The Best Dream Book Ever
I guess you could say I am a celebraholic, meaning I read everything I can about my fave celebs. I thought I had read everything until Private Dreams of Public People. So intense... this beautiful coffee-table book reveals the private, sleep dreams of the most amazing celebrities including Michael Douglas and Sophia Loren. From writers to supermodels, from musicians to senators, this book is awesome. The dream interpretations are bite sized but extremely well written, breezy but to the point. I never realized how clever we are when we dream. The photographs are beautifully done. There are even some celebs photographed in their bedrooms. Diane Von Furstenberg appears to be naked under Porthault sheets! There is a wonderful photo of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' bedroom when she was first lady. In historic context, her dream was amazingly prophetic!I try to read one dream every night but I warn you, it is hard to put down once you start. ---a reviewer from downtown Manhattan

Fascinating peek at celebrity psyche
This is a gorgeous book! The photos are beautiful and artistic. The dreams are maps into the mind. And the analyses are insightful and interesting. This is a book you can have on your coffee table or your nightstand. It's like everything you always wanted to know about your favorite stars but they wanted to keep private. They're sharing such interesting secrets about themselves. The main one is, we're all the same when we're under the sheets -- dreaming, that is. It's just that when we wake up, they're famous and we're not.

The dreamiest of all coffee table books
Guests that sit in my livingroom repeatedly pick up Private Dreams of Public People, and once opened, cannot put the book down. An absolute page turner, there is always just one more celebrity's dream that you want to read. Thoroughly engrossing in a gossipy, voyeuristic way, Lawrence's interpretations are gloriously intuitive, and revealing...they squeeze the person out of the celebrity. A wonderful addition---reading this book helps us understand our own dreams.

Practical knowledge for the serious sailor
Lin and Larry's reprint/update is well worth the investment. Yes, the chapters here, like many of their books, started off life as magazine articles and, yes, they were published many years ago, but that is completely beside the point. Their advice is timeless because it deals with real knowledge and experience about techniques and material that will never go out of practical use. Varnish, sailcloth, kerosene lamps, dinghies, three strand rope, planes and chisels, none of these or the hundreds of other topics will ever disappear from sailing, unlike a long dissertation on LORAN or RDF or epoxy, or other topics rapidly becoming obsolete. A hundred years from now there will still be sailors on engineless boats with kerosene lamps and sextants, because simple things work. Period. Always have, always will. If this truth appeals to you, then these are your books.

The essential how-to cruise and survive
As usual, Lin and Larry Pardey have captured in their non-preachy, no-nonsense way the essence of cruising and surviving on the high seas...as well as when you drop the hook in a foreign port. This book is fairly old ('82) but they've done a good job of updating and adding info that applies to cruising in the 90s. I'm a fan because I've owned the big boats and now I've down-sized to the more manageable 30-footer range. So I know whereof they speak. Your chances of unhooking from the land are MUCH greater if you are not plowing every cent you make into a 40-45 foot boat. Life becomes sweeter when you manage on your own to make the repairs and adapt some fix-it scheme to your boat so it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I'm working my way through their books and I truly see them as the embodiment of the modern Hiscock.

Like the sea, this book is never out of date
I read the Pardey's Cost Conscious Cruiser first, then I met them at a seminar, listened to their absolute logic - they never said anyone else was wrong, but they did make it clear that people who write about fixing their boat too often, may have complicated their life beyond what they could handle. Self Sufficent sailor has more good advise, logical ideas and fun reading, not sure if it is better than Cost Conscious Cruiser, more like in addition to. The Pardeys made it clear at their seminar that they kept learning as they cruised. It is no wonder they need to write a new book every three or four years. Glad they take the time to do it.

A must buy!
This is great book for learning statistics. The best I've seen so far. Statistics is a subject I hate, but this book has given me hope. I know use it as a supplement for other textbooks. It was a book that was written with the student in mind. I am in a class with an awful stats book now, Statistical Methods for Psychology. But, the Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences text will be a permanent fixture on my shelf and I recommend it often. I will continue to look for textbooks written by these guys. Thanks, you made one of my semesters much better.

statistics for the math phobics
OK, here it is: I am a math phobic, have been all my life, as long as I can remember myself! So, when I started studying psychology as a second degree, I was kind of anxious about taking all kinds of statistics courses: it seems that statistics are a major part of any psychology degree, & so it was important for me to learn them well, from the beginning. Well, with this book (which I shopped around for, looking for the best introductory book on the subject) my math-phobia has not disappeared, but is slowly & surely getting smaller & smaller. This is a textbook that guides you, step by step, so you can understand all the basic concepts of statistics, without feeling you're making an effort. Lots of problem-solving & learning checks help, lots of revision at the end of each chapter...the book is organized in an excellent & thoughtful way, perfect for a student who will take the time sto study (it covers almost everything) but who wants to do it in an organized way.

Kudos to these guys!!!
I used an older copy of this book as an undergrad and was asked by a fellow doctoral student what I might recommend for use as a good stats book for the "stat phobic" ... Hands down, I say that THIS is the book to use. I've used thinner stats books that pretend to be cute. But if "cute" is not what you need, and you need to learn the stuff as well as reference the stuff. This is the book for you.

I suppose I ought to update my copy ;-) mine is dog eared!

Need stats? Buy this book to learn. Good stuff!

Tom Horn: Blood on the Moon: Dark History of the Murderous Cattle Detective
Published in Hardcover by High Plains Pr (1902)
Authors: Chip Carlson and Larry D. Ball
Amazon base price: $35.00
Average review score:

Tom Horn Blood on the Moon
An exceptional documentary dealing with one of Wyoming's most notorious citizens, one that reads like a novel. Although much has been written about Tom Horn, Chip Carlson has done an excellent job of presenting new facts and information furthing adding to the controversey over Horn's guilt in the murder of young Willie Nickell.

Portrait of a rogue
Chip Carlson has established himself as the most prolific and knowledgeable Tom Horn buff since Dean Krakel, and his work is extraordinarily readable. To understand a true American (choose your own term) outlaw, rogue, bounty hunter, lawman, Westerner ... whatever ... pick up Carlson's work, which is full of the grittiness that haunts the legend of Horn.

Tom Horn: Blood on the moon :Dark history of the murderou Ca
The best word I can think of to describe this book is FANTASTIC.Chip Carlson has written another masterpiece on the subject.
To me just about every chapter leaves you craving more information, and thats what a good book should do.His indepth research is amazing on how he has put it into a format for persons interested in this period of western history.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants more insight into the times trials and tribulations of 1890's Wyoming.

When the Woman You Love Has Breast Cancer

Larry gives us hope that men do understand
Larry Eiler has given all of us a special insight into a man's emotions when his wife is going through this hideous disease and all the steps that go with it. I was particularly moved by his honesty. I wish there were more Larrys.

Gaining control of "head" issues that impact you
I am one of some 185,000 men who annually become involved -- or ignore involvement -- when their wife or lover is diagnosed with breast cancer. This personal account of my experience with my wife, Sandy, provides counsel and guidance for men and women who want to gain the one thing they can control in this situation -- their own heads and thinking. It recounts the issues a man faces such as FUD (fear, undertainty and doubt), treatment options, communications, quality of life, sexuality, dealing with children, getting scared. For the 185,000 men who will encounter breast cancer in their wives or lovers this year -- and for the two more or more out there who have partners that were diagnosed earlier, it's a worthwhile 90-100 minutes to buzz through this book that's charged with emotion.

Focuses on control of the emotiuonal issues men encounterr.
When you learn that your wife has breast cancer, you feel isloated, alone, frightened and confused. You are uncertain what to say, what to express, what to tell your friends and children. This book focuses on all of those feelings -- the emotional issues men encounter and how to get control of them.

Ortho's Home Improvement Encyclopedia
This is a fine starter book for the first time home owner. In the first few pages, I had the answers to the three major problems I had been dealing with! Nice and straightforward catch-all book on working over existing stuff or putting in new.

If it's not in this book, don't attempt it.
I picked up this book in Home Depot back in 1997. At a glance I found out how to take out a load bearing wall, something I needed to do. I bought the book, and with it I had the confidence to take on a major remodel of my house. The book has everything, from framing an addition to fixing a leaky faucet. I consult it often. Right now (03/2002) I'm using it to build a shed. The language is clear and concise and the book doesn't waste words. I recommend it highly.

Tbe Best Basic Home Improvement Book
I, recently, purchased this boook (my brother said he had one, and it was great). I flipped through most of the book -- it isn't the kind of book you sit down and read straight through. I've done a fair amount of handyman stuff around the house (I just replaced the motor in my dryer - which wasn't too difficult once I had the right parts). Well, as I flipped through the book, I would stop and read sections which interested me. There are well-written sections on, basically, everything about a house and what is in it. After spending about an hour scanning the book, I said to my wife: "You could build a house with the information that is in here!" It is one of those "I'm glad I bought this book" books. A great book to have if you're looking for stuff to do around the house; it is a real "Home Improvement Encyclopedia."

Splash Hit! Pac Bell Park and the San Francisco Giants

Introducing The Most Beautiful Ballpark In Creation
Every fan of the the Giants should get this book and wallow in the beauty of Pacific Bell Park, if you can't get there yourself. The park really is probably the most beautiful ballpark in baseball, a tiny little gem that nevertheless plays like a huge pitcher's stadium thanks to the bizarre asymmetry of its outfield (and a San Francisco wind that the park's engineering turned into an ally, instead of the vicious Hawk it was at Candlestick Park.)

But it's also a great collection of essays from baseball writers including George Will and Peter Gammons, and local writers sharing memories of the team and the long years of waiting in the cold and fog for a world championship that still hasn't come. Those essays are some of the best parts of the book, moving and nostalgic in the best sense.

The body text, that tracks the long road from New York through Candlestick to the drama of building a new ballpark without the safety net of public money, then chronicles the great 2000 season, is little more than acceptable, but in a coffee table book what you want is gorgeous photographs and insightful vignettes, and "Splash Hit" has that in aces.

Awesome
Great pictures of what has to be one of the nicest sports facilities in the world. I've been to one game here - and as a resident of Seattle, I honestly think that Safeco is a better place to watch a game. However, no stadium can match the asthetic views and its situation in one of the most beautiful cities in the world makes Pac Bell #1.

A Great Book For A Great Ball Park
Pac Bell Park is one of the newest and one of the best ball parks in America. This book is a great tribute to that new park and the Giants' first year playing in it. The book goes into the history and politics behind the park and has a lot of good pictures of the 2000 Giants players in action. Peter Magowan and local and national writers also added illuminating essays to the text. There are a lot of spectacular pictures of the park from all different angles and some interesting construction shots.

A little disappointing was that the book did not have much on the Polo Grounds, Seals Stadium, and Candlestick Park. Even though the Giants no longer play at the old parks, their history is indelibly intertwined with the newer ball park and they deserved more space.

This belongs on any Giants fan's coffee table, especially if they have visited the park.

Thin Ice: A Season in Hell With the New York Rangers
Published in Hardcover by William Morrow & Company (1982)
Author: Larry Sloman
Amazon base price: $12.50
Used price: $14.95
Average review score:

Thin Ice is a must read !
It's absolutely asinine that this book was not among "The Top 100 Sports Books Of All Time" compiled by the staff of Sports Illustrated Magazine. It is a must read, you do not need to be a hockey or sports fan to enjoy this read, it is the "Ball Four" of hockey books. Don't miss it, if you can find it !

"Ratso" and the Manhatten Rangers !
Although I'm not a NY Ranger's fan by any stretch of the imagination, this book is a long forgotten classic and a must read for every hockey fan. "Ratso", (Larry Sloman) did a great job in profiling the NY Ranger players on and off the ice and he is able to insinuate, instances of sexcapades and drug use among the players and still protect their privacy, he takes us behind the scenes of the Manhatten party life with celebrities, models and hockey players. I was able to find this book in an old inner city library sometime in the late 70's, early 80's. The chance of you finding it now are slim and nil, but if you do get a hold of it, I'm sure you'll be glad you did.

Hmm ... Interesting
As JHRay has already mentioned ... it's funny how rbettendorf could review this book and find such information as: personal bios of Mark Messier, Brian Leetch, and Mike Richter as well as the rangers winning the Stanley Cup in 1994.

This book was published in 1981. Mess was in Edmonton and Richter and Leetch were still in high school my friend.
