The Real Thing
After spending literally thousands of hours reading true crime books, I can say that this is the real thing. I was absolutely thrilled to see that it is available because I am going to make it required reading for the students in my Criminal Investigation classes! They may grumble at first about having another book to read, but when they start on "The Evidence Never Lies", they'll not want to put it down!

Terrific crime book
As the spouse of an award-winning crime reporter, we found "The Evidence Never Lies" to be a compelling, thought-provoking analysis of the incredible career of Herbert MacDonell. For those whose careers focus on crime, crime buffs, and seekers of great reading, this is a must-buy.

This is a MUST Read
I first found this book in 1992...and it changed my life. I am not kidding. Because of this book, I went on to studying serial killers, profiling and forensics...I was a paralegal major before that. The Evidence Never Lies is one of those treasures that should not be lost....never mind out of print!! I searched for it to see if there were a newer edition; I cannot believe it is out of print. Please Mr. MacDonell, write another like it. It is truly great

The Essential Litigation Handbook for Polygraph Evidence:
As an attorney with a longtime interest in polygraph, I was thrilled to find Dr. Matte's recent contribution to this field. As Mr. Kitchen notes in his foreword to Dr. Matte's masterful treatise, the primary obstacle to the wide spread use of polygraph evidence in litigation is the difficulty of laying a proper foundation for its admission. To the average attorney the intricacies of psychophysiological veracity (PV) examinations present a virtual minefield of obstacles to the effective presentation of a foundation for admitting polygraph evidence or the cross-examination of an opposing expert. In "Examination and Cross-Examination of Experts in Forensic Psychophysiology Using the Polygraph", Dr. Matte has given us a detailed map to enable even the most unschooled practitioner to confidently navigate a safe passage.

book review..examination and cross-examination of experts
I have been involved in polygraphy since 1976, I have attended many annual seminars from different Polygraph Associations.I have testified in many criminal and civil cases involving polygraphy. Never have I read such a useful book to prepare me for the most robust of cross-examinations from the best attorneys. If you are a dedicated polygraph examiner, take the profession seriously and do not want to get caught off-guard,this book is a MUST. Take my word, this volume will supply you with the correct answers to give attorneys and judges which will enhance your professionnalism on the stand. I highly recommend it.Great for attorneys involved in polygraph cases. This book is a jewel.

A Lawyer's Handbook on Court Admissibility of Polygraph Test
This hardbound 450-page book is an excellent companion to the encyclopedic bible on polygraph examinations entitled "Forensic Psychophysiology Using The Polygraph." Lawyers will find this book an absolute necessity to lay down the foundation for the admissibility of polygraph examinations in a court of law. Lawyers and the polygraph experts they depose are provided model scripts based on authoritative sources and research data that address the most difficult situations. The cross-examination of polygraph experts is set forth in great detail and is especially useful to both lawyers and experts alike. This comprehensive 12-chapter book contains a 26-page Glossary of Terms, 51 Figures, 6 Appendices, 4-page alphabetical list of Legal Citations and a 55-page Index.

An Excellent book
This book is used as one of the Text books for I course on U. S. Military history that I am taking at collage and unlike most text books is an interesting and enjoyable read. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Military history, I would read it even if I didn't have to for class.

One of the best history books I ever had
I took Maslowski's history class about the U.S. military after 1917 at the University of Nebraska in 2001. "For the Common Defense" was one of the required readings for his class. If you have the chance to take his class, do it, it's informative and entertaining. When most history books just look at the battle statistics and "who did what," Maslowski and Millet's book goes further to illustrate the influence that politicians had on the military establishment. Most students sell their books back to the bookstore when they are done with the class--I decided to keep mine.

Invaluable resource for funk musicians
At last I can really see how the James Brown rhythm section material is put together. This is a really inspiring book and CD set. I've given it as a gift to many musician friends, as well.

An excellent teaching tool for ensemble playing
This is a very complete guide to the workings of one of the great R&B rhythm sections. The book is composed of 23 lessons examining the rhythm grooves for a selection of James Brown hits. Two CDs accompany the book. The lessons are arranged in chronological order by the date the songs were cut. Each lesson has printed material including an ensemble chart and individual charts for drums, bass, and guitar. Both staff and tab are given for guitar and bass. Historical and musical comments accompany each lesson. The CDs include four tracks per lesson: an ensemble track and the three individual instruments played at a slower speed. The mix is very clear and it is easy to distinguish the individual instruments in the ensemble track. While clearly intended as teaching tools, the tracks do have a feel that keeps the music compelling.

In terms of the level of difficulty, someone who didn't know this music might glance at the charts and conclude that the bass parts were (mostly) elementary, the guitar parts only slightly more difficult, while the drum parts combine fairly standard hand technique with advanced kick drum playing. Of course, this is misleading. It takes great timing to combine these parts in a way that has soul, and that's the great value of these lessons. A bass player (guitarist, drummer) trying to play this music has to really understand how he or she fits in with the other members of the ensemble. This is a very successful attempt to spell that out for the player.

One quibble: the organization of the historical material helps support the lessons, but makes it difficult to read as a straight narrative. One request: how about volume two with keyboard and horn charts?

Fabulous!
This is a great book for any musician, beginner or advanced. It gives Guitar and Bass notation as well as tab, and also drum music. The included CDs make it easier to catch on to the rhythm and learn all the parts. I play bass, guitar, and drums and this books has taught me many useful things in the funk and other areas. Great for anybody!

It Was Interesting
I will make my review short and to the point. This particular book was unbeleivable (considering I read it back in 1998). It kept me wondering whether these stories were real. Allan Zullo, I must say, is magnificent in collecting all these stories to give "us" readers to enjoy.

A great scarry book
This was a great scarry book that had me wondering if this could be true. It says it is and I belive that it really is. This book is what you are looking for if you want a scarry book. I don't like to read but this book I couldn't stop it is so good. Read it for your self, it's worth it!

REALLY CREEPY
I love scary stories, and so I love this book. It is pretty creepy, and some of them are kinda sad. I love Mr. Zullo`s books. Hey, I allways lay in my bed at night, and it was enough to make me kinda freaked to get up,and I don`t scare easily. If you read and like this book, check out some of his others: UFO KIDS, HAUNTED SCHOOLS, AND SPOOKY KIDS

Best Info. for Taking Action
This book is the best, most informative book I've read on my newly discovered condition (and believe me I have read a lot). It gives very practical information especially with regard to diet. It was a little bit lacking in the last chapter "Putting Your Own Healing Program Together," as well as the parts about exercise and meditation. But for diet alone, this book is well worth it and you'll know what to do on your own as well as with the help of a practitioner.

Excellent & balanced resource
This is a really great guide to dealing with fibroids and it gives you a wide variety of options in dealing with this condition. I agree that it is very balanced between scientific and holistic methods of healing. However, I do think you need to read this book AND then go to a healing practitioner (MD, nurse practioner or alternative practitioner) who has experience in dealing holistically with fibroids to guide you in what is best for you. But this book is a wonderful educational resource and guide and I highly recommend it!

AUTHENTIC HOLISTIC HEALING
I'm thrilled that a conventionally trained MD-gynecologist is as knowledgeable about alternative medical approaches as Dr. Warshowsky is, and that he has made his knowledge available to the public. When a family member was diagnosed with endometrial cancer some years ago, I discovered how overwhelming the world of alternative medicine is, and how hard it is to find physicians who are adept at combining their conventional training with the vast array of alternative approaches that are out there. I wish there were more physicians like Dr. Warshowsky who can help patients navigate through the maze of conventional and alternative treatments and map out a clear and helpful holistic program. I love how he addresses emotional and spiritual issues (not just physical) and how he doesn't see a woman's uterus as some kind of disconnected organ acting of its own volition. but rather as a symptom of a broader imbalance that must be addressed holistically. But he is also totally scientific and not "touchy-feely," which is an unusual balance. I hope he will go on to write a series of books about women's health issues. He has contributed a chapter to another book about cervical disease and the HPV virus (WOMEN AT RISK) and that's a great book too.

Exciting Read
HOUSE AT WAR by Allan Dorfman

Historical Fiction

Xlibris Corp., Philadelphia 492 Pages, Softcover. ISBN No. 0-7388-2201-9

Book Review by Simon (Ski) Hasinsky, SGT., USMC (Ret.)

A House at War is an exciting and absorbing read. It's a thriller with a unique plot and sub-plots that depict the exploits of Commander Mark Kurtan, an intrepid naval officer, and four generations of his family. some of the characters in the story include President Roosevelt , Adolph Hitler, Winston Churchill; Admirals Nimitz, Yamamoto, and Pound, as well as other important and world famous political and military leaders of the time. Set in 1940, before America's entry into World War 2, the historical background and dialogue carry the stance of authenticity. The story is a fictional account of the first U.S. warship equipped with radar and Hitler's attempt to capture it. Its first mission is to escort the battleship transporting the gold reserves of Britain and other Allied Nations to the United States. Sub-plots are interwoven throughout the adventure like strategically placed fuses. Who is the German spy aboard the ship? Will the secret battles plunge America and Germany into war? Will Roosevelt be impeached because he has diverted secret funds for the development of the vessel without the consent of congress? Will the protagonist risk his ship and the lives of his crew in order to save his wife and son who are being held hostage by the Germans? The detail is rich and fascinating, giving the reader a convincing feel of the times, the intrigue of the secret operations, and the exciting sea battles. This book is a must for those who enjoy sea sagas, thrillers, and whodunnits...

Hitler Tries to Capture US Ship Before US Enters WWII
Prior to America's entry into World War II, Mark Kurtan, an intrepid U.S. naval commander, on a top secret mission, must fight covert sea battles against parachuting German commandos, U-boats, and aircraft attempting to capture the first US warship equipped with radar. Assigned to escort the battleship carrying the remaining gold reserves of the defeated Allied Nations, he must also contend with a spy aboard his ship, the capture of his wife and son by the nazis, and the marooning of his grandfather's ship loaded with gold near an exploding volcanic island. And that's not all! American gangsters attempt to pirate the gold. Franklin Roosevelt, Adolph Hitler, Winston Churchill, and other prominent world leaders and important personages of the time (1940) are characters in this most intriguing and exciting saga. Historically acurate events of the period are woven into the story and mesh well with the adventure, and the trials and tribulations of the four generations of the protagonist's family.

Action, spies, and a dashing hero in World War II arena
This is fascinating fiction set in a historical background, its time span covering June-October, 1940. The protagonist is a dashing American naval commander, Mark Kurtan, whose dynastic family ties lend a colorful touch to the story without slowing down the action-packed plot. There's something happening all the time: warships battling with U-boats, exploding volcanoes and nazi spies, gold-laden ships -- even some Mafia pirates thrown in for good measure! Supporting characters, handled in an imaginative yet believable style, include FDR, Churchill, and Hitler. The author has obviously done his research, making the technical material and battles credible and exciting; and the human side isn't neglected either, as Kurtan's relationship with his wife and son is brought into play. All of these facets are deftly handled by Dorfman, and the combination of exciting battle scenes with the hero's personal life add up to a terrific story -- which would, incidentally, make a great movie! All in all, A House at War is an absorbing and entertaining historical novel.

This book is a classic
Hard to improve on the previous editions, however, I like the tremendous online support that accompanies this newest edition. As always the text is consistantly readable, and the authors do a good job of dealing with the broad scope of the subject.

The best you can get!
The Integrated Principles of Zoology is the most thorough of the three in the Hickman/Zoology series. For a collegiate zoology/animal biology course, you can't find anything better. The 5th edition was the college/university standard back in 1975 when I took Zoology, and in the 11th edition is still the standard now when I teach Zoology. The text has been significantly revised since the 10th edition, with a terrific art program.

Four Star Book
This book told me everything I needed to know about zoology. It had a glossary in the back for words I didn't recognize and it was very informative. It is made like a text book for high school or college students.

One of Hervey Allen's Best non-fiction works
I read this book because Hervey Allen is one of my all-time favorite authors. This book was immensely fascinating, not only due to Allen's writing style (very readable and down-to-earth), but also due to the subject of Poe. I greatly enjoyed this entire book, and would very highly recommend it to anyone interested in either Allen or Poe. The book is difficult to find...I got it from Ebay for a very reasonable price, with dust jacket.

The Definitive Poe
Yes, it's true! Hervey Allen's "Israfel" is a must-read for any Poe-Lover. He paints a wonderful portrait of the tormented & brilliant Edgar. It's also a fantastic history of the era. Even if you've already read a dozen biographies on Poe, this is the one you won't want to miss! Trust me as a life-long and loyal fan of the Fabulous Edgar.

The First Definitive Biography
Much has been written about Edgar Allen Poe, but this classic biography offers a uniquely literary perspective on Poe. Written by the in the 1920s by Hervey Allen who later became well known for his epic novel, Anthony Adverse, Israfel was the first definitve biography of Poe and has been a foundational reference for all biographies written since. It has the added dimension of a biography written in the same general era that Poe lived thus, perhaps, telling us as much about that era as it does about Poe.

THE BIBLE OF THE KINGSTON TRIO
Superb, fun, and, most important, thorough history and discography of the great Trio. Lots of pictures and fascinating interviews (with the late Dave Guard, and Nick Reynolds, among others). Every song the Trio ever recorded is annotated, every release date of every single, album, and other material, including 7 Up commercials, is provided. Those of us still around who grew up with them and appreciated them know how great they were, and this book is a delightful revisiting of these extremely talented, and witty young men and their unique time - that tranquil window between the Eisenhower 50's and the Beatle-ized 60's. This book answers a lot of lingering questions. Happily, the guys who put together this book are also responsible for making available, thru their mail order outfit, every Kingston Trio recording that has been re-released on CD.

The single greatest tribute to THE TRIO(s)ever assembled
Having fallen in love with them when I was 7, and still considering them the greatest pop group of all time (sorry Beatles fans), this book is a must for anyone who wants to get to know them. Congrats to all concerned. There will never be anything like them ever again, and this book captures our little moment together better than anything except, of course, listening to the records. Thanks for the memories!!!

OH THE MEMORIES
I'M PROUD TO COUNT MYSELF AS A BIG BIG FAN OF NICK,BOB,DAVE AND later JOHN. I STILL PLAY THE 33RPM OF THEIR CONCERT AT UCLA and thrill to KEN Kangara, with Nick on the congo drum and Roddy McCorley, they bring back memories of a time of infinite promise known to us insiders as the 60's Ya hadda be there
