A nice romance book for young ladies
DeLanna has endured much from her mother and is now ready to start life on her own. As per usual, Nancy has given us another good book to read and keep us interested all the time. It's not easy to put the book down. Just keep the series going!!!

A charming courtship for DeLanna
It was wonderful to read a teenage love story that was based on friendship and mutual respect. Although DeLanna seems to live a charmed life in many respects, she is unsatisfied with her endless limitations. Andrew too, is limited, but by money and social standing. They find what they need and want in each other. No longer alone, they set off on a journey toward a new life together.

Great Series!!
Once you start the Apple Valley series, make sure that you have all of the books on hand because you'll want to read the next one as soon as you finish reading the one before! Note to Ms. Smith: Thank you and please get busy, I'm waiting for the rest of the series!

Status Report
Though this little booklet may soon be overtaken by events, it's a fine reality check for where we are at the moment. As Chang makes clear, Patriot Act I renders the Fourth Amendment meaningless, at the same time it strips non-citizens of due process and constitutional guarantees. And though the text does at times read like a legal brief, the details are provided in succinct fashion that should alarm anyone concerned with safeguards against tyranny, whatever the source. Moreover, the threat promises to worsen as Ashcroft readies a sequel to PAI, further blurring the line between dissent and terrorism. Despite appearances, this is not a partisan issue. We all stand to lose unless we stand up for constitutional government and the right to dissent. Chang's represents a handy and inexpensive status report, that should be the duty of every citizen to read and act on.

Steven King Doesn't Have Anything On This
If you're in the mood for a good scare, this will do you. It's amazing how fragile our liberties are, and how one little decision can place them in harm's way.

I definantly recommend this, regardless of the current climates, for a better understanding of the ways our liberties have been abused in the past, and how easily our privacy can be invaded without our even knowing.

Excellent concise summary
Nancy Chang's concise summary of post 9/11 developments is an excellent primer on how dissent has been repressed and silenced in the name of anti-terrorism and how "patriotism" has been twisted into something resembling a Mccarthyite witch-hunt. She focuses on the USA PATRIOT Act, and her legal analysis of the profound unconstitutionality of some of its provisions is chilling. Her legal analysis is acute and accurate (she is the senior litigation lawyer with the Center for Constitutional Rights in NYC). Among other things, attorney-client communications are now being monitored if the client is suspected or accused of "terrorist" activities. The term "terrorism" has been so expanded and amplified by this Act as to make it applicable to many activities not normally considered to be within its ambit, as Ms. Chang details. This is a timely, up-to-the-minute introduction, and urgent reading for everyone concerned with the assault on civil rights now taking place in the guise of fighting "terrorism."

Wonderful for anyone wanting to learn to read the cards
This book has a terrific approach to reading the cards, discover for yourself what they mean. Rather then a list of "this card means this, that card means that." This book allows the reader the time to develop a real relationship with the cards. The cards will only have meaning for a reader who takes time to get to know them, and this book is helpful.

Set up has a workbook; the student of tarot works one card at a time to really understand that card in depth. The only way to learn to read.

There is also help understanding where the cards came from, how to find a deck, how to create a spread, and how to put it all together. If you want to learn to read tarot, this is the book for you.

WOW !!! A MUST READ
It is an easy read, very informative, insightful and thought provoking. If you wish to know ask Nancy.
Anyone interested in Tarot must have this book in their library

Thought Provoking
I have to say this is a great book. It forces you to think about what the card means to you. Most books just give interpretations. I highly recommend this book.

Sensible Suggestions
I thoroughly enjoyed reading DOUBLE MENOPAUSE by Dr. Nancy Cetel. It was comforting to know that there is solid information about the next phase of life for me. Being prepared for some of the possible effects of changing hormone levels will only make the transition easier.
The book was well written and interesting. I especially appreciated the chapter entitled THE TRUTH ABOUT ANTI-AGING. I agree with Dr. Cetel's philosophy about the aging process and found her advice for maximizing longevity very helpful.

Double Menopause
An excellent resource for women and men to assist in understanding the ebb and flow of hormonal change during midlife. The effect of such changes on both the psychological and physical domains are discussed. The time during which these hormonal changes occur can become extremely trying and tumultuous for individuals and their partners. This book addresses ways to assess the changes that are occurring and approaches to managing them. Double Menopause speaks well to a complex phenomena and simplifies it. This is a unique resource for men and women whose lives are affected, directly or indirectly, by menopausal or andropausal changes.

A Great Read!
This is not only a very informative book, but an enjoyable read. Dr. Cetel is a great communicator. I knew a lot about perimenopausal symptoms but knew relatively little until now of the hormone-related changes a middle-aged husband would also be experiencing. Dr. Cetel gives clear, practical advice on what women and men can say and do that will ease and support the other's experience. Her "tips" for reconnecting with your partner and achieving greater intimacy in mid-life ("hormonal harmony") are quite actionable and fun (I've tried several already with good results.) I also liked her advice for an overall healthy lifestyle. This may be the one book on menopause your husband will want to read. I highly recommend it if you're committed to your marital relationship lasting and growing.

Probably the best thing available in this field
I consider Severa's work to be of great potential use to any family researcher who has ever stared at an unidentified family photograph and wondered just when and where it was taken. For, unless one descends from a famous family, such images are likely to be distressingly anonymous. As with any type of historical research, searching out the context can greatly increase one's chances -- and in a photo, while the countryside and the buildings may not change, the clothing of the subjects almost certainly will. Even those expert in other areas of historical knowledge often make mistakes in interpreting the depicted garments of ordinary people. Or not so ordinary: The author describes several misinterpretations even of Paul Revere's clothing in the famous John Singleton Copley portrait. And Severa, as probably the leading historian of American costume, is certainly the best possible author for a massive study like this. Each chapter covers one decade of the 19th century since the practical introduction of photography, including first a discussion of general trends and the effects of manufacturing innovations and social influences, and then examining and discussing a large number of specific individual and group portraits of farmers, families, children, shop girls, and soldiers in considerable detail. This isn't "just" a reference guide, though, but a fully realized history and the reader not only will learn about the details of American dress but also will acquire a number of new insights in historical method.

A Photographic Treat
If you like looking at old photographs with haunting, austere faces staring out from stilled figures in 19th-century garb, this book is worth every penny. The photos in this volume are incredibly evocative and encompass a wide range of people from various walks of life. The photos are nicely presented, with one large picture per page accompanied by an extensive caption that explains the clothing/fashion details reflected in the picture. This is one of those books that I return to again and again because I love what it does to my imagination, in terms of stimulating my ideas regarding both Victorian-era costuming and a way of life that is long since vanished.

Absolutely incomparable!
I have never seen a more complete book for the fashion history enthusiast. Thick and heavy with loads of black and white photographs, detailed descriptions of the photos, and a decade-by-decade listing of the fashions of the time (womens clothing and undergarments, childrens' wear, mens' wear, and even shoes and hats are included!).

A true gem sure to keep the reader entranced for hours at a time...

Psychoanalytic Diagnosis: Understanding Personality Structure in the Clinical Process

AN Important Addition To The Psychological Literature
This book offers a welcome and much needed alternative to the dogma-bound DSM used in psychiatry and psychology. It gives a theory-driven alternative that is elegant and can be applied to virtually any of the interpersonal and emotional problems mental health practitioners treat. McWilliams' use of a continuum of characterology, ranging from flexible to symptomatic to persistent to severe makes intuitive sense. The categories she describes will be familiar to anyone with a clinical background and again are resonant with common experience.

Two concerns: her use of "Borderline" is inconsistent throughout the book, used at times to denote a range between neurotic and psychotic and other times as a type, as in BPD. She inaccurately claims that the DSM uses BPD as a degree rather than type, when in fact it one of the several "clusters" of personality disorders, each distinct in presentation. My suggestion is to go with her psychological approach and eliminate the vague word "Borderline" altogether. Replace it with characterological and take Vaillant's advice to forget the "kitchen sink" BPD.

The other concern regards the Dissociative type of pathology. McWilliams ignores her own elegant heuristic when presenting these difficulties. She loses track of the neurotic-characterological-psychotic spectrum in which this type of pathology can present. A close reading of this section of the book suggests revisions for the next edition, which I hope will be forthcoming, as this is a wonderful text to use with students learning about so-called abnormal psychology.

Soon to be a classic...
This text should be a staple item in the library of any aspiring dynamic therapist. Lucidly written and well-organized.

Best text Ive read in a long time!!
If only every textbook was so well written and insightful. I would reccommend it to anyone studying psychology. It should be required reading for anyone pursuing the field of psychotherapy. I savored every last word.

An interesting and thought-provoking text.
The four authors present five epistemologies compiled from a detailed analysis of interviews conducted with 135 women over the course of several years. The interview subjects varied in their educational experience, age, ethnicity, and economic background. The authors present their findings in succinct chapters with numerous subheadings for easy reading. Citations include works by Jean Piaget, Carol Gilligan, William Perry, L. Kohlberg and many other well-known names in educational research.

A refreshing point of view
Starting from the awareness that much of the way education (both formal and informal) is carried out in society is very male-dominated and the voice and experience of women is largely absent, Belenky and her co-authors make a case for examining ways of knowing and learning that is unique to women. The authors recognise early differences in studies that have included women as a primary or central focus, such as those of Carol Gilligan. One strong tendency of women's ways of knowing in these early studies is the presence of responsibility and connectedness that significantly exceeds those of men. After exploring different aspects of knowledge and how women come to acquire, use, produce, and disseminate this knowledge, the authors work to put these insights in context for the family and academia. The authors work largely in the area of developing for women a means of gaining a greater sense of self (also see Howard Gardner's section on personal intelligence in his book, Frames of Mind). This sense of self enables women to construct meaning for themselves, and find their own voices for both teaching and learning.

Perhaps one criticism I would hold is that, while this work looks at women's experience, it still seems to remain very Euro-centric. I am reminded of the arguments of black women against feminist theological processes, which led to the development of womanist theological discourse.

Recently I received an email from a friend with a link to an on-line quiz, which was attempting in a Turing-machine sort of way to be able to determine one's gender from the answers given to a set of questions. As I was taking the test, I thought about it in the context of women's ways of knowing and learning, and realised that this test was very objective, non-connected, largely non-feeling, and very masculine in approach. Certainly this test did not have the kind of objectivity called for in the text. 'Objectivity in connected teaching, as in connected knowing, means seeing the other, the student, in the student's own terms.' (p. 224) This test was seeing everyone in terms of a standard model, a model derived from male-dominant considerations.

For the sake of liturgy and learning, which is my particular field of study, and the purpose behind reading this book, the kinds of issues raised here are important. The authors begin with the idea of silence. This is not a silence like monastic silence or the silence between prayers, hymns and readings, but rather a silence of voices from the shaping and practice of the community. Too often liturgy is viewed, by laity and clergy, as something handed to them from 'authority' with little or no room for adaptation or adjustment to context. When liturgical practice becomes this rigid or this 'unlistening', it can cease to have any many or validity for the community of worshippers.

The authors also develop ideas of received, subjective and procedural knowledge, all of which can be used in liturgical practice. There can be, particularly in my prayer-book-heavy tradition, a tendency to emphasise received knowledge and some aspects of procedural knowledge, while confining other types of knowledge to secondary or tertiary roles in the liturgy. Dialogue sermons and opening up the participation to others can enhance the service, broadening it to other forms of learning styles.

Applying the principles of connected teaching to liturgy can have important results. 'Connected teachers try to discern the truth inside the students.' (p. 223) Perhaps this same kind of constructed style of shaping the liturgy to be more inclusive, more sensitive to the voices of the members of the community while still paying respect to the overall shape and intention of the community, can lead to greater connectivity of the community amongst itself, and of the community members to the experience of the liturgy.

Overall, this book can yield insights into many types of practices, learning, and knowledge. While it does not constitute the final word on intelligence by any means, it is a valuable conversation partner.

Women's Ways of Knowing
As a grad student exploring women and adult education, this book provided a great jumping off point! It does not compare and contrast male and female learning, which would suggest one is superior. Rather, it thoroughly explores different styles in which women acquire knowledge, and the value they place on learning. It also gives adult educators of women many ideas for enhancing the learning environment, whether single or mixed gender.I recommend Hayes & Flannery's Women as Learners as follow-up reading!

Targeted for high-caliber, self-motivated player
A really good book for a select audience. For younger players or those not motivated enough to focus their energy and effort at this level, I highly recommend the two companion VHS tapes on offense and defense/rebounding. However, if you are a middle or high-school player who really wants to raise your game, you can't go wrong here.

One of the best basketball books out there
I have been coaching girls basketball for the last several
years and am often looking for suitable books to give my
players to help them work on their own to further develop
their skills. This is the best book I have seen for a junior
high or high school player. I covers every aspect of the game,
not just skills, but also physical training.

A Must for Coaches of Girls Basketball
When I started coaching girls basketball (3rd-9th graders) 3 years ago this was the second book I picked up. Now I have about 35 books and 20 videos but I use this as the central reference for my playbook and training manual in coaching fundamentals. Some of the skills may be too advanced for younger kids but they will grow up and adapt to it when they return to you a little older and better skilled thanks to this reference. It should be used in conjunction with the videos by the author (available also from Amazon). If Nancy Lieberman-Cline ever sponsors a clinic I will be on the first plane to get there. As a player-coach-teacher she is the best for girls basketball!

Easy HTML instructions
I had had already read two "online auctions made easy" type books before I bought this one. The others covered a lot of the basics but did not deal with HTML. I wanted to add "class" to my auctions and HTML was what I thought I needed and was confused on why these other books did not even mention the issue--I thought maybe it was too complicated??? Then I came across this book, it provided an extremely clear and easy walk through of the HTML language. There are even a few templates that I was able to examine and then adapted one for my own use. If a simple introduction to HTML is what you are after look no further...

The Best Blueprint Around for Understanding Online Auctions!
I found this book to contain the best and most conscise information on how to host an online auction. From start to finish, Nancy Hix guides you through every step with ease. Her advice is very easy to understand and follow. Being new to the whole internet auction experience, this book anwered numerous questions and enabled me to glide through auction sites very quickly. Her detailed descriptions of exactly how to host your own auction proved invaluable. If you are interested in learning about Online Auctions sites, or hosting your own auction, this book will get you started with confidence.

Great html advice for sellers too!
I've read every word in this book and highly recommend it as an clear explanation of the how-to's of ethical buying and selling via online auctions.

Personally, as a seller on various online auctions, I found the html info and templates explained in the back of the book to be most helpful!
