a guide for making life work
Joanne Papper is a first rate storyteller. In her first endeavor, Easier Said Than Done, she relates with pure emotional honesty how challenges in her own life were met and overcome with life-affirming grace and dignity. No one ever said that life is easy. A reading of Ms. Papper's account confirms life's heartache, unpredictability, and ultimately: joy. An affirmation to the human spirit which recognizes, deep within, that all is well...and that faith can always triumph over fear. Written in a voice that is clear, understandable and empathic. Highly recommended and sure to bring hope and comfort. Well-worth reading...& re- reading.

Excellent insight to realtionships and loss
Joanne Papper's book, "Easier Said Than Done" offers guidance and answers in dealing with many of life's problems. The book has a "Chicken Soup" flavor, so to speak, but with a refreshing, focused point of view. I highly reccommend this book to everyone. It would be a great gift for anyone dealing with personal loss or relationship problems.

Forgotten Hero
Everyone has heard of Martin Luther King, but few remember what Ella Baker did. Baker helped to develop the civil rights movement by working at the grass roots level with the NAACP and SCLC but, since she worked outside of the spotlight, she has received little credit for her accomplishments. Known to most activists of the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, Baker is well-deserving of a biography and this is particularly well-written one. More information about her private life could have been included though.

Ms. Ella Baker - the heart & soul of the movement
More than any other single figure, Ella Baker represents the heart and soul of the civil rights movement at its highest and best. Starting earlier than most any other central leader, Ms. Baker was instrumental in sparking more of the major events in civil rights history than any other. Yet always working as the behind the scenes organizer and pushing others forward, particularly grassroots and youthful leaders, Ms. Baker is probably the least known outside the movement. No more important task exists than preserving her memory and Joanne Grant has done an excellent job in this important book. Even insiders will be surprised at what they'll learn in this comprehensive account. A great followup to Joanne's earlier documentary: Fundi - The Life of Ella Baker. Ms. Baker is universally revered among movement people for her wisdom, courage and acute political analysis that taught and guided thousands. Truly she was as close to a real saint as this world produces and to! ! uched her times in the most redemptive and revolutionary way.

Building a life of confident learning...
"Raising a child is the most important job you'll ever have." ~Rob Reiner

The First Years is a book that was created in conjunction with I Am Your Child, a national organization that focuses on raising public awareness about the importance of learning during the first three years of a child's life.

The contents include:

Getting to know me: birth to nine months
I can do it myself: 9-18 months
On my way: 18-36 months

During the first three years of a child's life there is so much more going on than just the physical/visual development. What is going on in a child's mind? Are they developing a healthy self-esteem and a positive attitude towards learning?

Are you sure your baby feels loved and secure? They discuss the myth about not picking up your infant when he/she cries too much. I have always wondered about this aspect, because I think it is natural for a mother to want to comfort an infant who is crying and it seems unnatural to leave a child crying for ages in a crib when you are who they depend on. This book also tells you that it is normal for babies to cry for certain periods of time during various stages.

Some of the highlights include: The advantages of Breast feeding, Establishing Routines, How Babies Communicate and a discussion about how you can encourage your baby to communicate with you through "self-talk."

I also enjoyed the section on: Why Babies Cry and what to do about it, Understanding your child's unique temperament, Teaching self-discipline, Language and Learning, Play Time, Childproofing the house, The stage from crawling to walking and how to deal with crib-climbers.

Questions they answer include:

What causes colic and what is the normal duration of crying?
When do babies begin talking?
Why do children bite?
How can I prevent tantrums?
How do you provide your child with the best nutrition?
How often should you visit the doctor?
Will you ever get enough sleep again?
What do I do when my baby won't stop crying?
Is baby talk ok?

This guide will encourage you to make the most of those first few years that can be so crucial to your child's development. Knowing about each stage of our baby's development makes it a bit easier to meet your baby's needs.

Great book & resource!
I just looked at this book while attending a national conference on child development. This would make a great gift for new or expectant parents. It is well wriiten and very easy to follow.

incredible mind!
i saw the exihibit of his work at the museum of modern art in S.F. it was magnificent! i could have spent days going over all the detail - i got so engrossed in every detail of his work and writings about his life..that i went back a second day ....what a sad and wonderful life this man had.

Rizzoli one of the great artists of the 20th century.
In terms of originality, vision, skill, and dedication A.G. Rizzoli may eventually stand as one of the true masters of the 20th century. An extravagant claim, perhaps, but when I compare Rizzoli with Picasso, Dali, Klee, Miro, or Duchamp I cannot help but feel that they would have all welcomed him into their august company as a true original who has expanded the creative realm of possibilites in art. Of equal interest is the manner in which Rizzoli, faced with a desolate life of lonliness due to his inability to function in a social realm, or for that matter a sexual one, took these circumstances and created an alternate reality of sublime beauty and wonder. This superb book allows all of us to share in this utopian vision and, for at least a little while, daydream, ponder, and wonder at this remarkable vision of an alternate reality. The authors, curators and restorers who have brought Rizzoli's life work to light are to be highly commended as preserving and exposing this incredible and wonderful work.

Great!
This book is awsome! I have a group of friends where we get together and make these projects. They have easy things and some really hard things. And they have this really cool journal thing that you can hold pictures and stickers in it.

A fab craft book for girls of all ages!
This book is awesome because it is filled with chic and clever easy-to-make projects for girls of all ages. Not only does it feature projects that promote self esteem and creativity, it also is a fun read with plenty of humorous and whimsical graphics and such. I have a nine year old daughter and we were pouring over the chapters choosing which projects we are going to make together. Even if you don't have a young girl in the house, the ideas can be altered to fit any personality. I highly recommend this book!

Has A Child Been Molested?

The Question is more Important than the Answer
"Has a Child Been Molested" belongs in every criminal defense lawyer's library if you are going to represent clients accused of child molesting. This book will educate the attorney to be aware of issues and problems that are unique to these cases and that without the insights of Dr. Coleman and Mr. Clancy one can easily overlook to the client's ultimate detriment. The highest compliment I can pay to the book and its authors is that it made me a better lawyer and allowed me to represent my clients more effectively. As a criminal defense lawyer with over 20 years of experience, I can strongly recommend Dr. Coleman as a powerful expert witness for the defense in child sexual abuse cases. His testimony on issues such as suggestability of child witnesses, syndrome evidence, an rebutting false claims of physical evidence of abuse is absolutely necessary if these cases are to be presented effectively and fairly to juries. This book covers all the major issues of mental health, medicine, and interview techniques that constantly appear in child molest cases. The book points out how doctors and therapists have been corrupted to apply their professional expertise in the name of saving the abused child based on the presumption that "children never lie" about these things. Dr. Coleman and Mr. Clancy point out how this movement to save the children got started and how it has been allowed to run wild through our criminal justice system. More importantly, they provide information and guidance that will allow the reader to understand what is happening and how to prevent the misuse of medicine and psychiatry in the courtroom. Anyone truly interested in seeing the truth come out in a courtroom cannot afford to ignore this truly important work.

Extremely helpful for an understanding of the problem
Dr.Coleman's book provided me valuable insight while I was involved in the difficult task of representing a client accused of molesting his 9 year old daughter. The unfair investigative techniques and psychiatric myths foisted upon our juries in these cases are unravelled by Dr. Coleman's careful analysis of the issues. The straightforward explanantions by Dr. Coleman make this book a must for every lawyer defending these difficult cases. DAN BURLAND Esq. San Jose CA

Bold and daring! Very highly recommended
Incensed that she has been demoted from M.C. to jailer for the charity auction, Lexi Mansfield still maintains her indomitable style despite the whispers and rumors behind her back. One of New York's leading fashion reviewers and most popular magazine columnists, Lexi has been humiliated an extremely uncomplimentary letter to the editor. Then she jails a dangerous looking cop, blowing his cover and later allowing their "two night stand" to break all her rules. But Lexi is an all or nothing kind of girl, and cannot settle for a guy who offers to paint her poodle's nails in private but cannot appear at her side in public.

Josh Winger attends the charity auction for work, not pleasure. For two months he and his partner have tracked drug smuggling activity in the Garment District without success. His bad boy looks, scars and diamond stud make him look more like the criminal element than the establishment. But when a "kinky dominatrix with killer cleavage and a lethal attitude" blows his cover, Josh finds the promise of handcuffs and anonymous sex in the dark wildly erotic. When morning comes, he also finds that a single night of hot pursuit is not enough to satisfy the delicious hunger Lexi inspires. Then they realize that that their best friends are getting married, and neither can simply walk away from their wild night.

Once again author Joanna Rock demonstrates her sophisticated flair for presenting the unusual and the decadent in her newest release, IN HOT PURSUIT. A remarkably fun plot matches her flair for erotic characterizations with subtle depth. Lexi and Josh are not insecure characters waiting to be "fixed" or "saved". These are intelligent, independent people who suddenly realize their lives lack that special spark the other possesses, even as their careers and goals take them separate directions. Like so many modern couples, only compromise and open communication will salvage a relationship thus far built on the fire of passion. Very highly recommended.

Joanne Rock delivers another stellar read!
IN HOT PURSUIT captured my attention from the get-go with its sparkling writing and standout characters. Josh and Lexi positively pop right off the pages with their snappy dialogue and sizzling chemistry. Then there's a cool mystery woven in as well ... wow! Steam, suspense and fabulous characters - IN HOT PURSUIT has it all! I'm already counting the days until Joanne Rock's next release!

THE INVISIBLE WOMAN: GENDER,CRIME, AND JUSTICE (CONTEMPORARY
The Invisible Woman...was a required text in a college course I attended at San Francisco State University. I found it to be very helpful in understanding complex issues surrounding women and the criminal injustice system.

Further, the book discusses issues surrounding the condition of women in relation to race, class, gender and political economy that many texts fail to disect honestly and realistically. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in educating themselves or others to the trails and tribulations women encure within the criminal injustice system!

Great book for studying women in criminal justice
I used this book for a college course and it was very easy to read, easy to understand, and held my attention. It's the first time I've wanted to read my school books! It was great about teaching specific statistics of women offenders, women victims, and professional women working in the criminal justice system. Highly recommended for any student studying criminal justice or anyone interested in the topic.

Leah/Seymour Epstein
Like Jackie Dial, I'm still moved by "Leah." I met Seymour Epstein only once, 1n 1978, after he awarded my first novel first place in a national writing contest. I loved his books and felt as if he were writing what Roth wanted to. Like Jackie, I'd like to know if the other Seymour is a junior and if/what Seymour senior is writing today. bhearn@pacbell.net

Superior psychological profiles
I found this book in my old bedroom while engaging in a hankering for fiction. It more than met my expectations, which had been somewhat blunted by a recent diet of newspaper articles and science fiction. The author not only handles words enticingly, in the manner of one who expects literacy of his readers; he adds such dimension to characters that one can no longer countenance the 2D variety that so often passes for adequacy in these times. I salute his talent, and also wonder if he is the same as (or the father of) Seymour Epstein, the cognitive psychologist. --an admiring psychologist

The story of Leo the MGM lion and his trainer Volney
God bless Joanne Rains for writing this fascinating book which covers a chapter of American History which MGM does not want to
talk about.. That is the story about Volney Phifer of 197 Morristown Road in Gillette, NJ. The most famous animal ever to be born rests under a large pine tree with no monument next to
the first Cheetah the Chip from Tarzan. Both are silent
reminders of a working farm that use to supply Broadway
with some very famous animals. Volney's life is told
in this wonderful book. Hopefully this book will lead to
a monument worthy of the historic nature of Volney , Leo and
Cheetah the chimp.

After you read it, you can ask MGM why they would not donate
one DIME towards the saving of the farm or the grave.

There have been other Leo's.. but the first one is buried here
in Long Hill Township, NJ.

A little-known, yet unforgettable book!
I came across this book and absolutely loved it! The autobiography charts an American family's gripping saga through the Great Depression and World War II. The author skillfully interweaves her family's story into the broader historical context. Hence, the book succeeds both as a compelling record of her family's struggles and an insightful study of down-at-heel America. The story achieves almost epic proportions, spanning several decades. Yet, the characters are always approachable and portrayed empathetically. The book is richly brought to life by marvelous historical photos, from the front jacket through to the end. I cannot recommend "Looking for the Lights & the Music" enough! This unknown, first-time author has scored a can't-put-down winner. Be prepared to laugh, and cry, throughout this poignant, but ultimately redemptive odyssey.
