A BOOK TO BE TREASURED BY ADULTS AND CHILDREN.
This is a wonderful anthology. Top-notch mystery writers and their children (and, in some cases, grandchildren) collaborated on a variety of entertaining stories.

Pay particular attention to "Releve", the story contributed by Patricia Wallace and her daughter. This story introduces us to Sydney Bryant, the private eye that Pat Wallace has featured in a terrific series for adults. The titles in the series include "Deadly Devotion" and "Blood Lies".

Other outstanding stories include those by Wendy Hornsby, Scott Turow, Stuart Kaminsky, and Sharyn McCrumb (and their collaborators). This is a book that parents can read and enjoy with their children. It might inspire them to collaborate on some mystery stories of their own!

I look forward to reading the companion volume, "Great Writers and Kids Write Spooky Stories". I

mini-lesson on mystery writing

"When you think of a mystery, what comes to mind? A dark secret? An unsolved crime? A curious detective hunting for clues?"

The only mystery, the only secret, the only crime is how this anthology could be so easily overlooked. "Great Writers and Kids Write Mystery Stories" (1996) is a collection of stories written by some of today's greatest mystery authors in collaboration with their children and grandchildren. Jonathan Kellerman, Sharyn McCrumb, and Scott Turow are three of the thirteen award-winning writers that create wonderous whodunits with their offspring, ages 6 to adult.

While written at about the junior high/ middle school level, this complilation is enjoyable to all. The stories are five to several pages. Some are written with the child as the amateur detective, some are written as a type of psychological thriller.

The introduction serves as a "mini-lesson" on mystery writing. And, each story features a short personal introduction by the adult and child writing team on what it was like to collaborate on their included story. Other contributors include Barbara D'Amato, Ed Gorman, Stuart Kaminsky, Elizabeth Engstrom, and many others.

This book has the unique ability to be educational as well as entertaining. Those that enjoy this book may also enjoy the first volume as well: "Great Writers and Kids Write Spooky Stories" (1995).

The Harley-Davidson and Indian Wars
Last winter I checked this book out from the local Library for my boyfriend who was very sick in the hospital. He and his friend loved it so much they asked if they could just buy it straight from the Library. I refused to do that and returned the book. Guess What? He will be getting this for Christmas! They like motorcycles and enjoyed this book. They give it a high rating!

Very good history of a great rivalry.
As someone who is interested with the people racing the machines I was a little disappointed with the book. While it gives a very good, concise history of the two brands and the men that ran the companies it really does not focus that much on the racers who played out the rivalry on the boards, dirt tracks and hills. The book also seems to focus on the Indian Company more than the Harley company. Naturally one finds themselves rooting for the underdog Indian to find them loosing out in the end. I definately recommend this book for people interested in the history of these companies.

Excellent reference
As a psychologist working with a young client who has heart disease, if found this to be an excellent reference. The sections on personality variables and clinical interventions have helped me to deepen my understanding of some of the variables underlying his psychological reaction to heart disease, as well as to plan effective interventions. The lay reader may find some of the information too dry and may well want to skip many of the chapters -- this is definitely a book written for professionals. But it is one which I think many lay people interested in the issues involved in cardiac psychology will find useful.

An important book on an important but neglected topic
Although this book is a collection of scholarly articles, it is an easy read. Its subject is the often neglected problem of the psychology of the cardiac event. I know, having had a heart attack, an ambulance ride to the emergency room, days in CCU, and corrective procedures, that the event and the aftermath are quite stressful. The patient often needs attention even beyond a cardiac rehab program. I also know that the psychologists and the cardiologists are not connecting as they should, partly from time constraints, but mostly from a kind of technical gulf between them. Whether you are a heart patient or a medical professional, you will profit from reading this book.

If you're looking for a good buche recipe, look no further!
This is a terrific cookbook! The recipes are easy to follow and the results are fabulous. The buche de noel recipe especially is the easiest, tastiest and the most impressive-looking one that I've found anywhere and has become a popular annual Christmas tradition with my family and friends; I end up baking around a half dozen of them every year for parties and get-togethers. This book is worth its weight in gold if you do alot of baking for the holidays (or any other day, for that matter)!

A Sure Thing!
I have tried many recipes in this cookbook and they were all a success! Definitely a must-have for your holiday baking. I must admit that I don't only use the book for the holidays. The chocolate almond cheesecake, lemon blueberry bundt cake and blueberry pecan coffee cake make great desserts for any occasion. The recipes are easy to read and most are fairly simple. Never disappointing!

How They Met

Insightful and thought-provoking
How They Met is an excellent book that cuts to the core of common (and uncommon) relationship issues. The depth of insight portrayed in the self-examinations of Bill reveals much about the author's own ability to introspect. And the warm understanding and solidity of Sue were a welcome delight. I do think that the character of Miriam was a realistic expose of a woman obsessed, although some of the more dramatic escapades later in the book bordered on fantasy and unbelievability. Still, they made for an exciting storyline and succeeded in getting the point across of how disruptive such behavior can be. The story gripped my attention and I turned each page, avidly wondering what would happen next. And although the book ended, not with a happily-ever-after ending, but with the realism of a life filled with ups and downs, challenges and successes, joys and sorrows, I also could feel the underlying victory of a contented life. It makes my heart sing. A must read for anyone who dreams of a conscious, growth-filled relationship with an equal.

"How They Met " is spellbinding and suspenseful
Allan Hunter is a gifted writer and How They Met is a riveting and suspenseful story. Therapist, Bill Staniforth is a man whose life is overturned by the very person he is trying to help. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see how Hunter could resolve the problems of Staniforth's collapsing life. Hunter brings us within his characters' psyches and explores their deepest inner lives. A compelling read - you'll never forget it's power.

Clear, scholarly, meaningful, and even devotional!
I couldn't get enough of this book. Powell is a wonderful writer, and he introduces us to the perspectives of Historical Jesus scholars of the last two centuries with absolute clarity and just the right details. I just had a lot of fun reading on the different scholarly views on who that ancient man of sorrows was. Powell seemingly has no axe to grind, seems completely competent to plough the terrain, and makes the whole trip worth it with the last two pages of the book....After this huge deluge of information about what Jesus did or did not say; after all of the guessing concerning Jesus message; after probing why Jesus has remained so controversial after 2000 years, Powell offers a tantalizing scenario concerning the very first Christian words ever penned on the last two pages (his only personal reflections in the book). I had to wipe the tears from my eyes after that.

This book is a 5 all the way. You won't be disappointed regardless of your view of who Jesus was (or is).

a clear explanation of a difficult and complex subject
Dr. Powell is head of the Historical Jesus section of the SBL. He not only is a New Testament scholar in his own right, he is also a respected colleague and friend of the Jesus Scholars he discusses. He not only has read their works, but he understands their positions from the inside.

In my experience, the study of the Historical Jesus is sometimes characterized by rhetoric, special pleading, and an unfruitful "us" vs. "them" attitude. While Powell is forthright about his own views when this is appropriate, he comes across as
surprisingly objective as he discusses the pros and cons of each position. This is aided by the fact that the Jesus scholars often disagree with each other - so he can just say "Wright would take issue with that", or "Crossan responds to this view
in this way."

Powell's writing style is refreshingly informal at times, and he obviously strives for clarity over the "scholar-speak" so often encountered. At the same time, he is obviously familiar with the technical concepts and not only throws the jargon around
but often explains it.

The book shows unusual restraint - Powell gives the reader room to formulate his/her own conclusions, while providing insight into both the issues and the scholars themselves.

I understand that this book is used in college courses as an introduction to the subject, and I can see why.

_Jesus As a Figure in History_ is a rare contribution: a clear explanation of a difficult and complex subject. I give it a 5.

It's running the country that counts, not the campaign
Lichtman provides, with the Keys to the White House forecasting system, a novel approach to the obscure academic exercise of predicting presidential elections. Ignoring the polls, working sometimes years in advance, it's possible to determine whether the party in the White House will hold or lose it in the coming election. Lichtman achieves this by developing his theory of governance into a set of thirteen "keys" or key factors that will determine the upcoming contest. From the ease of the governing party's primary campaign, to the pulse of the economy, to the foreign policy failures and successes, he applies an historian's eye to current events and lines up the keys. While the system is certainly open to debate, particularly on some of the more subjective keys, the more important point is what it tells us about how and why we choose our presidents. Some of the answers that the keys suggest are surprising. Certainly, the theory of governance diminishes the importance of the media blitz, the opinion poll, and the rough and tumble of everyday politics -- and some political junkies may not like that. But the message of performance is intriguing and should offer new insights to even the most jaded policy wonk.

The Keys to the White House--A Surefire Winner
Is it possible to have a system of predicting the election of a president, months or even years before Election Day? According to one political historian, yes, there is a way. In fact, it's a "guaranteed" prediction. Historian Allan J. Lichtman has devised a system of thirteen keys that predicts the outcome of elections. The Keys consider such things as the economy, social unrest, scandal, candidate charisma, etc. Since 1981, his forecasting system has never been wrong and, when applied retroactively, they correctly pick every presidential election since the Civil War. Lichtman's book, The Keys to the White House -- 1996 is an important historical/political work. Rather than an over reliance on economic theory, which basically says that if the economy is strong the incumbent wins reelection, Lichtman's keys are historically based, not based solely on the economy or on polls or campaign strategy. The turning of a key is based on historical precedent from past elections. Readers interested in presidential election theory will find Lichtman's book fascinating. According to the book, if the incumbent holds 8 of the 13 keys they will win, regardless of what polls or pundits say. In fact, Lichtman is basically saying that campaigns don't really matter, it's what happens before the campaign that counts. Readers looking for other works related to this topic should read Forecasting Elections by Michael Lewis Beck and Tom Rice or Forecasting Presidential Elections by Steven Rosenstone. The Keys is a must read for anyone interested in political history. Are you trying to predict who will win in 2000? - the Keys will tell you. Only time will tell whether The Keys to the White House is a surefire guide to predicting the next president, but so far, they have a perfect record.

Theatrical masterworks by Puig
"Kiss of the Spider Woman and Two Other Plays" brings together three theater pieces by the great Argentine writer Manuel Puig. Both the title play and "Mystery of the Rose Bouquet" have been translated into English by Allan Baker; "Under a Mantle of Stars" has been rendered into English by Ronald Christ. Together, these three plays demonstrate the imaginative power, psychological insight, and compassion of a major artist.

"Kiss of the Spider Woman" is probably the best known of the three plays; it has been adapted into both a major motion picture and an award winning musical play. Telling the story of imprisoned cellmates--one a flamboyant gay man, the other a passionate political revolutionary--"Kiss" explores such themes as sexual identity, suffering, and self respect. "Under a Mantle of Stars" is a surreal piece that examines crime, violence, lust, and twisted family ties. The final play in the collection, "Mystery of the Rose Bouquet," is a moving drama about a hospitalized elderly woman and her nurse. "Mystery" deals with such issues as loss, duplicity, memory, and, ultimately, hope.

In "Under a Mantle of Stars," one character remarks that another character "dares to say whatever comes into her mind." To which a third character replies, "Which is one form of madness." Perhaps, like all great writers, Puig shared this special, naked "madness." But whether madness or genius, his works are memorable and powerful. This is an essential volume for those interested in Latin American literature, gay studies, or 20th century drama.

Three exeptional plays by an extremely talented writer.
Most people who have read any Manuel Puig, are familiar with his Kiss of a Spiderwoman, which the film and the Tony winning musical are based on. Also included in this book are two other plays. Under a Mantel of Stars is an outrageous sexual farce. Mystery of the Rose Bouquet is the real treat of the bunch. The play is about two elderly women, a nurse and her patient. It shows what Puig did best- write women. His female characters are some of the strongest and most interesting that I have ever read. All of the plays have relatively small casts and should be relatively inexpensive to produce.

A Must For Log home Builders
There is not a book at the city library that I have left untouched that has anything to do with Log Home Construction. B. Allan Mackie's books caught my undivided attention, and put to rest any questions I may have had about building my own log home from scratch. 'Log House Plans' is an excellent resource to thumb through and find just the dream log home you want. Just as it's name indicates, it is not a book to teach you how to build, yet a book to help you find a plan you want to build. It' is full of plans that range from simple to extravagant, but mostly cost effective designs. There is even a full section that covers smaller efficient yet attractive designs for the family on a budget. I certainly found the design I wanted. A wonderful advantage of this book is the detail of all the designs. It contains no blue prints, but there is enough information in the design to aid an architect in drawing up accurate blueprint without the need of filling in the blanks. You may also order the blueprints through an address provided in the book. If you are considering building a log home, and you are looking for good ideas, this is by far the best resource on the market. If you want to build the home with you own hands, then do not pass up 'B. Allan Mackie's Building with Logs.' Definitely the best books on the market for Log Home Construction! Christopher Derbidge
