the last bookmaker
A rare comination of fact coupled with fiction. Finally an accurate book in relating the inner workings of the criminal justice system from the viewpoints of the Judges, defendant, prosecutor and the cops. Combined with great characters and a great suspense thriller, it's tough to beat. Very enjoyable.

Baltimore Bad Boys
If you love to love the Bad Boys, you have to read this book. A great story with characters so real you'll wonder if it's fact instead of fiction.

Fantastic & Suspensful!
I just loved the characters and the vivid setting details. This would make a great tv mini-series! The book had everything! Chip Silverman and Bob Litman have made another great read! Keep the books coming!

The only book that tells it like it is
Chuck Dean accurately reports what goes on inside the head of a Viet Nam vet. If you want to know what troubles these people read NAM VET. He identifies the cause of the trouble and, best yet, offers a guaranteed solution.

Nam Vet showed me the way to overcome my PTSD from Vietnam!!
I was so glad to realize that I wasn't a bad person, but I had PTSD from my experiences in Vietnam. Chuck Dean has showed in this book the way for all veterans to deal with and overcome PTSD. Having served with the 101st Abn. Div. as an infantry squad leader, I came home thinking all I had to do was go back to life as it was before I went to Nam. It didn't work that way. Within the first few months back home I almost killed my neighbor who was threatening me. Boy! was that a wakeup call for me. From then on I was real careful of my anger. But not until I was exposed to the information contained in Nam Vet, did I really get the help I needed to overcome my PTSD. Thanks for the book Chuck!

A literal "life saver" for thousands of veterans.
When I first picked up "Nam Vet" I could not put it down. The text in the book was a mirrored image of my own struggles with "Post Traumatic Stress Disorder" (PTSD). It revealed very clearly that I was not standing alone with my pain related to my combat experiences in Vietnam. Chuck Dean has been able to offer some basic guidelines for recognizing and dealing with PTSD. He will be the first to admit that the concepts he portrays are not based upon medical expertise, but upon Godly principles. If a veteran or family member remains open to the rationale put forth in the "Nam Vet" book, then I'm certain that they will receive something of value from its content. The book is laid out in a simple manner which is easy to understand. Anyone who suffers from any kind of PTSD, whether war related or not, should read "Nam Vet". I have spent several years laboring with Chuck Dean in ministry to veterans. I am convinced that a day does not pass where someone somewhere is assisted by the "Nam Vet" book. I would encourage you to take this vital step towards recovery from PTSD. You will never regret it.

A "Must Read" for insight into the 60's and true too!!
WOW-Larry Colton brought it all back to me - I graduated in 1963 and his description of the times was poignant - it all flashed before me again. Great insight into how some of us were not that enthusiastic to "get involved", but he confirmed my feelings that this was truly an incredible time to live and just how much that time period in history has affected all of us in one way or another. It is great to see how even though 5 lives were lived very closely in college, once released into the "outside" world, how much different they really are from each other. It was really interesting to see how each matured(?) in their own way. I loved this book and have advised a lot of friends about it. Although hard to find, it's worth the effort! If you want to know what it REALLY was like to live during the terrific time period referred to as the 60's, this is the book to read. Kudos for the male frame of mind insight too. Thanks to Larry Colton for a great book

Great character study on 5 fraternity bro from Cal (60's).
Colton chronicles the lives of 5 Pike fraternity brothers through their time at CAL during the mid sixties to the nineties. I found some of Colton's descriptions to be belly laughers as he probes his brothers disfunctional love lives and the many ups and downs of their lives. It brought back memories of college life, and rugby life after college. The story caused me to ponder how life deals you a mixed bag, and it particullarly caused me to think about relationships. I highly recommend the book.

Excellent story of 60s Campus Life
I first read this book when it came out about 7 years ago & am just now getting around to reviewing it. I remember the story as if I'd just read it last week-5 frat boys who became Big Men On Campus, their stories are true and there's never a dull moment. It's all here, the keg parties, the football games, the protests, etc. The book would've made a great tv mini-series, providing they let Larry Colton write the screenplay. Anyway, if this ever comes back in print you should make it a point to buy it. Highly recommended.

The best book on alternative medicine
This has to be one of the most useful books on alternative medicine ever published, and now it's been completely updated and revised in 2002. Instead of getting just one doctor's perspective, you get the experiences of over 400 physicians. Whether you want to learn more about acupuncture, applied kinesiology, and other therapies or need to look up the treatments for a particular health problem, this is the book to go to first. Highly recommended!

An indispensable reference volume for alternative therapies!
Packed with tons of useful information, this book seems to have something on everything. Everyone I have shown the book to has marveled at its content, and the way it presents all the information in an unbiased manner.

This book deals with information which can be hard to acquire. The contemporary medical establishment is well entrenched in its ways, but we all "know" there are other therapies and cures out there, but where do we find out about them? This book is the answer!

"Alternative Medicine" does not endeavor to go into full detail about any of the therapies and treatments presented. Rather, it provides a valuable starting point at which to begin your serach for information on how to cure yourself or a loved one.

I heartily recommend this book to anyone who needs a comprehensive reference volume for medical maladies and their cures.

Correlation of Medical Knowledge
Just to show a small part of the accuracy of this book. If you go to page 716,under the title of " HEART DISEASE " third paragraph which starts off with " interest in Vitamin B6 deficiency. This was a study by Dr. Kilmer S. McCully, M.D. Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School in reference to Heart disease and lowering the HOMOCYSTEINE Levels, which are free radical generators capable of oxidixing cholesterol, one of the major contributing factors in heart disease. The (AMA) American Medical Association back then and until recently said he was wrong in his theory. But, most recently on the television show 20/20 with Barbara Walters, the AMA said they were wrong and that Dr. McCully was right back in 1969 with his studies. Which I believe shows just a fraction of the importance of reading from this invaluable book of Knowledge.I futher beleive that members of the AMA should be more receptive to the thoughts and studies done by Alternative Medicine Doctors , who are only trying to better Mankind. A little more open mindness would be a good begining !

The Bible for Saxophone
This book is the widely acknowledged prime source for saxophone information. Every sax player should have it! It brings together a wealth of information about many aspects of saxophone playing that is not available in any other single source. It explains the embouchure (lip) needed to play and even has exercises for helping to develop it. It has a fingering chart including alternate fingerings. It also has a very useful chart of pitch alteration fingerings - if your instrument has a few notes that are flat or sharp (very common), then these fingerings can be used to bring them back in tune with the rest of the horn. The essentials of breathing for saxophone are also discussed, again including exercises for developing breath control. The various aspects of tone control are discussed thoroughly. Also the legato and staccatto techniques and how to properly tongue a note are explained very clearly. Mouthpiece terminology and design considerations are shown. Advanced exercises are also given for "mastering the technique". This involves learning to keep the fingers in contact with the keys, proper hand positioning, etc. Doubling (i.e., playing a second instrument, like a clariniet) is often required of the saxophonist and this is discussed. Altissimo fingerings are also shown, although only the advanced students will be interested in them.

Back to Saxophone Playing
After many years of palying and teaching sax in the USA and Brasil. I really enjoyed this book a lot, you get books with a lot of music but not enough details to pass on and use yourself. The book is great for beginners to get off on the right start and for even pros to refresh and brush up on their chops and techniques! Teachers will love this tool also.

A professional's opinion
Hello there fellow saxophone players. I hold degrees in classical and jazz saxophone. I've been playing for 16 years and teaching for 10. This book is a good read, and provides much of the supplementary information that can help you on your way. However, there is no substitute for a great teacher. Any teacher worth their salt will lend their copy of this book to you, by the way. A comment about the information on the emboucher. There are generally two ways of forming the emboucher, this is more tense of the two. So that poor guy from China that changed his emboucher to a closed position (as opposed to lip out) no doubt that was a lot of work. A beautiful sound is the goal, whichever emboucher you choose. You may email me at funk347@excite.com if you have more questions about saxophone playing. I'd recommend everyone buy this book for an interesting and informative read. If you're learning the saxophone on your own, you need a book with music! I'd suggest Rubank Elementary Method for Saxophone

An excellent story about growing up as an alcoholic!
Jack Erdmann tells a story with more ups and downs than a rollercoaster! It's amazing that he lived to tell about it and he provides hope for anyone who's ever considered himself to be a "hopeless alcoholic". It's a story for anyone who's ever struggled with the "love/hate" relationship with an alcoholic parent. Erdmann paints a moving emotional picture in telling his story! An exceptional book!

I thought it was terrific.
Whiskey's Children touched me far more than Angela's Ashes. It hit me in emotional places I hadn't visited for a long, long time. The prose was brilliant. As Annie Lamott the New York Times Best Selling Author wrote in her forward: "a story so beautifully told it will leave you shaking with wonder". Exactly! When I read the rave reviews on the jacket I was struck by Senator George McGovern's remarks: "Heartbreaking and soaring. A testament of survivial and hope for all who suffer from this affliction". D. May

I believe Whiskey's Children is the most powerful and inspirational book ever written on alcoholism.

Everyone who loves a fast and gripping read should run, not walk, to the nearest bookstore and pick one up.

Whiskey's Children is an emotional rollercoaster!
Jack Erdmann has walked the walk of an alcoholic and takes us inside the mind, heart and soul of the person that is hopelessly addicted. The emotional trauma that is involved in the machine of a family disease is gut renching. I cried and I laughed and I held my breath. Nobody knows the incomprehensible hold of alcohol like this author. I have read many books about the disease of alcohol and recovery testamonials but this book lays it on the line like no other. There is hope for the alcoholic and that comes shinning through in Mr. Erdmann's book. The machinery has to stop somewhere in the family of the alcoholic. It seems to be a genetic, inherited disease that needs early intervention. People do not have to go through the hell Jack did if they will heed the warning signs. Friends and family have a mandatory responsibility to intervene when the signals of alcohol or addiction are waving frantically in their faces. A great book!!!!

You CAN Retire Young: How to Retire in Your 40s or 50s Without Being Rich

Amazon base price: $22.00

Valuable Information
I just finished reading Larry Ferstenou's book "You Can Retire Young" and found it to be not only packed with valuable information on retirement, but also interesting and entertaining.
It's helpful not only to those who are planning for their retirement in their 40's, but also for people like me who retired at 55. Larry gives a lot of details from his personal life including success and failure. I found his personal budget items and practical suggestions to be very helpful. I especially enjoyed the way he leads the reader from chapter to chapter with finesse and continuity. A good read all around.

A must read for anyone EVER considering retiring!
When I first started reading "You can retire young" I was confused why anyone would actually consider leaving the workforce early. I have always felt that our job in life is to give everything we could give until we could no longer
move. Throughout this book Larry Ferstenou has allowed me a completely different perspective on life. He has actually retired young and, more importantly, has not quit living! If anything his pace has quickened. The author's writing style is one that instills confidence that anyone can do this. He teaches you three simple rules that anyone can easily follow to build a net worth sufficient to retire. He also goes into great detail about the questions you should ask yourself before you consider retiring. With so many books out there only portraying one side of the issue it was refreshing to find one that really looks at your options from every angle. This book is well researched, well written, and down to earth. I would recommed this book not only to anyone considering retiring young but also to anyone who would like to retire at ANY point in their future!

Great BOOK - Great INTERVIEW
This is probably one of the best books on the subject, in part because Larry (and his wife Kris) share exactly how they did it. Retiring young isn't going to be possible for everyone, but with this book your chances go up 1000% . One of the best things about this book is how they show you that you don't have to be "rich" you just need enough. It takes the stress and fear of failure out of making it happen.

This book is the proactive approach to managing your life style, your savings, and your investments. Don't trust Social Security or employer pension funds. Get this book and take charge of when and how you retire.

I interviewed Larry Ferstenou on "The Inside Success Show" and loved every minute of it. I believe in what he's teaching because I retired at 40 and I'm now living the dream life. Read his book and find out how you can too.
Here's some of what you'll learn from the book:
** How Larry and Kris were able to retire at ages 42 and 40 respectively
** Why you should not rely on Social Security of pension plans
** What 3 simple keys will bring you financial independence quickly
** How you can save faster than you ever thought possible.
** Why you should learn how to pick your own investments
** How to prepare for retirement even during hard times
** And much, much more ..

Grandpa Tucker's Rhymes & Tales

DON'T MISS THE SMILES!
I am a sixth grade teacher in TN and came across Grandpa Tucker on the internet while searching for holiday materials to use for my class. Little did I know that a few seconds of my time would lead to hours of enjoyment for my students. The rhymes are entertaining yet have a moral. They are wonderful to share with the children. The light in their eyes and the smile on their face is priceless. Sammy the Snake is the most popular snake in the class! Sammy has become part of my classroom. The children love Grandpa Tucker's rhymes and tales. It was important for them to know that someone cares about them and is writing with them in mind. The stories are filled with children's language such as the Snickers. The underlining message is always clear and a wonderful to share with the children. Thanks Grandpa Tucker for your wonderful poetry. You always bring a smile to our faces and the children send you a perfect 10 and thumbs up!

Grandpa Tucker Writes A Winner!
One summer, while searching educational sites for my 4th grade students, I found Grandpa Tucker's site with his wonderful poems, tales, and new words for old songs. What a joy! Reading them reminded me of the excitement when, as a child, I first realized how wonderful words could be, especially in poetry. I couldn't have been more delighted with Bob's writings for the 8-12 year old child and for all of us out there who remember being a kid. So I purchased copies for gifts and an additional 5 copies to use with my students. The investment was well worth while. To say my students truly love Sammy Snake and the wonderful tales Bob Tucker weaves is an understatement. The reason for that is not only Bob's charming command of the English language, but also because he makes Sammy and his other characters seem "real"--something that is very appealing to children. Although Sammy's a snake, Bob gives him the human qualities of a little boy, who's living and learning and trying to grow up in the world to become a good snake. And what makes it even better, Sammy's a snake who really cares about others. Sometimes he gets into trouble, like all children do. But when he makes mistakes, he gets gentle, loving guidance from the adults and friends in his life. As a teacher and parent, I especially appreciate that in his those verses. Many of Bob's poems center around Sammy and his experiences throughout the year and the holidays ("Sammy, the Valentine Snake", for one). Bob also creativity draws his audience in with such poems as "Pum-Pum, Pum-Pum, Pumpkin Pie", "Chocolate Math", and "Ode to a Hamburger", just to name a few. Children will love this book and read it over and over for a long time to come!

Poetry That Is Fun!
"Grandpa Tucker's Rhymes and Tales" is a treasure, packed with delightful humor and brilliant in the use of captivating rhymes. My students and I became acquainted with Grandpa Tucker via his enjoyable website where fun rules and where the love of language is passed to each visitor. Middle school students are drawn to the unique story poems and appreciate the natural rhythm and flow of the verses. Special favorites to all readers are the adventures of Sammy Snake, the lovable and sometimes incorrigible character who always leaves everyone smiling. There are 18 of the Sammy Snake stories in this volume. Parents and teachers appreciate poems that motivate students to read and to think about themes relevant to today's youth. The students always beg for more when we read Grandpa Tucker's rhymes, so we are thrilled to learn there is a collection of joyful poetry in this volume that can be shared anytime, anywhere!

Grandpa Tucker surely understands that the love of language shall, hopefully, ever remain the most endearing and enduring gift to be passed from parents and teachers to children. This book offers the most effective and charming way I have found to pass that gift along.

Excellent introduction
A Larry Niven novel, especially lately, can be a hit or miss affair but it's clear the man still knows what he's doing and there's no better way to prove that to pick up this hefty book. Not so much a collection of short stories as a retrospective and an introduction just about every piece here has something to recommend it to new and old readers. Niven has some of the best hard science ideas ever put down on paper but sometimes he forgets about the plot when writing his longer works, in short story form all the brilliance shines right through and you can see why millions revere the man as a writer of ideas. By and large the short stories are all excellent, ranging from the really good ("Cloak of Anarchy" "The Fourth Profession") to the merely okay (the story set in the Smoke Ring). For new readers there are even excerpts from his more famous novels, though only a couple highlight the best portions of the book (especially "The Mote in God's Eye" bit, which reminds those of us who have read it why we loved the book so much in the first place), all are interesting. But even better than the stories are the series of essays interspersed throughout the book. Some are Niven just goofing and having a good time (the bit about Superman's attempt at mating is one of the funniest things I've ever read and is worth the price of the book alone) and others are serious pieces on science fiction and writing in general. Rarely do readers get such a peek inside the mind of one of their favorite writers and it's a welcome look. Overall if you have even a passing interest in Niven you can't go wrong, since it focuses on what he's really good at and with so many stories and essays, the chance of a reader getting bored is very slim indeed.

Changed my life
I haven't bought the book from amazon.com. I haven't bought it at all. I borrowed it at my local library, looking for some leftover Niven after I finished everything else.

Now I am determined to buy it, if not here in Israel then through Amazon.com. That book changed my life.

The short stories are fantastic, carrying unlimited ideas and creating countless playgrounds for the mind. "The Fourth Profession" in the lead, along with "Cloak of Anarchy" and others, make up some of the finest short stories I've ever read. The essays are mavellous, making you ponder, wonder, and occasionally laugh. The parts taken from other novels are a nostalgic aroma, reminding the reader once again that reading on Niven novel connects you, inevitably, to the world of ideas that had come to life by this man's writing.

I've read the book AFTER reading most of the important Niven stuff. I believe this is wrong: one should read it once, then read the other stuff, and then return to N-Space for a whole new reading experience.

Buy it. You won't regret it.

Wonderful Retrospective on the career of one of the best.
N-Space and its Companion Playgrounds of the Mind form a wonderful retrospective of the carrer of one of the best science fiction writers. N-Space provides a selection of short stories, especially ones that have not yet appeared in book form, and have been hard to find. It also provides some of his better stories, and gives essays, gossip, and a view into the world of a Science Fiction writer. You really come away knowing Larry Niven, the man, along with a better understading of his fiction. You get some very interesting factiods (did you know that the Kzinti are in Star Trek? neither did I!), and lots of enjoyment, from never read short stories, to anecdotes about your favorite Niven Novel, an unbeatable bargain. N-Space is a great introduction to the various works of Larry Niven (and sometimes co-author in crime Dr. Jerry Pournelle), as well as a great resourse for those who would like to learn more about what they have read and known for years. I rarely give the 5 out of 5 rating, but I have no hesitations here. Highest Reccomendation.

Complicated recipes, but a fun book
"The California Pizza Kitchen Cookbook" is a great book to read, with interesting notes about the great pizzas served at the California Pizza Kitchen restaurants along with interesting recipes of the pizzas. The recipes appear complicated, with a long list of ingredients one might not have stocked in their home, but it is somewhat of an adventure to test out the recipes.

Take the Time for Great Pizza
At a recent family cookout, our host used these recipes for CPK pizzas and they were amazing! Mind you, it took time. In fact, he prepared the dough the night before and spent quite a bit of time assembling all the ingredients. But it was a fun process because everyone was sitting around the kitchen enjoying conversation while others chopped ingredients or checked the oven. Some things are simply worth the extra time and effort. If you are looking for something quick & easy, this isn't your cookbook. But if you want to take the time for great pizza, plus maybe add a little creativity of your own, the CPK cookbook is perfect. The salad recipes are wonderful, too.

Great Tasting Pizza and Pasta
CPK brings a wide variety of international cuisines to the pizza crust. I was delighted when they came out with this cookbook, but was disappointed to find that my favorite item from the restaurant, the Oriental Chicken Salad, is not included in the cookbook. Well, they need to get me back into the restaurant once in a while. The recipes make extensive use of cilantro and garlic. Also note, that although the recipes are easy to make (as cited by the other reviewers), the first time you make the recipe it make take a long time. For example, the first time I made the Shrimp Scampi pizza (listed as Shrimp-Garlic in the book), it took me about 3 hours, not including the dough preparation time. This is because just making one ingredient, the roasted garlic, took about an hour. Since then I have learned which ingredients can be prepared in advance. The Shrimp Scampi Pizza with whole wheat crust is the best pizza that I have ever tasted, and that opinion has been shared by everyone who has tasted it. It is better than the restaurant's and worth the trouble. Another family favorite from this book is the broccolli with sun-dried tomatoes. Again, except for getting all that garlic peeled, this recipe has a minimum number of ingredients, is quick to make (30 minutes), is extremely tasty, and can feed a crowd. You feel really special when you get to have this for lunch the next day.
