A beautiful and haunting tale...
This is a rich and textured memior of youth in the South. Wayne Greenhaw is one of the great voices of Southern writers. This is his most personal and engaging work. If you love Harper Lee, Pat Conroy, and Truman Capote, you will love this book.

Greenhaw At His Best
Readers fond of memoirs will not want to miss this one. It is highly imaginative, moving, beautifully written and immensely satisfying. Wayne Greenhaw has written many books, a wide variety, but he has never written one quite like this one, and I guarantee you'll love it. It would be perfect as a gift for someone you love.

A gem of a book. Every Delphi developer should have a copy.
Once in a while you'll come across a book that you can't put down. Well, this is it. It doesn't matter if you're using Delphi 1 or Delphi 5, this book has enough tricks and how to's to pay for itself 10x over. It's well organized, concise, plenty of code snippets, and lots of working programs on the CD-Rom. If you want a fun read and like magical code, this How To book will put a smile on your face and add a shine to your programs!

Don't leave the bookstore without it!
Once in a while you'll stumble across a gem of a book that you can't put down. This is it! If you ever get to a point in your program that you think you need to put some pizzazz in it, this book might be just what you're looking for.

It has something for everyone. It's chaulked full of usefull tidbits that you can add to any application. I'll list a few entries from the table of contents so you know what I mean:
"Size a form's control automatically"
"Add search and replace to my editor"
"Remember the sizes and locations of my forms"
"Make the ENTER key act like the TAB key..."
"Determine system resouces and display them"
"Modify menus at run time"
"Create a readme file viewer"
"Fade one picture into another"
"Play wave and midi files"
"Make a customizable toolbar like Delphi's"

It has 103 of these "How To's" do make your application really shine. Two or three of these features would pay for the book. That's like getting the other 100 for free!

Even though this book is written for Delphi 1, the majority of these tricks will also work for Delphi 2. All of the sample code is on the CD-Rom so you can easily see it working before you install it into your application.

If you want to spruce up your application, I definitely recommend this book. You'll also improve your Delphi techniques by learning how some of these "tricks" are performed. This book is a keeper. Don't leave the bookstore without it!

Making it look easy!
Often one of the most overlooked aspects or genres of photography is the ability of a photographer to grab a certain nanosecond of time and leave behind an impression of a people or a culture that anchors that people in time forever. It looks easy because there are so many talented photographers who have left behind haunting images in magazines such as National Geographic, Look, Life, etc. Add Wayne Schoenfeld to the mix.... In this book this California photographer brings us two incredibly different cultures as Turkey and Cuba, somehow unified by his gifted camera in this book are the serene, hard eyes of Turkish men and also the naked playfulness of blonde peasant Cuban children in Pinar del Rio province - these are disparate subjects that in a rather unusual manner come together beautifully as do many others, in this excellent book.

Elegant insight
One of the most dificult things to do in photography, or any of the visual arts, but especially photography, is to capture the fleeting moment, the spirit of the subject. In this book, California photographer Wayne Schoenfeld not only accomplishes that task rather easily, but he also delivers a spectacular suite of works of two peoples cultures apart and yet bonded by the realities of a a world where their galvanized, often imposed cultures and values are being revised and changed before their eyes and lives. Excellent book!

A Book to Return To
I was given a copy of this book shortly after it was released in 1993, and I loved it. I am just now (8/5/00) reading it for the third time, and it is as enjoyable now as it was the first two times. As in all heroic fantasy, the climax of the story is readily obvious, but the plot twists involved will keep you guessing about the details. The character development is very good; I can see the brothers Podlowsky in a number of my friends (or is it the other way around?).

E X C E L L E N T !!!!
This is a tale of two Brothers from our world who are transported to a land of magical wonders and dangers, both are skilled martial artists, and survivalists with a range of skills that will save their lives and others that they meet in the strange land of Palenoc. If you like action, dragons and all manner of beasties and ghosts, both evil and not so evil, then this book is for you, pure enjoyment is what Id call it, full of well rounded characters, just the right hint of mystery, and of course its got martial arts, (gotta love that!!!} which means a lot of A-- kicking!!! (A movie please!!!!} So I do hope you sit down and curl up with a cup of something and enjoy the next few hours, you wont regret it.

Bustin' down the door

This book is pure stoke!
This is a great book, for surfers and non-surfers alike. An exciting and humorous, and at times sad, book to read. Rabbit's life is a series of twists and turns and very human mistakes. I especially liked the stories of his first trip to the Hawaiian Islands, North Shore. I was laughing a lot and couldn't put the book down. A good chronicle of the "Aussie Invasion" of the mid-1970's, and all of the crazy stuff that happened during that time.Pro Surfing nowadays seems very tame in comparison. And to think, Rabbit Bartholomew is now the President of the ASP!

If you've surfed before, you'll know...
If you've ever gone out at 5 in the morning to catch a wave before school. Or gone out during lunch break even if it's flat. You'll love this book. Nuff said.

Keeps the reader wondering who the culprit is until the end
This who-dun-it has all of the essential elements of a good mystery. A fisherman discovers a severed arm in a lake, and the plot thickens from there. The detectives investigating the case are interesting characters, and as they become better acquainted with each other, their relationship blossoms. The author has done a fine job of studying and explaining the science of embalming, which fits nicely into the plot. All in all, a good read and a fine first novel. Let's hope for more from this author.

Intriguing!
The Butcher Bird weaves a tale of intrigue that holds the reader's attention to the last twist of fate. The book tweaks the imagination and stirs the curiosity to solve the strange and bizarre tale that evolves slowly to the end. The book is not for the "faint at heart" as it reveals the shadow side of human nature that prevails even in the quiet calm of a peaceful setting. The Butcher Bird is a good backpacking companion to hunker down with amidst the hum-drum workaday world. NDalebuck@aol.com

California Landlord Law Book: Rights & Responsibilities
Hardcopy book is excellent and a must especially for people with only one or two properties. I would expect that most professional landlords would know most of the information.

Guides you through the process
When we moved to a new home, we decided not to sell our old one but rent it out instead. However, we've heard a lot of nightmare stories about being a landlord, so the idea was pretty scary even though it makes sense for the long-term financially. This book gives you great advice and even examples of doing things the right way and the wrong way. I certainly had a lot of misconceptions about what was legal and what was not, and I think it would even be helpful even if one decided to hire a property management service just to understand liabilities. After reading this book, I feel comfortable that we've done everything in a legally correct way, and that we did a good job of screening our tenants. The forms provided give you everything you need to start renting out a place.

Cave Poetry And Cave Art For Your Favorite Troglotyke
I love Diane Siebert's poetic picture books. Her poetry is always fun to read, her content is always accurate, and she always has the best illustrators working with her. Cave may be her best book yet. Any child hearing or reading this extended poem will learn about limestone caves from the formation of the original layer of limestone to the actions of humans on the caves [both beautiful (neolithic cave paintings) and destructive (the destruction and removal of cave formations)]. The book contains the fun kinds of multisyllabic words that kids like to learn and say - words like stalactite, stalagmite, and troglophiles - and includes a pronunciation guide at the end of the book. The book includes an author's note at the end that provides a little more background for the adult reader. I highly recommend that you get a copy of this wonderful picture book for your favorite young reader.

Amazing content, poetry and illustrations
Another Diane Siebert book, "Sierra," was recommended in a university program on childrens' literacy. In searching for that book I found, "Cave," which is even more engaging. The content of these books is very educational for adults and children, and their poetry and illustrations make the subject matter both simple and mature. This series is marvelous for children of any age. In these books, the authors take the readers to a place where non-fiction meets artistry. I'm reading them to my 10-month old daughter now and expect her to get more and more out of them each year she grows older. If you think you're an expert on caves, make sure you know the difference between trogloxenes, trolophiles, and troglobites. Ooh, that's a tough one.

An invaluable classic work
This text/ atlas of electron micrographs is a treasured resource for both budding and experienced microscopists. In terms of both quality and breadth of selection, this work has never been matched. A sharp publisher would consider reprinting it. As it is, biologists jealously guard their copies from interested users. A valued treasure !

The ultimate guide to cell ultrastructure.
The Cell is a classic in cell biology, and deservedly so. Generations of cell biologists have cut their teeth on this book. Although other structures have been discovered and new techniques have been developed since its publication, the micrographs presented remain some of the most beautiful and informative ever taken. A great guide to learning your way around the cell.

Worth the money for checking out nonorthodox groups
House goes over 19 different quasi-Christian religions and, although I have not read very much yet, initial appearances show that he appears to have done a very nice job. He lists the different viewpoints of these religions and then contrasts them with "Orthodox" Christianity. He uses original sources to support himself so that it's not just his opinion, but rather the opinion of the group's leaders. Certainly some may come in and disagree about certain nuances regarding the way he lays out the orthodox position (i.e. a Catholic or Greek Orthodox layperson may not see eye-to-eye on salvation and justification through faith alone), but House gives verses from the Bible to support himself. He also uses expert resources to check his work and make sure his arguments were not faulty. I will keep this reference near-by, and when I have a question about a particular group's teaching, I will be sure to see what this has to say.

I do have two complaints: First, the book is so big (350 pages, 8.5 x 11 format) and, with the pages getting flipped back and forth, I'm scared the spine may not hold out. I'm wondering why the publisher didn't use a metal ring spine to make it easier to lay the book flat and help it withstand the constant paging back and forth. Also, what about the Boston (discipleship) movement? I would have liked material on this growing group. However, I can't lessen my recommendation of the book despite my complaints.

A Great Ready Reference Book
H. Wayne House has put together a wonderful collection of charts/descriptions/facts regarding the various cults, sects, & religious movements. House gives facts about each group's history, their theology on the main doctrines of the Christian faith (i.e. the Trinity, the diety of Christ, the doctrine of Revelation, the humanity of Christ, Salvation, etc.) and he gives the orthodox response to the false teaching. This book is literally exhaustive in its research and simple in its approach, which makes the book a very powerful tool for the Christian apologists. Some of the various groups that are covered are Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, Church Universal and Triumphant, A Course in Miracles, the New Age movement, Mind Science groups, Christian Identity Movement, Christadelphians, Eckankar, Urantia Foundation, The Way International, Rosicrucianism, Freemasonry, etc. The bibliography alone (from page 339 to 351) is worth the cost of the book.
