Heartbroken
I sat down to order this book from Amazon for my 3 kids after taping my copy from Christmas 1973 together (again). I was absolutely shocked to find out that my favorite childhood book, which inspired me to travel and learn about other lands and cultures, was...out of print!!! I was even further shocked to find that there were a lot of people in the world who feel the same way as I do, finding themselves missing a hard copy of the talent and imagination of one of the greatest children's writers of our time. I do hope that this book will go back into print. Some of the images and ideas presented in this little book will stay with me forever.

Say It Ain't So!
Busy, Busy World is a gift from Richard Scarry to the world and has brought countless hours of reading pleasure to many families. Our copy is 28 years old, dog-eared and taped together but we still read it to children who come to our home. Traditionally we have given copies of the book to kids who are special to us, and there have been many. We'd add the child's picture to illustrations of Noah the boa constrictor, Pierre the Paris policeman, Couscous, et al around the world map on the full-page spreads just as you open the book. We recently had an adult friend read Schmudge, the German chimney sweep and it was delightful to hear her say as she finished the story, "It's a white kitty!" And so I am heartbroken to learn that Busy, Busy World is out of print. I hope the publisher has a change of heart. It's a shame that this great classic is no longer a staple of children's literature. What a tremendous loss.

Richard Scarry's Busy Busy World
I just gave my grandson "Cars and Trucks and Things That Go," a book that all 4 of my children adored, and he adores it too. Thought I'd give him Busy Busy World next, another all-time, all-kid favorite, but NO! it's out of print. Lots of books that the 20-somethings loved have gone out of print and it's too, too bad. Bring this one back, and all the others, in their original large formats. I noticed that Cars and Trucks... has actually been reprinted in a slightly reduced format with colors less sharp, probably because cheap-o Golden Books now owns it. But even in inferior copy, Busy Busy World deserves to live on.

Best book on prosperity you'll ever read
I'd give this book a 10-star rating if I could.

I've read many self-help, motivational books over 20 years time and all have help in some small way. However, this book has helped me in a MONUMENTAL way.

The book is an amazingly comprehensive explanation on how our attitudes and thoughts shape our lives, and how to approach all of life's situations so that you are prospered. The book explains that the word "rich" means having an "abundance of good" or living a fuller, more satisfying life, and that you are prospersous to the degree that you are experiencing peace, health, happiness and plenty in your world. So as well as becoming financially independent and secure, all areas of your life prosper, such as relationships, health, ect., and really, that's what everyone wants, even if they don't realize it.

Another section of the book says that if you persist in expecting and talking about prosperity and success, there is no power in heaven or earth that can prevent them from appearing in your world. What a powerful, true statement.

Catherine Ponder states: Desire is God tapping at the door of your mind, trying to give you greater good. She explains that it is NORMAL to want to prosper! This made a huge difference to my way of thinking.

I bought this book in the summer ..., read it once, immediately re-read it and highlighted passages, and am now in the third reading in the spring ... and am writing out affirmations and practicing what the book suggests. My life wasn't even in bad shape when I picked up the book, and yet I felt something missing. As I apply the principles of this book to my life, layers and layers of sadness and a certain depression I didn't even realize I had are dissolving.

The "dynamic laws of prosperity" are words I've been searching for all my life, and I am thankful, greatful, and appreciative to have finally found them.

Read and Get Rich
Catherine Ponder is the great Unity minister reknowned for her prosperity teaching. Her book gives powerful, practical inspiration and advice about life and how to live it rich.

This is not a book bogged down in theory and rhetoric. IT is -- like the title -- dynamic. It's a powerful "how to" book.

Ponder's message is positive and uplifting. Her enthusiasm and success are contagious. It is not stretching the truth to say that this may be one of the most important books you ever read.

A profound but very rewarding read.
I bought my Dynamic Laws of Prosperity locally but, no matter where it's purchased, it is a profound but understandable book and well worth buying. I have found it helpful to read slowly and only a few pages at a time, along with highlighting significant sentences to help me remember. This is mind- and life-changing information without a doubt.

The Fall of Freddie the Leaf covers every aspect of life!
The Fall of Freddie the Leaf is the best that I have found to not only help children understand the death of friends and loved ones, but to also help a terminal child understand what is happening to her. I have used it as a stepping stone for conversation on death. This book touches on all aspects of life. My husband and I have given out better than 50 copies! Three cheers for this book!

Highly recommend.
I believe that The Fall of Freddie the Leaf is an excellent book for children dealing with the death of a loved one. Honestly I haven't read the book in 9 years but I remember it well. When I was 10 years old my father was dying of colon cancer. The day my mother told my siblings and I (aged at the time 5, 8, 10, and 12) that my father wouldn't make it she read us the book. I still remember the book and how it helped us to understand why our daddy had to leave us. I would recommend this book to anyone with children who are facing the death of someone close to them. It was very memorable obviously because I still remember it to this day and give it a lot of credit in helping us to understand death.

I read it to my children, the night my husband died.
I read this book to my 6 year old daughter and 5 year old son the night their father died. As I returned from the hospital, a neighbor gave me this book and it helped tremendously that evening. I read it often to my children that first year after our loss. I am now a teacher researching children's books on death for a Master's degree and I rediscovered this book. The Fall of Freddie the Leaf should be a part of every primary classroom library.

My all-time favorite book
I have read this book to my 4th. grade class for the last 11 years...... I have tryed to make up a different voice for each the main characters.... We have even put on a school-play based on the part of the book that takes place in the department store....the kids love getting dressed up in the costumes that I had made up ..... I love when kids come back( who are now in college /high school) and ask if I still read the story of the Oddkins....

His best book! Very imaginitive! Fun for all ages!
I loved this book. I'm eleven and my teacher read it to us in fourth grade. I'd reccomend this wonderful book to anyone. I thought it was really good. For ages 6-100, It's a good book you can enjoy over and over again. If you have a rainy day, read this book!

Truly a tale for all ages!
This book was first read to me when I was in the third grade by my student teacher, and it has been my favorite book ever since. The characters, although they are stuffed animals, come to life in this enchanting tale. If you haven't read it already, I highly recommend it!

Amazing!!
Although, I have read all of Ms. Krentz's novels, I recently started reading novels under her pseudonym Amanda Quick. I have to say that I absolutely love her books. Mystique is the second Quick novel I've read, and I'm just hooked! I loved both of the characters in this book. Alice was amusing with her stubbornness and boldness. I loved it when she didn't listen to Hugh and ordered him around. Hugh was great too. I thought it was really funny that he got his messenger, Julian, to write him lists of compliments that he could say to Alice. So sweet!! This book was a perfect blend of wit, comedy, romance, and action. A great way to be introduced to novels by Quick! I hope she continues to write a few more medieval romances!!

A Fabulous Read!
This book by Amanda Quick was absolutely adorable, and is a perfect example of the Quick we all know and love.

Alice and Hugh the Relentless both have claims to a certain green stone, but neither actually has it, as it has been stolen from both of them. Alice believes she knows where it is, and makes a deal with Hugh to help him find it, and in return he will pay for her brother's education in France and giver her money to enter a convent and study. However, Hugh wants a wife, so he tells Alice he needs a temporary betrothal that he will later break, but in truth is counting on keeping Alice.

I can certainly see why, because Alice was inteligent, witty, and chanllenging. Hugh was an equally likeable character who was a good strategist, caring, loveable, kind, and of course, relentless. They were the perfect pair in marriage and partners in solving the mystery of the green stone.

This was an interesting change from Quick, who does not normally write medievals, but it was just as enjoyable as the rest of her books. If you like this one, I recommend With This Ring and Dangerous, or any other Quick book. They are all excellent. Happy Reading!

A Wonderful Tale!!
Well, Jayne Ann Krentz aka Amanda Quick has basically one formula for her stories. But what a formula. She is light, she is witty, but the Quicks are just her JAKs in period costume. But that does not stop her from giving you a winner tale. If you like JAK/Quick, you will LOVE her only medieval. If you are not her fan...your tough luck..lol...you are missing one great time!!
The one of two medievals (Desire being the other) from the talented Ms. Krentz/Quick. With her usual charm and wit, she creates lovable, endearing characters and as with all Quick/Krentz novels, the emphasis is on fun and hi-jinx and romance.

This time Lady Alice joins forces with Sir Hugh the Relentless,on a hunt for a long lost stone, which could cost them their lives. The tale is so endearing! Lady Alice will Capture your heart!!

When Lady Alice plucks up her nerve and approaches Hugh the Relentless, is its a dark and stormy night (lol). He is black haired, with amber eyes (with JAK you get amber, green or grey!). The first impression, he is every bit the fearsome warrior of his reputation, but to Lady Alice he is her knight in shining armour. She thinks she can control this man, after all she has been driving away fortune-seeking suitors for years, along with managing her interfering family.

Lady Alice has deliberately lured him to this man with the promise of a green crystal belong to him. But Lady Alice is using it as a bargaining chips (also she does not have it!!). She is hoping to find it, and her dowry to free herself and her brother from her uncle's clutches. Hugh agrees to her terms, only, he has terms of his own: that Lady Alice must agree to a temporary betrothal and spend the winter in Hugh's great stone fortress, Scarcliffe Keep.

The adventure begins, but Sir Hugh's lifelong enemy is plotting against them.

One of the few authors I keep in hardback and there is a reason for it!!

So Sad and devastating!!
Dawn Rochelle is a fourteen year old girl who is dying of cancer. She tries to act normal by going back to camp for the summer, only to come home to find out that her cancer has reaccured. Her brother is in love and is planning to get married until he finds out that his sister needs him for a bone marrow transplant.Does Dawn make it through the transplant and live long enough to see her 15th birthday?Read this book to find out what happens to Dawn and her brother!

Fourteen and Dying
This novel is about one of many tribulations that Dawn Rochelle has to face during her cancer treatments. Fourteen year old, Dawn Rochelle, was in remission from cancer, but one day when she went to the hospital for a check up she finds out that her cancer is back. She dreams of living a normal life with out being sick all the time. Her brother, Rob, and her parents are so supportive and care deeply for her. Dawn's remission period and the challenges she faces in handling a bone marrow transplant from her brother. Even with the transplant she has only a 50% chance of the surgery curing her. As the book continues it tells that Dawn started getting infections, but luckily Rob's bone marrow was fighting it. At the end Dawn stops breathing, they go in and reviving her. She later is talking to her brother about wanting to live to see her next birthday.

This book was a wounder to read. It was a page turner and I couldn't put it down. Lurlene McDaniel writes her books to make you feel as if you are really there. She also makes the places seem so real. She has a way of making the charters seem like they are acting it out right in front of you. All the books I have read have been great.

Close to Death
A Review by Laura
This story is about a girl named Dawn, with cancer. She wants to live a normal life with out being treated like she is sick all the time. For a while her cancer was in remission, but one day when she went to the hospital for a check up she finds out that her cancer is back.

I really liked this book because I can kind of understand how Dawn feels being a teenager and all. She has to face a lot of different challenges since she has cancer. I also understand how her brother Rob felt and how he had to deal with Dawns cancer. I also thought that Darcy was very selfish in thinking only about her wedding instead of caring about dawn.

I really think people should read this book because it is really good and it kind of made me think a little more about people with cancer or any thing else, and also understand what they have to go through.

The Seven Silly Eaters
Published in Hardcover by Harcourt (1998)
Author: Hoberman
Amazon base price: $15.00
Average review score:

Mary Ann Hoberman strikes gold again with this tale
Prolific children's book author and poet Mary Ann Hoberman has struck gold once again in this funny tale about the seven silly eaters (all children, naturally) in the Peters family. Mrs. Peters starts off as patient as can be, as each of the seven children develops some quirk or another having to do with size, temperature, taste, or type of food that they absolutely, positively WILL NOT EAT. She bends over backwards to accomodate their likes and dislikes, and the result is that the children are able to combine their favorite foods to come up with something wonderful for their wonderful mother's birthday.

The illustrations beautifully complement the story. Artist Marla Frazee's work has something of a Hillary Knight look to it (think early "Eloise" by Kay Thompson), and she beautifully captures the frenetic wiggliness and activity inherent in a family with seven children. Lots of fun for children, especially ones who happen to be (or know!) "silly eaters."

I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH!
I bought this book online because of the author & title alone, not even knowing what it was about, so when it arrived the day before my birthday, I naturally fell deeply in love with it. (It's about seven finicky children who each eat only one thing, each child with his or her own special food, and they end up creating a birthday cake for their mother out of all of their foods combined.) It's a great book, my kids (3 & 7) love it as much as I do.(Any Dr. Seuss afficianado knows that reading aloud is so much more fun when it rhymes!) The illustrations are so beautifully detailed, as well. We see new things in the pictures every time we read the book! (I especially love the laundry piled everywhere in the Peters' family house...What else would you expect, with seven little kids?!) Once you read this book, you will want to read Mary Ann Hoberman's other books! AND - HERE'S A FUN TIDBIT - DID YOU KNOW THAT HER SON CHUCK INVENTED THE HOBERMAN SPHERE? HOW TALENTED IS THAT FAMILY?

Our family's favorite!
This book is a favorite of our family. The illustrations our beautiful and tell a story on top of the story in the text. Each child's distinct personality is revealed in the illustrations.

We starting reading this to our children when they were about 3 months old. My daughter knew it by heart by 2. We have given this book as a gift many times and it has always gotten great reviews. It is an ideal gift book because it is undeservedly obscure--- your recipient won't already have it.

We have tried unsuccessfully into turning this book into a family cooking project. Attempts at mixing the ingredients described in the book haven't worked out so well--- too much liquid!

The Secret Teachings of All Ages

Average review score:

Encyclopedic review of Esoteric systems
This is an excellent text for anyone interested in Esoteric teachings from ancient times onward. The author covers just about anything you've heard of and probably a lot that you haven't. The color plates and illustrations are excellent and there is an amazing amount of information packed into this book. One problem arises, however: some of the information is outdated when newer discoveries are taken into account. The author wrote the book something like 80 years ago and though it's been through revisions, it still contains information that probably should be updated. That is a rare instance however, and I'd say 99% of this book is accurate, right on the money, and DEFINITELY worth the price. You probably won't find another source that covers as much as well. Buy it, borrow it, whatever, it is worth the time to read.

A neccessity for every initiate and scholar
I remeber the first time that I was shown this tome nearly twenty years ago. My father pulled this volume down from his bookshelf and let me read through it, watching my expressions as I beheld its beauty. I was left with a thirst of wanting more. His copy was an older paperback edition that he acquired in some little esoteric bookstore and at that time this was not an easy book to find, now its much easier (for better or worse) to gain secrets that were once privy to the few.

Since I first beheld this magical book, I was able to procure the large (very large) hardcover limited edition signed by the author - the true gem of my library, priceless.

This is a masterpiece of esoteric literature, one that you'll never part with. Truly a must have volume that belongs in the library of every Freemason, Kabbalist, or Rosicrucian. The title says it all. You'll spend hours upon hours in reflection and enthralled at the details of the text and illustrations. The full color plates are beautifully rendered and will literally leap off the pages. Now that this volume is more easily available and you are at least looking for it (or you wouldn't be here, now would you?) I have one suggestion - BUY IT

INVITATION TO THE MYSTERIES
This book changed my life. It introduced me to a more profound way of approching "religion" problems and inconsistencies. The book first overviews the prevailing materialistic philosophies, and then outlines the elements of secret knowledge residing in what might otherwise appear to be but psychological archetypes in the mythic tradition, the misunderstanding of which has given rise to materialistic philosophy. But there is indeed more to our western traditions than is generally realized. Inside the myths and allegories of all ages is a truth that very few appreciate. This book outlines in lucid detail, those truths that the world desperately needs, and that have been destroyed by time, wars and arrogance, and consolidates them under one cover. The books physical beauty alone makes it one of the most impressive books ever published. The plates make great meditation mandalas. The bibliography list is devoted to source works that have been neglected--many still not in print or even translated. To actually read the book is equivalent to a college course in the mysteries systems of antiquity, which were indeed the first schools in the historical record. The book is but an outline focusing on the "occidental" mysteries..but a very profound one. Not since the Secret Doctrine of Blavatsky had a book so comprehensibly melded the western tradition. And not since has a book come close to this one, first published in 1928.

Classic Christianity
Published in Hardcover by Harvest House Publishers (1989)
Author: Bob George
Amazon base price: $12.99
Used price: $35.35
Average review score:

An excellent "classic" book on the topic of Christianity!
In clear, concise writing, best-selling author Bob George captures the heart of the Gospel. With humor, wit and incredible insight, Bob shares his struggles and conclusions about what it means to be a Christian. The reader quickly grasps how simple living the Christian life is and how man has made it complex. The information in this book has the capability to change a person and his or her thoughts about God. If you are interested in finally being able to comprehend what true Christianity is all about, I highly recommend you read this book

There is NOTHING like God's Grace...
I have been a Christian for 15 years and my faith has been a heavy burden for me for so long and I never understood why. Peace and joy were only words to me. I assumed that I just had not yet achieved "authentic Christianity" and that I had to work to achieve that level before I could know those things that God promises. Boy, was I off base. Bob George's book literally changed my life (and I don't use that phrase liberally or lightly). It showed me the true gospel message that I had been missing for so long. For the first time in my depressed life, God lifted the blackness and I knew what peace and rest meant. I now know more about what salvation REALLY means: true life on earth not just biding our time until we get to heaven. The Lord meets you where you are. Thank God for that AND for Bob George's book. A must read for anyone looking for rest in their faith.

What a Christian Book Should Do
... Bob George doesn't have exclusive access to the truths he illustrates in his book. A Christian doesn't have to read this book to realize the abundant life he or she has in Christ Jesus.

So why do I recommend this book so highly? Mainly because I believe that God has blessed Bob with an incredible ability to communicate spiritual messages to others. He certainly communicated those messages to me. Classic Christianity had a major impact on my life. Before reading this book, I was steeped in religion. I was brought up to believe that "God helps those who help themselves." Only later in life did I learn that the Bible never actually said that, Benjamin Franklin did. So everything I did as a Christian I did out of my own effort, trying to repay God a little for what He did for me by sending His Son to die on the cross. Oh sure, I sometimes asked God to help me when things were going a little rough, but I never considered asking anything of Him when situations were going well or my problems seemed manageable.

I certainly didn't ask for God's help when I read the Bible, and this is why I never came to the conclusions Bob did until after reading Classic Christianity. Bob consistently returns to the scriptures while making his points. He helped me to realize the importance, rather the necessity of relying upon the Holy Spirit for guidance through ALL parts of my life. Once I started to let the Holy Spirit take control of my life, I began to see the Bible from an entirely new vantage point. Everything started to make sense.

Bob's book does exactly what every Christian book should. It leads us back to our relationship with Jesus. Once there, we can receive truth right from the source of truth. Having reread most of the New Testament after reading Classic Christianity, I truly believe that the points made in Classic Christianity are valid. But don't take Bob George's word for it and certainly don't take mine. Read this book and then compare it to the Bible yourself. See if it doesn't have as big of an impact on your relationship with Jesus as it had on mine.
