As a spiritual director I am constantly meeting people who want to establish a rule of life. Often they may not realize that is what they desire but upon reflection they uncover a desire to establish some spiritual habits that will help them pay attention to the holy. Debra Farrington's book is a wonderful resource for this. Her historical research lays the foundation and is very helpful but what I really like is the way she helps a person reflect on their life and begin to take steps in the eight areas she suggests for engaging their own rule of life. I recommend this book for all spiritual adventurers but especially for those who are seriously seeking to grow in their spiritual lives by attending to their life as a "rule" for maturing spiritually.

After searching the net and bookstores alike for accounts of what others go thru while on anti-depressant medication, this book has been a Godsend. With personal accounts of how others encounter and perceive depression, and it's alleviation through Prozac and other SSRI's, the book seems to illustrate that the various maladies of the disease are uniform. The book will remain in my library as a reference AND inspirational source. I look forward to Elfenbein's LIVING WITH LITHIUM, which is said to be next in the series.

I ordered this book for a friend who has anything but a peaceful life right now. I hoped that it would be something she could pick up and be encouraged by every now and then. The book arrived, and I'm really glad I bought it. It has a beautiful soft hardback cover and excellent illustrations. Each chapter discusses part of Psalm 23, and really part of the Gospel message, in a refreshing way. Chapters include: The Shepherd We Need, The Perfect Shepherd, The Shepherd of the Second Chance, The Shepherd of the Dying, The Shepherd of Plenty, and The Shepherd of Heaven. The book is comforting because it shows God as a loving and caring shepherd. It is encouraging because it keeps life and death in the perspective of heaven. It would make a great gift for a non-Christian or a struggling Christian.

This is the first book by DLB that I've read and I will definitely look for more! Iain and Alena were a great couple, very much in love with each other. They had a deep respect and understanding of one another, not always achieved in novels. And not often felt by the reader, as was the case here.
The plot was very interesting, and blended well with the main characters.
George was a very intriging character.
This is a very memorable story, one that I count as an all-time favorite. The only drawback was how often the author made the hero Iain cry! I like sensitive men as much as anyone, but I was a little turned-off by how often this occurred.

Despite the fact that Dr. Lenora Fulani was the 1st woman and the 1st African-American to get on the ballot in all 50 states when she ran for President as an independent in 1988, many people still have not heard of her. This book is about Dr. Fulani's growing up, her adult life, and her experience of running for president as an independent (the second time, in 1992). It is engaging and interesting. There are a lot of pictures of Dr. Fulani from the campaign and from her childhood. I liked reading about her life and about things that happened during the campaign that were positive and moving. There were nasty and hateful things that happened, as well. It's a real education into what goes on in a campaign if you are not one of the "big boys" (for example, Dr. Fulani was excluded from debates and was not given equal time on radio and T.V.). I think it is very positive and hopeful for our country that Dr. Fulani has received support from people of all colors, gend! ers, economic levels, ages, etc., all across the country. There are many narratives about encounters she has with "regular" people all over the United States. I highly recommend this book if you are at all interested in a human and humane perspective on politics in America.

Manual of Canine and Feline Behavior, Bsava
Published in Paperback by British Small Animal Veterinary (2002)
Amazon base price: $109.99

This book is a bit pricey but well worth it. It begins with overviews of normal cat behaviour and development, from birth onwards, and then moves to discussions of the causes of and how to handle behavioral problems (such as fear!). It is written for the veterinary professional but is not too difficult for the layman to understand. The chapters are each written by an international authority on that particular subject (such as Dr. Crowell-Davis of UGA who writes on "Social Organization, Communication, and Development in Cats"). I can't speak from the point of view of a dog enthusiast, but cat owners and breeders will find this volume both interesting and useful.
