Inevitably, and by design, this book appears in the tradition of "self help." It is that, and the combination of experiences, explanation of phenomena, examples, and exercises that the authors use to bring us the help is effective and beautifully done. However, the book is a lot more than that at the same time. For example, I put it alongside the great plays and the great poets as a source of reflection, insight, and inspiration into what I am doing with my life, and alongside meditation and prayer for creating space in my life to consider what is important, be grateful for life, and get ready to take action on what I am not satisfied with.
And there is more: the authors give us access to a group of thinkers who are not accessible to the general public today, because the foundations of their thinking are so recently built that they aren't even taught at most universities. The best examples are the radical new interpretation of language and action of Fernando Flores and the biology of Humberto Maturana. Each has written, but their books are difficult. Budd does a beautiful job of taking us simply and clearly into these new worlds.
A book not to be missed! Thank you, Matthew Budd, and thank you Amazon for making this kind of conversation possible for all of us.

The book is clear and well written. Throughout the entire book you will be asking yourself, "what am I waiting for? I could be cruising NOW!" While I would agree that it is certainly possible to do as they did, it takes more than the desire to save money. It takes the kind of character many of us don't have (including me). The character of *completely* relying on just the basics. For instance, I could not imagine...for me...having a sailboat without a motor. There is certainly something pure and noble about not having one, but I still feel it is a convenience (and safety feature) I would not want to do without.
Above all else is my favorite quote from the Pardeys. When asked how much longer they were going to continue sailing they replied, "As long as it's fun."
That's the sort of inspiration we need about all things in life.

I bought this book when I was about five months pregnant. Needless to say, like most pregnant women- I was moody.
I came across this book and I literally laughed SO hard and SO much that I thought I was going to go into labor. There are stories in here for EVERYONE. I had talked about twelve of my pregnant friends and mommies into buying this book and they all LOVE it. That book went with me into the delivery room and was enjoyed by all. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who has ever given birth or who is pregnant. You will not regret it!!!
Well, I went out and bought it and OMIGOD. She was SO right. This book has entertained MANY of my friends, family, co-workers, and fellow mothers. The stories in here are hysterical. It's amazing at some of the CRAZY things people will say and do when they are in labor. I also enjoyed the stories from celebrities. It makes you realize that when it comes to childbirth, they are no different from you or I.
I would definitely recommend this book to my family and friends. It also makes a GREAT shower gift!

As for the text, Cologrande has crafted a wonderful, free-flowing narrative of life in the Mesozoic. As with "Walking With Dinos" (which this book can't avoid being compared to) there is a large amount of speculation involved about the day-to-day details of dino life. But Cologrande obviously placed a high priority upon grounding his speculations in as much solid science as possible. No wild flights of fancy are found here. In fact, in text this book is substantially superior to WWD.
As a paleoartist myself I find this book to be a constant source of inspiration and amazement. Jack Horner called it "jet fuel for the imagination." I can't think of a better description. BUY IT!
This book has a very good flowing narrative that is both educational and informative. The Mesozoic world was filled with amazing wonders, but from the fossil record we can only glimpse and speculate what it really looked like. Through the illustrator's eyes and put into print we really can what it was like. From dragonflys, pteradactyls, forests, and deserts to T.rex, sea-life, and valleys.
All are portrayed with an artful touch rendering a life-like appearence. Can you imagine a Pteranodon with a wingspan of more than 25 feet to a Elasmosaurus laying eggs on a beach. The coloration of the dinosaurs is highly speculative, but they probably did have colors to identify themselves for mating and for protection from predators. Also fur and feathers were probably used to keep them warm and protect them from the weather. Again, this is speculative, but I stongly think the illustrator has the right idea.
You'll read this informative narrative and get lost in your imagination by the artwork, as this is a worderful book.

Coming from a whitewater paddling background, my first thought on looking at the river descriptions in Huff's book was, "Hm, not very detailed." On further reflection, though, this makes sense. Details of how to run rapids aren't needed in Florida, and the lack of details makes visiting the waterways described much more of a voyage of discovery- as paddling should be.
Huff has logically divided her book into three major sections. The first part contains tips for paddling in Florida, and includes chapters on gear and clothing and how to pack it, staying healthy, staying safe, and camping in Florida with sections on cooking and camp activities, all delightfully written by someone who clearly has had an abundance of paddling experience.
The second section describes in detail all the wildlife you might encounter on any trip on Sunshine State waterways, and your best strategies for safely dealing with those critters (Do NOT feed the wildlife!). Aunt Sally from Ohio will survive her first alligator encounter if you follow Huff's advice. There is even a short chapter on fishing.
Finally, the last section contains descriptions of over 200 trips on 91 waterways across the state. Every description contains all the information you'll need to make that trip: a map, where to put in, where to take out, the length of time and/or mileage involved, skill level needed, and local emergency phone numbers (great idea!). The descriptions are also keyed to the corresponding DeLorme atlas page numbers, and include a brief outline of what you can expect to encounter, all written in a tastefully understated manner.
It's difficult to find any flaws in this book, or figure out how to improve upon it. For every Sunshine State paddler or anyone who wants to become one, Huff's book is a must read.

This book is on the bookshelf in our living room with 100 other books, lots of great novels and coffee table books, but enevitably this is the book that almost EVERYONE grabs. At minimum gets a big smile, usually gets a good laugh.
Highly recommended.
Any Seinfed fan (or student or lover of comedy) MUST own this book. My only regret is that it only gives you scripts for the first and second seasons (which, actually, many consider among the best). It shows you the solid comedic, consistently witty, and highly ironic foundations behind the cast's classic performances.
The good news: this book READS funny. Unless you just don't like reading drama/comedy in script form, you'll howl almost as much (since you are missing actual facial expressions, timing and body language) as you read these. Quite a few of these episodes were written by Seinfeld and collaborator (who how has a critically acclaimed HBO comedy series) Larry David. The many episodes include "The Jacket," "The Pony Remark," "The Deal," "The Chinese Restaurant," (one of my favorites) and "The Revenge."
According to published accounts, Seinfeld and David were absolutely adamant that there would be "no hugging" on THEIR show and that they would do the show their way or not do the show at all. They stuck to their guns. This book contains highly original sitcom comedy which holds up exceedingly well in script form. Keep the importance of solid writing in mind as you see former cast members from his show (or even Jerry himself or former cast members of other big hits) try to clone their earlier success: without a solid comedic foundation -- which is funny on paper -- all the talent in the world won't create a hit sitcom.
