Laugh Out Loud
Once I started The Skin Game, I could not put it down. It was a great and funny read, I laughed out loud many times. I look forward to Mr. Wilkins providing some more laughs in his next book.

Tell It Like It Is
The type of book you don't want to put down untiil it is finished. Keeps one laughing throughout. A must read for anyone who ever visits Atlantic City. Even more entertaining for those of us who knew the city before the casinos came.

The Skin Game
Treat yourself to the comic escapades of a variety of eccentric characters playing their own game within a dubious justice system. I laughed out loud reading this book. You will too!

Re-calibrating our view of the Christian life
Hybels isn't a wordsmith, but he's probably the best I've heard/read at hitting you between the eyes with a simple, powerful message. This book chronicles the lives of several individuals who turned their frantic, rat-race lives upside down by "descending" into humility and self-sacrifice. Hybels parallels the life and attitudes of Christ, describing how the God of the universe humbled himself to become our Savior in order to reach a greater joy. Easy, motivational, powerful reading

Down-to-Earth Principles on True Success
Hybels presents a fine definition of true, godly success in this work. He begins by describing the downward path to Christian success as opposed to the upward path to secular success. He then addresses various principles of success or greatness: power, commitment, servanthood, humility, obedience, and joy. Following an explanation of each principle and its biblical basis, Hybels includes a current-life illustration to drive his point home. He concludes his work by sharing his own personal story of descending into greatness, appealing to the reader to follow the biblical pattern. His conclusion is the most powerful part of the entire book.

I wholehearted recommend this book to all Christians, but especially to Christian leaders who are pursuing success. As the Scriptures say, and as Hybels says, being great is found not in becoming the head of the pack, but in becoming the servant of all.

True Discipleship
In this incredible book Bill Hybels and Rob Wilkins put contemporary flesh on the biblical truth that he would lead must first make himself nothing. (Chapters are paired, one teaching a principle and its partner showing how it is playing out in the life of real people.) It's a powerful reminder that true Christianity centers on the advancing of the Kingdom of God, not in the advancement of ourselves. This book will change your life. It's a well written, soul scraping challenge that every Christian should read.

very usefull, and nice to read
When I started work in an emergency department this book gave me many tips to solve some difficult cases. It is written in a way you can read it for few minutes in between patient visits in your night shift. The readability is high and you never get bored because it fixes every question in few lines (maximum 20 but mostly less than 10).
Obviously it is not really comprehensive, due to the small dimension and the question-response format; but it is sufficient also to study on it for examinations. It requires at least a basic understandig of medicine and it is not interesting for a lay person in many chapters.

I'm not a doctor, but...
...I just like to read everything about medicine, because I hope to be a doctor one day. I found this book in the medical library at our university, and I liked it a lot. Compared to any textbook I have ever read, it is very clear and basic, but still covers a lot of information, and has a good balance between the weird trivial information that probably comes up occasionally, but is good to know about when it does, and the basic stuff. Also, some of the doctors who write chapters actually have a sense of humor, which makes the book interesting to read. Check out the chapter about bites and stings by Lee Shockley, which is particularly entertaining.

This book is great!
This book provides a weath of information, and is a great study guide for residents.

A high-quality, delightful poetry book
My daughter fell in love with this book starting at the age of two. (She is now 3-1/2.) The poems have been selected from a wide variety of authors, and the quality is high. The subjects are ones that children can easily relate to, and the vocabulary and rhythm are engaging. My only criticism is that I would like to see more children of color in the illustrations.

A Toddler Read-Aloud MUST!
We read this book at least a million times to our toddlers andyet they always wanted to hear it again. Great poetry that is a joyto hear (even for the adults doing the reading)! The illustrationsare equally marvelous.

I'd give it all the stars in the universerse
Poems to Read to the very Young,Illustrated by Eloise Wilkin. Was such a wonderful Discovery when I was a child. A friend of my mom's gave us a copy. We read it so much that all the pages fell out and we lost them. I checked it out of the library and truly thought of never returning it, but just paying the fines and the cost of the book. However, I didn't want to deprive other children of the joy and magic. Please encourage the publisher to print more.

Stedman's Abbreviation book
This book is an excellent resource if you review medical record documentation for any reason. I use it all the time as a nurse and a coding/compliance auditor. Everyone in my department has their own copy. It is a necessary tool in the industry.

Overall, I find Stedmans's is the best abbreviation book available. It is comprehensive and is easy to use. It gives multiple listings for each abbrevation. Don't struggle trying to read charts, buy yourself a copy!

A Top 10 Seller At Medword.com
Not only do we refer to "Stedman's Abbreviations, Acronymns & Symbols" in our own daily work as medical transcriptionists, we also recommend it to the thousands of MTs who visit our web site at medword.com every day. This book is always in our list of Top 10 Sellers.

The language of medicine is filled with unique words and phrases with new ones being added regularly. Abbreviations, acronyms, and symbols are also used extensively. This book is important for any medical transcriptionist to own since a number of abbreviations in the field of medicine may mean different things depending upon the physician's area of specialization. This book will help you identify which abbreviation or acronym best applies for the specialty you are transcribing.

We heartily recommend it with 5 Stars and consider it a "Must-Have" medical reference book for a medical transcriptionist.

A must have for any MT!
This reference book is invaluable. It is easy to use and layed out in dictionary form. I found everything I needed to look up. Once again, another outstanding Stedman Word book!

Please, more Pa!
This series keeps getting better and better. I enjoyed reading about Pa's family, and the members that were around for the Big Dance, grown up, in The Big Woods.

I guess my only complaint for this book and other books in the series is the lack of quality illustrations. Who can mimic Garth Williams exactly, but I the missing illustrations hurt visualizing some things that would be foriegn to readers 150 years later.

Great Book that Finally brings "Pa" into the picture!!!
This is an excellent book that, if you don't have any plans for the next few hours, I'd sit down and read! You can't put this book down for a second, not even to answer the phone! I want to see more books about Caroline out on the market soon, I've been waiting for over a year now since this book came out!

Great addition to Caroline years
After reading the first four "Caroline years" books by Maria D. Wilkes, I was surprised to find a new Caroline book by a different author. But, if it weren't for the name on the cover, I wouldn't have noticed, as her writing style seems exactly the same. The books are not exactly suspenseful, but they're lively and pleasant. In this fun addition, Caroline meets her new neighbors across the river, including Charles Ingalls, the boy she would eventually marry. (In real life, Caroline's brother Henry married Charles' sister Polly, and Caroline's sister Eliza married Charles' brother Peter, so the two families were well-acquainted indeed!) If you've enjoyed other Caroline books, or just the little house series, you'll enjoy this one too.

The most fun you can (legally) have with the dead!
Often hilarious, often tragic, but mostly a quick and "lively" read, this book is a must have for anyone who is interested in a topic that most people shun. This book (which includes chapters on Grave Robbing, , Premature Burial, and Mummification) has a wonderful "English" feel to it (lot's of gallows humor and an Author who treats the subject with the right balance of seriousness and levity). The section on the death of George II is worth the price of the book alone. True, a few myths are taken as historical fact - but many others are dispelled. Ahh Hell, this is just good, clean, morbid FUN.

Later title: DEATH A History of Man's Obsessions and Fears
You won't feel "Morbid" reading this book. The writter makes the reader feel very comfortable with this subject. He literally puts the FUN back in Funeral- using humar where appropriate. No stress- Just History and a lot of it!!
He begins with being Buried Alive then goes to Body Snatchers,Mummification,Embalming,Cremation,Tomb stones,Suicide and Fears of planning your own funeral.
I purchased another copy in case my friends lost one while they read it- it's that good. DON'T MISS THIS BOOK!!
After all you can't avoid it.

dense, but worth the trouble
i find it funny that a reviewer below has an affection for wittgenstein but a dislike for bernhard, claiming bernhard is more difficult. that gives you some idea of how bernhard is; his difficulty is that of a philosophical treatise, and not as of tiny little aphorisms. but both writers, thinkers, deserve the same amount of intense thinking and mulling over. this book is something you cannot read for hours on end, if simply because looking at no paragraph breaks hurts the eyes. but if one has read philosophical treatises before then this work should be easy to handle. orther than that, namely, considering the content of the work it is masterful. not only that, bernhard presents his unique ideas in a masterful way. when i first read this book i found it annoying and difficult, much the same way i thought of ulysses when i first read it, but after reading bernhard's other works i was free to consider it a masterpeice. something that deserves work and is rewarding. one of my all time favorites.

Thus Roithamer
Bernhard's novel "Correction" tells us the story of two friends. The main character, Roithamer, commit suicide (as we know from the first page of the book) and his friend (the person who tells the story) take charge of his legacy: A huge mass of calculations and thinkings about the construction of a Cone (in the center of a forest called Kobernauss) for the "supreme happiness" of Roithamer' sister (who is expected to dwell in it). Following this main idea Bernhard writes a superb novel dealing with the loneliness of an exceptional man in a stupid, brutal and destructive society that consider mad to those people with true artistic and intellectual interests. Strong thoughts and strong beauty are the main virtues of this book. I have read almost all the works by Thomas Bernhard and this one, I think, is the kernel of all his production. It is, maybe, his greatest masterpiece (in narrative) besides his five-volume autobiography. We encounter, here, for example, that wild irony and humour of his plays for the scene and all his personal universe and obsessions.
I will say nothing of Mdme.Wilkins translation as I think that there is no alternative for reading this novel in English. Translating Bernhard is very difficult. Long sentences, with periodic and obsessive motives which repeat and repeat producing an amazing and incredible effect. Bernhard is a master of rhythm and precision and his style is a musical one.

With special attention to the Cone.
This novel is essentially about a man (two men, really, in sequence although at times it feels like the narrator is of one piece) in a little dark room who cannot turn his brain off and has an incessant need to share it with you (the reader). I found the passage about the stuffing of the big black bird to be incredibly hilarious. People who aspire to be well-read must put Thomas Bernhard on the top of their reading list. Adjectives like obsession and neurotic don't do this particular book justice. I've read most of Bernhard's books (as translated in English) and this is certainly one of his strongest. I recommend this book to everyone -- graduate students, widows, orphans, the mentally ill, little children. Five stars absolutely.

The Infernal
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Orion Publishing Group (11 March, 1999)
Author: Kim Wilkins
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

New take on dark horror.
I ordered this book from Amazon because it looked very interesting and this book and this book did not fail me.Kim is a very detailed author but she also can bring horror to a very creepy level. It took me a while to get into her rythme and her style but once I got past figuring out who was who I enjoyed it very much.Lisa is a young reincarnation of Elizabeth a witch who was a young friend to Gilbert a very powerful warlock or wizard, who reincarnated person is David who kidnapped Karin his young pregnant wife and was torturing her. The story gradually built up to a very satisfying and horrifying conclusion that left me wanting more. I really felt for Mirabel because she died never knowing if her baby girl ever knew the whole story, and also for Liam, Lisa's boyfriend who left Lisa never knowing what Lisa had been suffering. This book was, but depressing because everyone was alone, dead and suffering. I would like Kim to write a sequel to this book.

Dark, goth fable
If you happen to like Poppy Brite and Caitlin Kiernan, don't miss this one. Kim Wilkin's first oeuvre (winner of the Australian Aurealis awards for best horror and best fantasy novel) stars Lisa, the gother-than-goth, prettier-than-pretty leader of a Sisters Of Mercy-like band who gets caught in a dark spiral of gory murders and erotic obsessions. Has Lisa made a pact with Ole Scratch himself? I'm not gonna spill the beans: just read The Infernal and find out for yourself. A dark, chilling, goth fable not to be missed. Why didn't it find an American publisher? Jeez...

Infernally Good
I agree with the other reviewer! This is one of my fav horror books. Great to see a female heroine. Even better to have a double narrative which keeps the reader poised waiting to switch back a few hundred years. The pace of the novel is perfect. If you like Laruell Hamilton's Anita Blake vampire books then try this one--this heroine's a lot more believable...
