The Gift of Self
This book offers the reader a wonderful means "know thyself." The book, and the course by the same name which is taught by Dr. Hunter has been the basis of my life for over 10 years. I still go back from time to time and do some of the exercises I learned. A timeless work, and a heartfelt thanks to the author.

So helpful! Sets time aside to think about who you are!
I was a member of one of the classes Dr. Hunter taught on the Therapeutic Uses of Writing. I learned so much about myself and how to think about how I developed into who I am. I currently work with college students and use the book to aid them in their thinking and growth and development! It helps us to build a bonded and cohesive team and to develop life-long relationships with each other. The exercises are user friendly and don't make you wonder what to do next or how to use them appropriately. They are perfect! I highly recommend this book for the work that you do with others and within yourself!

The affordable version and a real gem
This is the paperback version of the $65 hardcover; see a review under Therapeutic Uses of Writing.

Tough Workouts That can make you faster
This is a book with a series of planned distance runner workouts
to get you in shape for the time you want to run. If you want to run a 40 minute 10K or a 34 minute 10K, the author has got the workouts for 7 days a week that run for months until you are ready to peak. Lots of track workouts, tempo and distance runs. I got in great shape following the workouts for my goal; however, the workouts are tough. I used to do the workouts for a goal a minute slower than my true goal because the workouts were a little too tough. I think the workouts set for specific times were really keyed to make you faster than the time you were training for. If you want to have a planed training program and run your optimum, this is it.

One of the Best I've Ever Read
I have used this book to enhance my training for 5k to the Marathon. It is easy to use and makes a lot of sense. I have also had the pleasure of getting additional help from Al in person. He is my idea of what a coach should be.

Most comprehensive, readable and directed manual for runners
No matter how much experience you have as a runner, this guide can help you achieve any goal. It is too bad it is out of print; my copy has swelled with rain water from sitting at trackside, been stepped on coming back from workouts, and generally seen more mileage than any of my shoes. Now, if only it would come back into print, I could replace it. The book outlines workout schedules, means to recover from injury, and nearly any other information you might need.

Marvelous! A must-read!
I had to read this book as a school assignment (I'm in 7thgrade), and enjoyed it immensely! Mr. Eckert presented the nature ina clear, understandable way without twisting the facts. The story flows well from one animal to the next. Wild Season is definitely one of the best books I've read. I'd recommend it to anyone!

A Book To Read Every Spring.
I read this book many years ago and have read it every Spring since. It never gets stagnant. It moves along with a flow that could be compared to Nature. I recommend that anyone with the least bit of interest in nature and wildlife, should read this book.It will remain in your memories for a long time to come.

Excellent book detailing unseen everyday natural occurrences
I read this book as a youngster, and have reread it several times since. I would recommend it to anyone who wishes to explore a world that most don't take the time to notice. The author is most descriptive in explaining the how and why of all that happens in a very interesting ecosystem.

Atlas of Oregon - Excellent
Loy & Allan build upon previous atlas efforts (OR 1976, CA 1979) and make use of technology and greater knowledge to produce excellent, useful maps and charts. Pre-1865 (inch-pound) measuring units are used instead of U.S. (SI) units as used in the 1976 edition (for example, temperatures are in °F not °C). Historic growth and immigration maps, education (K-12, university and school districts), demographics and future temperature and precipitation scenarios make this a handy "big picture" reference.

Economic, water and transportation and other "sheds" enable a you to obtain a good understanding of past, current and future trends. Obtain the Atlas and CD - you will use them both for a long time.

A must buy for every Oregonian
This book is a bargain. The wealth of information collected in one place is amazing. I consider this book the ultimate collection of interesting data on the state of Oregon. Those with children in Oregon should consider this a "must buy" for their children's education.

The Best book on Oregon Ever!...
This is the best book about Oregon EVER!...It has all you need to know about the Indians, population and it evan has maps from the Lewis and Clark expedition! If you EVER need info on Oregon this is the Book to get!...

An August Achievement
'Augustine through the Ages' is one of those big, thick, $100 books that one longs to have in a private library (particularly the private library of someone with a catholic-leaning theological interest). I debated about the book for nearly a year until a friend of mine finally put the issue to rest by getting it for me for my birthday a few years ago.

I've now had sufficient time and use of the volume to warrant giving an opinion. I am sorry that I waited so long to add this book to my collection!

' "Augustine through the Ages" presents anew the life, work, and influence of Augustine of Hippo (A.D. 354-430), one of the greatest figures in the history of the Christian church. Best known to modern readers for his "Confessions" and "City of God," Augustine has had a profound theological and philosophical impact on the Christian faith, and his legacy is also reflected in the development of Western thought as a whole.'

This book is organised and functions as an encyclopedia. Over 150 scholars in fields such as history, classics, theology, philosophy and political science have contributed to making this a very comprehensive and in-depth reference work. The contents include nearly 500 articles with appropriate bibliographic references for further research.

Entries involve his life, his work, and his influence. A few samples will illustrate:

His life: Life, Culture and Controversies
In this entry, a brief biography of Augustine is present, from birth in Thagaste in 354, in the province of Numidia, to his death in 430 in Hippo, as it was under siege from Vandal invaders. It details the major events and influences in his life, as well as the general cultural milieu of the time - education under the Roman system, the relationship of church and empire, and the influence of philosophy, particularly Neoplatonism. The controversies of his time, in which Augustine energetically participated, included the Arian, Donatist, Pelagian and Manichean trends.

His work: Confessions
This entry gives an overview of the 'Confessions', the most popular and widely-read of Augustine for twentieth-century audiences. As a result of this autobiographical work, the youth of Augustine is far better known than almost any other person in antiquity. The article includes translation and publication issues (the question about oral or written primacy is explored), as are the differing purposes of sections (autobiographical, polemical, exegetical). This work covers conversion and growth in faith and work.

His influence
Articles are included on those who influenced Augustine himself, such as Origen, Tertullian, Plotinus, and Plato, as well as upon those he influenced, from early figures such as Jerome and Ambrose, to later theologians like Aquinas, Luther, and Calvin, up to more modern figures such as Adolf von Harnack, Ernst Troeltsch, and Martin Heidegger. Similarly, Augustine's contributions toward topics that are of current (and recurring) interest such as social justice, war, suicide, contraception, etc. are explored.

The book also includes tables Augustine's works which show Latin titles, English translations, common abbreviations (very necessary for scholarship) and dates. Articles are cross-references, particularly with a view toward shared bibliographic information.

The editor, Allan D. Fitzgerald is professor of patristics at the Augustinian Patristic Institute of Rome. He also is editor of Augustinian Studies published by Villanova University. Jaroslav Pelikan offers a word at the front, which is an interesting choice, given Pelikan's Eastern Orthodox leanings, and the strained love-hate relationship Eastern Orthodoxy has traditionally had with Augustine.

This is a truly monumental work that will find an honoured place in the library of any scholar.

An outstanding edition. . .
. . .which will be of value to Augustine scholars for many years to come.

The purpose of the encyclopedia is to provide a one-volume reference to Augustine, his life, his thought, his teachings, and his books. What did he believe about a particular doctrine? Look up the doctrine, get a synopsis of his thought, and find the appropriate reference(s) in his writings.

Wonderful for both Catholics and Protestants, esp. those branches of Protestantism which revere Augustine. Applicable for the layman or the cleric; for the serious student as well as for someone who simply wishes to be informed.

I highly recommend this volume.

The Single Best Volume on Augustine Available
This is, hands down, the best single volume on the life, work, ideas, and history of Augustine available. Not only does this reference work cover the period in which Augustine lived, but it also covers the periods in which Augustine had an impact. This book is very organized with charts of Augustine's works, and of course it covers the entire spectrum of Augustinian philosophy and theology from A to Z. This book is so detailed that many unexpected topics such as abortion to war are covered. The book is well referenced which enables the reader to launch into further works that have been used in compiling this massive volume. If you have been wanting a single volume that works well for quick references to detailed studies then this is the ONLY volume of its kind in print. I highly recommend this work for those who enjoy studying Augustine.

Great Resource!
Baseball America's Almanacs are a great resource to revisit the past season from MLB, minor/independent leagues, and college baseball. Also has the MLB draft picks by teams. Overall, a nice book/almanac to have around!

A baseball fan's bible
There are several good sports almanacs available including the Sports Illustrated and ESPN almanacs. They both give comprehensive coverage to all major sports. This almanac, however, is a must if your major interest baseball because it not only gives in depth coverage of the major leagues, it also covers the minor leagues, college and even high school. The beginning of the book includes historical stats and records. Then, each individual team is covered in depth. This is a great resource and since, the media do not cover the minor leagues in baseball as they do colleges in football and basketball, this almanac is a great reference as to who the up and coming young stars are.

Stathead's Dream
I get this book every year and study it cover to cover. Baseball America does a fantastic job covering all the little things about the past baseball season. It has a great year in review section and compiles its own first and second team all stars. It also has a comprehensive listing of the minor league, college and high school season. There is an incredible amount of stats in this book that one could study for hours upon hours. This is a must have for any baseball fan and stat-head like me.

We Are All Hurt
I was deeply moved by this book and its authentic and sensitive treatment of a subject seldom spoken about. What gets into headlines is shamefully limited in understanding of the scope of the problem, and only with understanding will victims and perpetrators alike find the courage to seek help. And, the understanding needs to come from all, not just those directly affected, because our lives are all intertwined. What hurts one of us hurts all of us.

We must educate ourselves and this book has opened both my mind and my heart.

A compelling and candid memoir.
Because I Love You: The Silent Shadow Of Child Sexual Abuse by psychotherapist Joyce Allan (Coordinator of the Chid Development Resource Center and past Fellow at the VFH Institute on Violence, Culture, and Survival) is a compelling and revealing report on the psychology, beliefs and values underlying the child abuse associated phenomena of silence-keeping, not only by survivors of child abuse, but by their friends, family, and communities as well. The format is a compelling memoir, enhanced and informed by the expertise of a trained and experienced child activist. Because I Love You is strongly recommended reading for professionals dealing with (and students studying the psychology of) child abuse in general, and what the author describes as the "ecology of child sexual abuse" in particular. Because I Love You is a welcome contribution to the national dialogue regarding the sexual abuse of children, and in that regard is recommended to the non-specialist general reader as well.

Important Work!
Joyce, in a very intimate way, has revealed to the reader the consequences of keeping secrets about child abuse. We get to know her family as she reveals in a unique manner the story she must tell. Thank you, Joyce, for this vulnerable and important work. You may save a child from being abused today.

Understand U.S. Immigration Law through examples.
The most striking thing about this book is the extensive use of examples throughout the book. One of the main problems in understanding the law is trying to figure out how it applies to your particular situation. The use of examples is one of the best ways for an author to explain the various aspects of any law. In this book, the author did such a fantastic job that I have picked up the book at various times in the last decade to figure out how I can solve my own particular immigration problem and I was able to fix it very fast. He does such a great job that I got carried away by the confidence the book inspires and decided to handle one of the more difficult immigration situations myself. It worked out alright but in hindsight, I should have taken the assistance of a lawyer to make things easier for myself.

Another tremendous advantage in using this book is the latest updates available through the author's website (you will have to find this yourself using Google since Amazon reviews are not allowed to have web addresses in them - any addresses will be removed automatically). Immigration law is constantly changing and it is risky to follow the advice of any book since it would be outdated the day it was printed. The author is a well known authority on the subject and in the past, I have seen that he has always been very prompt in posting updates to the book between editions and also giving his interpretations of the latest changes to the U.S. Immigration law.

One thing I was told by several immigration lawyers in 1997 is that you don't need to find a local lawyer for immigration related issues. I am not sure if this is still true but what it means is that you don't have to despair if you live in an area that doesn't have a great immigration lawyer. You can always find someone with a good reputation that may be in another state. Based on the number of immigration issues I have gone through, I would strongly recommend anyone in similar shoes to be armed with the knowledge gained through books like this one, but still consult a good lawyer (especially if you are in a complicated situation).

The final step that I have pending is becoming a U.S. citizen (I am a permanent resident right now) and I am using this book to take care of this by myself. I wish you all the best of luck and I hope you find this book as valuable as I did.

Very usefull and well written
This is an excellent book for anyone going through the hurdles of US Immigration. The author covers all bases and still keeps the text easy to read and easy to reference. I have seen Mr. Wernick speak and have read his authoritative newspaper column and this book lives up to his usual high standards. It is the only book of its kind you will need and with the high cost of legal advice, you will save time and money.

A must read
This is the best book on this subject available. I am a new citizen to this country, and it would have not happened so easily without this great book. Thank you, Mr. Wernick.

Always helpful
O'Brien's commentaries on the prison epistles have never failed to help me when I have consulted them to understand Paul's letters better than I had before. The author writes from a theologically conservative and complementarian viewpoint but is always prepared to evaluate other views, while also clearly articulating his own.

This is one of the most helpful of the Word Biblical Commentary series.

If you read commentaries to help you to understand the text, so that you can better serve Jesus Christ, you will really appreciate this one, as well as the author's commentaries on Philippians and Ephesians.

If you have not studied New Testament Greek, you may find some of his argumentation hard to grasp.

[If you are serious about understanding the New Testament, a couple of years studying the language it is written in will be enlightening, and will at the very least open up for you the majority of the best commentaries!]

O'Brien, always solid
Much praise has already been laid down by others concerning this commentary. The five star rating I gave it should confirm to the reader my agreement. With this in mind, I'm going to focus on one particular aspect of the book.

If I could have any complaint about this commentary, it is that it is too scholarly and thorough. O'Brien interacts with so many sources and views, one can get a little too bogged down in all the reasoning. Some parts are hard to follow lucidly with so much material being compared and contrasted. The sheer number of inline references and sources can make following the text with your eyes rather difficult. This is my general complain of the Word Biblical Commentary series as a whole, and this one seems especially representative.

O'Brien commentary is a gold mine for those serious in academics, or pastors who are series about having a broad base. O'Brien offers a huge (indeed, perhaps exhaustive) bibliography of the different works dealing with the text. O'Brien could be you one stop source for all your researching needs. For the layman though (like myself), it might be a little too much.

That said, I wholly recommend this commentary for all those serious about study.

Great commentary
This is the best commentary available on Colossians. Like O'Brien's commentaries on Ephesians and Philippians, this work features in-depth exegesis, summaries and critiques of all exegetical options, interaction with the best contemporary scholarship, and clear writing. O'Brien argues for Pauline authorship, and his theological perspective is broadly in the Reformed tradition.
