One to Read Again and Again
What a fabulous book!! Everyone in the family enjoys reading and hearing this book again and again. It is so full of fun and imagination. Read it and see...you won't be disappointed.

A major hit with our 3-year old daughter.
Our daughter has taken this book out of her pre-school library 5 weeks in a row. We all love the wonderful, lively illustrations. Most of all, we love the message -- different can be absolutely beautiful! With Mrs. Pennywort's encouragement, the especially talented Pauline can produce any egg she wants. A great story on all levels.

One of our very favorite books!
It has become a tradition in my home to read this book before painting our Easter eggs. The story and illustrations are so comical, colorful and exciting that we can't wait to turn the page and see what happens next. Then we pick our favorite egg. What fun! You won't be disappointed.

Every Woman in the Bible

A wonderful book for a group or solo bible study!
Every Woman in the Bible is an eye opening book on the use of women's stories in the bible. Richards does an excellent job of explaining and guiding the reader. I would highly reccommend this book for anyone interested in studying women in the bible and how their stories apply to us today.

Wonderful for life application
I love this book. I haven't finished it in it's entirety because I am using it for a bible study group which meets weekly. When I've completed it I will amend this rating. But, so far, so good. It's a must buy.

Three Confirmations from Every Woman in the Bible
Every Woman in the Bible has shed light on three areas in the Bible that were very confusing to me. (I am so glad that Sue and Larry Richards wrote this book. )

First, Sue and Larry Richards explain how the relationships between men and women became distorted after the fall, and what their relationship was before the fall. This distortion is shown in the relationships between men and women during the time of the old testement; however, we see a different attitude toward women from Jesus in the new testiment that shows a restoration of the original relationship at the creation.

Second, the background information about the culture and perspectives during those times in which each woman lived, brings each woman alive and personalizes them, as well as completes an emphatic understanding for each woman.

Third, the discussion on Paul's perspective on women shows that Paul is not a male chavenist, and shows that Paul really does not contradict himself once we see the background history and the specific-situational-curcumstance he is adressing.

Every Woman in the Bible is a God-send, I believe, so that His people who are searching the scriptures for truth can draw niegher to Him.

Fred Astaire : A Bio-Bibliography
Published in Hardcover by Greenwood Publishing Group (1997)
Author: Larry Billman

Essential reading for the true Fred fanatic
This book is a treasure house of information, packed with tidbits and anecdotes that will have you reading for hours when you only meant to look up just that one bit of info. The author pulls it off with style in a readable format that makes fascinating going out of what could have been just a laundry list of dates. His passion for the subject, and joy in sharing it, shines through on every page. I was intially put off by the high price myself until I had a chance to look at a copy, and I realized that it was worth every penny, not to mention every minute of painstaking research that went into it.

The Best of All the Astaire Books
This book was recommended to me by Fred Astaire's daughter, who described it as "wonderful." I found it to be all of that and more. The author knew Mr. Astaire personally and made extensive use of the Astaires' papers (both Fred's and and his sister's) that are preserved at Boston University. The book covers the full gamut of Astaire's life and career, including vaudeville, stage, films, radio, recordings, and television. Insightful and meticulously researched, this is a "must have" for any admirer of the man who has been described as "the greatest musical perfomer in the history of motion pictures" and "the premier American dancer of the Twentieth Century."

A must for Astaire fans!
Let me start off by saying that this book is for serious Astaire fans only. If you have seen only one movie of Fred's, enjoyed it and wish to know more about the man, I suggest "Steps In Time". However, if you've seen most of his movies, listened to his music, watched his tv shows, and still want to know more than this book is invaluable. Billman covers all aspects of Fred's work. Each chapter is devoted to a different facet of Fred's career: filmography, radio, television, discography, etc. While giving the facts, Billman also mentions interesting anecdotes about Astaire that give you a glimpse at his character. Its definitely not "clinical" by just saying "Fred did this movie this year with this costar and this director". He does give that information but also mentions any difficulties with dances, how certain things were done, any problems with costars. He also includes a short biography of Fred, short because chances are if you're reading the book in the first place you're already familiar with Fred's life. I've found myself using it several times to check dates, supporting actors, and as a sort of checklist for my Fred collection. I highly recommend it even if it is rather expensive.

Can't Judge Book by Title
I got past the first two words of the title (Frugal Yachting)only to be faced with the third word (family). Maybe the rest of the title is what they should have called it: Adventuring in Small Sailboats. I usually avoid things labelled "family", since single folks like me are not welcome in such places, as much as I like kids. But I put all this aside, and with the help of reviews, I thought that this book might be a help to me. I was right. This book is a labor of love by an experienced sailor who shows you most of the boats that would match your interests, spinning yarns, anecdotes, and sailing tricks while he's at it. This book is a treasure. Buy it!

Entertaining and informative, a must read for smallboaters.
Frugal Yachting was all I hoped it would be. I learned much that was very helpful to me in increasing my enjoyment of my own small sailboat. I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in learning to use their small boat to it's fullest potential, at least, as far as cruising is concerned. This book is very well written, easy to understand and filled with valuable information. Read it!

Fantastic resource for beer budget sailboat dreamer.
Appreciated the down to earth approach to sailboat ownership and adventuring with a sense of enjoyment without feeling deprived. Short and sweet reviews of candidate sailboats to take home and cherish.

Better Late Than Never
This is the best book on discipline that I have read! This is a must-read for every concerned Christian parent. Distinguishing between extremes in parenting styles, this book has been very helpful for me. I only wish I had read it sooner!

An outstanding book on the proper raising of children.
Larry Tomzak puts it all together in this marvelous book on the proper raising of children with biblical principles. A must read for any Christian parent.

Wonderful, helpful, practical!!
As a pastor and the parent of five children myself, I can only say that this book is a wonderful tool and help to parents in a day and age where there is no restraint. Forget what others might say, IT IS BIBLICAL, loving, and very beneficial.

Great Guide
Have you ever read a book that felt like you were having a conversation with a good friend? Jeff Kane's new book, The Healing Companion makes me feel comforted, entertained, encouraged and enlightened; just as if I'd spent time talking with a good friend.

The book could be considered as a guide toward offering sick loved ones our healing presence. This guidance is valid for anyone relating to someone who is sick and is just as helpful to doctors, nurses and counselors as it is to family members and anyone who has a loved one who is sick.

A quote from page three says "This book will guide you toward offering sick loved ones your healing presence. By learning to ask them exactly how they're suffering and help them express their feelings thoroughly, you'll encourage an atmosphere of honesty. You'll move toward a perspective in which whatever happens physically, the emotional turmoil surrounding it will settle. All involved will benefit from increasing serenity."

I found especially helpful Jeff's discussion of how sick people suffer. He talks about really listening to their suffering and hearing their fears, anxieties, confusion, depression and rages. He says "I learned that people get emotional when they're sick and that fear and anger and despair aren't abnormal; they're a natural feature of sickness. In fact, I'd worry about the mental health of sick people who weren't affected by their consequent feelings. Hearing many hundreds of stories, I gradually learned that people don't generally suffer from their disease as much as from their emotions, the reactions their disease ignites in them." (page seven)

The rest of the chapters in the book are just as juicy and relevant as the above examples. In "Speaking With TLC", Jeff encourages speaking (only after much listening) with truth, leanness and compassion. He gives examples and practical questions to ask ourselves to pass the "TLC" test.

My two favorite chapters are "Welcoming Mystery" and "Healing Yourself". The first deals with the existential questions that illness can stir and the second with "continual" self care. What profound encouragement both offer for living in this world.

I truly enjoyed reading this book (and have read several sections more than once). The wonderful stories of courage and healing inspired me to be a better listener, a better friend and even a better person. Thank you Jeff.

J. Kane, The Healing Companion
Anyone confronted with the serious sickness of a family member of friend will find this sensitive but unsentimental book invaluable. Jeff Kane not only shows how the emotional support and participation of one's friends and family help the sick person in his or her illness (that is, the social and spiritual disclocation and emotional and psychological suffering caused by the disease), but also gives very concrete, practical suggestions on listening, responding, respecting, and feeling and showing compassion. Dr. Kane's insights about the experience of suffering, the devastation it causes and the opportunities it offers both the sick person and the care-giver for self-knowledge and personal transfromation make this a book to be read and reread time and again.

Healing others, healing yourself
For anyone who has stood beside a hospital bed wondering, "What can I do to help?" Dr. Jeff Kane's THE HEALING COMPANION is an invaluable new resource. Beginning with beautifully told stories of people redefining their lives after a diagnosis of cancer, Dr. Kane shares the essence of his decades of work exploring the nature and sources of human suffering. He then goes on to offer practical techniques, which anyone with a willing heart and open mind can learn, to alleviate suffering and aid healing. A remarkable book whose applications go far beyond the boundaries of medical uses, and can have a profound transformative impact on how we perceive the meaning of our lives.

Be a Starship Subaru captain!
Being a previous VW Bug owner and having gotten the original "VW Idiot's Guide" all greasy and dirty, I love this book. (It was fascinating to learn that Fuji (Subaru) built their motor based on the original Porsche/VW design but added water cooling!).It puts you in touch with your car...gives you confidence that you can become a hobbiest/mechanic... and you can easily figure out what maintenance you can do at home with minimum tools and which maintenance you should let some real mechanic take on. Best of all: Save money! Do maintence yourself! Spot problems before they amount to big money! As they say in the original VW book: "Know your ass....(donkey)" and it will treat you well!

Absolutely fantastic
I never really knew a thing about cars, and received this as a gift 8 years ago. Motivated by limited cash and that nagging sense of being taken advantage of at car repair places, I started making my own repairs and doing my own maintenance. My 84 GL is, now, in way better shape than my dogeared, oil-stained copy of this book, and I feel much more in control
Owens rules--the book is exhaustive and methodical and, at the same time, entertaining. The advice is wise (like that of a cool older brother, in one reviewer's words), the directions precise, the illustrations great (especially the one with the dogbone, the pie, and the toilet).
Thanks, Larry & Joe.

Excellent, excellent resource for all Subaru owners
I got my Subaru GL used about 3 years ago. It needed a bit of work. After the dealer persuaded my to let him replace all of the gaskets in the engine, I didn't have much money left for any other maintenance. Thankfully, I found How to Keep Your Subaru Alive. Using this great resource as a guide, I've done all kinds of repair and maintenance on my car. Now if only the publisher would update it so I can work on my Dad's '93 Legacy... Oh, well.

Nonlocal mind and the (possible) power of prayer
It's probably tempting to dismiss this book as "New Age" claptrap. That would be a mistake.

In fact Dossey is highly critical of the "New Age" movement. And despite some overblown cover blurbs, he doesn't claim to have "proven" anything about the power of prayer in healing; he's making suggestions and exploring possibilities, not laying down law.

Nor, for the most part, is his speculation wild or unfounded. His suggestions are founded on two things: empirical research that seems to show prayer is effective in promoting the biological growth of certain forms of life under controlled laboratory conditions, and the theological/philosophical view that reality is ultimately a single, universal, "nonlocal" Absolute Mind.

However controversial these foundations might be, he presents his suggestions with proper caution. And he is especially careful to avoid falling into the New Age blame-the-patient trap; he is well aware that prayer doesn't always achieve the results we might like and that this isn't because somebody has done something to "choose" or "deserve" ill health.

On the contrary, he has a healthy sense that prayer is really (though this language isn't quite his) for the purpose of adjusting us to the Divine Will rather than vice-versa. (Anthony de Mello tells a story somewhere about a man who said, "In your country it is regarded as a miracle when God does the will of a human being. In my country it is regarded as a miracle when a human being does the will of God.") On his view, the "power" of prayer is shown as much in our acceptance of our health limitations as in their elimination.

There are a couple of places where Dossey threatens to wander off the deep end (e.g. his suggestion that prayer can change the past), and there's a little bit of language (e.g. "Era I, Era II, and Era III") that recalls bad 1970s self-help books. But I really have only one bone to pick with Dossey: he tends at times to overstate the difference between his views and those of traditional, "classical" theism.

There is a tendency among those (of whom I am one, which is in part how I know this) who left their childhood religions in their early teens to assume, more or less unconsciously, that our understanding of such religion was complete at that time and none of its adherents understood any of the cool things we went on to discover for ourselves. It's hard to shake one's implicit belief that those hidebound "fundamentalists" couldn't _possibly_ have known any of this nifty "spirituality" stuff; "dogmatic" religion is, of course, the arch-enemy of "true" spirituality -- isn't it?

Dossey has a very mild tendency in this direction. In consequence I suspect he will occasionally leave more traditional religious believers with the sense that they are being misunderstood, patronized, or both.

But it doesn't happen very often, and it hardly happens at all in this book. On the whole, Dossey's approach tends to confirm rather than undermine the great theistic religions' view of prayer.

A wealth of information on prayer-based healing!
Dr. Dossey explains in HEALING WORDS how prayer-based healing works. It has been scientifically proven in hundreds of experiments to be a balanced part of health care that can significantly decrease health problems and significantly improve our quality and quantity of life. Dossey shares some of his own real-life stories of caring for patients... including an American Indian shaman, who requested Dr. Dossey's medical help for his aching neck! This book contains a wealth of information about prayer experiments written in Dossey's characteristically down-to-Earth style. I love the way Dossey raises questions about whether some prayer experiments are ethical, and why some scientists continue to resist the mounting body of evidence that so clearly shows how prayer has a powerful effect on healing.

God, Allah, the Tao, Buddha=the non-local mind
Dossey again displays an inquisitive intellect. This work transcends a narrow, dogmatic "god," to approach a universal "non-local" mind which encompasses and connects all existence. Dossey is cognizant of the power of words and emotion... of the impact they can have on humanity. This is not "New Age;" it is a modern compilation and interpretation of ancient wisdom. Bravo!

How to become an expert ..
Well not quite, but almost there. This book, more than most, really lays out the mindset and strategies of expert bridge players. The chapter on the "5 lines of Defense" is itself worth the price of the book, and can be used by anyone, even beginners. If you are an intermediate player, just go buy this book! If you're just starting out in bridge, read a few beginner books and then come back to this. This is an amazing book!!

Unparalleled
The title of the Book made one wonder if there is really something common among experts. Being no expert myself, I was curious, too, to find that out. This book illustrates the fine points separating good players from experts in all aspects of the game. When I was reading the book, many deals started flowing through my mind and I realized that had I read this book earlier, I could have easily impromved my results. This book is highly recommended to all those players who want to take that final step to being called "expert".

How The Experts Win At Bridge
This book has helped my overall game more than any other bridge book. I particularly benefitted from the concepts of "getting your bid in early" and the "5 lines of defense." The methodology suggested by the authors for when to play safe and when to take risk for the overtrick in match point play was also of major benefit.

I have purchased copies for 2 of my partners so my master point total can increase that much faster. I would recommend the book for any serious player, whether his/her game is match points, team, or rubber bridge.
