Best All Around Marin Guide
Other guides to Marin may focus entirely on hiking, or biking, or history--this one actually includes all those things, plus reviews of restaurants, places to stay, and things to do (including shopping) that others leave out. Because the book covers a lot of topics of interest to visitors, you'd expect the reviews of hikes and restaurants to be too brief, which isn't the case at all. You'll get to know the county like a native.

Have a Bear of a Good Time.....
The sun sets, the moon rises, and here come the bears, arriving on foot through the forest and in brightly colored hot air balloons. "A broad-beamed caller/howdys all:/Welcome, friends,/to our Big Bear Ball." The music plays, the bears begin to dance, and a rip-roarin'good time is had by all. "Small bears sway/and slap your paws./Tall bears stomp/and pop your jaws.// Two paws up,/waving high./Catch some stars/and scratch the sky." And as the celebration moves through the forest, moles and foxes are awakened and join in, frogs jump up and sing along, and even an old alligator joins all the fun.....Joanne Ryder's engaging text begs to be read aloud, is filled with rhythm, rhyme, energy and motion, and complemented by Steven Kellogg's bold, vibrant and expressive artwork. Eye-popping illustrations dazzle with bright colors, marvelous facial expressions, and woodland detail that is sure to captivate little ones as they linger before turning the page. Together word and art create an entertaining and joyous, finger-snapping, toe-tapping romp. Perfect for preschoolers, Big Bear Ball is a winner, and a picture book kids will want to read again and again. "Go lightly, sprightly,/on your way./May you dance/with the music/as we welcome the day. // Farewell one!/Farewell all!/See you next full moon/at our Big Bear Ball."

Billie Jean King: Tennis Trailblazer
First of all, I am not 9-12 or even 18 and I know it has been stated that this is the recommended age range for this book - I am well into my 40's and in fact was one of those people who watched and held my breath through the entire King/Riggs match. Rooting for Billie Jean as a teenage girl was risking disfavor with any male prospects one might have had...and as alot of us put it on the line in support of her taking the challenge - she vindicated us all with that win and the continuing bravery she has shown in being who she is for all to see. You don't have to be an adolescent to appreciate this book and the life it chronicles - in following her heart and winning she gave the rest of us courage to follow ours. This book is more than a biography - its a reminder to all of us - young and old - that courage and integrity are built a day at a time...this book helps us to look back over Billie Jean's shoulder to mark the path of a hero. Excellent read, indelible memory.

This is a quietly beautiful and fascinating story
This is a quietly beautiful and fascinating story--a work of scholarship and a work of love. Joanne Mulcahy has written a stunning book about Mary Peterson, a remarkable woman, and about the cultural revival that both Mary and the author played crucial roles in bringing about. It is something few Americans know anything about--and all of us should.

For bibliophiles and students of publishing history
Very highly recommended and informative reading for bibliophiles and students of publishing history, British Wood-engraved Book Illustration 1904-1940: A Break With Tradition by Joanna Selborne is a simply fascinating look at a unique graphic art and an historically important aspect of publishing history -- the art and practice wood-engraved book illustration. At Last Bryher's first Novels in Print again!
I am thrilled that this title is finally available. It consists of the first two novels by the British author known as Bryher. An amazing and under appreciated author, philanthropist, educator and more. The two novels are "Development" which has been called "the story of the artist as young dyke" and "Two Selves" a coded-lesbian love story.

"Development" first published in 1920 is a quixotic look in to the mind of a young woman who yearns to write but is hampered by family, decade, class and gender. It includes moving descriptions of why she feels that she is really a boy, her longing for adventure and desire to run away to the sea. It is an uneven book and barely a novel, but historically significant with beautiful passages on childhood and an essay on color-hearing.

Her second novel "Two Selves" first published in 1924 is a true gem. It follows Nancy from the isolation of Developement through her intense longing for a friend who will understand and climaxes with the meeting with "the poet". Historically the book describes Bryher's first meeting with the American poet H.D. (Hilda Doolittle, whom she supported emotionally and financially til death did them part -- And whose daughter she adopted and co-parented). The language, especially in the final passages, is simply beautiful.

See also her post-World War II historical novels: Gate to the Sea, Ruan, The Player's Boy, etc. -- Out of print but available in many libraries -- and her memoirs "A Heart to Artemis" and "Days of Mars."

missing details
I was a little disappointed with this book. I got much more out of an old, old, old canning book I picked up at a garage sale. You'll miss a lot of important details and trouble shooting if your are just starting out canning/jam making and this is your only reference.

GREAT RESOURCE
Being a beginner canner, I have picked up many canning books, this is an excellent book. The book is organized well, and has great tips in each section. It offers information on all types of preserving and storing, from the canning to root cellering, it has been an extremly helpfull book. I know it is a reference I will use forever. Also includes many great recipes.I suggest this for anyone who is interested in canning.
