Teaching Children About Physical Science: Ideas and Activities Every Teacher and Parent Can Use

Easy, Inexpensive, fun science for kids and adults.
This book, along with its companion volumn, Teaching Children about Life and Earth Sciences, is a must have for anyone interested in doing hands-on science with kids. The experiments are easy, inexpensive, and don't require a Ph.D in rocket science. Both books are well organized, and have background information and suggested additional resources for further investigation. I have used both books in my own teachng, writing, and with my own children. For great science, you don't need to look any further.

Superb for both children and adults!...Dr. Kain
Elaine Levenson takes teaching of elementary science to a new level. She is a kindergarten teacher who developed experiments and concepts from her own young classroom. Yet I know very few adults who could explain scientific phenomenon as well as Elaine. Each chapter contains a background which clearly explains the science behind the experiments. The experiments themselves are simple and require few materials. Elaine's approach of inquiry includes many questions to ask children during the experiments. In effect, the children learn by themselves. It's an outstanding approach since the science is neither "magic" nor are the explanations too advanced for young children...from The Science Spiders(TM) Newsletter.END

Great book on educational technology
I am a Technology/Resource teacher in an elementary school. This book was one recommended at a professional development workshop I attended. It is excellent. I found it easy to read and full of useful information.

Moving from tech to classroom
"Technology for Teaching" helps the educator interested in overcoming the techie challenge and moves to allow for effective, robust integration and infusion of technology into classroom learning. A more descriptive title might be "Using Technology for Enhanced Learning." That's just what Norton and Sprague have accomplished with wisdom and practicality in this book

Both authors are early innovators and contributors in helping teachers use basic hardware and software (where too much professional development end) to enhanced learning opportunities for all ages that supports both teaching and learning.

"Technology for Teaching" does and excellent job in reviewing the features and functions of 13 technology tools (skills software, computer graphics, word processors, desktop publishing, Web-based editors, databases, telecommunications, simulations, multi/hypermedia, mathematical devices, and artificial intelligence) used in the classroom. The authors follow up by examining how technology tools support student learning and good instructional practices that move technology fulfilling the promise integrating technology into the learning process holds.

Many technological innovations have come and gone in the history of education. Few have stayed the course or significantly contributed to improved learning, understanding, and improvement of student learning. The technologies discussed in this book run the risk of following the same path if not thoughtfully and fully used. This book outline a framework that just might allow us to see new educational problems that can be solved by integrating these technologies into teaching practice.

I recommend "Teaching With Technology" by Pricilla Norton and Karin M. Wilburg as recommended companion volume. Together, these books make a significant impact on the learning environment make these books required reading for all who champion the use of the new technologies to enhance learning and justify the time, effort, expense, and hope technology hold for our students.

Excellent prep guide, good even if you don¿t take the exam.
The TICSA Training Guide is one of the better certification exam preparation books that I have seen in a while.

The book is makes for an excellent reference, and it quite valuable, even if you don't plan to take the exam.

The book is well organized and written. Many exam prep guides are simply a cut and paste from the course preparation material and a lot of other publicly available information. I saw none of that in this book.

The exercises and practice exams give a good feel for the test.

Taken as a whole, TICSA Training Guide is an excellent work. If you are taking the TICSA test, it is worth every penny. If you are not taking the exam, it is a worthwhile introduction into information security and protection.

Not just another Security Exam book!
I have been working on several Security certifications including CompTIA, Cisco and Microsoft, now I have found a new player in the game and finding this training guide has open a whole new world to me.

Unaware of what TICSA certification entailed, before reading this book I went to the website and researched the subject matter as well as found exam objectives and practice exams. I then took that information and compared it to the training guide and found that the authors have taken the exam material one step beyond the exam for this book.

I also found much of the material, whether you want the certification or not, is helpful in everyday network administration. Also the material goes a long way in other exam like Security+ and I could have certainly used this when I took that beta exam.

There are plenty of exercises and practice questions in each chapter, tips throughout the books and warnings and field notes to help in your study. Finally there is a cd-rom with practice exam questions powered by the PrepLogic testing engine giving you a look at the exam before going live. Overall this seems to be a very useful reference manual.

Mister......December 2000
I read this book and I thought it was the neatest book. I would recomend this book for children up to 5th grade. If a child is willing to listen to the story they may want to make a dog like that. I would recomend this book to parents for them to read to their children! It is a GREAT book and I like it!

I am a children's librarian
and if I could choose one book to be my favorite- this one would be it. It is rather simple in plot but you will never forget Alex and his imagination and his love for Mister. You must see this book!!

As a teacher, parent, and grandparent, it's relevant.
When you realize how much went into this book, you are overwhelmed. The level of detail and specific suggestions makes it unique. It's like peeling an onion; each layer seems more true to what I know about kids as a 26 year teaching veteran. Those I've worried about the most are in this book along with those I've loved. Perhaps what I liked best was the way it made me think back--not only to the raising of my own sons but also to my childhood. I look for positive connections to tell me what life is all about, and I believe The Whole Parent has them. Debra Wesselmann has crafted a loving validation for us all along with a chance to be whole.

Deb Wesselmann's book is an invaluable resource for parents.
Deb Wesselmann's book is an invaluable resource for providing the essential tools to establish healthier parent-child relationships. The Whole Parent: How to Become a Terrific Parent Even If You Didn't Have One contains critical information for those people who experienced painful childhoods. The book is just as important to parents who would like to increase the emotional well being of their families. Ms. Wesselmann's approach takes the reader through a clearly mapped out journey which provides keys to unlocking emotional barriers built during childhood. Powerful and inspirational personal stories of people who are overcoming desperately difficult pasts are included in the initial and final chapters. In these times of increasingly complicated and varied family structures, The Whole Parent is an excellent guide for obtaining and maintaining sound, healthy family relationships.

Why don't more people know about this book?
Monroe's writing is amazing. Dreamlike and poetic. All of the stories are connected, twisting together with subtle brilliance. The mood of the landscape and people she writes about is somewhat somber, but her characters all seem to have a remaining hope to them. What they have in common is that they all hope for a better way of life, a better man, etc.

Her characters and depictions of small town life are dead on accurate (I grew up in Iowa, very close to the Wisconsin border). I read the book in one night. Couldn't put it down. If you get a chance, READ THIS BOOK! You won't be dissapointed.

Superb
Ms. Monroe brings so much depth to both her characters and setting, that it is nothing short of amazing. Once these tales bring you into their world, they will always remain with you. Whether it's a waitress or a little girl looking for a better life, one can easily relate to them, thanks to the superb writing.
