A family favorite. Best book ever.
My mother read this book to me as a child, and I have read it many times myself as an older child and as an adult. It teaches the true values of life from the mind of a totally innocent child, who has never been exposed to all of the attitudes of the "real" world, but has been thrown into the real world by unfortunate circumstances. The sweetness, beauty and innocence of this child is so refreshing in this world. My mother also read it to my oldest child. They had regular Friday night reading sessions, and JUST DAVID was one of their favorites. This is one of his best memories of his grandma. She died when he was 9. I will have a first grade classroom next year, and plan to read this to my class. Would love to have another copy. My copy is a family treasure, and I hate to take it to school and risk losing it. Hoping for a reprint. Excellent and timeless book.

Just David
Just David was a steal for me. I bought it at a Garage Sale along with many other old books. I had it for over a year before I finally read it. It is by far my most favorite book. I love how David always brings out the best in people without actually realizing what he is doing. He is young and the most naive little boy ever. He reminds me a bit of my six year old daughter. She always sees the beauty of something...even bugs. This is the only book I ever recommend. It is a wonderful, delightful, and interesting book. A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE! I am so glad it is still in print. I have seen it in many local libraries as well. I have since read other books by Eleanor Porter, but find Just David to be my favorite to date. Most Libraries will loan out there copies...so if not on your library shelf, see if they can find a copy for you to read. Enjoy! Lori

Memories and the Present
I read this marvelous book when I was a fifth grader and absolutely loved it. My love for the book did not fade, as when I was in the eighth grade, I wrote a required book review and chose Just David as my book. My love of the book must have come through, as the teacher read it aloud to the class. She had never read anyone's book review aloud before--so the influence of this book is wide. A reprint would be so welcome to both today's young readers and to those of us who loved the book in the past. I hope to own Wendy Lawton's Just David doll someday.

The Endless Tale
Sublime, inspirational, fun, funny, and ultimately, true.

That's what I now think of "Arm in Arm," the book that my grandparents gave me some 25 years ago. When I was young, I had no idea how much it meant to me - just that it was a cool book that I would read over and over. I loved the drawings; the fun rhymes; the inventiveness it carries.

Re-reading it as an adult, though, gave me a deeper appreciation of the themes. It has the social parodies found in between the lines of Lewis Carrol, the wit and humour of Wilde, the surrealist vision of Dali, and even more!

It remains, to this day, one of my favourite books to reread. (Thank you, Remy Charlip!)

Memorable as a child, a favorite gift as an adult
Arm in Arm has followed me throughout my life by way of meeting others who have read and fondly remember it from childhood. I have never forgotten this book and have given it to many of my good friends with children. It has delightful illustrations and rhymes that not only inspire wonder and imagination, but also seem to play with you as if the book itself is somehow alive and pulling your leg.

Remy Charlip has a masterful way of holding a child's interest, not to mention an adult's, with his play on words, memorable rhymes and storytelling, as well as his playful use of color and unique illustration style. Thank you Remy for many fond memories of this book and on behalf of many of my friends, thank you for giving them a moment of peace while their children escape with Arm in Arm.

Arm in Arm is a precious and life enhancing book for all.
My mom read this book to me when I was little in the late 1960's, and to this day it is one of my favorite books. I have cherished the original copy, moving from my mom's home to four other cities, always mindful of which box it's packed away in.

An original copy is a family heirloom--no joke. The way it made me laugh, and really sparked my imagination was incredible. Here's my favorite(quoted from memory and not verbatim):

(Picture a bunch of kids crammed into one bed) It's better to be in a warm bed on a cold day looking out at the cold snow than to be out in the cold snow on a cold day looking in at a warm bed.

Something like that. I loved this book. Please share it with your children. And if you have the opportunity, get an old copy because the paper stock was incredible and it was bound, but most of all, the illustrations were beautiful.

Excellent - easy to read; easy to learn from
The book is a wonderful tool for self-development, especially because of the exercises that bring you to the next level of self-knowledge. It's easy to read, understand and to absorb the knowledge. I like the way Carmen explains difficult things in an easy way. That makes the title "Everyday" karma very good - because it's something that you can use everyday.
The book got me from the first page and touched my heart. I really want to recommend this book.

The journey down the inner path to enlightenment
Many people have an interest in spiritual growth but are unsure as to how to pursue enlightenment. Carmen Harra has done an excellent job of providing just what many will need to begin their journey. Her new book Everyday Karma gives the reader a basic understanding of the spiritual world written in everyday language that is easy to comprehend. There are many volumes of metaphysical books on the shelves of most bookstores, most of which are written by authors that people don't recognize or simply can't understand. What sets Carmen Harra's book apart from the others is that she is recognizable and her record of accurate predictions and spiritual knowledge speaks for itself. She has made many appearances on television and has made her predictions well known. Beyond this I think what most people will appreciate about her book is that they will be comfortable with her and with the information they receive. She also includes exercises to help the reader begin the trip down the inner path to enlightenment. I thoroughly enjoyed her book and recommend it to anyone interested in spiritual growth.

Everyday Karma - Everyday Living
Carmen Harra has created a wonderful, intuitive book that you can relate to on a daily basis. By following her advice on how to focus your thoughts, calm your mind, and make what you project come true she really gives you the tools to make this happen. She truly brings you on a journey of healing and enlightenment so your can start living the life you are destined without being blocked. A very enjoyable read, I found myself not wanting to put the book down as well as going back and re-reading sections over and over again. With similar books on this subject, Carmen Harra's "Everyday Karma" is far superior and much more useful -- you will not be disappointed!

Hippos Go Berserk

Truly Berserk!
This book has all the elements of fun--one author, who obviously loves to write children's books, one subject (HIPPOS) and counting and you have the ingredients for a fun book. My 6 year old loves Hippos Go Berserk! and is learning to read it. She loves the counting as well. This book is in our Boynton collection (we must have the "Boynton Memorial Library" by now!) and it gets read weekly. We have to rotate through all the other Boynton books we have. It's a very good book and I recommend it, for children of ALL ages.

Hilarious tale - Mom loves it as much as baby
Hippos Go Beserk is a humorous story of what happens when a lonely hippo decides to call some friends for a party. The text is beautifully rhythmic and melodic and the pictures are bright and cute. The story involves counting up to nine and then backwards from nine to one again. The theme had potential to be monotonous as it involves a series of pages with one more (or less) hippo on each page, but Boynton did a good job of varying the illustrations and what the hippos are doing on each page so it is enjoyable and humorous.

This is one of my 14 month old daughter's very favorite books. She carries it around the house with her. She LOVES the middle page (the climax of the story), where "all the hippos go beserk" and has caught on to the change in the rhythm of the story and the change in my voice when I read it. She thumbs through the book and when she gets to that page she shrieks and grins and bounces up and down. Overall it's well-written and well-illustrated.

I have also found that this is one of the few toddler books that "speaks to" me personally. I really enjoy the cute story and the rhythm of the prose, but I also find that when I read the story it leaves me reflective. Parenthood can be lonely at times, and I'm inspired by the lonely hippo at the beginning of the story who takes the initiative to call some friends and throw a party. Whenever I read this book I am left feeling more lighthearted and inspired to call a few friends myself.

Tons of Hippo Fun
This is a delightful book! I bought it for my 6 month old son, who has a limited attention span for stories but LOVES this one. I also gave it to my 2 year old niece who, according to my sister-in-law, asks to have "Hippos Go Zerk!" read at least 16 times per day.

Boynton also adds some humorous touches that Mom and Dad can appreciate. Look for the Hippo Whistler's Mother!

The Most Popular Tarot Deck, Astouding Accuracy in Readings
I have worked with this deck on-and-off, for almost four years, and I must say that it gives very accurate results. I do not think it is a great Beginner's Deck (try Rider-Waite for that)--however, the woman who created this deck infused a wealth of information into the Artwork. Many people are leary of this Tarot deck, due to the fact that Crowley had a less than reputable persona. Yet, from all the research my Wiccan Wife has done, it seems Frieda Harris had a tremendous amount of influence in the project. I believe each person should judge for themselves. Some of the cards do, in fact, have a dark, brooding feeling to them, yet for some of these cards it is deservingly so. The Major Arcana are quite Beautiful and the Esoteric Symbolism worked into the Deck, throughout, is a Wealth of Knowledge. The placement of two Major Arcana cards are different than most standard decks, but comparable with a set of Egyptian Tarot Cards, from another Mystery school.

Previously, I was not willing to review Crowley's works, due to his reputation. However, I discovered that the reputations of the founders of an org. I learned-from were just as impugnable. I must give Crowely respect for at-least being Honest about his nature and not deceiving his students.

As with all things in life, it is best to investigate many different branches of this field of study, but I know that Most of the Tarot Readers I have met use The Thoth Deck more than any other deck in their collection. The Wonderful Artwork and Fascinating Symbolism give the Reader a vast-array of information to draw-from. My Wife is a locally renowned Tarot Reader and she swears by this deck, for accuracy....and, ALL of her friends swear by her Accuracy!

The Thoth Deck has some Great Companion Books, such as: "The Tarot Handbook : Practical Applications of Ancient Visual Symbols" -- by Angeles Arrien <&, of course, "The Book of Thoth" by Aleister Crowley, Frieda Harris (Illustrator)>

I suggest buying the hand-sized Deck, because Large Decks are usually very cumbersome and it is hard to get a good psychokenetic feel for the cards. It is always best to have a deck that can be easily manipulated in the hands, for better accuracy in readings.

In my opinion, this deck is one of Crowley's greatest Contributions to those involved with The Mysteries.

I also strongly suggest studying Jungian Psychology, in conjunction with Tarot studies.

Thousands of people believe this is the best deck on the market.

Excellent, balanced deck for self exploration
Out of dozens of Tarot decks I've owned and used over the years, I keep finding myself coming back to the Thoth deck. The images and colors are intense, the symbology encompasses many traditions and beliefs - and Crowley/Harris included the Light and Shadow sides in a completely balanced way, assisting the reader in his/her Quest. Takes some getting used to, for some. For beginners, I would recommend learning with a book written specifically to aid in interpreting the Thoth deck. This deck - I won't leave home without it! (An exaggeration, but I do take it with me when travelling).

This is the Thoth Deck to own!
This is the Thoth deck printed in Switzerland. This is the one you want to own. The colors of the cards printed in Switzerland are the most true to the original art of Lady Frieda Harris.

I fell in love with the Thoth Tarot after receiving a reading from a friend. The colors in her cards were beautiful and vibrant, and I was mesmerized by the quality of the art work. I immediately ordered a Thoth deck from Amazon.

When it arrived, I was stunned to discover that the cards were not as beautiful as I remembered. The cards had a murky green tinge to them. When I compared them to my friend's deck, I discovered that they were *not* the same. Although the art was exactly the same, the simple difference of the green tint gave my cards a totally different appearance and feeling - ominous and foreboding. Upon further examination, we discovered that her deck was printed in Switzerland and mine was printed in Belgium.

I had to search the Internet for months before I found someone who had a copy of the large deck printed in Switzerland. At that time Amazon did not have the Swiss version, however, they now have it and here it is. It is about $4.00 higher than the deck printed in Belgium, but more than worth it.

The Thoth deck printed in Switzerland is stunningly beautiful and powerful. I have always given extraodinary readings with the Thoth deck, even as a novice. It continues to be my favorite deck to read with.

I highly recommend "The Crowley Tarot: The Handbook to the Cards" by Hajo Banzhaf as a companion book for the Thoth deck, no matter what your level of experience, and "Tarot As Your Companion: A Practical Guide to the Rider-Waite and Crowley Thoth Tarot" Decks" by Hajo Banzhaf as an introduction for beginners.

Amelia Bedelia

Amelia Bedelia literally does everything on her list of jobs
Learning to read means learning new words and when you learn new words you need to learn what those new words mean and once you learn what words mean they should continue to mean what they mean because otherwise how would we talk to each other? Or, to quote Humpty Dumpty, "I mean what I say is not the same thing as I say what I mean." That is why "Amelia Bedelia" is such a great little story. Author Peggy Parish knows that words do not always mean what you think they should mean. So when Amelia Bedelia shows up for the first day of work and Mrs. Rogers gives her a list of things to do, Amelia Bedelia reads the list (after making a delicious lemon-meringue pie first) and does exactly what the list tells her to do. If the list says "Put the lights out when you finish in the living room," then Amedlia Bedelia carefully unscrew each light bulb and hangs them on the clothes line to air them out. Children and former children alike will laugh as Amedlia Bedlia literally goes through the list of instructions left by Mrs. Rogers. The illustrations by Fritz Siebel are almost as good as the pictures in our mind of Amelia Bedelia changing the towels in the green bathroom or dusting the furniture, plus Siebel gives the rosy-cheecked maid the same great smile on every single picture. Once you finish there book there are more literary adventures of the literal Amelia Bedelia and if you like these books then you should also check out "The King Who Rained" by Fred Gwynne and advance to the joy of homophones.

I learned to love reading with this book.
My great aunt used to pick me up from Pre-school, and together we would read about Amelia Bedelia's adventures. We laughed until we cried in that old green rocking chair. Unto this day, we laugh and talk about the antics of Amelia Bedelia, and we recommend it to everyone, young and young-at-heart alike. Take it from a 21 year-old, you can't outgrow Amelia Bedelia.

A Classic
This is one of my all-time favorite books. Amelia Bedelia's unique way of interpreting instructions from Mr. and Mrs. Rodgers will always make me laugh. When someone tells you to "draw the drapes," you don't think of actually drawing them with a pencil, but Amelia Bedelia interprets each word at a literal level. This book is perfect for ages 6-9 because they will understand the housekeeper's witticisms. The text is a little longer than a lot of "An I Can Read Book," but illustrator Fritz Siebel backs up each page of text with a colorful picture of Amelia Bedelia's adventures. Author Peggy Parish has developed a character who will persevere in the world of children's literature because of her wit and irresistable charm.

A book about Jesus
The Desire of Ages is a book that has changed my life. It made Jesus Christ come alive for me. The accounts of Christ's life are vivid and real and Ellen White mixes his story with personal day-to-day applications and lessons for us. Anyone that has a desire to know the Savior should definately read this book. It doesn't matter what religion you are, because it is a book about Jesus and you cannot help but be drawn to him through its powerful message. It will inspire you to be a better person, make you laugh and make you cry, but most of all it will make you long to see Jesus.

Passionate Love From a Personal God
There's a reason why the Library of Congress holds this as their best book on the life of Christ, and also why my personal copy is in tatters. I simply have never read another book, besides the Bible, that made God's love so clear to me. We are bathed in His love every moment of our lives, whether we acknowledge this or not. The ultimate proof of this divine love is revealed in the life and death of one Man -- Jesus. This book will make Him real to you.

Desire of Ages
The very best account of the life of Christ that I have ever read, aside from the Bible. This author brings a seemingly eye-witness perspective to this work. The characters come to life in amazing detail. It makes reading the Bible itsself more understandable. This book give the reader a feeling of "personal contact" with the Man whose birth divided time into BC and AD. Who was / is Jesus? I am so glad that I read this book. Like a magnifying glass to The Gospels.

Not just for girls!
Young boys like this too. I think too often we steer boys away from books with girl protagonists, and that attitude stays with them. A 3 to 5 year old boy might delight in the rhymes just as much as a girl of that age. Seeing girls often develop language skills earlier, the use of books such as these with well-controlled, thoughtful use of language is useful for boys too! I loved Madeline (I'm over 40) and thought the illustrations aren't groovy - it's tough in the computer age! - they are quite whimsically delightful.

Kids I know like this book.

A spunky role model!
I missed the Madeline books completely when I was a child, so my daughter and I discovered them together. It's an education seeing Madeline through her eyes. In Madeline, my daughter, who is somewhat shy and leery of new experiences, has a heroine who is smart, spunky, and completely in control of every situation.

I like Madeline the character a lot more than I like the books. I've found that very few writers can write wonderful verse, and I don't include Bemelmans in that august company. Some of his rhymes flow nicely together, such as the opening lines of the first book:

In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines lived twelve little girls in two straight lines. Some of his rhymes are jarring:

and soon after Dr. Cohn came, he rushed out to the phone, and he dialed : DANton-ten-six --

'Nurse,' he said, 'it's an appendix!' Everybody had to cry --

not a single eye was dry. . . . Madeline woke up two hours

later, in a room with flowers.

Still, the story isn't bad. A brave little girl is rushed to the hospital, has her appendix out, then shows off her scar. She makes it so exciting that all the other girls want their appendix out, too. Even my daughter wanted to have an appendix scar, until I explained just what that would entail.

The classic start of the Madeline series
A short children's story about a young girl who lives with eleven other girls in a home in Paris and who has to go to the hospital to have her appendix removed. It was a 1940 Caldecott Honor book (i.e., a runner-up to the Medal winner) for best illustration in a book for children. This book, and others in the Madeline series, have become classics in children literature and every serious student of children literature should have it on their shelves. Children love these books.

A Lesson in Freedom
This book nails the formula for exciting fiction: change throughconflict. And there's plenty of conflict. Young David is trying tomake his way north to freedom after escaping from a concentrationcamp. He must do this alone and at the risk of his life. Recapture, starvation, loneliness, and a 1000-mile expanse of war-torn Europe arethe obstacles in his way.

We trek with David, feeling his pain, fear, sorrow, and disillusionment. But there, too, on the journey welearn about life, love, courage, and the value of freedom astwelve-year-old David comes of age well before his time, and Europecomes of age a little too late.

This book is an excellent choice forspoiled, middle class American children who've been spoon-fed freedomtheir whole life and think that the only freedom worth fighting for isan extra hour of video games before bed. --Christopher Bonn Jonnes.

David's Journey North To Freedom
North To Freedom is a wonderful book. It tells about a twelve year old boy, David, and his escape from a concentration camp where he has been since before he can remember. He is on a dangerous journey, and he can trust nobody. He meets many people, learns new words, discovers how to smile, and finds his mother. On the way he makes good friends with Maria, and young girl whom he saved from a fire, he calls her "the little girl who looks so like a flower". David also makes friends with the dog, King. David is not used to dogs because he only knew of the mean one's in the concentration camp, but King is different, kind and gentle, and wants to protect David. King is greatly involved in the end of the story, read the book to find out more. This book is also good for class liturature. My class has used it in sixth grade, but I would suggest it in fourth grade because now it was really easy to read. This is a very touching story about a boy struggling for life, proving his strength, making friends, and proving his is smart and clever in ways unimaginable. I suggest it for anyone, even if it is a quick read!

A Very Exciting Book
North to Freedom is about a boy named David who escapes from a prison camp somewhere in southern Europe during WWII and travels all the way to Denmark. I liked the book because it is exciting, for example: When David runs away from some guards who want to capture him, his dog saves him. Another exciting moment is when he finds out why he needs to go to Denmark. This book taught me about trust, because David had to learn to trust people on his journey. I recommend this book for kids age 9 and up, and to be read aloud to kids 6 and up.
