A remarkable, eye-opening reference
Now available in a newly updated second edition, Paying Teachers For What They Know And Do: New And Smarter Compensation Strategies To Improve Schools by Allan Odden and Carolyn Kelley is an innovative, ground breaking look at brand new, competitive motivation plans for teachers. It describes a vast variety of different compensation initiatives in use around America today, as well as the plans used in private vs. public sector schools. Knowledge-based and skill-based pay are extensively discussed, as is how to effectively begin a payment plan that rewards the best teachers who produce the highest results. Extensive indexing and a list of sources make looking up information on this hotly debated topic a snap. A remarkable, eye-opening reference, and very highly recommended reading for educators, school board members, and administrators.

Knowledge and Skills
Allan Odden and Caroly Kelley foreshadow teacher compensation alternatives that would elevate the art of teaching to a level of professional teaching. Governor Gray Davis (California) would be advised to add this book to his reading list.

Worth tracking down
This is a very sweet book with the right amount of repetition for our 17 month old boys - they bring me this book along with Each Peach Pear Plum (another Ahlberg creation) to read to them....over and over and over.

Here's a delightful book 1-2-3 Peepo!
This is a book I often send as a gift for new babies. My son is two and a half and has loved to have this book read to him since he was a few months old. The concept is what a baby can see. The story is told in a catchy rhyme which is fun to read (a plus for the parent who reads a lot of books to their child!) and easy to listen to. The board book has the added attraction of cut out round holes to give us the baby's view of the world - 'Peepo!'. For the baby or toddler listening to the story this is a bonus as they can put their hands through the hole and add a new sensation to the experience. The illustrations themselves give a nostalgic view of working class family life in post-war Britain. They are crammed with detail and give the child plenty to look at and for while listening to the story. The best kind of story reading experience for the very young child.

Competitors pit-pass; Step one.
In my quest for knowledge relevant to designing, building and driving a light-weight, high-performance sportscar, I have bought and borrowed numerous books, magazines, plans and workshop-manuals.
This book has been one of the best of my many purchases.
My one regret is that I didn't have this book much earlier; I very nearly did, but when I began my project, "Race and Rally Car" looked wrong to my novices' eyes. I hadn't realised then that my planned sportscars were so closely related to Formula racecars in all their systems and dynamics.
Now, with the benefit of my researching/learning experience, I am able to appreciate just how valuable a source Mr Staniforths' book is!
This is a truly great picture/storybook for us petrol-heads, a practical guide, and a comprehensive reference, all based on the authors' own extensive experience as a race-car designer, builder, and driver.
Those years of hard-won experience left an empathetic awareness of the broad-ranging requirements of a novice. He has created this book with just the right mix of wit and serious technical detail to inspire and encourage the reader with doubts about their own ability to "give it a go".
It encompasses all that is important in building a fast sports or racecar, thoroughly covering topics like planning, design, building techniques, technology, testing and development. It features excellent illustrations, really inspiring photographs, and includes historical and anecdotal material of considerable value to any aspiring Murrays, Tauranacs or Schumakers among us. There is also a detailed source-index to other authoritative sources for more complete descriptions of processes that have been, of necessity, only lightly dealt with here.
Overall, it's an enjoyable read and a sound investment. I suspect that the more sophisticated features of my ultimate design will owe more to this than any other single book.
It deserves a place in your library.

A wealth of information
This was the first book I bought related to race and sports car design. It is very well written, and Staniforth's writing style is very entertaining as well as being informative.

The book covers all aspects related to building and modifying a sports car and does so in reasonable depth. I did find that I will need other references where I want detailed information about a specific topic. For example, the sections on suspension are clear and offer good information and are sufficient to get you started with whatever project you have in mind. However, if one really wants to get down into the gritty mathematical details of designing suspension then a second reference specifically on that topic would be needed.

As a book to highlight all that is important in building a fast sports or race car, I recommend the book whole heartedly.

Wonderful book
This book, in a nutshell, is amazing. Atlas doesn't shy away from using sometimes-familiar language, empathizing with the reader and clearly explaining all major topics. It is very detailed but well-organized, and the musical examples are beautifully chosen. Additionally, the book is aesthetically pleasure -- it has lots of nice illustrations.

The anthology, which is sold as a separate book, is almost a must-have, since Atlas discusses most if not all works contained with it. (Also, it's a well-chosen anthology, and worth adding to your library.)

Therefore, if you like Renaissance music and want to learn more, or if you know a little about it and enjoy reading academic textbooks, this is the book for you.

Indispensable
This book is indispensable for every one, student or amateur, interested in Renaissance music. Clear and understable, with many examples (in this book and in the anthology companion), Pr. Allan W. Atlas book presents music in the historical, geographical, political and artistic context which produced it. In addition to excellent presentation of composers, musical forms (mass, motet, chanson, instrumental music) and many works, pedagogical exercices are real introductions to research : how to edit a Busnoys chanson, how to understand payrolls. Moreover, Pr Atlas asks readers about the opportunity of adding a sharp, understanding contemporary earwitness texts. The epilogue is about what is generally the introduction : is there any unity in what musicologists call Renaissance music (1400-1600)?

Good Book!
This book may be small, but it has a big meaning. It's about a girl named Sadie who made a snowman in her back yard. Unfortunately, some birds ate the "eyes", a squirrel ate the "nose", and a raccoon stole the "mouth", and the snowman melted down. So the next time it snowed, Sadie made the snowman all over again, but the same thing happened again. The animals stole all the ingredients, and the snowman melted away. This happens to her a few other times, but she never gave up. To find out how Sadie resolved her problem, read the book today!

This is a great book to read to children. It helps to show them that no matter how many times you may fail, or however many times something goes wrong, to keep on trying because things will work out in the end.

Nice illustrations!
This story has real nice illustrations. Here's what the book's about: Sadie is a girl who is trying to make a snowman. The first time she makes a snowman some animals eat what she used for the eyes, mouth, etc. and then he melts. Sadie gets depressed but the next time it snows, Sadie makes another snowman. Problems come up for each one she makes. Can Sadie find a way to solve her snowmen problems? Find out when you read this book.

Fantastic Adventure!
This book is truly a masterful work of adventure, terror, triumph, and travel. I have been reading this story to my classes of pre-teens for years and they all have begged me to continue when read aloud time is over. This story drops adolescence on it's wild behind smack dab in the middle of the savage and beautiful rainforest. I would highly suggest this read for any 5th to 8th grade student of yours.

A Wonder-filled Journey through the Amazon Rainforest
This fascinating book is a great favorite with three generations of my family. The story takes you into the Amazon rainforest with Sarah, a young teen, as she navigates the huge rainforest alone after she is separated from her naturalist father and their group. It is easy to get lost in the rainforest, and she does, but she keeps her head and remembers her father's teachings and manages to survive, find shelter and food, and keep from getting injured. The reader shares her thoughts as she worries about all these important matters and shares in the wonder of her experiences in the rainforest. She meets a native boy named Juma who helps her learn even more while they slowly learn each other's language. This book is filled with real, dependable information from a great nature writer. As you enjoy the well-written story you learn much about the rainforest that you ordinarily could not learn unless you actually went there. This is a very rare experience in reading! I highly recommend it.

Norman Bethune - A Life of Service, Compassion & Excitement
This is a book that should be on the essential reading list for those planning a career in medicine (surgery). It is truly inspiring, and it provides an interesting history of the early years of thoracic surgery, transfusion medicine, and humanitarian committment. I recommend those who have the opportunity to visit the Bethune Peace Hospital in China, about a two hour drive from Beijing. The Bethune Museum there is wonderful.

A story of Curage
I remember this story from my mother reading it to me a s a child and again reading it as a highschool student. I gave me hope that one person can make a difference. That we can do things to help people not for fame and fortune but because people need our help and we have the expertise to help ease their pain and suffering.

Norman bethume was such a man and his story needs to be told again and again. I highly recommend it to anyone who values the efforts of individulas and the love of community.

You need this book
This book was the most helpful piece of information for our trip to Scotland. It not only helped you while you were in the country, but helped you get there. We found that the places they reviewed were well worth it and that we ended up in a few we didn't even realize we had gone to. For instance, we lost a friend after the Tatto and ended up with the Edinburgh police force. Once we found our friend they mentioned a pub they were going to so we went and the next day I was looking through the book and there it was on pubs to visit. Buy the book it helped us get everywhere we wanted to be.

Plain Language Planning Not Dumb At All!
One of the things I love about the "For Dummies" series of books is that they explain complicated topics in a manner that the average person can understand. In this case, a vacation to a country of such contrasts as Scotland (where else can you have snow-capped peaks *and* palm trees ... no kidding!) calls for a book that "tells it like it is." David G. Allan's "Scotland for Dummies" is precisely that book. Allan gives readers the advantage of his experience as a traveller to all of Scotland's varied regions, sharing what's a hit and what should be missed. Particularly useful are the "heads up" bits ... quick blurbs that give warnings about peculiarities that might be encountered along the line. Jeff and I found the information in this book invaluable in our honeymoon planning.

The Definitive book on training
This book gives you everything you want and more! I followed this closely when I had a crummy track coach in high school and my times ended up being exactly at the race pace I was training for. I have used these workouts in coaching as well and have seen great success with them. A lot of the books that come out nowadays are just commentaries on runners--this one gives you the year-round training schedules you've been looking for.

Excellent running schedules for all levels and distances!
The second part of the series concentrates on shorter distances (800m to 5,000m/5miles). Along with general information and discussions the most useful part of the book are the practical day-by-day 10-week schedules. The schedules are very specific - depending on time goals, initial preparation and the distance. Excellent book!
