A Convergence of Forces
By Honor Betray'd is the third novel written in the original Mageworlds trilogy. At this time, however, it is the sixth of the series in internal chronological sequence, following Starpilot's Grave. In the previous book, the Magelords have taken Galcen, the marines have joined Jos Metada, Commodore Jervas Gil has pulled together the Mageworlds fleet at Ophel, Ari Rosselin-Metada has fled Admiral Vallant to Gyffer, Llannat Hyfid has brought her motley crew and the deathwing Night's-Beautiful-Daughter to Gyffer, and Beka Rosselin-Metada has declared herself as the new Domina of Lost Entibor and the focal point of the resistance. Moreover, Owen Rosselin-Metada has found Errec Ransome imprisoned by the Mages, has proven his mastery, and has to been told to retrieve his staff and claim the Guild Mastership.

In this novel, Grand Admiral Theio syn-Ricte sus-Airaalin tries to break Errec's defenses, but fails. At Gyffer, Ari and Llannat join with local defense forces against Admiral Vallant and the Mages. Within Infabede sector, Jos captures warships from Vallant and decides to attack Galcen. At Suivi Point, Beka incorporates the local RSF squadron into the resistance fleet, Tarveet of Pleyver takes out a treason contract against her, and Ignaceu LeSoit breaks several regulations, and the docks, getting Warhammer away from Contract Security. On Nammerin, Owen and his apprentice, Klea Santreny, take ship to Pleyver to fight Mages. At Waycross on Innish-Kyl, Commodore Gil negotiates with former privateers to form a fleet around his three capital ships.

The Grand Admiral knows that he has a little cleaning up to do, but believes that the war is almost won. However, the resistance is gathering. All these forces, Republic and Mage, are converging on Gyffer. Should be a slam-bang fight.

This concluding volume of the original trilogy certainly brought everything to a boil, but the final plot twist is a humdinger. Recommended for Mageworlds fans and anyone who enjoys stories of interstellar war and intrigue.

Brilliant Conclusion
The grand finale; still more surprising twists, and I love the ending (which I won't spoil for you, but trust me, it'll make you go, "I saw that coming," and "Wha??" at the same time;) Also, you get to see a more vulnerable side to Owen for a change, which makes him seem more human, more understandable. In the end, I couldn't help but love most of the characters, including the villains!

Cant wait for the next book.
Love the people and the action. Want more of the same.

The complete idiot's guide to investing like a pro

Mind-boggling Return on Investment!
Read Investing Like a pro before you make any Investment decisions. It is from the idiots guide series; don't let the name detour you. The information is priceless, from Roth IRAs to Hedging funds. "The book is good." After you are done reviewing, then decide if a FC is worth it!

Simple Explanations of Effective Investments
Koch and DeSalvo have complied a comprehensive investment guide for the average person. Even those with financial experience who need information in a concise and user-friendly manner will benefit from owning this book. I am not ashamed to own "Idiot's" guides, simply because I have my own area of specialty, and do not have the time or will to specialize in every area in which I have a passing need or interest. This is where this book comes in, because most people don't have time to get a degree in finance or an investment license just to make their money grow.

This book covers the basics like investment risk tolerance, investment needs, and then covers ways to make more money available to invest. The authors point out that saving money is a form of tax-free investment. Then the authors discuss stocks, mutual funds, home ownership, saving for college, and reducing taxes. Finally they explore more risky investments like options and futures, as well as providing tips for online investing. The book has a few glossy pages, numerous charts and tables, and a glossary.

Overall, I recommend this book wholeheartedly. I knew nothing about investing until recently, and after I got my Series 7 license, I realized that this book had provided me with a strong background with which to begin studying. Honestly, after working with many financial planners, I think this book is probably more useful than many financial planners out there. While it won't make you an expert, it will provide the basic essential information the average beginning investor needs. Read this, and then move on to more advanced books, but all the while, start investing and making money.

D youself a favor, buy this book
I work in finace but really had no inderstanding of investments until i read this book. I found it very easy to follow and able to comprehend. Someone with a little finacial background probably would have been able to grasp it even better. Before you buy a single stock, bond, or mutual fund i highly recomend this book. I must say on the negative side that to truly understand finace you will need further reading, but this is a mandatory first book, and if all that is desired is a basic understanding of finace you could use this as your guide. I reccomend further reading though, for anyone working in finace or who plans on doing alot of investing.

The photographic art of Margaret Bourke-White
I am quite sure it was the film "Gandhi" that had me thinking Margaret Bourke-White (1904-1971) was essentially a portrait photographer, but this impressive collection of her life's work amply proves otherwise. Bourke-White was originally an industrial photographer, who was hired by Henry Robinson Luce to do assignments for his new magazine "Fortune," for which she did extensive photographic essays on everything from meat packing plants in Chicago and glass blowers in upstate New York to workers in Indiana quarries and the steel industry in Germany's Ruhr valley.

On her first trip to Russia in 1930 she photographed not only the industrial expansion of the Soviet Union but the lifestyle of the people and it is from this point in her career that she made the clear shift to being a photo journalist. During the Great Depression she documented the plight of migrant farm workers and sharecroppers. When Luce launched "Life" in 1936 Bourke-White formed the magazine's original photographic staff (along with Alfred Eisenstaedt, Peter Stackpole, and Thomas McAvoy) and her photo of the construction of Fort Peck Dam in Montana was the cover and lead article in the first issue. During World War II Bourke-White covered everything from the German attack on Moscow to Patton's push into Germany to the horrors of Buchenwald.

Bourke-White's work represents the height of the era in which photography was a recognized art form, by which I mean a time when photographs were hung on walls in the same manner as paintings. Her work, like the best of that period by her contemporaries, has a poster-like design. It is fascinating to read how her use of multiple flashbulbs helped her create a more realistic effect. "Margaret Bourke-White, Photographer" lays out her career in clear stages, telling us not only about what she was doing but the hows and whys as well. Whether you consider yourself an aspiring photographic artist or are simply an interested neophyte such as myself, you will have a greater appreciation for both the artist and her art after devouring this book, which contains 160 pages of superb reproductions of her best and most famous monochrome images (some of which are from her personal archives).

Excellent
I did not buy this book because MBW was an inspirational female or other, but because her photos are simply superb. They capture a feeling, a time and space with a clarity that is both sparse and yet detailed. This is a book to savour and reflect on.

Her sense of design and form was and still is incredible!
This book illustrates why Margaret Bourke-White should be recognized as one of the 20th century's top photographers. Her ability to capture a moment during war and destruction or an enternity in marble and stone, is awe inspiring. She was not limited by her feminity. She moved easily into the world of machines and factories, capturing molten metal and shiny blades. Again and again, I return to the book and study all aspects of her photographs. The depth of field, the rhythm, the harmony and the life seen in all her photos takes my breath away. Within a few days of purchasing the book, I had the joy of visiting the National Art Gallery of Canada in Ottawa where there are two Margaret Bourke-White photos in their collection. The soft creamy paper used in these pictures counters the hard metal of the image itself. These are the third and fourth Margaret Bourke-White's I have had the pleasure to see in person. The other two was a copy of the original cover for LIFE magazine and a single rose bud. Both of these photos are owned by Margaret Bourke-White's sorority and are featured in their archival collection. The photographic reproductions in this book, although lacking the soft creams of the Art Gallery's copies, do capture the integrity of her photos. I will treasure this book.

make a plant person happy
I gave this book to my husband. He is a rangeland management major and he is in love with the book. I do not know anything about plants, but he seems to love it and find it extremely useful. Compare to the expensive "weeds of the west" this book is relatively cheap for the amount of plants it has.

North America Range Plants
As a Range Conservationist in WA State a great book for all range mgrs, range techs., however, I was surprised to see Thurber needlegrass taken out of the most recent issue.

Great Field Guide
North American Range Plants is a great book for any beginer, taxonomy student, layman, and expert alike. It is easy for the novice, because it's not in a key format, which may disappoint some more serious plant collectors. It contains 200 of the most common, and important plants found in the United States, Canada and Mexico. I have had this book for sometime now, and it has become an invaluable resource in my studies at Texas A&M University, where I have come to know one of the co-authors, Stephan Hatch. He has an unparralled knowledge of plants and a dedication like no other to put forth a good product, so i know from experience that this book was written by folks who are the top in their field of study. Being from Texas, i have worked internships in the plains of central North Dakota and the desert "outback" of eastern Oregon and have found the book to most useful, oftentimes referring to it before trying to "key out" a plant in a more technical publication. It just doesn't get any better than this.

EVERY PARENT SHOULD READ THIS BOOK
If you read only one book on parenting ever, this is without a doubt the book you should read. Let's face it, your kids will be fine if you do not pick the perfect baby-mobile for them (as is the sort of topic included in most parenting books). However, it is too often that we see children severely injured or even killed because parents, intelligent and educated parents, were not made aware of the often quite simple safeguards that must be in place for our children to stay healthy and safe. As the mother of two very busy boys, I have found it overwhelming to think of every possible danger my boys may encounter. The news reports of children choking to death on everyday foods or strangling themselves with household items jolts our attention. We make the simple adjustments to safegauard our children from those particular hazards. However, most parents do not have the time to think of every possible danger or the information needed to keep our kids safe from them. Debra Smiley Holtzman has done this for us and done it well. Ms. Holtzman has tackled a huge amount of information and made it all easy to read, easy to retain and easy to implement. This is the most important parenting book I have read and I have read many.

A guide to eliminate the "Panic" in parenthood.
Ms Holtzmans common sense approach to child saftey, offers a step by step check list on how to get it right.
She teaches the parent, how common sense organization can help prevent an everyday accident from becoming a tragedy.
Her suggestions on preventing dangerous situations for your children, make parenting safer and easier.

BabyLounge.com rates Panic-Proof Parent as a 5-pacifier book
Did you know that you should never give honey to a baby under the age of one year? Or that lead may be present in your drinking water? How about the fact that you should make sure your water heater thermostat should be set at 120 degrees Fahrenheit or lower? If any of these items comes as a surprise to you, then you need the "Panic-Proof Parent."

Chock full of information that will help you create a safe lifestyle for your family, this book is one you should not be without. I was amazed to read about how many every day dangers are lurking in my house, car, in the air, and even in the food I feed my family.

I have read other safety books, but no other book is so comprehensive and well organized. The chapters are broken into a logical format, starting with recommendations that expectant mothers should do to guard their fetus.

Drinking water, pesticides, babyproofing, preventing burns, and pool safety are just a few of the crucial chapters that you will pour over when you get your hands on this terrific book.

Every parent worries about their children (it comes with the blessing) and some things are out of a parents hands. However, there are many precautions that you can take if you're armed with the appropriate information. This book will help empower you to do what you can to help ensure a happy, healthy environment for you and your loved ones!

A must for all parents!

Well-written, precise, and practical
I just finished reading "The Small Business Owner's Guide to a Good Night's
Sleep," and have already recommended it to a couple small business owners I know. I
congratulate the author! It's well-written, precise, and practical.
Kim Lisi
Managing Editor
HOMEBusiness Journal

Great advice for small business owners/managers
I got more advice from this book's chapter on dealing with employees than I
have in the last three books I've read on employee relations, put together. I
especially appreciated the information on how to involve families of
employees to, in turn, motivate the employees even more.. . . and all while
keeping the families out of the way. I'm not sure I agree with Traverso that
a small business can survive and even thrive through a recession, but her
tips seem to make great sense, so I'm going to try them.

Worth the money.
This is one of the best books I've read in months on how to manage your
business prudently and efficiently. I bought it so that I would have it on my
shelf for when those frightening unexpected and negative times arise. . .and
we know they do in every business. . . so I was surprised to find myself
reading the book for about two hours without putting it down. I also took the
time to do the small business self-audit, and the author was right: I DO have
problems brewing in my organization that I wasn't even aware existed before I
read the book. Worth the money.

So Glad We Waited!: A Hand-Holding Guide for Over-35 Parents

Great resource
Whether considering becoming a parent at an advanced age, or already in the throes of parenthood, this is an invaluable resource. It covers all the topics that you need to hear about: working, not working, childcare, marriage quakes, sex, aging bodies and hormonal eruptions etc. Geared primarily to women, men should find some sections helpful. I've dogeared pages for my spouse to read.

Nachamie's opinionated--I held my breath while she ranted against relying totally upon a full-time nanny or sitter without establishing checks and balances that keep the child yours. While she spares no words here, her arguments were quite persuasive about keeping control.

I picked the book up to read about what to expect and am glad to have read it. Seems like parenting when your knees are giving out is a lot of work, but the joy expressed by the mothers she's interviewed is the most convincing argument of all.

Every parent over 35 should treasure this book!
Cannot rave enough about this book. The parenting advice is incredibly helpful, no matter how old you are. The writer is so perceptive about the joy, and possible mistakes we can make at our age. It's like having a really good friend, who is smart, funny, and very very wise. I loved reading other people's stories. We were lucky not to have gone through too much to have our daughter, but I felt so much for the others who did. This book has helped my husband and I (who also liked it) avoid a few of the problems, particularly spoiling, which we probably would have had, if we hadn't read this. I now give this book, and her other one, which I read after I read this, as a shower gift to every friend I have. Treat yourself to the best parenting book you'll find.

So glad we found this book!
We stumbled upon this book by serendipity -- ours was the last copy in a display as we walked by the "Parenting" section at our bookstore. We'd been dealing with the slowness of being selected by a birth mom, in an open adoption process, and we suspected it had to do in part with our being an "older" couple.

Nachamie deals with the big issues for "older" couples head-on yet with humor and perspective.

She examines the beliefs behind the social norms for the "correct" age of parents for young children. Nachamie also validates the sense we've had that for our age group, our mothers definitely are not the first resource we'd turn to in figuring out parenting challenges -- our age cohort feels this way (it's not just me and my mom!) and this is a contrast with younger moms and their mothers.

She identifies accurately the pitfalls older parents tend to fall into when parenting -- I see these frequently in my own clinical practice (as a child psychiatrist) and I can project how readily I could fall into a similar pattern unless I were forewarned and thus watchful. (Example: overindulgence of the highly-valued child, under the guise of "We're building his self-esteem by having him make the decision. . ." so the child doesn't experience appropriate limits. We've all experienced this at restaurants or stores.) And she makes specific creative suggestions for how to address the downside and celebrate the upside of being older parents. The parenting advice is very very sound.

This is not just for those with a Sensitive Heart.
Healing the Sensitive Heart: How to stop getting hurt, build your inner strength, and find the love you deserve by Debra Mandel, Ph.D.

I thought I would be the worst candidate to get something out of reading this book. I am not one of the sensitive hearted people that Dr. Mandel is referring to, but there are many such people in my life. I may be a magnet for sensitive hearted people. I learned from reading this book that I can help my sensitive hearted friends.

I have friends and relatives whose sensitive hearts have kept them trapped in a fantasy world. They sell themselves short because they have been "taught" that their own feelings do not matter-they exist to serve the will of their parents or some other childhood character. Dr. Mandel shows a path that sensitive-hearted people can follow to become Thrivers. Thrivers enjoy life and give back to the world more than they take. Thrivers have a balance between serving their own needs and responding to the legitimate needs of others.

I recommend this book for the happy soul mates and friends of sensitive hearted people. We can benefit when we understand the likely genesis and resolution of behaviors that are so odd to those of us without sensitive hearts. Thank you Dr. Debra.

Excellent Book!
As a therapist myself, I am on the look-out for books that would be helpful to my clients. "Healing the Sensitive Heart" is an outstanding resource! Written with clarity, compassion, deep respect for people, and belief in their capacity to change and grow, it resonates with authenticity. It provides an excellent analysis of the inner life and behaviours of the "sensitive-hearted", and clear, effective strategies for restoring balance and achieving a healthy relationship with self and others.
I highly recommend this book!

Healing the Wounds that Bind Us
So many of us are damaged in childhood, many times carrying around unresolved baggage that keeps us stuck and unable to live our best lives. This delightful and insightful book helps us understand what has molded us into who we are, and then gives us the tools to move towards a more rewarding and fulfilling life. 'Healing the Sensitive Heart' compassionately takes us on a journey of a millions miles by encouraging us not to be afraid of taking the first step.

Safe By His Side
New Intrigue author Debra Webb continues the "Secret Identity" series while starting her own in "Safe By His Side." It's a good sign of things to come. The author pens convincing action sequences and keeps the romance steamy. The love scenes are hotter than usual for Intrigues and the sexual tension consistently high. Her villains are also appropriately chilling (One irritating point: With the language toned down for series romances, it's better if some curses are avoided altogether. It's obvious "crap" would not be the villains' swear word of choice and it just sounds strange.) Altogether, "Safe By His Side" is a solid tale full of danger and desire.

So why only four stars? If I was unable to muster more enthusiasm for the book, it was because there is little here we haven't seen before. The increasingly common secret agent hero. The amnesia, which seems particularly contrived coming when it does here. (So far, the "Secret Identity" series seems to be nothing more than a continuation of the "A Memory Away" promotion under a different title.) The heroes are on the run in the type of story Gayle Wilson and Rebecca York have told better. The comparison isn't a fair one to make with a new author, but it does go to show Webb is in good company. As solid as it was...well, that is what it was. Not unique or inspired in any way. A solid reuse of familiar elements in a story that comes across like one we've seen before. Webb has done an admirable job absorbing the hooks the editors love, but she doesn't do much to make them seem fresh and new this time around.

I also never really warmed up to the heroine. For much of the first half, Kate is very childish. A grown woman who stomps her feet, sticks her tongue out and never stops complaining doesn't earn high points for maturity with me. The ending also falls a bit flat. Part of the plot involves Raine finding out who inside the government blew his cover. We're given two suspects (savvy readers can likely guess who it is early on), but we're never introduced to either character, never get a chance to meet either of them over the course of the book, so we have nothing invested in either of them turning out to be the traitor. In the end we find out which one it was but it could have gone the other way and it wouldn't have made any difference in terms of impact.

Despite those quibbles, "Safe By His Side" is a well-told tale sure to be enjoyed by those who haven't had their fill of stories like this and perhaps some who have. Webb is an author to look for. A more original tale will likely make better use of her talent.

A great new author to love!
Wow! I just finished reading Safe by His Side, and can hardly wait for the next Colby Agency book from Harlequin Intrigue by Ms. Webb. I don't have as much time to read as I used to enjoy, so a book has to really grab me from the start--this one definitely did! I loved the tougher than tough hero who has to rediscover his humanity along the way to finding out who inside his government organization betrayed him to the mob. The heroine rises to the challenge of this larger-than-life hero. The pacing is fast, and the romance sizzles. It may be a bit hotter than a lot of the Intrigues I read, but it really fit the hero and heroine and the content of the suspense plot. I want more!!

UTTERLY FABULOUS--ROMANTIC SUSPENSE AT ITS BEST!!
This book is definitely a keeper, one that I'll read over and over again! A real page-turner. The edge-of-your-seat action coupled with the sizzling relationship between the hero and heroine makes this book a must-read. Though a newcomer to romantic suspense, clearly this talented author has a special gift for building an enigmatic plot and equally enigmatic characters. (Particularly her heroes.;-) Can't wait for the next Colby book!
