The best kids' book I've ever read
I'm only 12, but this is the best book of the hundreds I've read. Alice McKinley's aunt reminds her that she's almost 13 and will be Woman of the House soon. (Her mother died when she was four.) Alice gets a head start on her womanhood by cleaning the entire house, having her father and brother get physical checkups, and throwing a birthday bash for her father's fiftieth birthday. Besides that, she must survive the latest crisis at school: the boys are matching the girls' chest sizes with a state according to its mountains' heights! Perspective yet hilarious! My favorite book ever until the next Alice book comes out

First grade teacher
From a written review, posted here by the author's spouse: Ms. Williams combines artistry that evokes days gone by with her use of tried and true nursery rhymes illustrated with drawings reminiscent of the thirties, and hip drawing techniques of today where the words leap out to show the concept for such letters as "H" for Huge and "I for icy." What fun! Great for pre-schoolers and beginning readers! Priscilla Milliman, first grade teacher

Professional Book Reviewer
From a written review, posted here by the author's spouse: This alphabet book for beginners offers something different: a size and shape-grabbing presentation which holds some simple surprises, such as a drippy 'D,' a growing 'G,' and an icy 'I.' Letters convey the meanings of the words they spell, while simple layout and one-word examples make it easy for kids to learn. The Midwest Book Review, Oregon, Wisconsin

Ella

A Journey into the Mystcal Realm
Uri Geller's Ella is a story of a bulimic fourteen year old girl abused by her parents, a alcoholic mother, and a fundamentalist Christian father which makes her withdraw into the supernatural world of angels and levitation. The only love and emotional support Ella knows is from her brother Frank which develops into a close wonderful telepathic communication. Read the book and find out how Ella is able to save her brother's life. Is it the power of love and prayer? This novel is so powerful that it will move your very being emotionally everytime you re-read it. Peter Gauderson, the journalist that Ella learns to trust and love is able to telepathically communicate with her, is a good man in the beginning. How sad when greed takes over his heart and he exploits Ella for his own personal gain. Uri Geller gives a very graphic discription of the horrors of suicide that will stay with you long after you finish the novel. Can Ella raise Peter from the dead or will she give her teddy bear to Jesus? Will Peter discover the true meaning of love and joy only marriage can give? It should warm your heart that "part of the proceeds" are going to the Bristol Children's Hospital and the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. Crystal Rose

Fascinating read!
Well-known psychic Geller turns from nonfiction (Uri Geller's Mindpower Kit) to fiction in his latest book, and though his original motive may have been to advocate his beliefs, the result is a most respectable piece of storytelling. Fourteen-year-old Ella Wallis, the daughter of an unhappy working-class family (with a domineering, adulterous father and an insensitive, alcoholic mother) in Bristol, England, suddenly finds herself developing uncontrollable paranormal powers - books fly around her, a forceful whining sound surrounds her whenever she's frightened. As her destructive powers increase, she is ostracized by schoolmates and soon becomes the center of a media circus. The publicity provokes a three-cornered power struggle between psychic researcher Peter Guntarson, public relations mogul José Miguel Dóla and Ella's avaricious family. As Ella becomes more adept, capable of levitation, teleportation and worldwide healing, her intense friendship with Guntarson appears to give him the victory. But Ella's capabilities are wearing away at her health and sanity, and she may not survive Guntarson's final challenge. Geller's novel recalls the themes of both The Exorcist and Carrie, but it does so with intelligence, wit and an abundance of well-chosen detail, fleshing out even such unsympathetic characters as Ella's father, Ken. Geller's acerbic portrait of the sensationalist media adds a new twist to this predictable but engaging tale. (June)

FYI: Geller next book, Mind Medicine, will be published by Element in October.Publishers Weekly

Uri Geller's Amazing Powers.
I have read over thirty books w/contet of Paranormal, but this one is better than all the rest. I have found numerous references to this book wich indicates to me the quality of this book to other writers. About Paranormal, this is the best book available. Ella's story can be true. Each chapter concludes with questions to guide one's study. If you can only afford one book, get this one, I don't think you will be disappoint if you are serious about your Paranormal.

I Love this Book!
I think Gong Hee Fot Choy really explains and makes clear the life situations that we face on a daily basis. I have been using this for over 10 years on a weekly basis. I find it very enlightening and comforting. Try it! My only advice is that the cards you use for this should be ONLY used for this and nothing else. It's supposed to keep things "pure."

GREAT FORTUNE TELLING BOOK
THIS BOOK IS GREAT BECAUSE IT COMES WITH IT'S ON GAME BOARD. YOU CAN DO IT IN LESS THAN 15 MINUTES. EASIER THAN THE TAROT! I HAVE RECEIVED ACCURATE RESULTS EVERY WEEK. I'M GETTING ONE FOR MY DAUGHTER AND MY BEST FRIEND. I COULDN'T FIND IT AT BORDERS, SO I GOT MINE AT WALDEN BOOKS. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT, THOUGH I HOPE NOBODY READS THIS UNTIL I BUY AT LEAST 3 MORE.

Better Than a Tarot Deck!
I have used this book for TWENTY years and have found it to be much easier than using the Tarot. It is incredibly accurate and gives alot of information. If you are looking for something you can use everyday, this book is wonderful. It's great for daily and weekly readings.

The 12 Days of Christmas: A Pop-Up Celebration
Published in Hardcover by Little Simon (1996)
Author: Robert Sabuda

Collectible price: $58.24

A Joy for All Ages
The classic Christmas song is illustrated in all of its verses in this charming book. The pop-up pictures are delightful, and some of the depictions actually are exquisite, halfway between oragami and sculpture. The art is the work of a visionary. This is a lovely book for children, but adults really may appreciate it more than little ones do.

What an awesome book!
A wonderful version of the traditional song. There are many different folds and techniques used in this fairly compact book as well as interesting literary devices which lift this well out of the commonplace. Each odd numbered day of the song is given one and a half pages which are full of a miracle of cutting and folding.( apologies for the rhetoric but I LOVE this book ). The pages are in large blocks of colour which offset beatifully the mostly white pop-up creations and the, very different, white text. Each even-numbered day folds out from the half page left into an equivalent full page which is also coloured with white card pop-ups which are delicate paper cutouts All of the gifts are truly represented, but with a twist. All are also common gifts or images of a traditional Christmas. e.g The five Gold rings are shiny gold rings set on a white reindeer's antler-tips. The eight maids a-milking are Christmas cookies on a tray. The wonderful swans are in a snow-globe that also incorporates perspex through which we see not only the swans swimming , but also the snow falling! One has to look hard to find the eleventh lady dancing on the music box. The use of colour on each page is superb. Not one part of the book detracts from any other part. We are now all lookign forward to finding a copy of Sabuda's ABC book . This also has the same use of white cut-outs moving against a single colour background. There is so much that is excellent about this book that it would take a long time for the novelty to wear off. There are several layers to it and never does Sabuda seem to rely on the tricks of paper engineering to carry the book. It stands out in so many areas. With my children ( and others) we have readit, sung it, played with it, copied it and discussed the traditions behind the song and the gift versions in the book. Yet whenever it comes down off the shelf ( It is a seasonal treat or for rainy or sick days - or College assignments! ) everyone gets excited all over again.

A perfect book
This is the most beautiful, brilliant Christmas book I have ever seen. It is for all ages, not just 4-8. Sabuda pays attention not just to how the pop-up image looks when the page is open, but also to the way in which the image emerges. The simplicity of images, use of color, and imagination all combine to make this a perfect book.

Do you guys swim?
When I messed up my knee and found myself housebound for the summer I tried to look on the bright side- finally a chance to catch up on my reading. Fortunately, a good friend who "surfaced from out of the blue" gave me a copy of "Blue Road to Atlantis." Clearly, this has been the best book I've read this summer, and has made my recovery so much more enjoyable. It is extremely well written, adeptly mixing humor and little life-lessons. The author, Jay Nussbaum, demonstrates a keen sense of direction. After reading his book, I fully intend to "swim with the current."

Spiritual Fish? Yep.
This book is a delight. You won't believe that fish could be so interesting--so deep even (oops, now I'm punning like the book does!). It's a fun, quick read, and there are wonderful messages to be found about all sorts of life issues: from marriage to fighting. It's a pretty incredible little volume. Beyond expectations. It's really a perfect book to give as a gift.

I couldn't put it down
From childhood, I have always had a deep fascination for ocean life. The story's setting made the story very approachable for me. I received the book yesterday, and I finished it this morning! The words of Blue Road's simple tale flow as easily as water, and one can't help but feel swept away as you follow the adventures of two sea-dwelling friends.

"Blue Road to Atlantis" is a joyful reminder of one of the most profound lessons I have learned earlier in life: Be who you are. Doesn't make sense? Read the book! Sometimes one needs gentle reminders and this book did exactly that for me. For other readers, it may unlock a new perspective never before realized. This book introduces what I would say is the "tao" or the "zen" in "Old Man in the Sea", for reasons I invite you to find out for yourself. You'll be pleasantly surprised, touched and hopefully motivated to reflect on your own life and evaluate what your true path is.

Practical Huna Shamanism
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about huna shamanism. It's truly a lot of information packed into 12 chapters. You can read it again and again, and every time have new insights.
However, I also have some remarks:

The book is so full of information that for me -being Dutch, reading English- it was hard to keep track of it. King uses a lot of Hawaian words and I sometimes just had to stop reading to "let everything sink in". Ofcourse one could also consider this a good thing.

Sometimes King gave me the impression he tried to approach the subject from a scientific point of view. He compares shamanic principles with scientific principles in a way that -in my opinion- sometimes leads to inaccuracy; for example when he compares "grokking" (a shamanic skill) with mimicri, and than describes the latter as when animals mimic their environment. This is not scientifically accurate, since mimicry occurs when organisms try to mimic OTHER organism which are usually less tasty of potentially dangerous: Like flies mimicing wasps. Mimicing your environment is camouflage. I found more of these examples, which made me feel if King tried to confince me of his truth with scientific statements.

Last: Sometimes the explanations for how to do the excercises were a little to short for me. I have no background in shamanism, and was sometimes left in wonder about the "how to's" after reading the chapter. For example when King wrote that for grokking you need to enter a "spiritual body" (??) I had no clue if I was doing it right.
On the other hand, these short describtions challenge the reader to find out her/himself the best methods, which is a good thing in my opinion, and also part of Kings philosophy.

Conclusion: A very good book beginners guide to huna shamansism packed with loads of information that keep you thinking for a while. In fact, it kept me thinking for so long that I decided to buy it after my initial loan at the public library.

More about Huna than Shamanism
This book is more about Huna (a shamanic religion of Hawaii) than Shamanism.

If you are interested in Huna. this is one of the better books I have read.

If you are interested in Shamanism; I recommend the following.

"Secrets of Shamanism..."Jose and Lena Stevens

"Shamanism: as a spiritual practise..." Tom Cowan

"The Way of the Shaman" Michael Harner

Urban Shaman - a practical approach to shamanism
I have or am getting everything that Serge King has written.

I re-read this book about once a month and gain new insights every time. He covers everything from making your own ceremonies to divination to distant healing to harnessing energies of unknown origin. Serge King has no secrets. Every suggestion works, or at least everything I've tried. Every page has valueble information.

He seems to give the message "this works for me and this is why I think it works. now you go with it and make it yours." Although there is tradition in what he says, it isn't a dogmatic tradition.

Huna isn't a religion. There should be no conflict with any religion.

Is this really happening now?
While reading this book I couldn't be sure if what I was reading was in the book or in the headlines. Refernces to FEMA, messages from tele-evangelists, crises around the world, high level secret government meetings all seemed to be happening at the same time in real life as in the book. All I can say is, I hope this is my imagination and not for real.

A truly exciting revelation for the millenium
Mr. Hendricks has a unique theology/philosophy which melds spirituality and science fiction - or could it actually be non-fiction? As the story unfolds through the character development, the reader's interest is upheld to the end. Whether you believe that the author's theory could actually be truth - or not - the book will make you think about the possibilities.

Strong facts...outrageous theory...could this be true?
I have never read such a well researched and reference based book with such a non-traditional hypothesis. At first I thought, "no way" - but then, "maybe" and now YES! This is a must read - can't wait for the sequel!

Get up to speed with this book.
The Filmmaker's Handbook is a comprehensive guide to the art & science of filmmaking. Though it is currently falling abit behind with it's coverage of digital technology, as this is moving so fast it's hard for any book to stay current.

It has a lot of excellent information though, and goes into detail many other books lack. It's useful as a reference guide, and not so dry that it doesn't make an interesting read. If you are studying film, or want to get into the industry this book is a must have.

Fantastic Filmaking 101
I'm getting into film production but don't have time to attend a real film school. And I'm basically interested in the mechanics of filmmaking - so this book The Filmmkaer's Handbook is perfect.

It gets down to all the basics of filmmaking. If you want to know what a line producer does, how light meters work and the ratio of film stock to projection, this is the book for you.

It's thick but easy to read with nice B&W illustrations. As a novice and somebody who wants to know how a movie is made this book is perfect. I was really impressed by how simple and to the point this book was on the mechanics and made it an easy read. I will keep in hand at all times for reference as well!

Very well done and exactly what I was looking for in a filmmaking book!

For the beginner and the proffesional, this book has it all!
As an aspiring young filmmaker, the first thing I was told to do was go out and get a copy of the Filmmaker's Handbook. Imagine my surprise when I found out that the book had been updated in March of 1999, and that now it included all kinds of information about the digital age. I have learned so much from this book. The book goes over the entire film process, and does it in a straight-forward manner. It is a great start for beginners, yet it includes a rich amount of information for the professional. Anyone who has ever thought about a career in film really needs to get a copy of this book. Written in a manner that neither patronizes nor confuses the reader, the Filmmaker's Handbook is the best book I have skimmed or read on film, and believe me, I've looked at a lot.

The first "Hairy Maclary" book
This is the first of the "Hairy Maclary" books. And while it's not the best "Hairy Maclary" book (my favorites are HAIRY MACLARY'S RUMPUS AT THE VET, HAIRY MACLARY'S CATERWAUL CAPER, and SLINKY MALINKI), it's an essential "Hairy Maclary" book; it's the one where all the major characters are introduced. In fact, that's pretty much all the book is, an extremely entertaining introduction--and that's not a bad thing at all! We meet among others, Harry Maclary "from Donaldson's Dairy" (some sort of terrier), Bottomley Potts "covered in spots" (dalmation), and Muffin McLay "like a bundle of hay" (English sheepdog). Once the dogs are all introduced, they head to town where they run into Scarface Claw, "the toughest Tom in town", who frightens them all away. My son, who is two and a half, really loves this book. He is always on alert for Schnitzel von Krumms (dachschunds) and Muffin McLays when we go out for walks. Also, we've been inspired from time to time to make up our own rhymes about these dogs. Bitzer Maloney, for example, "loves to eat baloney". And Hercules Morse "eats roast beef, of course". It's hard not to love a book that can do all that for you!

A MUST HAVE
Lynley Dodd's rhyming text and pictures make for a fabulous read that will rank among your child's favorite read alouds if not THE favorite. My sister has been sending me Lynley Dodd's books directly from New Zealand for years and my kids STILL talk about them, repeating line after line of the memorized text from so many years ago and still enjoy hearing them as they are shared with their younger siblings. This is the first book of many with the same characters (Schnitzel von Krumm with a very low tum, Bitzer Maloney all skinny and bony, Bottomly Potts covered in spots, Hercules Morse as big as a horse, Muffin McLay like a bundle of hay and of course, Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy.) You will love these dogs. And you will also meet Scarface Claw. Great gifts.. holidays, birthdays, and births!

You'll love it too...
Kids love this "building" story - Hairy Macleary from Donaldson's Dairy (a tangley little black dog) goes for a walk, and is gradually joined by lots of other dogs with impossible rhyming names. The dogs increase until Disaster! - they meet Scarface Claw, the toughest tomcat in town. (A screetchy meow is necessary at this point.)

Lynley Dodd has a wonderful tumpity-tum rhythm throughout the book that makes it great fun to read. It also makes a good flannelboard for storytimes (not too many pieces to make, either).

The only caveat is that if you buy this book you will be made to read it over and over - although it's fun to try and remember all of the dogs' names: Schnitzel Von Krum (with a *very* low tum), Bottomley Potts (all covered in spots), Hercules Morse (as big as a horse)...

Ignore the editorial reviews above - they relate to "Hairy Macleary : rumpus at the vet" and "Dragon in a wagon"
