Great resource
I am a construction lawyer in the Washington, D.C. area and found Judge Goodman's book to be just the thing in giving me a primer on mediation approaches. It is organized extremely well, is easy to read, and gave me lots of help as I prepared for my first mediation. The format of questions and answers is perfect for this subject. The only thing I would like to see is a second volume for advanced mediation, since Judge Goodman has much to offer.

A MUST READ for anyone involved in any of the ADR processes.
Both of Allan Goodman's books, BASIC SKILLS FOR THE NEW MEDIATOR and BASIC SKILLS FOR THE NEW ARBITRATOR, deserve to be read and re-read by every ADR professional and every advisor to parties in dispute before he or she enters the session. As a practicing mediator, arbitrator and ADR trainer, I know I do, and it gives me the presence to relax and "enjoy" the session, because I know I will be giving the best process skills of ADR to the parties and their representatives.

Concise, readily assimilated answers to some of the most perplexing problems faced by ADR neutrals are presented at each stage of the mediation and arbitration process. I would further recommend the appropriate book be given to the disputing parties to assist them in knowledgeable decision-making and a successful resolution.

Just What I was Looking For!
As a new mediator, I was looking for a book that would describe mediation skills in clear, non-legal language. This book is it! The question-and-answer format is a very effective teaching tool that walks you through the mediation process. When I think of a question that I would want to ask, it seems that the author has anticipated it and there it is. Mr. Goodman is obviously someone with extensive experience, both as a trainer and a mediator. I am a retired teacher and I found particularly valuable the appendix "Everything You Never Wanted to Know About the Rules of Evidence." The author offers an interesting explanation for including this information - that a mediator should have a basic knowledge of the concepts of evidence because we all (not just lawyers) apply these principles in every day life. This appendix alone is worth the price of the book.

I also purchased the companion volume, Basic Skills for the New Arbitrator, so I could gain an understanding of arbitration and broaden my knowledge of the increasingly popular field of alternative dispute resolution. I found that book equally easy to understand and very valuable.

A solid Poe collection
Edgar Allan Poe is one of the undisputed giants of United States literature--indeed, of all world literature. And "Great Short Works of Edgar Allan Poe," edited by G.R. Thompson, is a solid sampling of some of Poe's most marvelous literary achievements. The editor's selection allows the reader to experience the many different facets of this genius: Poe as poet, as critic, as mystery writer, as science fiction pioneer, as satirist, and, of course, as seminal master of horror.

Of course, no selective presentation of Poe will please everybody. I'm sure that most Poe enthusiasts will bemoan the absence of a favorite piece from this collection. Personally, I missed "The Gold-Bug," one of the stories that most impacted me as a young reader many years ago. But Thompson has packed a diverse cross-section of great material into a fairly compact space. You'll find such essential triumphs as "the Raven," "The Masque of the Red Death," and "The Murders in the Rue Morgue."

This edition includes both a good bibliography and a chronology of Poe's life. "Great Short Works" is a good resource for both the general reader and for classroom use.

great stories
all of poe's stories have really made me wonder what kind of guy he was. all of his short stories, mostly included in the contents of this book. my favorite the tell tale heart. this guy cuts the book done when it should be cut and i wouldnt expect anything different from him.

BUY IT!

A great taste of Edgar Allen Poe's finest
I want to make this short and simple. If you want a good feeling for what Poe has to offer you should read this book.

Step-by-Step Method to Selling Services
After reading many other sales books and listening to numerous tapes, I finally found what I was looking for. A practical, step-by-step method for selling my professional services.

Allan Boress takes the mystery out of selling services, puts the tools in your hands, and guides you through the process. The author has interviewed hundreds of people and has used this method himself to create his successful practice.

If you've been trying to take ideas from "here and there" and trying to modify them to sell professional services, this book will save you tons of time, give you the tools and confidence to sell your services, and help you make money...now.

Don't Cheat Yourself
I DO hate sellling, and Allan Boress' book lived up to its promise. It's book on selling your services, not your products, for businesspeople who don't consider themselves salespeople. His approach to getting a sale is so logical, it is almost too easy. After I read the first chapter, I put the book down and secured four interviews with potential clients that I had been trying to reach for weeks. If you are an entrepeneur, you have more than enough to worry about. Buy yourself this book and let Boress turn one burden into ease.

A Great Help!
For years I struggled and failed to sell my services. After reading this book and implementing the ideas incorporated in the book, my sales skyrocketed. This is an unbelievable book for people who sell services, not products. If you sell services and don't buy this book, you will cheat yourself out of the money you should be making.

One book I don't hate to read over and over
I was surprised that this book had so few words in it - maybe that's what makes it so popular with my 3 year old and 20 month old! (Me, too!) The pictures are lively, Bert is built like a sausage with legs and red hair, and is as unthreatening and jolly a protagonist I've seen in children's books. The kids love having to say "Hallo" , then "Good night" to Bert and Mrs. Bert - and the beginning and end, when they are instructed to turn thepage very, very quietly, so as not to wake baby Bert - then find baby Bert yelling "Waaaaaa" on the next page - "Now look what you've done!" - hysterical every time. They start snorting and chuckling before I've even turned the page. This book is a surprise favorite. I'm very glad I bought it as I was disappointed at first it was so short - it's silly, happy, and delightful and I would advise anyone who has a 1 - 4 year old to buy it.

a fun adventure
A great first "chapter book". The book is interactive with places to say hello & goodnight to the characters. My son laughs out loud in several places. The artwork is really fun.

We love it!
My 4 year old son and I don't tire of this book.

It is light and funny. It is short enough to be a quick "bedtime" read. And my son is totally captivated by the 2 places where you have to "turn the page very quietly, or else you'll wake up the baby"...... He still gets a huge kick out of it, even though he is now almost 5 years old and we have read the book dozens of time.

You won't regret spending [price] for this prize!

Great book
A wonderful book and a finely documented living history. Refreshing account based on Mr. Clemens actual diary notations. I have read almost every book on Guadalcanal and this one is definitely different. It reflects lulls between events and actually provides new information. The history and events in his story builds some natural suspense and his work is highly accurate! Not many books are written in a manner that makes you actually feel like you were there. Particularly good is the detailed writing of periperhal events surrounding well know events and battles. This work fills in many blanks will add another dimension to existing knowledge bases of historians and those interested in early pacific war. Also, not just a WWII campaign story but an excellent example of what can be accomplished when the odds are against you!

WWII: The definitive Story of the British Solomon Islands
For people interested in the Pacific WWII. This is the only book that provides the complete story of Coastwatchers and how they helped win the war on Guadalcanal. Never before been told and written by a near-mythic Coastwatcher Martin Clemens A compelling true adventure story. Of particular interest to Marines who were there but didn't have the slightest idea of what was going on in the background. For First Marine Division Marines this is a MUST read. I was there with Martin Clemens.

Great firsthand account - feels like you were there!
Superb account of the early days of World War II in the Solomon Islands. No other book is as effective in taking the reader back to this uncertain period just prior to the turning point of the war. Mr. Clemons work is truly a unique perspective and anyone remotely interested in this campaign and period of history must remind themselves that Mr. Clemons was one of only a handful of people in a position to witness firsthand, the early events that unfolded into a military campaign of epic proportions. I am a VERY SELECTIVE READER and this is a classic piece of work. For those of you who have read every book on this campaign - this one fills in the gaps and truly personalizes it all. When I put the book down and relect on what I read, it feels like I was there - very nice. Contains some 'fresh' pictures too. It's based off of Mr. Clemons diary/notes he kept during his time on Guadalcanal. There's even a picture of his dairy/notepad in the beginning of the book!

Simple , but unbelievable
Maybe this review would be bigger than the story itself. a simple idea and an unbelievable story. the story of our evil deeds hauting us. it is scary , but true. the most amazing thing in this story is Edgar Poe himself; his greatest use of the language, his realistic description of anger. he made me laugh many times , though it this short story is not intended to do that, because of his clever use of the vocabulary. it is a must read book. Dont think of missing it.

It was the best story we have ever read
It was the best story we have ever read because it was very scary. The part which we liked best was the ending, when the eye was burning. We felt sorry about the cat when the man cut out its eye.We didn't like the man because he was mean like a drunk.

Feel it by your self
If you want to know what is terror to its finest point, read this story

The E-Learning Question and Answer Book: A Survival Guide for Trainers and Business Managers

a quick glance through various aspects of e-learning
This book is a quick glance through various aspects of e-learning. The coverage is not deep, but very broad. This book tells what is e-learning all about; provides specific case studies and interviews with e-learning leaders; presents economical analysis; shows how to apply e-learning to your business; and describes the IBM 4-tier learning model.

However, I do not agree with the author's assertion that "Learning is work, not entertainment". A good learning is always pleasurable and amusing.

This title is easy to read, you may wade through it once and then keep it as your personal e-learning FAQ reference book.

Great e-learning resource for novices and veterans
Al Henderson does an excellent job of demystifying e-learning by describing the many facets of corporate e-learning in a style that is both informative and enjoyable. This book will appeal to a wide audience, whether the reader is new to e-learning or has spent many years in the field. The book can be used a reference, an introduction, or a guide to the capabilities and possibilities that e-learning has to offer. The case studies are useful in linking concepts to practical application. Readers will enjoy the perspectives on the future of e-learning provided by industry thought leaders.

If your organization is considering e-learning, I would recommend reading this book and reviewing the concepts with your stakeholders to ensure your are pursuing e-learning for the right reasons, and are approaching it with realistic expectations.

Great practical guide to e-learning
Henderson's book on e-learning is one of the most straight-forward, honest looks at e-learning that I have seen in recent years. His Q&A format allows the reader to quickly jump to points of interest without spending time on topics that do not pertain. As a person who has had to deal with business training "gone wrong", Henderson's suggestions for a successful e-learning environment make a lot of sense. As other reviewers have pointed out, I believe that this book and the concepts it describes will translate over to academia readily. Universities and Junior colleges would greatly benefit from taking a step back and focusing on the basics. Schools that are currently attempting online classes could be improved if the took to heart the topics that Henderson describes. Since his experience at IBM has given him a first hand look at how online learning can be done right, companies and learning institutes would be wise to pay attention to what he has to say.

By focusing on technical details, real-life cost, and the practicality of using learning on the web, the reader is able to quickly get up to speed on all the issues that must be considered when online training is attempted.

The practical guide was very useful; it was so easy to find information quickly that I am recommending it to my company's training division.

Edgar A. Poe: Mournful and Never-Ending Remembrance
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (1991)
Author: Kenneth Silverman
Amazon base price: $27.50
Average review score:

Never-Ending and Evermore!
I love biographies and read a great many of them. Silverman's work on Poe is certainly my favorite bio of the American Romantic. Poe was my first and most important influence in life. I read him in middle school, and later in high school, I wrote my senior paper on his works. Since then, I have read every biography I could get my hands on. This one book is my keeper. Somehow, in his own personal way, Silverman was able to capture a side to Poe I had not really seen in earlier readings. It is subtitled a Mournful and Never-Ending Remembrance, and that is exactly what it is. Here Poe comes alive, in all his glories and disappointments. It's mournful, it's detailed, and it will certainly never leave your memory. Silverman actually breathes life into Poe, and for a moment, while you are reading, you feel as though you might look over and see Edgar A sitting next to you. That's kind of nice.

This is the best literary biography since James Atlas'
biography of Delmore Schwartz. Objective, magnificently researched, marvellously articulate, witty, urbane, insightful. Congratulations to you, Kenneth Silverman, for elevating the biographical bar for everyone.

Incredibly engrossing and informative
I loved this book. It was another instance of realizing that almost everything I knew about a topic (in this case, E.A.Poe) was inaccurate. Also, Silverman's book provided a number of insights into life in New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Richmond in the pre-Civil War 19th Century. I do wish, however, that the author had more directly addressed some lingering questions about Poe; specifically, the real nature of his marriage to Virginia and his peculiar relationship to her mother, and the cause of his bouts of derangement (was it really alcohol or some other mental/chemical condition?). This was a rich and deep book that was very difficult to put down, even though it's long.

The Big Everything
This book is part of the Collectors Press series that include "The Great American Paperback" and individual volumes on fantasy, horror and science fiction. Essentially, this is a collection of book covers, movie posters, and other visual representations of crime and mystery media from the 1800's to today. "The History of Mystery" is a visual treasure for anyone interested in the genre, and Max Allan Collins' text provides a nice overview of crime and mystery authors and publishing. The only drawback is the same as in all of the Collectors Press books in this series: in many cases the images slightly overlap, with one cutting off a portion of the other. It's not bad enough to ruin the pleasure of the book, but allowing each image to be seen without obstruction would have been a better choice. Highly recommended.

No Mystery About How Great This Book Is!
My wife was working as a buyer for a bookstore when she noticed this title in a catalog and knew it was something special I would instantly be drawn to. As a late Valentine, it was perfect, and I must say I am quite pleased with the almost museum-like quality and presentation of this book. From the first ever real American P.I. to modern films, quirky heroes, and comic books, Max Collins manages to cover every base of the detective mystery genre. The historical bits are not boring at all, but often amusing as is the fantastic selection of cover art from pulp magazines through trading cards and television promo art. A slightly tongue-in cheek tribute to a slightly tongue-in cheek style of writing by one of mystery's biggest fans and best contributers, well worth every penny!

A lavish display with its color reproductions of covers
Even more lavish is Max Allan Collins' History Of Mystery, which combines an appreciation for pulp detective fiction art covers to insights on the mystery writing genre's many visions; from its pulp fiction to comic books and fiction writings. Fans of either mystery writing or pulp fiction art will relish this lavish display with its color reproductions of covers.

There's no peace when your guest is a special baby
The simple line drawings are accessilble to all. the innkeeper certainly didn't know what he was in for when he let Mary and Joseph use the stable. Despite the bright light and all the interruptions the innkeeper finally gets in the spirit of things. A short, sweet look at the joy everyone had at the birth of a special baby.

My all-time favorite Christmas story
This charming story gives a realistic spin to how things really might have been out there in Bethlehem. It makes me laugh everytime I read it, and it makes a wonderful skit that our family loves to put on at Christmas time

I Love this Book
I love this book. I bought three, two to give away and one to keep. I have it sitting on the coffee table. People pick it up, think it's a cute kid's book and read through it. I can always tell when they get to the end...there is a little sigh and a look of peace! It reminds us of the true meaning of Christmas. That our lives are hectic, just as the inn keepers night was, but he took time to celebrate the baby's birth!
