A great Dragonlance companion..
Being a fan of Dragonlance for many years, but also being unlucky to not get this book the first time it was published, I was very happy to see that the publishers decided to put this book up for sale again. "Leaves from the Inn of the Last Home", is great if you want to know more history on the Dragonlance. It has a lot of info on the Gods of Krynn. There is deeply detailed information about the past of Krynn. Including wars, gods, dragons, and anything else you could possibly want to know.

There are also songs, poems, and recipes. Many of the songs and poems were published in the original Chronicles or Legends. But it is nice to have them in one place in easy reach. The recipes range from Gully Dwarf Stew to Otik's spicy potatoes. This book is definatley an entertaining companion to the Dragonlance world. People looked for it everywhere when it out out-of-print. So what better time to get it than now when they are publishing it again.

Don't miss it!
I first saw this book on a visit to the States in Feburary 1997. Since then I have been kicking myself for not buying it, seeing as it cannot be found anywhere! It is the complete sourcebook of Krynn, a must for all Role Players or Gamers, and even fanatical Krynn Collectors. It contains background information on the Heroes of the Lance and even Kenderish maps. There are songs, recipes, and the book itself is embodied with the true spirit of Dragonlance Adventuring. Being a small-time collector and currently owning 48 D.L. books, take my advice- this is not an oppertunity to be missed!

A Fascinating Story
This is a fascinating story actually written by an Alzheimer's patient in the early stages of the disease. Larry was diagnosed at age 54. This came after his getting lost on a trip, driving more than a hundred miles out of the way of the route to his destination before realizing it. Larry tries to see the good in this, writing that he has "more compassion for people, birds, deer, and the like" and he says "If when you read this book you feel a certain sadness...let yourself be sad, but not for me...I have had a good and prosperous life...Most of all, I have had the love of some beautiful people...and I have loved them, too."

A "MUST READ"
I picked up Larry's Book, "Show me the way to go home", quite by chanceat a local book store. I was interested in Alzheimer's disease because my mother died from it a few years ago. I could not put the book down until I had read the last page. I read it again the next day and then again and again. Then I sat down and cried for a week. I found that I had fallen in Love with this handsome, dashing, man. If you have a friend or relative that is afflicted with this disease, you must read Larry's Book. He has achieved the impossible. He has given us an insight into the mind of person afflicted with this terrible disease. After reading his book and looking at his picture on the back cover, I feel that I know him well enough to call him Larry. Thank You, Larry, for your book and God Bless!Kathleen

Don't go through early diagnosis alone...
My mother was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's Disease at fifty years. I found Larry Rose's account of what was happening to be a wonderful way to relate to her in a way that she was unable to describe to me. This book will be a "hard to put down" account of daily life for those facing similar experiences along the way through this dibilitating illness that robs so much. Larry finds a positive light to shine on purpose in life and to keep on living. He is truly a courageous story that should not be missed. A big five star read with a human approach.

Indispensible Guide to a trip to Munich
I have used this book twice on trips to Munich and each time it proved its worth. The directions to various beer halls are simple, yet unfallable. Even if you are not going to Munich, this is a good read. His descriptions of the beer gardens are very entertaining.

A Very Useful Guide!
I took this book with me to Munich and followed its recommendations closely. As a result, I found some terrific places off the usual tourist beat that made for some great memories. I strongly recommend this book to any beer lovers who want to get beyond the Hofbrauhaus.

The only guide you need to Munich!!
This book came in handy when I was in Munich a few years back (I have an older edition). The rating of the beers are pretty accurate. I loved the fact it gave directions on how to get to each place. It's especially nice for those of us who don't speak German. This book is a definate must have for beer drinking travelers. :)

wonderful, clear book!
Very good book on vipassana practice and how to do it. Rosenberg writing style is very good and his simple and clear explanations of complex or confusing ideas is most helpful. One of the best books I've read on buddhism or meditation. Highly recommended.

Best book I've ever read on insight meditation!
Simple and written in plain English. Larry Rosenberg is a wonderful teacher. I read it over and over and get something new out of it every time.

Delicious, delightful introduction to meditation
I can't agree more with the other reviewers, and rather than rehash what they wrote, I'll simply say this: This book opened my eyes to a very simple, very painless way of meditating. I had no idea that insightful breathing could be so easy! Rosenberg has a great writing style and a wonderful sense of humor, making his book a delight to read. HIGHLY recommended.

Liked Everything but the Ending
I am a new fan of Larry Brown, and have lately been reading everything by him I can get my hands on. Joe is a powerful and at times brutal novel, a notch below Father and Son in my humble opinion but worthwhile reading nonetheless.

Once again Brown explores the lives of drunk white trash, this time in the dusty small towns near Tupelo Mississippi. The novel has three main characters: Joe, the aging, proud, divorced, hard-drinking ex con who contracts to poison trees for income, and who hires young Gary on his work crew. Gary is about 15 years old, but is not quite sure cause as has no birth records and in fact no legal address. His dad, Wade, is a horrific drunk who moves his family around squatting in abandoned houses while he puts the kids to work foraging for cans and bottles to collect deposit money. When that doesn't generate enough, Wade steals any meager earnings the kids may make on their own.

The budding relationship between Joe and his best worker Gary is the core of the novel, as Joe slowly learns the extent of the horrors of the kid's home life. Of course what would a novel of the south be without a few humerous diversions involving brothels, gambling, green policemen and inept hunters, etc.

I think my only real hesitancy in giving the novel five stars revolves around the ending, which for me was anticlimatic and unsatisfying. I know writers are sometimes criticized for tying up all loose ends too neatly, as if they reached their pre-ordained page limit and had to run, but the ending of Joe was a little too open-ended for my liking. Anyway, for fans of Harry Crews, William Gay (and I am Gay's biggest fan) or Tom Franklin, give Brown a shot he consistently delivers a solid punch.

powerful poetics from a master of the game
so, here i am again, drunk, trying to tell you why i think "joe" is a wonderful novel and worthy of your attention. i'm not going to mention the beautiful pain of the writing, or the story, which will melt you at twenty paces, or the fact that you are abundantly aware, from the first word, that Brown cares so much about his characters that I feel like he'd die before he'd sell them out. no. you won't get that review here. what you'll get, instead, is an honest plea to read a miraculous novel of blood and redemption, told by a modern Southern master- i'll go with the "accessible Faulkner" tag- that shows you how life is. lacking pretension, lacking garnish; Larry Brown lays the line out like it should be laid out- wholesome, without hamhanded proselytizing. which is magic. his gifts, nurtured in an Oxford, MI fire station, shoot honesty and magic through you like embers from a fire that you didn't set yet have to deal with- i.e., life.

joe is a mess, and his arrangement is a mess, and yet brown pulls it off. with time to spare.

magic. sheer magic.

Why Don't More People Read Larry Brown?
This is one of the best books of the decade, by one of the best writers of the half-century. Brown's work has been widely praised by critics everywhere but the reading public has not caught on to his mastery of the art. It's been said over and over that he is the Faulkner of his generation. He is, but he's more accessible than Faulkner and a lot easier read, although his books are not beach reads. Joe in particular is disturbing and heavy, but it is an important work that will make you laugh, shudder, and most importantly--think. If you're a fan of serious Southern literature that shows how people in the real New South live, read Joe.

A very exciting conpiracy novel to read, it's a must read!
I enjoyed reading this well-written book until I couldn't put it down. I found the plot very interesting and unbelievable. The way Mr. Liu presented the story is intriguing. I would recommend anyone along the Asia Pacific region to read it. We can definitely learn something from this book.

A book you don't want to put down.
It is hard to imagine this is Mr. Liu's first book. It is obvious he has spent much time in researching his subject from the workings of the Royal Hong Kong Police to the CIA. Athough a work of fiction, Mr. Liu has written the book in such a manner you feel you are right there among the students in Tiananmen Square, with the CIA agents in making their devious plans, and with the Chinese authorities on the crackdown. A very exciting and enjoyable read. I highly recommend it.

A breath-taking novel !
I admire the Author's vast experience and understanding of the inside of China in particular his indepth knowledge on Chinese communinism and the People Liberty Army. The book was written in a diary manner and the readers can feel the reality of this story in particular when the readers read this book at the 10th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Incident.

The Advocate: An insider's view of the courtroom
Larry Axelrood uses his years of experience in the criminal courtrooms of Chicago to give the reader a very realistic and exciting view into the criminal court system. His writing captures your attention through his ability to familiarize you with the characters. In an intense way, he places you into the minds of the main subjects.

There is an interesting twist at the end that caught this reader by surprise. I found the book a fast read as each particular segment of the story seemed to launch me into the next. There is excellent descriptive detail, for example, demonstrating how the slightest change in the facial expression of a juror can create havoc in an attorney's mind. There are the racing thoughts of a prosecutor versus a defense attorney that expose everything from pride to paranoia and the vicious extents an attorney will go to to defend his or her position.

I found the story quite interesting, while the use of the author's first hand experiences over time, his detailed observations, perhaps his own anxious moments, contribute greatly to the effectiveness of his ability to bring the reader directly into the story.

There's a new writer in town
Move over Mr. Turow, there's a new "writer" in town.

Having read and enjoyed all of Scott Turow's works, and being a native Chicagoan, attorney and avid reader, I thought that I'd give Larry Axelrood's book a quick read. My mistake!

I found this to be an incredibly gripping novel from start to finish. Axelrood's character development was impressive, descriptive and fixating; particularly between the the "Advocate", Darcy Cole, and the "Doe" boys. Their dialogue through out the book will leave the reader anxious to find out what they'll do next, with fabulous "one-liners" that could only have come from Axelrood's personal experiences.

The book reads quickly, flows well and has twists and turns that compel the next chapter. Anyone that has lived in or visited Chicago will appreciate the scenes, landmarks and other "local elements" that Axelrood incorporates in the storyline. The finish is fabulous, unpredictable and left this reader hanging for more.

This one goes on my holiday gift list!

The Advocate - Run, Do Not Walk To Buy This Book!
If you are expecting the typical Grisham or Turow style legal thriller you in for a pleasant surprise! This is quite simply a great book.

As an attorney I have met every single one of Larry Axelrood's characters at one time or another in my career. They are written as three dimensional and quite human. Axelrood does an especially good job at portraying his gay character Patrick as a real person who happens to be gay. He does not stereotype Patrick or make him a victim. This is a refreshing change from the typical gay character who is written as either a monster or a wimp.

The book is fast paced and does not inundate you with overly descriptive narratives. Axelrood gives you a glimpse of the Chicago legal community and how it works without boring the reader or losing him in overly technical lingo.

The ending is a real surprise and from someone who prides himself on always being able to call the plot two chapters into a book I was thrilled to be caught unawares.

This is a great book to read on a plane because you will become so engrossed in the adventures of Darcy Cole you will have landed before you know it.

Bravo to Larry Axelrood and as I said earlier, Run ... do not walk to buy this book!

This is a page-turner full of history, romance and politics
Larry Jay Martin has written a terrific thriller which incorporates not only American history, but also current political and social issues surrounding Indian gambling. From page one, the reader escapes into the lives of four individuals trying to uncover one of the most exciting archeological finds of the century. One is instantly involved in an adventurous, meaningful quest towards discovery that takes the reader all over the country. From Wall Street dealings in the Big Apple to bar brawls in Montana, Martin weaves a mysterious and intricate story of love, heritage and money. This book is an interesting combination of fast-paced storytelling and historical relevance. Although I would categorize it as a light thriller, Sounding Drum also enlightens readers about both sides of the Indian Gambling issue in this country. I am MBA student with tons of work, but once I picked this book up, I couldn't put it down! Take it on vacation, bring it on a business trip -- you won't be disappointed.

Martin takes Manhattan with this unique thriller

Construction is a way of life in Manhattan, which makes the discovery even more startling. A Native American burial site has been uncovered amidst the excavation. Anthropologist Dr. Paula Fox extracts a delicate document that clearly describes a land deal between a tribe and a colonial governor. Paula takes the deed to Native American attorney Steve Drum, an individual who left his Montana reservation for Wall St.

Steve investigates the paper, which if valid, means that the Canarsu Indians own a piece of the rock. As he continues his inquires, an unknown assailant blackmails him for his affair with the daughter of the local Don. Though his life is in danger, Steve pursues what he believes is in the best interest of his people, claiming their heritage and building a massive casino in the middle of the big Apple.

SOUNDING DRUM (Steve's Native American name) is a fast-paced tale centered on an engaging supposition. Fans will find all the characters appealing, but especially will take pride in Steve's courage to insure justice happens even when the odds seem overwhelming. Bang the drums for Larry Martin who soundly demonstrates he provides his audience with a one sitting, entertaining novel.

Harriet Klausner

Western culture is everywhere!
What happens when Native American history finds its way to the Big Apple? Chaos. While working on a steam line under a Manhattan building, a construction worker, who just happens to be an Oneida Nation chief, discovers a cave containing undisturbed Indian artifacts. Rather than informing his boss, he calls a NYU professor, Paula Fox, also of Native American descent, and informs her of the discovery. Searching the cave, Fox finds a roll of parchment that she believes to be a very important historical document. But knowing that such documents are often kept secret to avoid a cultural uprising, she removes the document from the site and delivers it to fellow Native, Stephen Drum, AKA Sounding Drum, a former New York attorney, raised on the Salish Indian reservation in Montana, and now a consultant for the Indian casino business. Drum sets out to prove the document's authenticity, dreaming that financially for his fellow Native Americans, this possible land treaty could be like "the return of the buffalo." The author does a superb job demonstrating the spiritual power behind Native culture and how it mixes with modern, big city society. Sounding Drum is a fascinating tale that will keep the reader turning pages and wondering where the story will go next. Copyright ©1999, ReadWest.com. All rights reserved

A must for northwoods hunters
This book is one of the best true hunting books I ever read! The Benoits are the True first family in deer hunting and as a north woods hunter myself I have learned lots from reading this book. This book is not about sitting in a tree stand all day or electronic trail timers or other high tech deer hunting ambush aids its about true hunting...tracking the most wise buck in the world..the northwoods buck !

A must read for serious big buck hunters
It is one thing to shoot a trophy buck. It's even more amazing to shoot them year after year. This is just what the Benoits do and keep in mind it is being done in Maine. This makes it an even bigger accomplishment. If you have hunted Maine like myself, you know what I'm talking about. The big bucks up there are far and few, yet the Benoits are able to "read" the area and thus find moss backs every year. Even if you are an experienced hunter, you can be humbled quite quickly when hunting in Maine. This book details hunts in which bucks were tracked for many miles, offers many tips on how to read tracks, and when and where the bucks are going. If you want to learn more about big woods bucks, this book is for you.

How can a bridge player NOT read this book?
I don't understand how anyone could intelligently win a matchpoint game without understanding the LAW. This isn't just a way of improving your competitive bidding; the LAW is the whole theory underlying this area of bridge.

The author's presentation of the concepts is illustrated with numerous examples and exercises to allow the reader to quickly absorb the ideas. My advice to my partners: know this book inside out. My request of my opponents: pay no attention!

How can you do better?
If your bridge library were extremely small, one MUST item would be The Law of Total Tricks. It's a gem, one that will change the way you think at bridge and one that will help you make those tough part-score and higher competitive decisions which are ordinarily such "guess work". This book will help you evaluate your bidding options with much greater assurance and accuracy.

Winning Bridge Decisions
This is an essential book for any serious player. The only concern is that the intermediate player may come to believe that this is a substitute for judgement. Still this should improve the competitive bidding decisions for any player who is somehow not familiar with "The Law".

Those interested in a somewhat different valuation style should look into losing trick count originally popularized in Britain which has been around for some time.
