They also have a delightful approach to collecting, emphasizing pieces that teach something or appeal to them, rather than perfect (and expensive!) museum-quality work.
This is the most down-to-earth treatment of this involved subject that you'll find. The authors stress simplicity while encouraging readers to buy what they like and not to overspend. More than that, the authors have practiced what they preach, and the pages of color photographs are a testament to the fact that their approach works. For me, the advice in this book made this beautiful art approachable and affordable.
This book will teach you about the history and basics of the art form and introduce you to the various pueblos and their pots and potters. On top of that, it's well indexed and a great reference book. Most of all, you will enjoy the authors' writing; their style is conversational and pleasant, rather than academic or haughty. It makes for a work that's not only informative, but fun to read. And whether you read this book front cover to back, pick out individual chapters of interest, or simply use it as a reference, it will be worth every penny you pay for it. It's my favorite (and most useful) book on the subject.

It is an absolute must-read.
This book is laugh-out-loud funny. Spit-Milk-Out-Your-Nose funny. Laugh-So-Hard-The-Folks-Riding-With-You-On-The-Subway-Will-Think-You're-A-Lunatic-And-Consider-Calling-The-Transit-Police funny. And the best part of it is that most of it is a true accounting of American sexual history.
I am on my fourth copy of this book, having loaned my previous 3 copies out and never received them back. My current copy will never be loaned out, under any circumstances.
Buy it. Now. You will pop a gut laughing.

Of particular interest, the chapter on the Church and Spiritual Warfare cut to the chase, with a no holds barred simplicity that went to the crux of the issue with the statement "Satan and his demons don't care whether we leave them alone or not, for they will attack us anyway". This point, I feel many people including myself in weaker (lazy) moments try to forget that reality. We think and hope (mistakenly) we can opt out of the battle and let someone more 'spiritual' deal with the issue. We feel we have enough to do just coping with our everyday burdens - not realizing the everyday burdens are in reality a result of conflicts in spiritual realms.
In a physical battle, everyone whether high or low, is crucial to the ultimate outcome. A lowly clerk in the quartermasters corps or a back sink man in the mess hall, cannot abdicate their responsibility and just leave it to the 'Navy Seals or Airborne Rangers' to win the war all by themselves. It takes the concerted efforts of everyone involved to accomplish the objective.
In the spiritual realm, Satan although already defeated, relentlessly pursues our souls with ferocity beyond human comprehension. God in his grace has given us the opportunity to partake in this struggle. I feel we will be blessed when we actively participate.
Woah !...... Let me catch myself, I don't want to write my own book here. It's just that Mr. Allan's scholarly endeavor is a superb example of a work directed by a man with a heart for God and a desire to serve Him in thought and deed. He has meticulously and methodically searched the scriptures for the passages that illuminate God's plan for his church. This he has presented in a fresh, lively format uncommon in many books dealing with biblical subjects. Pardon me for being repetitious, but in closing I must say; this book is a must read for the serious (committed) follower of the Lord Jesus.
I gave the book to my pastor and he read it. He liked the book so much that he ordered a copy for each of his staff.
My pastor commented that there should be a workbook available so that interested parties could study the book like a training manual.
I am exremely impressed with this book and hope that Robert Allan writes another one soon.

The goal of this book is to introduce the concepts and techniques needed to produce dynamic multimedia content. The extensions covered are Ming, GD, ImageMagick, PDF, and FDF. Each technology is thoroughly explained from installation through example use. A case study is then given to go into further detail on the use of each extension.
I especially enjoyed the fact that they provided installation instructions for these extensions. One of the biggest hurdles people have with using Ming, GD, and the others is the installation process. Once someone gets past that stage they can at least experiment with how the extension works. It can be very frustrating when you can't even get something installed. Hopefully this book will help ease some of that frustration.
The case studies used by the authors are superb. These are real would applications that people want to create every day! They include a headline grabber with Ming, a mobile web coffee shop finder with GD, an image gallery using ImageMagick, and a PDF template system. Each one of these case studies is designed to get you thinking. Sure, they you the code needed for the application, but they also show you how the design process works and detail possible enhancements.
The one thing I found lacking in this text was some type of common problems section. Invariably, people are going to have difficulties when it comes to installation or use of these extensions. A simple google search will show the abundance of problems related to these technologies. A small chapter, or a section in each chapter, detailing some of the most common problems encountered, with their fixes, would have been great.
Overall, this book is great. If you are looking to develop multimedia applications in PHP, it is a must have.
The book is organized nicely. As a "Professional" book, it assumes a decent understanding of PHP. This assumption saves you lots of time and unnecessary hand holding. There is a brief PHP refresher chapter for those who aren't quite as familiar with PHP as necessary, but after that refresher chapter, you're expected to understand things. You bought this book (or will, anyway) because you already know how to program in PHP but are not familiar with the various multimedia extensions.
The next several chapters each dedicate themselves to a specific extension concept: Ming, Ming with ActionScript, GD, ImageMagick, PDFLib, and FDF.
Each chapter gives an overview of the library, it's uses and limitations, and gives lots of example source code giving examples of all the functions in an extension and how they are used together.
The next few chapters are full-fledged application case studies. Though you may not agree with the authors' coding styles, these case studies walk you through (from start to finish) several different applications to show you how the libraries can be used within the scope of a larger PHP application, not just example toy scripts.
Following the case studies are several appendices. Each appendix is a language reference for a multimedia extension. Most of the information in the appendices is found online in the PHP manual, and I, for one, find it more convenient to look it up there, but having it in the book is a nice bonus.
Another wonderful addition is a full-color screenshots gallery index, which shows you what various scripts from within the chapters should look like when run. This is great for two reasons: 1) You can "check your work" as you write the applications and sample code in the book, and 2) You can see the results of functions in the book while reading it away from the computer.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about writing even just ONE application in PHP that will manipulate any supported multimedia (Shockwave, images, PDF/FDF, etc.) The time you save by having this book as a companion will more than pay for the cost of the book.
There is a short refresher on PHP followed by PHP Multimedia installation. Then it gets into the nitty-gritty stuff of making it work.
I found the case studies towards the end of the book particularly helpful in mapping out a solution action plan.
Please let me know if you find this review helpful. Thanks.

The book alternates between its original plot-a murder mystery of sorts involving a transgenic tied to the early second season's plot-and the continuation of the cliffhanger series finale's plot. And if that sounds like too much plot, you should be warned that this book is full of it. You will find countless paragraphs dedicated to informing unknowing readers of how certain elements of the story came to be in the televison series. Dedicated fans of the show will have no trouble understanding these aspects as they are probably already quite familiar with concepts such as the virus keeping Logan and Max apart and the ominous breeding cult that Agent White is somehow associated with. While the book does often spend time recapping these plot threads, it does not spend so much time as to become redundant to an already informed reader.
The plot of the show is further developed, but the author has taken minimal liberties with it. One issue left hanging in the series is resolved in Skin Game, but not without the possibility of a comeback. Coming from a purist fan of Dark Angel, Skin Game is worthy to carry on the story of the television series. The show's plot is never tinkered with, and the new story feels just like an episode from the series. The one and only drawback to the book is the ridiculous amount of profanity. There is so much cursing that the dialog at times seems uncharacteristic, even for the swanky characters of Dark Angel. However, the well-developed story of the book and the massive pedestal of underlying plot upon which it stands are enough to overshadow the vulgar shortcomings of the writing, making Dark Angel: Skin Game a well-deserved success.
e-mailing fox until they bring the series back.
