Wayne Nelson

best statistical account of accelerated testing
Nelson is a private consultant who has worked on countless practical problems in reliability from his consulting practice and previous employment at General Electric. He is an excellent lecturer and writer. His earlier book "Applied Life Data Analysis" was considered to be one of the best texts on reliability.

This book is very thorough in its treatment of all aspects of accelerated testing and is filled with many good references. Nelson carefully defines the mathematical models which consist of two components, (1) an acceleration function which describes how the mean lifetime changes as a function of the acceleration factor and (2) a probability distribution that explains the random variability of outcomes at each acceleration factor. A particular mean function could be the Arrhenius relationship and the probability distribution could be exponential. Hence there is not a single Arrhenius acceleration model but rather an Arrhenius-exponential, an Arrhenius-lognormal or an Arrhenius-Weibull model. The book is filled with interesting theory and examples. Nelson provides excellent practical guidance based on his wealth of experience.

Technical Review of ASDs & Stebbins
I have read his book and found it very focused on the technical side of ASDs. The book can be read by technical readers who have "been there- done that" as well as new to the field technicals learning what ASD actually does. Mr. Stebbins has written many articles on various technical subjects. I have always found his material a great read.

The Adventures of Nicholas
This story provides a plausible explanation for Santa Claus, why he wears a red suit, makes toys, has reindeer, goes down chimneys, etc. I recall reading it many times while growing up; and as I was just finding out that my parents might be "helping" Santa, I was comforted by this book...as it even explains why parents would need to help. I think this is most appropriate for those at the tender age where they may not believe but still wish they could... and for anyone who loves a heartwarming Christmas story.
