A great find!!!
I read the Lower Lights in one sitting but, I thought of it for
several days after. The characters seem real and to my surprise Lake Superior is like a character herself. The Lower Lights is quite the ride and I will take the ride again as I plan to re-read this book soon.

Upcoming Master
This is one of the best books I've read. Mr. Jacobson's approach is both immediate to the story, and insightful as well. The reader is not aware of "reading" the book but is taken right into the story and the charachters. I did't want the book to end. Mr. Jacobson is a true talent, and I look forward to his next work.

Marvelous book!
Seldom have I found such an inspired and riveting first effort coming from a rookie author. But this book delivers. The characters are well defined and human, as though the author has lived through this experience and is merely recounting his childhood memories.

Worth the read!
A charming and timeless piece that accounts the unparalleled experience that is being a child. In the book you meet 8 year old Donna as she meets the unforgettable Lucky Larry, a young boy with MD who doesn't let that or anything else stop him or Donna and their delightfull friends from getting into all sorts of mischief and having fantastic adventures.
Donna Worden Abitz's wonderful craft at storytelling coupled with the beautiful illustrations of David Michael O'Barr, make this book a joy to behold. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Great story--great illustrations!
This is a beautiful story about growing up in a time where the biggest crime was being caught throwing apples at cars, where one boy with disabilities found acceptance, simply by being himself. It's a great story for helping readers to see what life was like during this period in history. The illustrations help to capture the attention of the reader and the mood of the time. I look forward to reading more by this author.

Lucky Larry
I need more copies of Lucky Larry. Everyone who reads this book has loved it!

Puts the film in an entirely different light
If you've seen the film enoughto be fiarly familiar with it's structure and narrative, this script will be a revelation. As stated in the title, this is a "shooting script",the original version submitted to the producers at the onset of the film's production, before the actors and director started fiddling with it.There are many, many scenes and passages here that greatly clarify the direction of the story and provide crucial motivations and psychological subtexts that you may miss in the completed film. However, scriptwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaczewski provide insight into this in the fantastic forward to the script,in the process giving a fascinating glimse into all the labirynthine exigencies involved in getting an original spark of insiration into the multiplex. They explain the step-by-step process of telling Kaufman's story-what to put in,what to leave out,how to handle certain aspects of his life, shaping the messy, complicated, and open-ended events of his career into something resembling a coherent,three-act drama.Ultimately, they decided-wisely-to treat the film as Andy would have,to let his art and performances define the film, just as they defined his life, and to use a constantly shifting base of perspective to keep the audience on thier toes,a brilliantly executed exercise in what-is-real and what-isn't.If you loved the film, this script provides an essential companion that will give you a new appreciation for it,but even if you're not particularly fond of it,or even Andy Kaufman hiomself, this is still a fascinating look at the creative process, and how it holds up throughout the production of a film.Highly recommended.

This IS a shooting script!
WOW! This is a GREAT example of a shooting script, something that was very different before the movie, and was molded into a more "managable" form through shooting and editing.

But is managable a better thing? Scott and Larry are great screenwriters, and crafted a great screenplay here. However, Milos Forman (the director) took the movie and made it into something not as personal as it could have been. Oh well.

But this is why shooting scripts that are actually the original script before any shooting ever took place are important (you hearing this American Beauty?). To show us how a screenplay can change when it goes from paper to celluloid.

Read this screenplay to see what the movie could have been like :)

Yes! It's that good!
"Man on the Moon" has to be on my top three best screenplay list for 1999-2000. It's a great screenplay with great words and conversations. I love it and I'm sure you will too.

FOR HOPELESS ROMANTICS, INDEED
I have just finished a remarkable novel, Martyr's Cry, and I was exhilarated by the flow, the author-controlled pace and the overall dramatic impact of the work. I was also disappointed. I was thoroughly disappointed that it came to an end. Oh, make no doubt about it, it ended precisely where it should have ended. Any more would have been anti-climactic. It wasn't a failing of the book. But, as Mr. Bohall said on the back cover, this is "a mystery for hopeless romantics." And I must say of myself ~as a hopeless romantic ~ I wanted to linger there longer, just a while longer. I've read a lot of novels over a whole lot of years, and I can say I've had that feeling only a handful of times...

A consummate artist, Mr. Bohall lured me into the novel with the promise on the cover: "If you don't deal with the ghosts of your past, the ghosts of your past will deal with you..." So, okay, I'm thinking, Mr. Bohall is speaking figuratively. There won't be any real live ghosts... will there? Then, just inside the book's "door," I find myself being whisked through a very dramatic prologue, then tossed fully into the first chapter where there's already been a hint of a murder, a protagonist you can't help but love, and questions... the questions that keep popping up that you know are going to demand answers.

Not the least of the questions is: how will Bishop John Wesley Hunter deal with the ghost of his past? And, concerning the ghost of his past, will she ~~ but, then, how can I complete that question without robbing you of your enjoyment. And enjoyment you will have! With the guidance of a most talented story teller, you will be taken along with Bishop Hunter through all the many twists and turns of this tightly conceived plot. You will be taken where you'd swear there can be no resolution, but then our hero pulls through like the champion that he his, again and again and again ~ albeit not without bruises, both to his body... and his psyche.

So... strap yourself in and enjoy the ride. I promise you that, like me, you will feel thoroughly satisfied at its conclusion, though you'll be left wanting more. But, that's what sequels are for! (Are you listening, Mr. Bohall?)

Great Imagery
Larry D. Bohall is indeed a talented writer. His narration is lively, vibrant, poetic and his descriptions were full of great imagery. I truly enjoyed it! I highly recommend it. I hope he continues with another Mystery. It sure leaves the reader hungry for more...

Midwest Book Review - vibrant, tender, humorous, haunting
Advance reviews of Martyr's Cry describe it as "a mystery for hopeless romantics". It was indeed that, and much more. Larry Bohall's carefully controlled style is vibrant, tender, with a touch of humor. This book is mysterious, haunting, humorous, and ultimately touching.

John Wesley Hunter is a Bishop in the United Methodist Church. Despite that status, he's a very human hero. Women find his height and looks appealing, but he sees himself in quite a different light. He's insecure about his bony legs, and thinks perhaps he's not as manly as he should be, in any way. Despite his many accomplishments, Bishop Hunter has good reason to feel less than successful where women are concerned. He's nursed a broken heart for almost 20 years because the beautiful and enchanting Heather, the light of his life, chose another man in place of him.

When Hunter's dog Samson awakens him in the middle of the night. he's greeted by a faint, familiar scent at first, and then the sight of Heather dancing in his office. Heather, dancing in the middle of the night, beautiful as ever, has come to pay an unexpected visit. That's where the haunting comes in. Heather comes to call from beyond the grave, seeking help from the only one she can trust. She's been murdered, leaving behind a troubled ex-husband and institutionalized daughter.

Hunter and the ethereal Heather set out to right wrongs and reveal an intricate scheme involving church hierarchy and elected officials. The Bishop and his spirit-sweetheart pick up where they left off, meshing as a team Mr. Bohall makes this premise work effectively, with skill. I found myself straining to assist in solving the mystery before the bad guys killed another victim. And I hoped the ghostly Heather could ease the Bishop's pain and heal his broken heart.

Hunter's investigation produces threats, intimidation, beatings, and an attempt on his life in close succession. The quiet, gentle Bishop with a wry sense of humor turns volatile, gains strength as he seeks out Heather's killer.
Before the last page, rest assured that all loose ends will be tied up and Hunter's heart will be nicely mended.

Yes, this was a romantic mystery. Mystery addicts and romance fans alike should love it. But as I said in the beginning, Martyr's Cry is far more than that. I strongly suggest you read the book to find out what I mean.

A Mentor's Companion
Published in Paperback by Perrone-Ambrose Associates, Ltd. (1998)
Author: Larry Ambrose
Amazon base price: $15.95

Enlightening, Useful Guide to and Overview of Mentoring
In the introduction Larry Ambrose said that he wrote this book as a reference book and did not intend it to be read from cover to cover. In reading the entire book, though, I found it to be very enlightening. I'm sure that I will refer to it as a reference book many times.

A Mentor's Companion is written in a conversational manner -- with Chapters 2-6 beginning with an on-going mentoring scenario that unfolds throughout the chapters. After each scenario, a short chapter follows that delves deeper into the mentoring attributes touched on in the story. Larry Ambrose then shows notepads for the mentor's use and practical checklists that are incredibly helpful for anyone preparing to serve as a mentor. These notepads and checklists, I am sure, are the reference materials to which Mr. Ambrose refers in the Introduction. Each chapter's title page also has an insightful quote that sets the mood for the chapter.

Three of the main points of this book are the following:

1. The goal of true mentoring is the development of the mentee -- not necessarily the solution of specific problems. Larry Ambrose gives detailed examples of how to accomplish this task throughout the book.

2. True mentoring is a partnership -- in which both parties learn, grow, and discover more about themselves and their potential.

3. Honest feedback is extremely important. A mnemonic device shared in this book with regard to feedback is S.E.A.T. -- feedback should be Specific, Explicit, Achievable, and Timely. Larry Ambrose gives general guidelines to assist the mentor in framing feedback properly to benefit the mentee's (and the mentor's) development.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is looking at the mentoring process -- especially if looking into becoming a first-time mentor.

User Friendly Learning
The 'Companion' is a valuable , user friendly tool. I was sold on the book after the introduction, foreword and Chapters 1 and 2, and immediately ordered a copy for all the senior managers in our business unit.

The Pioneers of Mentoring
Individuals have the opportunity to learn from the pioneers, Perrone-Ambrose Associates, through 'A Mentor's Companion'. This book is a must for all those concerned with creating a dignified and inclusive work environment.

El Cordobes Comes Alive in this "Ole" Bio!
Perhaps one of the best biographies I have ever read, this book tells the story of the fabled Spanish bullfighter Manuel Benitez "El Cordobes"!

Born in strict poverty, this youngser defied all the odds in becoming perhaps the most famous modern day "toreador"! His phenominal rise to fame is truly something out of a novel! El Cordobes, desperate, illiterate, starving had one dream, to become a bullfighter. And the odds were stacked heavily against him. This noble profession certainly had no room for such a peasant! But the heavens were looking out for him and rise he did. With the help of an influential patron, El Cordobes succeeded, and with a fervor almost unparalleled. This is no "dull biography" but a gripping one, complete with all the ingredients of a first-rate novel! (Billyjhobbs@tyler.net)

A Book Destined to be a Film
I have owned this book (in paperback form) for 30 years. Never have I read a book so entertaining that I could sit there and not put it down. Because of this book I developed an interest in matadors and tauromachy that is with me to this day. My only question is....Why isn't this book a movie? It has all the elements for a major motion picture. It just needs the right director and script. With all the attention focused on people who speak Spanish...now is the time to "strike while the iron is hot"..so to speak. This book is well-written and well-researched. I always felt I was right there beside El Cordobes ...the authors made him come to life on every page. Someday I want to go to Spain to visit all the cities, towns and villages named in this book. Anyone interested in the life of a courageous young boy who overcame insurmountable odds....has to read this book. It's fabulous! My personal favorite for 30 years!

THE LOVE OF POWER AND THE POWER OF LOVE
This book demonstrates how all men are not equal. I was enthralled, horrified and moved by the story of El Cordobes, the famous bullfighter and his rise to the top of his profession. His strength and courage in the bullring, his quest for literacy and latterly for the right to medical aid regardless of ability to pay kept me rivited until the end. The style of writing is fluid, and the tight focus on the chronology make the story fascinating. Even if bullfighting is not your average sports scene, this is a must read - the excitment, custom and fragrance of the corrida emanate from every page.

Nature and Art United
The work of landscape photographer Larry N. Olson easily rivals the best of his better-known peers like Art Wolfe and David Muench. Terms like "overpowering" and "awe-inspiring" accurately describe the scenes in OREGON RIVERS--but so do the words "elegant" and "exquisite." Olson neither "takes" nor "makes" photographs: his work gives us neither merely pretty pictures nor ego-obtrusive "studies." Instead, the union we see and feel is greater than either half. In Olson's photographs we experience true art which somehow, magically, lets nature luminesce through.

Oregon's Finest Landscape Photographer Makes His Mark.
Larry N. Olson is most likely the best landscape photographer to come out of the Pacific Northwest EVER. His work speaks for itself. A truely fantastic book.

Incredible photographs of Oregon's wild and scenic rivers.
A beautifully reproduced book with very unique compositions

Best Perennial Book
Although I have many books on gardening and perennials, this one is my absolute favorite. It's a wonderful resource for selecting, planting, and propagating hundreds of different perennials. Each plant is fully described on two pages with gorgeous photography. I especially like the "Plant Profile" section which offers a thumbnail description of color, size, hardiness, and several other factors. This enables the reader to instantly determine whether a particular plant will work in a given space. I also like the author's notes on "Problems and Solutions" for each plant. His blunt, honest, and humorous comments have saved me from planting beautiful, but migraine-inducing, flowers. A great reference and fun to read.

Excellent book on perennial gardening
Canadian garden writer and lecturer Hodgson is true to his book's title, covering quite a lot of ground in a straightforward, no-nonsense manner. Preliminary chapters cover the basics such as getting started, creating a design, and keeping plants healthy. The highlight, however, is the 14 chapters that profile perennials that can be used in unique situations (e.g., dry, wet, sunny, shade, easy-care). Each plant profile includes a photograph, a sidebar listing plant characteristics, and informative paragraphs detailing good companion plants, problems and solutions, and the top performers and recommended varieties for each plant. Other "extras" include a beautiful section of seven garden designs, a glossary of the meanings of botanical names, plant sources, and the American Horticultural Society Heat Zone Map.

One of the best books on perennials
This book is well organized, has very helpful tips, and an interesting selection of plants, not just the old stand-bys. A worthwhile buy, even if you already have many other books on the subject.

This book makes Illinois look great.
I love this book. The pictures are awesome, many of which were taken in the early 80's. Farms dominate the pictures. If you like pictures of barns, prairies, or trees you'll want to buy this book. It's just too bad these pictures aren't large and ion frames.

Austere Zen-like beauty
This is the book that I show to people when I try vainly to explain in words why a prairie view or a prairie skyscape is more inspiring to me than a mountain range. Although some of the photos are a little too posed and sentimental, the finest of them convey the power and austere beauty of this-often dismissed part of the country. Akin in their severe beauty to Zen or to Shaker design, the finest of these photographs will catch at your heart and your mind.

Prairiescapes is 100+ pages of visual poetry
This collection of timeless photographs eloquently expresses the strength and sustenance we midwesterners draw from our environment. "Praireiscapes" reveals what many of us would never have taken notice of or been able to explain with words on our own--that the midwestern landscapes are glorious, and beautiful in a profound, enduring way. Kanfer has another book, "On Second Glance" which picks up where "Praireiscapes" ends, and there is an annual calendar of photographs widely available.I recommend them highly for anyone who appreciates fine art photography.

Jetmore Hits it on the Head.
I couldn't put this one down. I've been looking for something that addresses the things I've been trying to deal with on the job, and this book nailed it!

It doesn't give you all the answers, just the right encouragement to keep looking.

I would say this one's a must for anyone in law enforcement or any stressful field.

One of the best
I've read several books on the subject of police ethics. Jetmore's is by far the best. A wonderful combination of research and actual stories from the streets, this books captured my interst from te very beginning. Very insightful.

How do you determine the "right" thing to do?
Dr. Jetmore, a law enforcement veteran of 21 years, challenges students and veterans alike to awaken their souls and become "warriors." Using "war stories" and the "ancient philosophy and code of honor used by King Arthur's Knights of the Round Table," Dr. Jetmore provides a concise yet encompassing work of challenges.

This work recounts stories of actions that police officers take in the daily conduct of their duties, only to be questioned later by the public. Such exposure to values conflicts subject officers to both psychological and physical stress.

Dr. Jetmore challenges all who read this work to "take control of their destiny," and seek professional and private development. He even speaks the previously "unspeakable" inner sould reactions to years of affiliation with traumatic events.

I suspect many in law enforcement will disagree with Dr. Jetmore. All the reason those that are tasked with protecting us need to read and review his work.
