Everyone should read this book!!
This is one of the best books I have ever read! I highly recommend it to everyone. This book kept me spellbound. If you had trouble getting interested in history before, you won't while you are reading this. Why can't they teach history like this in school?

Allan Eckert spent 7 years researching this book. It is a true story of history. He tells the truth about the frontier as it was for real people. I am so glad a friend recommended this book to me. I plan to re-read this book and check out some of Eckert's other books.

Great Tale of the Eastern Frontier
I love this book! Eckert's classic tale of Simon Kenton and settlement of the Ohio Valley is a must read for anyone interested in the history of the United States. This book was recommended to me after reading Eckert's "Dark and Bloody River". It is exciting, highly engaging, and historically detailed. The notes at the end of the book are a novel by themselves. The story of Kenton, Boone, and the Kentucky settlers is truly amazing. It has often been said that this should be required reading in high school and I can't help but agree. Eckert's books take place in a time and place nearly forgotten by modern Americans. Children raised on the old "Cowboys and Indians" westerns never learn that there was a whole other "West" on the Eastern frontier and the Northwest Territory. I grew up in Ohio, and I never learned about many of the events that happened in my own back yeard until I began reading Eckert! Many people are surprised to learn that there were a number of very bloody and significant battles during the Revolutionary War west of the Appalaichans, right here in Ohio in fact. A whole chapter of our history is being forgotten, but luckily, Eckert's books help to prevent that.

A truly gripping biography of an unsung American hero.
I last read this book two years ago and plan to read it again soon. I honestly could not put it down! It is a true story of Simon Kenton who as a teenager became one of the bravest and most skilled frontiersmen of the late 1700s. He became a friend of Daniel Boone and in fact saved his life in a daring rescue at Boonsboro. The book includes many detailed facts gathered from diaries, memoirs, historical records and many other sources and each is carefully footnoted. Many references are made to geographical locations of events so that you can actually drive up to the place where these historical events occurred. It is history turned into a novel and is very enjoyable reading.

Poe is an underappreciated genius
Poe has been overlooked by today's literary order, but the man was one of the finest American authors ever. His stories paved the way for other great and popular authors--everyone from Conan Doyle to Stephan King. This book is an outstanding collection and should be read not for its literary value (which is tremendous) but for the sheer fun of it.

Fantastic Poe!
Poe is one of the best horror writers ever to have lived. I have read all of his works. Some of his best stories are The Fall of the House of Usher, The Masque of Red Death, The Black Cat, The Cask of Amontaiado, The Pit and the Pendelum, and The Tell-Tale Heart. His great poems include-The Raven and The Bells. Poe is a fantastic author, and his creepy tales of the dark side of life should be read over and over.

Tales from the Master
Poe is one of the world's finest writers and this collection of stories is what he's all about. This book contains the best of his tales, with many others for you to explore on your own. It has his poems and short stores. Its contents is very close to being unabridged except, for it missing a few poems and stories that aren't very good anyway.

Poe's tales contain all the excitement of a novel, in around 10 pages. I recommend this collection because it offers hours of enjoyment. The only thing you might need is a large vocabulary because he tends to have an advanced word choice. Get this book and have fun!

Leslie's Journal
This book was totally interesting. It is NOT NOT NOT for little kids. It deals with an abusive boyfriend and sex. Leslie is the rebellious girl at her high school- on the verge of being expelled, until she meets Jason. He appears nice, but is really a horribly abusive monster. How Leslie deals with him makes an interesting and inspiring read.
Has some cussing.

Awesome Book!
This book is about a young girl who is has to go through one of the worst things in life. She meets a new guy at her school and thinks hes a pig for looking at her. All the girls fall in love with him and he likes Leslie. Leslie starts likeing him and she is making a girl in school jealus about him. Well he asks her out for a date, and they go to his house. She has a few drinks. She gets drunk and does everything he tells her to. His parents call and say they are coming home. He tells her she has to get out she finally realizes what happened. They next day she asks him if they did what she thinks they did and he says yes. Well he makes her keep having sex with him and she doesn't want to anymore. He gets mad at starts hitting her. Now you have to read the rest to find out what happens to Leslie.

Very interesting
"Leslie's Journal" is the typical story of a teenage girl whose boyfriend abuses her. Though the story has been told so many times before, this one is especially good. Leslie has to write a journal for her English class, and after a short time, she starts to tell secrets she'd never tell anyone. Secrets about her best friend, her mom, her teachers, and her boyfriend. Until her English teacher reads it, and reports it to the principal, because Leslie has written about her abusive boyfriend. Her boyfriend gets called down to the office and questioned, and later comes after Leslie. It's a very good book, but it is haunting. I strongly reccommend it.

Good, but left me wondering...
This was one of the best low-carb books I've read for its in-depth analysis of WHY low-carb dieting works. It also seeks to debunk the popular myths about diet and nutrition, such as that fat is bad for you. It left me wondering, however.

There were a number of places in the book that left me scratching my head. For example, it goes on in depth about our body's need for three of the B vitamins, and how they are found primarily in meat. But, when describing an experiment involving two doctors that checked into a New York hospital where their diets were strictly controlled and limited to only meat (no fruit, veggies, grain, milk, or even eggs) for a year, the doctors showed marked improvement in health and energy without any indication of deficiency diseases. There is no vitamin C in meat, so what prevented scurvy? The authors didn't say, nor did they indicate the usage of supplements.

Something else that bothered me, too, was the fact that the authors kept using the term "in vivo" when what they really meant was "in vitro." I would think doctors would get their terminology correct.

Other than that, it was a good read.

Life Without Bread
Over the years I've read many of the books out there on low carbohydrate dieting, and in my opinion this is one of the best there is. The book is based on the many years of practice and studies done by German Dr. Wolfgang Lutz. It's very straight forward and makes a low carb lifestyle fairly easy to accomplish with few, easy to understand rules. It also gives a lot of good information on how a low carb lifestyle can positively impact many common medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, cholesterol levels, etc.

Life Without Bread
THE BIBLIOGRAPHY IS WORTH THE PRICE OF THE BOOK! Well written compilation of research done on diet/low carb diets. NO specific type of low carb diet is advocated beyond keeping carbs below the maximum of 72 per day. Covers the short and long term benefits of low carbin' as well as how to alleviate some of the discomforts new low carbers encounter. Lots of new information not contained in other low carb books.

I spy fun.....and guns?
This book is fun for children and adults because of the appearance of characters from classic nursery rhyme characters and storybook classics. Each page features a familiar character amidst the beautiful illustrations.. Sequencing is a major feature of this simple volume, which arrives, full circle back to the opening character, Tom Thumb, having plum pie with the entire round of characters. This book is described as gentle, however, Baby Bear has dire need of some gun safety classes, and it is possible that some children may be disturbed by the close calls that Baby Bunting has that result from Baby Bear's lack of control over his hunting rifle. I know I was! The incidences inside provide a teachable moment about guns. Beautiful pictures; enchanting text. Possibly lots of questions and conversations.

A book to treasure
I bought this book for my kids because the title was so familiar to me. After reading the first page, I realized that I read this one as a child. This book has wonderful illustrations. You'll want to give your child some time to soak up the content of each picture. Children love books that offer them a chance to participate, and this one definitely does that. The rhyming words are fun to read for the beginner, and even adults can't help but shout out, "I spy Tom Thumb!"

A Captivating Piece of Literature for All Ages
I was introduced to this book during my language arts class for elementary education majors. Our wonderful professor read this book to us as a read aloud experience. All of us being adults was abosolutely fasinated by this book. We were all trying to find the charatcers on each page and each one of us fell in love with this book. This book is so much fun but it also gives young children the chance to learn how to read by hearing the rhyming words used throughout the book. I have read this book to several children and I cannot express to you enough how much each one of them love this book. Please purchase this book!!!!!!!!! I insure you it will be a treasure for your child and you as well.

The only responsible way to read Plato
The Republic is a challenging, intricate, subtle work in which every word counts. This is why a "literal" translation is necessary -- a translation that truly reflects the Greek. Bloom's introduction, in which he defends this approach, is an excellent argument against paraphrasing translations, which water down Plato and make him easy and unsurprising. (One exception to Bloom's literality: he translates "hyƓn polis," 372d, as "city of sows" rather than the traditional "city of pigs." There is no justification for the female "sows" in the Greek, and I must assume that this is just Bloom's own chauvinist pigdom coming out.)

Bloom's interpretive essay presents his reading of the Republic as an implicit criticism of the thirst for absolute political justice. A plausible reading, but not as obvious as Bloom sometimes makes it sound. (To see the more subtle source of Bloom's ideas, read Leo Strauss's "The City and Man." And for a fictionalized portrait of Allan Bloom, see Saul Bellow's new novel, "Ravelstein.")

A great translation that does justice to a great work
Plato's Republic is really beyond reviews, and it would be presumptuous do anything other than encourage potential readers to study it for themselves. As the overt political slants of some of the other reviews suggest, his ideas resonate in the modern world as much as they did in his own. Whether a reader approaches Republic with positive or negative prejudices, the actual text of the argument forces constant reevaluation and refinement of those preexisting opinions.

Allan Bloom has created a literal translation that is ideal for those who truly wish to engage with Plato. Most other translators have used non-literal methods that attempt to convey in a more contemporary form what Plato "meant" by his arguments. However, in this process the translator's own interpretation of Plato's argument inevitably influences the language in which he renders his translation. Bloom has attempted, with a great degree of success, to separate the processes of translation and interpretation. Rather than imposing his reading on the text itself, he express it in a thought-provoking interpretive essay that follows the text

This is probably not the easiest translation of Plato to read, because Bloom does not attempt to serve as a baby-sitter for his readers. However, the extra time spent in reading this version will be well rewarded by a deeper understanding of Plato's argument.

Bloom points to a 'New' Philosophy
What is so fascinating about this translation and the essay is that it deviates in important ways from the typical Christian Platonist conception of philosophy. Bllom is engaged in a war of sorts, it is stunning oh so many other academics fail to recognize how Bloom undermines their common assumptions about 'The Republic' and philosophy itself. Note the absence of comment on the 'Divided Line' of Book VI, and the entire discussion of the 'Theory of Forms' get short shrift. Why? There is a reason, if you follow the interpretitive essay, a parenthitic expression sends shivers- did Bloom really suggest 'The Just City in Speech' is not the best regime? Haunting. This view of 'The Republic' is deeply dependent on Leo Strauss' earlier groundbreaking sensitivity to irony. This is easy to say-IRONY- Plato was ironic, "The Republic' is ironic, but what does that really mean? An excellent read, and read, and read again.

Complete Stories of the "Poet to the T"
I Bought this book a couple of years ago and found it to be the most utterly enjoyable collection and find myself returning to it time and time again. From his earliest works on "Tamerlane" his work as a playwrite on "The Politian". This book has it all. The Poe's novel, "The Narrative Of A. Gordon Pym", down to Arthur Conan Doyle's blueprint for Sherlock Holmes comprised in the three tales of C. August Dupine. It has everything even thoughts of Poe in his essays such as the opening to the poetry portion of the anthology entitled, "The Rational Of Verse". As an extreme Poe enthusiast who has written papers since highschool on his works to the man himself this collection is an excellent addition to any library of classic horror and the macabre.

Poe In my mind
I read a few stories by Poe: they include "The Murders of the Rue Morgue," "The Raven," "The Tell Tale Heart," "The Cask of Amontillado," "The Gold Bug," and "The Fall of the House of Usher". I thought all of these stories are very interesting. As a junior in high school I thought I was going to have a very boring time reading Poe for a project we had to do for school. Surprisingly I was not bored with his writing style at all. Especially when I read "The Tell Tale Heart," which was by far my favorite story by Poe thus far. Poe brings you into his work rather slowly, but once you get past the first page or two he sucks you into his writings.

When you read his stories you wonder how a person can think of these sorts of topics to write about. You realize Poe's mind was definitely not one track thinking, but very open to various themes. Poe's writings are good for anybody to read, especially if you are into sick and twisted stories.

Poe may not seem to be very much of a fright story writer nowadays, because we have so many movies with amazing special effects. But after you read Poe and realize what time he wrote in you think he is a pretty spooky writer.

In my mind Poe is an amazing author and I come from a generation where we have substituted movies for books. Poe is a must read author some time in your life, so take a minute and instead of watching Texas Chain Saw Massacre read one of Poe's stories and you will feel like you accomplished something more meaningful.

Simply Marvelous
Edgar Allen Poe. I'm sure you have read his most famous of works, The Pit and the Pendelum, The Tell Tale Heart, the Raven etc. But who of you has ventured deeper into his writings? There are many of his lesser known works that will keep you glued to the couch for hours. Example: The Angel of the Odd. You may think you know Poe, but.... you really don't. This book also contains an introduction that was very interesting. I know much more now, some of which I wish I didn't learn. Excellent stories, excellent poems, excellent book.

Playability of Deadlands
Deadlands provides the players a change of the usual fantasy world of Role-Playing. They can recreate events in the mid-1800s acting like cowboys and indians. They can recreate their own western movie. The Deadlands world also includes a colorful cast of creatures and its own, personlized form of history. A must for role-players with a need for a change of pace. The game does have problems. Most notibaly in the combat sequences. However, character creation is fun.

A totally innovative roleplaying system
This system is a must for roleplayers who have either become jaded with their existing system or just want to try something new. It provides a comprehensive story-line and time-line and gives the characters a whole new lease on development. The lay-out the book is easily read-able and engaging and provides the reader with an understanding of just how much is left to the players and Marshal. When I bought this book, I just had to show it to my roleplayign buddies, and they now are totally hook as I am sure you will be. If you wish to know more contact me or the Deadlands list serve. Marshal Psycho.

Deadlands: all roleplayers should try it, and like it.
After reading Deadlands, I just thought I had to share this with my players. Now, when I happen to say 'I may marshall a Deadlands next week', I just happen to have too many players.

It is the first time a Western Game has been good. And it will be hard to ever do better.

Essential for every serious dieter!
I have found using Allan's Food and Exercise Diary, along with his fat and calorie counter book, to be incredibly helpful in losing weight and getting in shape. Anyone who is serious about wanting to lose weight, whether it be 5 lbs or 100 lbs, absolutely must keep a food diary. I have tried to lose weight for years unsuccessfully. I recently started keeping this food diary every day, and so far I have lost 10 lbs! It has a very easy-to-use format, and has a section of tips. It allows you to track your progress. It is small enough for me to carry in my purse, so I never miss a beat. It really helps me feel in control while I'm dieting. Along with enough daily exercise, keeping a food diary is absolutely the way to go. I have raved about this book as well as the Fat and Calorie counter to my friends, several of whom want to get it now! I can't emphasize enough how much help it has been in losing weight. I finally feel like I CAN do it! And you can too!!

Powerful weightloss tool
The only way to lose weight is to take in less calories then you burn every day. I knew I needed to do that when I purchased this book and the companion Doctor's Pocket Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter. I decided to give use the diary for the ten weeks it covers and if I didn't lose at least ten pounds I wouldn't bother with it again. When I hit a weight loss of 20 pounds and still had some weeks to go I knew i had found a system that would work for me. And yes I did try all kinds of other diets.

Like other reviewers say it quickly becomes clear to you where those extra calories are coming from. I stopped using the diary and my weight loss stalled. It is so easy to forget you ate a little too much the day before.

How well has it worked? So far I've dropped two jeans sizes. My friends have seen my success and purchased copies for themselves.

I really like that it tracks your exercise each day. And it tracks your water intake. The fat counter helps me see if I am eating a high density or low density food. This little book taught me what was wrong with my diet.

This Book Works
I used this book about 5 years ago - it really worked. I lost 37 pounds in a year. I followed the recommendations and kept the food log every single day. It changed my life. I have kept within 5 pounds of my lowest weight ever since. I exercised and drank lots of water - now I am a different person and run 3 marathons and 3 half marathons each year.
Thanks Allan!!
Linda
