The reader is left to infer the real meaning of the card based opon a variety of given meanings. Situation is given, as are Key Words, and associations with People.
This is all well and fine, but what part of what do I read about, as a beginner? (Hypothetically) I'm not actually a beginner.. and I can figure it out. But this book is marketed for beginners. It is almost TOO broad. With all the possible meanings, which one is the one appropriate for your reading?
I'd recommend this book, NOT if you are a beginner, but if you are somewhat experienced in the Tarot and want new and different insights and ideas as to the interpretations of the cards.
Lavishly illustrated Louis seeks more than "how to read," and instead teaches the meaning of each card as a tool of self inspection. If the reader cannot read his or herself, she or he cannot read another. Instead, Louis looks to the symbolism, the richness, and the history of each card as pertains to the reader. "Know thyself" was the inscription of the Oracle of Delphi, and Louis has tried to apply that knowledge to his interpretaion of the cards. The result is a splendid text for beginner or experienced practitioner alike. A wonderful read, a glorious illustrated guide, and a charming introduction to an art too long held too arcane for the layman. "Tarot: Plain and Simple" is the best addition to the field in thrity years!

Drawing on her own experience when her father was killed and the author was a young woman, Rabbi Levy explains how she turned away from God and questioned how God could allow this murder to occur to her religious father and family. But she also goes on to describe the change in her thoughts abotu God as she attended college and then decided to become a Rabbi. Rabbi Levy explains how she came to think of God as by our side during our lowest times and the power or force that guides us back to productive lives. The author also helps us to see how other things in our lives like nature and friends and even community actitivites can help sustain us as we begin to live again
As I enjoyed reading Rabbi Kushner's book almost 20 years ago, so did I enjoy Rabbi Levy's equally inspiring and informative book. And to add to my reading pleasure was the wonderful experience I had when I was able to hear Rabbi Levy speak in person and meet with her afterwards. I do hope she will continue to write and look forward to reading her books.
Instead, he came home from his multi-age class rhapsodizing about a book I had never heard of...My Father's Dragon. And although I haven't read it (yet), I can tell you for sure what happens in the first five chapters, because my son tells us all with such verve and enthusiasim about the adventures that take place there! How the narrator's father gets out of the tigers, and builds a bridge with the crocodiles are two of his favorite parts, and the words "Bome Cack! Bome Cack!! have entered our vocabularies probably forever.
I think the three books in this series will be entering our household at Christmas time, and I can't wait to read them myself!

When you read through this book you will not only learn how to knit, but you will have a deeper appreciation of needlework in general. The author covers what basic supplies you need to get started, how to make your own knitting needles (yes! And it is a lot easier than you may think), how to decorate your needles, why you should start using two different color needles, what to do when you don't have any needles (you can still knit with your fingers, the book shows you how!), how to make "kool-aid" yarn in super-fun colors, and where yarn comes from. The instructions were much simpler to understand than those in the traditional "adult books" and after finishing a few of the basic projects, I actually felt inspired to learn more, as did my daughter.
If you are looking for a terrific alternative to TV and video games then definitely buy this book. There are plenty of photographs of girls AND boys from all different races and creeds who seem to be enjoying their time spent knitting, and the pages are splashed with fun colors and typeface.
5 Stars. This is the very best beginners book on the market!

The author considers intuition and psychic capabilities to be one and the same, but I do not. I do not consider myself a psychic. I read Second Sight to learn how to better access and integrate my intuition (whose inexplicable conclusions have frequently made me uncomfortable) into my life and decisionmaking. This book provided me with exactly the support and information that I needed.
Reading about Dr. Orloff's struggles to merge her rational and seemingly irrational sides has inspired me to do the same. The book contains simple, practical suggestions for developing and using intuition that made it easy for me to get started and progress toward integration in my life. I now feel much more comfortable with my intuition and myself. As I've learned to trust my instincts, my decisionmaking has become less arduous, and I feel a greater peace regarding difficult choices that I have made in the past.
This book will NOT help you if you want to understand WHY psychic phenomena occur. Orloff seems to avoid this issue-- she simply presents her history. Personally, I found her approach more convincing than that of some new age psychic books which treat speculation as fact.
The book uses a compelling structure where Dr. Orloff begins her tale at the breaking point in her professional career where she decides to intergrate her intuitive skills with her professional psychiatric practice. From there, she leads the reader on a very personal journey where she dealt with her abilities, and there is a very touching chapter where she comes to a greater understanding of her family (particularly her mother and grandmother's intuitive abilities). She completes the cycle by showing ways to apply intuitive reasoning into everyday life, Dr. Orloff avoids the normal cliches and makes the skills applicable to most readers. I really enjoyed her writing style and the structure of the writing.
Dr. Orloff's suggestion of keeping a dream journal is something I have always balked on, but her stories reinforced the practical value of this. I have started doing this daily ritual, and it has already provided valuable insight into my daily challenges.
I would highly recommend Dr. Orloff's work, and I look forward to her next book (hint hint).

Unless you believe that the only important totem animals are the ones that you can find on belt buckles (Eagle, Bear, Random Big Cat, etc.), there's no real Major Arcana/Minor Arcana distinction here. Every single card in this deck is big ju-ju. My first two readings kinda freaked me out, really. If archetypes, animal mythos and anthropomorphism are pretty much second-nature to you, just give up and get this deck. You will probably understand the cards without needing to check the book all that often.
Unless there was a slip-up at the publisher's, the standard deck does not come with a little reference pamphlet like most tarot decks do. It comes with a medium-sized hard back book (A nice treat, but not convenient for lugging around spontaneously -- this could be why they made the "Just for Today" deck) that explains each card, including an occasional story, and some spreads and an exercise to figure out which totem animals represent you in this spread. Two of three totems that I'd already figured out for myself showed up in the exercise, and the third was kinda iffy for me at that point anyway.
The cards are 5.5" by 3" and have an alarmingly boring back -- government blue with a single yellow lightening bolt. They're coated with something incredibly shiny, but aren't particularly slippery. There are 52 cards in the deck, plus 9 blanks so that you can fill it in with any animals that you think are missing. They're almost a little too large for me to shuffle them easily (and I've been told that I have large hands for my gender). The book's table of contents tells you what animals are included.
The artwork works inwards from a white boarder to a thinner red boarder that also bisects the interior design. The top half of the inside is sky-blue, and the bottom is an earth-tone green. In the middle is a Medicine Shield inside which is a picture of the featured animal spirit. Above, in the blue, along with the number of the card, is the aniamls name in a black script font.
The artwork is good. It's not cute, and it's not dazzlingly beautiful in a way that draws me, but I'm still impressed with this deck for all my nitpicky comments. If you think you're up for the challenge, I recommend "Medicine Cards."

I went out the next morning and bought a copy of the book for myself.
I had always thought Feng Shui was a complex subject and very difficult to understand. I never gave it my credence as I was under the impression that I would have to hire some bohemian woman to come into my home wearing fluffy skirts and spraying incents to get my home into balance. I was mistaken. Just from looking at the back cover of the book and seeing a picture of the Author, I realized my impressions were mistaken.
I found this book very easy to follow, written in simple terms to explain things that were out of my expertise. I enjoyed walking around my home after reading the sections and looking hard at the placement and balance of my home and thinking of ways to improve upon what I already had. I appreciated the author's perspective that I could use what I already had and enhance, altar or decrease as opposed to completely redoing.
Another plus I found with this book was the author's web page and a link to speak/e-mail directly with a professional on the subject for additional questions I had.
I will now keep this book "Back to Balance" on my coffee table for future parties at my home.

The author's presentation and easy to follow format, made this a book that I could not put down until I had finished it. Her quote on the back cover "Be inspired to experiment with color, floor plans, lighting, texture, art and much more !" really sums up my feeling after reading this book.
I have always felt intimated to experiment with color schemes that I would like in my home, but have now been "inspired" and begun to change my home's basic settings. I am finding with these changes, my personality is coming out more and have since began using Feng Shui in other aspects of my life.
I am glad I took the time to research a Feng Shui book prior to buying it and am very happy with my selection.
