TRue Bedroom STories
No, women were far from powerless in Venice during the late Renaissance, and this book tells you how. This author had a field day in Venetian church archives. She was the first one to read transcripts of real cases in what then was the only "divorce" court. Graphic details make this an enjoyable -- and convincing -- read.
But Ferraro is also a first-rate historian, and presents strong evidence that women of high and low classes did use this church court to get either an annulment (which allowed them to re-marry) or "separate bed and board" which at least allowed them to get away from an abusive spouse.
This book is a pioneering study and should appeal not only to historians, but to sociologists, psychologists, and to any literate person interested in peering into a previously hidden corner of the past.

"Mommy, I'm Scared": How TV and Movies Frighten Children and What We Can Do to Protect Them

This is Must Read material for parents
I was not prepared for what I learned when I read this book. Dr. Cantor is very forthright in telling parents and caregivers the effects of television and movies on children. She reminds us that very young children process the world in a very different way from adults, and we, as adults, have to be very aware of that difference as we choose TV shows and Movies for our kids. She herself was surprised by some of the results of her research, and that honesty was refreshing.

Most interesting to me was the fact that some of these events were singular, ie, happened once, and the now-college aged students remember vividly their fear and their reactions to their exposure to certain shows.

It makes me, as a parent, realize that it is up to ME to serve as the filter through which my children's TV and Movie choices come. If I don't protect them, no one else will.

With the movie and TV ratings guided more by the bottom line than than a concern for our children's emotional welfare, it is even more vital that all parents become aware and actively involved in their kids' viewing habits.

I highly recommend it, but you may not like the conclusions you will probably draw from it. As for us, the tube is off, for now.

Throrough and Fun!
I also own the Pennsylvania Handbook by the same author, and I'm continually amazed by her ability to search out the odd little museums and restaurants that really make a destination unique. In Maryland, you can polka the night away after visiting an out-of-the-way military code museum. And, I enjoy the sly humor that kind of sneaks up on you: "In the film Star Wars, Luke was misdirected when he was told to beware The Dockside. This friendly, casual restaurant...is a good place for inexpensive meals from breakfast ($5) through dinner ($6-9). Lots of Crisfield watermen eat here." (from the Eastern Shore section). Like all Moon Handbooks, this one makes the ordinary come alive, covers the whole area extremely well, and is fun to read.

A book that touches the essence of fatherhood
In this book, where a young father shows his garden world to his daughter, one touches both the magical and the spiritual. Neither is mentioned, but both are there in the rich prose and wonderful paintings. The children I watched hearing it were caught up in the magic and the wonder of the discoveries. And they were quiet with my tears when I read of the dirt that never quite ever washed off the young father's hands. I was remembering my own father's hands that never quite ever lost that earthy stain. Would that every father-to-be recieve a copy of this work that exemplifies the ultimate essence of fatherhood - that "nothing in my father's hands would ever hurt me."
