Irigaray's most beautiful writings
The prose of Irigaray unsettles the calm assuredness with which the realms of spirituality and the feminine have so often been rendered as subjects without agency, the weaker and subordinate opposite of material, tangible reality. Irigaray demonstrates how to dislodge, disrupt, and destabilize the barriers founded by certain academic standards. She dares to use words to describe the futility of words.
"...if your words have such seductive power, such a potent charge of investment, is it not because they come to fill the place of a desire deprived of words? Borrowing their strength from energy free from any declaration. A fundamental misunderstanding lies within your language: what it carries of persuasive power does not belong to speech but to what it covers in silence."(36)
Another way Irigaray problematizes the othering of the spirit world is through exploding linear, normative conceptions of time and space in her reconstruction of infinity. She speaks of the current model of time as something which holds power by relying on a timeless void as its opposite. She defies this dualistic construction, describing not an abyss which relies on fullness and definition, but a fullness so vast it has the capacity to lodge emptiness within it.
"That invisible presence bearing you, supporting you there where you set up an opposing illusion of indifference as limit to your own desire. As a stasis at each point, guarding against the risk of overflowing which would lead to your downfall. Your vanishing into the immense space where you place that void which maintains your coherence." (Passions, 20)
This book is a delightful contrast to the cold, hard and cerebral discourse most noted for contemporary theories of psychology, philosophy, feminism, and politics!

Emily's House

Authors: Niko Scharer and Joanne Fitzgerald
Amazon base price: $10.95

Adorable!
My infant, Emily, received this as a baby gift. It is so adorable (even for a child not named Emily!). The rhymes and story are whimsical, but the message, really, is that life is all about how you look at things. I plan to read this book with her throughout her childhood. And I will definitely be giving this darling book as a baby gift in the future.

My daughter's favorite book
This book is my daughter, Emily's, favorite book. It has been a bedtime regular since she was 2.(she is now 6) The wonderful poetic pace increases the excitement as Emily's house becomes filled with animals and more and more noise. My children love making the animal noises and sharing in Emily's frustration. It is an excellent participatory book. I am now purchasing a new copy as ours has lost it's cover from so much use.

Essential Guide to Behcet's Disease - truly "essential"
Working closely with a pharmaceutical company pursuing a safe and inexpensive treatment for Behcet's disease, I have spent four years researching this disease and attempting to collate the information that was available. I am excited to find there is now a book available that has completed this very difficult task in a professional manner - the Essential Guide to Behcet's Disease. This book is fantastic. Every time I pick it up to look for a bit of information, I invariably find myself poring over every word, thinking about the consequences/implications of what I am reading, and marking passages with highlighters. It not only answers the difficult questions posed by patients of this disease, it is also a wonderful reference book for physicians, with the appropriate sources listed for further research. I intend to present copies of this book to my personal physicians as I am certain they will appreciate the new information and the concise format of the reference data. Very broad in scope, I think it is imperative this book be placed into the hands of as many people as possible for the many topics it covers - from symptoms and diagnosis to standard treatments, alternative treatments, and even how to deal with the red tape associated with applying for disability when necessary. I have no reservations about recommending this book to any patients and physicians dealing with Behcet's disease.

Author: Joanne B. Ciulla
Amazon base price: $22.95
Average review score:

A must read for anyone with pretensions of leadership
The title and the academic appearance of this work makes it sound dull. That is anything but the case. Dr Ciulla is gifted writer and sharp editor. The chapters she wrote are especially compelling and riveting, and she leavens her thoughts with abundant wit and flair. I look forward to reading further works from her.

Great Browsing!
I am totally hooked on this series and hope Dover continues it for 1899-1909 and the '50s and '60s, as well. Note in this volume that the brilliant folk at J. Peterman have copied some of the c1913 skirts in their mail order catalog (I now own two, and they're gorgeous). Thank you, Dover, and thank you, J. Peterman!

Beautiful quilts. Easy technique.
Don't be fooled by the prettiness of these quilts; gorgeous can--and is in this case--easy. Breaking the construction process apart, you'll see that it's very simple. Joanne pieces a background for her quilts, then cuts her "collage" pieces from printed fabric and appliques them in place. For instance, the flowers in a still life of flowers are simply cut out of a large print flowery fabric. Easy! Use of motifs from printed fabrics rather than a calico is what gives these quilts their pow.

Highly recommended!

Fairy Tales of the Slav Peasants and Herdsmen

Cinderella¿with a twist!
This rich collection of folktales reflects the local and regional flavor of the Slavic people, presenting unique tellings of favorite stories. For example, Marouckla, the Slavic equivalent of Cinderella, does not have one fairy godmother-but twelve! In this collection, Rumpelstiltskin may go by the unfamiliar name of Kinkach Martinko, but he still has the ability to spin gold thread out of common hemp.

Sorcery, witchcraft, magic charms and incantations; dangerous journeys, unexplored forests, vast deserts and remote places; the triumph of good over evil; animals that can speak the language of men; the rise of the peasant-born sun to the role of king; evil dwarfs, wicked stepmothers, beautiful princesses, cruel rulers, fairy godmothers, and fierce monsters...these are the themes and elements found in this wonderful collection of Eastern European folktales and fairy tales.

Who are the Slavic People? In the midst of times long lost, the Slavic people shared a common language and heritage. Today these people are distinguished by the language they speak, not by national borders. There are the Southern Slavs who speak Serbo-Croatian, Slovene, Bulgarian, and Macedonian; the Western Slavs who speak Polish, Kashubian, Czech, Slovak and Sorbian, and the Eastern Slavs who speak Russian, Ukrainian and Belorussian.
