Glad I got the companion video to go with it -
As usual Lin and Larry are trying to share the things they learned so people with less experience can feel more confident at sea. Now they have demonstrated what their book describes in video format (I actually got the DVD so I could have it on board to use on my laptop) cleared up any questions I had left and was lots of fun besides. I got it from their website, wonder if they will let...carry it. Should be a package deal. Got my wife dreaming and feeling less worried about storms.

Essential information for those travelling offshore
A reef will cause waves to break before a shore. The creation of a slick of disturbed water, by use of a parachute type anchor, held just below the surface, two wavelengths directly upwind of you, can do the same thing and create a pocket of relatively undisturbed water, in which a boat can ride out a violent storm safely.

This being the case, the crew have only two concerns.

1) Keeping the boat positioned so that the sea takes one side of the bow more than another prevents oscillations and keeps the ride smooth. Keep the bow strait to the seas is actually rougher and not desirable. This offset can be made with a bridle. And,

2) Preventing chafe, which will part your rode and lose your para-anchor, and put you at the mercy of the full fury of a storm.

The Pardey's successfully used these techniques to heave-to in storms and avoid loosing ground when the winds became unfavorable, and then continued on when conditions moderated. They did this with confidence.

My only concern, is the Pardey's experience was strictly small boat. Small boats have an advantage in a way, in that they can be easier to handle.

The question remains. How well will these techniques work with larger boats.

I would like to read about the results of people using this technique in a larger boat in more severe conditions. For example: a 42-48 foot catamaran and/or a 45-50' monohull in 100+ mph winds with large breaking seas.

Alchemy For Rough Seas.
This book is essentially about one thing: how to create the "Von Karmon Vortex Street". What the authors have done is taken a scientific approach to storm-survival and have gathered evidence both ancient and modern to support their thesis.

It turns out that a sailboat's anatomy - high wind exposure even running bare poles and a deep keel - can be used to defeat the underwater component of a breaking sea, rendering it harmless foam. The key, of course, is knowing how to stabilize the yacht in relationship to wind and water.

Using various sail configurations and/or anchor chutes and by simple tests like dropping bits of paper into the water, the boat may be kept within the confines of its own self-created safe haven.

This is not a "best-kept secret", but rather something that has been discovered and rediscovered in a fairly random and haphazard manner over time. Most sailors can't confidently say why certain storm strategies worked in some cases and others didn't. The authors have not taken lightly the presentation of this material to the boating public. We are all indebted to their work and insight.

Delivers more than the title suggests
The world of computer graphics books is filled with fat, pricy tomes that are frankly little better than rehashes of the manual. "Advanced Renderman" is a completely different sort of book.

While Renderman is the ostensible subject, the authors actually cover the entire graphics workflow-- and explain the "why" of it all. Their section on anti-aliasing, for example, is concise, complete, and makes clear the implications of all those little doo-hickeys in 3DS -- you remember the AR explanation better, because its based around how rendering works, rather than how a particular application works (which may change in the next rev, anyway)

Smart guys, smart book-- highly recommended.

Great all-around RenderMan reference
This is a great book, written in clear and understandable English. It proivded me (a novice) great information about the RenderMan interface. Not only did it provide a reference to the various API calls, but it also includes an introduction to the basic maths behind it, as well as chapters that discuss CG in general. A thoroughly well written, useful and informative book. It is indespensible for any RenderMan user and in fact, for any CG artist.

Art of Photosurrealism
This book is written by six renowned professionals in digital lighting field. Even you are not a shader programmer, chaper 1 and 13 show the aesthic architecture of lighting composition and tell us the beauty of 'Photosurrealism'. The depth of each paper is just amazing and you can find more beautiful tecnical information from other papers written by the same authors.

What to Do When You're Not Fishing
If you can't get to the stream, river, lake or ocean to angle for the fish of your choice, this book is a great way to pass the time. There isn't an angler alive who wouldn't enjoy spending a few hours (or days) in the camps, cabins and dens shown in this book. If you love to collect fishing related items, the book will be a true delight. Buy it. Read it cover to cover. Then put it in handy place to pull out when time and circumstance don't permit a trip to your favorite waters with rod and reel.

Praise from The Washington Post
In its syndicated "Gift Ideas" column for Dec. 11, 2000, Washington Post reviewer Annie Groer wrote: "For those whose motto is 'I'd rather be fishing,' THE ANGLER'S LIFE: COLLECTING AND TRADITIONS should not be the one that got away. Author Laurence Sheehan and photographer William Stites have created a paean to the art and artifacts of piscatorial endeavor....This book could make you grab your rod and waders and head for the nearest stream."

The Angler's Life: Collecting and Traditions
My husband and I received a copy of "The Angler's Life" as a present, and we just love it. If there is a fisherman in your life, this is a must-have gift. When this talented team produced "Living With Dogs", another title I love, I spent hours scouring flea markets for dog art, dog bronzes and dog plaques---I even got a dog! Now with "The Angler's Life", I find myself scouring flea markets for fishing signs, fishing creel baskets, fishing postcards and lures. The decorating ideas for displaying fishing paraphernalia in the book are endless, and aesthetically pleasing. My husband, who fly fishes in the Gulf of Mexico, keeps it on top of his book stack for easy access.

cutie pie
This book I really enjoyed, it really sparked my interest. I hope that many people read this book and enjoy it, like I did.

Such fun!
I read to children weekly at Border's Bookstore and they love this book! It is so much fun to read and the children really get involved in the dilemma the boy has: trying to repair the bear's toothache. The portrayal of Dad is hilarious and all too familiar to parents. It is a delightful book your child will not soon forget!

A great companion in the dental clinic
We accompanied Juancho, our two and a half year old kid, to his dentist last week and we chanced upon this great children's book by David M. McPhail aptly titled, "The Bear's Toothache" on the dentist's book shelf.

The book, richly illustrated by the author, is about a boy who cannot not go to sleep. He finds a bear with a toothache outside his window and lets him in. What follows is a hilarious sequence as the boy proceeds to help the bear remove the aching tooth. They raid the refrigerator and knock over a lamp that sends the father to the room to investigate. Still sleepy, Dad doesn't see the bear hiding under the bed. Finally, the bear jumps off the window ledge with a rope tied around the tooth. The scheme is a success and the bear leaves the tooth to the boy for him to keep under his pillow. What a riot.

After reading the book, we laughed aloud with Juancho who by that time was all set for his own adventure with the dentist.

The Original Generation's Chronicle
The last revised edition of the Star Trek Compendium, from 1993, is a wonderful resource book about the first series. The adventures of Captain Kirk, (William Shatner), Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Dr. "Bones" McCoy (DeForest Kelly) and the rest of the original crew will always hold a special place for me. After all, none of the other spin-offs, would have been possible, without this show paving the way.

Written by Allan Asherman, the book is a fun trip through the early years of the saga, created by former arline pilot Gene Roddenberry. The book takes readers from the original pitch to NBC-TV, through both pilots (The Cage and Where No Man Has Gone Before), all of the 78 other episodes from 1966-1969, syndication and the growing fandom of the 70s, the short-lived animated series ('73-'74), the aborted Phase II television series, and all six motion pictures featuring just the "Classic Cast" The book has episode/film synopses, behind the scenes stories, and fun trivia. The guide has over 125 black and white photographs and a total of 182 pages (including index)

The compendium is highly recomended to any generation of Trek fan

Another must for all trekkies
This book covers all of the episodes of the Original Series and all of the movies up to Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. A great reference book for even those who only just care for the Original Series but prefer the later serieses (like me!).

What a Fabulous Resource!
This book does exactly what it says.... There is great preliminary information and rare pictures of the beginnings of the series. Then, you get writer, director, principle characters, and descriptions of each episode. You also get information on syndication, conventions, the second series, and the first five movies.

Little Book for the Money
This is a good book for the money. It has good transliteration, and it gives a short definition of the word. You will not find every word in the Bible in this book because of its size, but the book is well worth the money. It is a little tricky trying using the index if you are not familiar with the Hebrew alphabet.

A superb vocab list
This book is a great list for those students who wish to build their vocabulary in order to gain a greater understanding to the bible. This book is not a dictionary and don't try to use it as such. The words are broken into sections according to the frequency in which they occur in the bible. The more frequent a word occurs the closer to the front they will appear. The words are not in alphabetic order. However, if you wish to improve your vocabulary quickly by learning the most useful words than this book is for you.

Handy!
This is a good little book, if used the right way. I put it to use the best way I could -- which is to say that I typed in the text into a neat little program called Vocab and used it to drill myself to death. Behold me, well nigh translated to death!

Interesting Police vs Assassin tale
Well written tale with strong plot line.

Greatest Ever
I started reading Hugh Holton's books this year. Just found it on the library shelf. I wanted to read them all. I have read all of his books and find "Time of the Assassins" to be the best one yet. I have ordered it, also his new book "The Thin Black Line" and "Red Lighting" which I could not get from the library. I am sorry that we will not be able to read more books by him. A sad lost to the readers and writers world. Gripping suspense and a surprise ending. What a writer he was. He writes about things we know, but are afraid to say. So today.

The past meets the future
Another great one from Hugh Holton. The story begins when a young Larry Cole overhears a murder plot and the action just keeps going and going and going. Mr. Holton knows how to keep you at the edge of your seat. All I can say hang on and enjoy the ride as this novel has it all.

A genius running wild...
Well , what can i say , we all know that 99% of anything Niven touch becomes pure gold.

And not by mistake either. He's as talented as the devil , and knows it. buy this book to taste a bit of his humor as well , find out why superman can't have sex with human weman or read a fascinating article about teleportation. there's some fantasy in there to in "What good is a glass dagger". Overall , a wonderfull book , writen lightly by one of the best writers the world has known.

My first Science Fiction book
I read All the Myriad Ways 20 years ago. It was the first science fiction book I ever read. Thousands of books later I still vividly remember the short stories I read here. If you like Larry Niven don't miss this book.

Excellent; worth the title story alone.
The nonfiction essays, as exercises in informed speculation, are well-done. But my favorite parts of this classic are the two main stories: "All The Myriad Ways," and "Inconstant Moon." The latter story is better than "Titanic." I've got an old 1975 copy of this, complete with cheezy 70's computer fonts on the cover.. boy am I glad my dad bought so many books before I was born! It's well worth seeking out a copy of this one... it will not disappoint.

LIKE STICKING YOUR FINGER IN A LIGHT SOCKET
THESE SHORT STORIES ARE JOLTING AND POWERFUL. IN A SHORT STORY THERE IS NOT A LOT OF TIME TO DRAW OUT LONG BORING DETAILS OR DRAMATIC SCENES. FOR EXAMPLE THE STORY I AM JUST THE DELIVERYMAN
THE CHARACTER IS AN ODINARY WORKING STIFF THAT FINDS HIMSELF ACCUSED OF MURDER. HE HAS AN ATTITUDE THAT DOESN'T HELP HIM MUCH.
AFTER HE ESCAPES THROUGH THE HELP OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS HE MANAGES TO CLEAR HIS NAME. IN THIS SHORT STORY THERE IS ACTION, HUMOR, AND CAMARADERIE. EVERYTHING A GREAT STORY NEEDS. I HIGHLY RECOMEND THIS ANTHOLOGY AS ONE OF THE BEST PRINTED IN THIS 21ST CENTURY.

Wardlaw's Short Story, The Snowstorm, Excellent
This collection by some of America's best short story authors contains an excellent variety. Dont Go Near the Stove is funny and imaginative. Wardlaw's The Snowstorm kept me on the edge of my seat. In fact, he has a book coming soon, Dracul-The Vampire Returns, published by Publish America, Books. It is as well written as The Snowstorm. If you like Horror and Vampires, this is not one to miss. Keep them comming.

Ray Pierce's stories are worth the read
Ray Pierce brings some real life to this book with his imaginative and well-edited stories. Yellow Dog is a concise account of the stages in a man's life and how he deals with challenges, and Dad...Stove will hit home for anyone with aging parents. His stories have a Hemingwayesque feel and I'd like to see more of his work.

My Daughter Loves This Book
My daughter is now 20 months, but has loved it since she was 6 months.

One of our favorites!
My daughter loves Veggietales and especially the whole Educational Series that they came out with including, Shapes, Colors, Opposites, etc. They are catchy with their fun rhymes and rhythms, bright colors, and familiar friends. If you want good clean fun, education, and further imparting good Christian values...VeggieTales are a way to go.

A+ book for kids
I bought this book for my nephew. He loved the Veggies and we've been trying to tach him the alphabet. Now that he's had his book a couple of months he is learning his alphabet with Bob, Larry, and all the Veggie Tales Friends! I highly reccomend this book to anyone who has children. Not only is it entertaining to see you favorite cartoon friends in a book but this is also a very educational book that teaches your child the alphabet and to read.
