Models of matter, analogies in nature
Barton has written a book that should be compulsory reading for all budding university physcists and chemists and their teachers. He deals with models, analogies and other conceptual aids that are used in describing nature. His non-mathematical text captures very essential ingredients of science which are usually omitted in textbooks proper. Is it obvious that students understand the implications of model simplifications and unspoken ideality assumptions ?. How is reality added and model enhanced ? One of the nice features is that the book really deals with various sorts of matter: not only solid, liquid and gas but also surfactants, thin films, foams, aerogels, adhesives, gels, ceramics, glasses, liquid crystals, ........

A powerful thought anchor for non-science disciplines, too.
States of Matter is a beautiful critique on the models we use to understand our reality. The text is really humbling stuff -- not because I thought I "knew", but rather because it highlights that we can barely know what we don't know. This leaves us to publish an understanding of our reality that may, of course, be rigorous and functional, but at the same time must be continually subject to even total collapse as we move closer to the truth. In whole and in part, I've found compelling analogies in this book that can be practically applied across disciplines -- business, literature, etc.

A wonderful reference work for anyone studying "existence".
I found "States of Matter, States of Mind" to be an insightful compilation of the known interpretations of "matter" and forces as perceived through our limited senses and through our more highly sensitive laboratory instruments of detection. Allan Barton has done a wonderful service to all that may come across this work. One is taken through the maze of interpretations of the multiplicity of the patterns of existence - into the Classical/Newtonian - through the Quantum - and then out into the future of perception.

I keep this work close by as a reference when I do my own research and writing. I highly recommend this work to all who endeavor to perceive "reality" in its true form.

Step By Step
This is really a review of a review. I gave one of my best friends a copy StepWise after he remarried. The other day he said, "That book you gave me has been a big help. It has helped me keep perspective. It's not easy putting a new family together. It takes patience, humor and a whole lot of love. It (StepWise)is a wonderful book for parents who find themselves with a new family."

it's about time
It's about time someone approached stepparenting in an honest way. It's hard! But it can be enriching if you take the right attitude. That's what they show you how to do in Stepwise. They have a real sense of humor which is a MUST for stepparents and stepchildren. They're right, it is like coming into a movie that's already started and not wanting to ask dumb questions about what's going on. Buy this book, memorize it, and give it to other stepparents.

Raising stepkids can be funny and fun
This book says it all. In fact, I think I said some of these things and the authors read my mind. When I went through the stepdad routine, I was ready to give up until I saw it from the kids eyes, which is what the writers of Stepwise did. The book is very funny but every funny idea is really a way to get connected with your kid. I have gone to see really bad movies with my stepchildren and listened to rap music. Just like they say in the book, sometimes you start to like the movies and music yourself. I even went to the mall with my stepchildren. I have at least ten stepparent friends and they're all getting this book from me. My stepkids liked the book too. It's really just about being a good parent who isn't so uptight.

Tale of the Black Hawk War of 1832
This is the last book in Allan Eckert's Winning of America Series. "Twilight of Empire" chronicles the little-known but bloody Indian uprising in western Illinois in 1832 that became known as Black Hawk's War.

The war was named after the leader of the uprising, an old battle-hardened Sauk war chief named Ma-ka-tai-me-she-kia-kiak...Black Hawk. In the years following the War of 1812, white settlers flooded into Sauk and Fox lands and the native tribes were forced into signing treaties that gave up their ancestral lands to the United States. In the spring of 1832, Black Hawk, in defiance of the United States and some of his own tribal leaders, led a large band of his starving people back across the Mississippi into northern Illinois to reclaim their stolen lands. This large movement of Indians was seen as hostile by the local white settlers and the militia was called out to subdue Black Hawk's band. The fatefull encounter at what would become the Battle of Stillman's Run would start off what would be the last major Indian war of the midwest. In the end, Black Hawk and his people would be decimated by pursuing American troops under General Atkinson at the Battle of Bad Axe, where hundreds of Indian women and children were shot or drowned while trying to escape back across the Mississippi River. This sad event marked the end of Indian wars east of the Mississippi and signaled the end of the way of life for the woodland Indians.

This story is deeply moving and involved and tells the history of a people and events not generally known today. Highly recommended.

Best Story Ever Told
Not only is Twilight of Empire a great book, but the whole winning of america series are, without a doubt, the best stories ever told. I would recommend them to anyone, even those not very interested in history. You have got to read these!

GREAT HISTORY LESSON
ALLAN ECKERT GOT ME FOREVER HOOKED ON THE FASINATING HISTORY OF BLACK HAWK AND THE BLACK HAWK WAR. HIS STORY TELLING STYLE AND ACCURATE ACCOUNTS OF THIS IMPORTANT PART OF THIS AREAS HISTORY MAKES IT A MUST READ.

Eye Candy
Beautiful to look at. Not heavy in the way of company or technical history, but what a great coffee table book. Costly - if you can find it - but wow!

Another winner from R.L. Wilson

R.L. Wilson, who wrote this book, also wrote one called 'Colt, an American Legend.' Both books are exquisite, coffee table size--eight and a half inches by eleven inches (landscape)--and each are over 400 pages, almost every page filled with extremely high quality color photographs.

R.L. Wilson, in addition to being a collector and well-known author in the firearms field, is a historical consultant to Colt's Firearms Division.

The subtitle on the first page says, "The official history of Winchester firearms and ammunition from 1849 to the present," which pretty much covers the entire history of the Winchester Firearms Company (now known as U.S. Repeating Arms, since a bankruptcy and change of ownership.)

If you are a Winchester aficionado, or just a Western history buff, with an interest in "The Gun That Won the West," this is a book you will want in your library.

It is one of my favorite books. It will probably be one of yours, also.

Author of THE ROAD TO DAMASCUS: Our Journey Through Eternity

Spectacular photos of America's finest collectable firearms
For those who do not own an 1866 Winchester or its predesessor, the Henry, this book comes as close to putting one in your hands as paper and print can. The cool of blued steel and the balance in a fine walnut stock are to be felt on every page. This book is an emblem for the art of still life photography today and for printers' skills. The images are stunning throughout. And pread after spread of exceptional Winchesters from collections around the world confirm that innovation and fine craft make collectables, whether from industry or the fine art studio. The text is useful but leaves one wanting more detail. For the beginner or aspiring collector, for example, a clearer way of differentiating one model and the next would be useful.

An engrossing continuation of the Timura trilogy.
An engrossing continuation of the Timura trilogy, WOLVES OF THE GODS delves even deeper into the connected fates of its main characters and expands the landscape and cultural scope of the epic. Again, I can't wait for the next book in the series.

Entertaining book with memorable characters!
The second book of the Timura Tales is a wonderfull and entertaining read. There are a few twists that are surprising given one has read the first book, and assuming that you don't read the back cover which may reveal one crucial twist. I can't wait for the next installment of this series. Mr. Cole has weaved a memorable book which leaves you waiting anxiously for the conclusion, although you may find yourself asking for more!

A fast-paced, powerful punch of a sequel
This is a series to be enjoyed by sf-readers as well as fantasy fans, as the magical elements are subordinate to an involving and suspenseful plot. This second volume brings to a pitch the increasingly intense and violent struggle between Timura and Protarus, while it continues to hint at their common destiny. Wolves is no simple story of clear moral good; we see both characters struggle with the compromise of their ideals and the acceptance of wrong action to achieve necessary ends. High level of suspense and engaging episodes of adventure. While the story is dark in tone, it's well balanced with moments of humor and sentiment. Terrifically paced, hard to put down. An exciting read.

Like Sitting with a Friend
This book was given to me as an extra-early 40th birthday present by a very dear friend. Reading this book of no-nonsense reflections is like sitting with a good friend, wrapped in quilts and drinking tea.

I highly recommend this book!
This book is like having a wise friend in the room. Sometimes "quote" books tend to be sappy; this one isn't. It's smart and uplifting - something you can stick on your bedside stand and dip into when you need a pick-me-up.

Warm. Witty. Wonderful!
From as far back as I can remember, I have been drawn to what some call "women of a certain age." It would be many years before I even began to understand the myriad reasons why this was so; and it was not until reading The Woman's Way: Celebrating Life After 40, that I ever saw so many of those reasons spelled out so eloquently.

Regan Brown's keen and witty observations about middle-age resonate with spirit and epitomize growth. Like King Solomon, who wrote "proverbs" about Life, the Universe, and Everything in bite-sized "nuggets" of wisdom, Brown's remarkable look at mid-life comes in short, sweet, touching, humorous, and acutely insightful observations.

The first thing I did upon finishing The Woman's Way was to go right back online and order a copy for my daughter.

Ausgezeichnet
Das Buch ist wunderbar. Herr Doktor Pierce hat ein ausgezeichnet Buch doch geschrieben.

A Deep and Classic Approach to Acoustics
Texts on acoustics approach the subject from many different angles and at many different levels. Pierce's text is classic, rigorous and complete. It should serve the needs of serious students of acoustics for a variety of purposes - musical acoustics and sound are my particular perspective.

Some writers cater their approach to electrical engineers or to mechanical engineers, assuming that by tieing everything to those disciplines they will make the effort easier for their readers. This may serve well those who come from those disciplines, but may not serve others well and may not serve all applications of acoustics equally well either. Pierce does not do so. His approach is rigorously mathematical and pure, going to the heart of the matter, rather than one of attempting to cut corners by making analogies to other fields that you may or may not know.

The book is not for the faint of heart or the mildly curious, it is deep and demanding. But he organizes it superbly and writes intelligently with a wonderful way of integrating the history and development of the science, and the graphics are exceptionally clear and communicative.

Highly recommended for the very serious about this subject. My favorite among the books I have consulted.

Affect Regulation and the Origin of the Self: The Neurobiology of Emotional Development
Published in Hardcover by Lawrence Erlbaum Assoc (1994)
Author: Allan N. Schore
Amazon base price: $135.00

Often Recommended
The mother influences the child's growth and development. That's pretty obvious. This book goes to the neurobiological underpinnings of this phenomenon, referring to several thousand studies, to show how the connection between mother and child actual influences the way the child's brain develops. It is a treasure trove of information on how the prefrontal cortex matures through interaction with the mother in the early stages of life.

As organizer of The Futurehealth Winter Brain Meeting, I have repeatedly recommended this book to colleagues who have an interest in frontal lobes, to attachment disorder, to the links between the brain and self control, violence in the schools, and even, in a recent on-line listserve discussion with a former president of APA, who suggested that first come values and then positive emotions. This books strongly suggests that first come positive emotions and experiences and these lead to establishment of a brain w hich is responsible and well regulated. This is no light read. But Schore is worth it. He's brilliant.

An exceptionally thorough, well written study
I found this book exceptionally engaging and fascinating. I have read much about the development of affective, cognitive, psycho-sexual, self and gender development, and wanted to learn more about the physiological and anatomical correlates to the observable behaviors in babies and children, and this book was 100% satisfying. The author painstakingly discusses Bowlby, Ainsworth, Spitz and other attachment theorists, providing the essential facts of affective and attachment development, and then in a very clear, understandable way, provides the neuroanatomic and neurochemical explanations of the observed phenomena. The book is intensively researched, and the ideas are developed in a sequential, logical and easy-to-follow manner. I recommend reading Robert Karen's book "Becoming Attached" first, to truly understand Schore's book.
