Parenting Power in the Early Years
A fantastic book for both parents and those planning in the near or distant future. Brenda Nixon's approach is easy to follow and understand. The book provides very practical tips on common problems, such as a child who bites or fears that you may not be a competent parent. It also leaves the reader feeling empowered, capable of raising a child no matter who you are. I highly recommend this book to all who are, or are thinking of becoming parents. I do not currently have children, but I feel more prepared now that I have read this for what may lie ahead. This will be a definate gift for all my pregnant friends!

Common Sense Advice
It's refreshing to read a parenting book written by someone who uses common sense and good values to raise children. This book is especially helpful for first time parents who don't quite know what to expect. Ms. Nixon answers many common questions and provides encouragement, motivation and sound advice to help any parent through those first few years of raising a child. I can't recommend this book highly enough!

Radio personality, Jonne Santoli praises Parenting Power
I have been a parent for 10 years to three wonderful boys. There have been times that I wish I could have had more information about raising children when they were younger. "Parenting Power The Early Years"helps with these crucial ages. The best advice I could give parents is to have more trust in themselves. You get so much advice as a first time parent it makes you question yourself. I know I did, but then by child 3 I said "OK, I understand what you are saying" but then I said to myself,"The kids are fine I am the parent so leave me alone!" Brenda Nixon's book wants parents to believe in themselves! Face it, being a parent is never easy, but this book is a resource that will help give you information maybe you didn't know about. I also like the book because I am a mom,and on the radio, and I do not have alot of extra time to read complicated textbook type writing. This is an easy read that is meant to simplify parenting not make it more complex. And believe me with 3 boys, I do not need more complexity in life!!

One of the Best!!!
Ok, the first time I read this book was for a 7th grade reading assignment-and that was well over 20 years ago, but this book has stayed in my heart ever since. Its a very well written story about a young girl who came over from England on the Mayflower and lived through the struggles that the Pilgrims went through in their first years of Plimouth Plantation. This is for the most part, a true story, written by Patricia Clapp, who's husband is an actual descendant of Constance. The story has adventure, romance and I felt the pain that these people went through during one of the most important times of our history. This book opened in me an interest in life in Plimouth. I was lucky enough to live in New England and visited the Plantation often. I highly recommend this book to young teens, as well as older. Somewhere I still have my copy (that I bought back when I was in 7th grade), and its a book that I would read again.

My very favorite book
I first read Constance last year when my 6th grade teacher recommended it. I adored it- the weekend I read it, Constance was my constant companion! I just finished reading it again and it was even better the second time through! I really feel like I bonded with Constance, and now I am doing as much research as I can on her. She was a real person, and as it says in the book, all the characters but one really existed. Through her diary, Constance tells of her journey across the Atlantic from London to Massachusetts, and gives wonderful details about the building and founding of Plymouth Colony. Through Constance I felt the pain of "the sickness" that claimed many lives during their first winter, became tangled in her complex love triangle, and felt outraged at the two men who tried to destroy Plymouth's peace. Constance was detailed, well written, interesting, exciting, and romantic. I would recommend this book to anyone, but I almost don't want to share it at all, since I feel like it's "my book"! This book found a very special place in my heart, and I wish I could thank Patricia Clapp for the many hours of contentment, excitement, and utter bliss she has given me! Constance is an exceptional read!

You don't have to be young to love this book
I first heard of about "Constance: A Story of Early Plymouth" in ninth grade from my friend. She implored me to read it. I was hesitant at first. I was a fairly advanced reader for my age, and this book had clearly been written for a younger audience. I trusted my friend's judgement, however. We had read "Anna Karenina" together the year before, so I knew that she had good taste in books. On a whim, I decided to read it. Once I had picked "Constance" up, I could not put it down.It was simply an enchanting, romantic story. Far from feeling to old to appreciate it, my maturity seemed almost a benefit. Constanc's boyfriends were the perfect romantic men. They reminded me of very simple versions of Mr. Darcy. This book appeals not only to fifth and sixth graders, but to adolescent girls as well. Any girl who likes pre-20th century romance novels will adore "Constance." The one thing I dislike about Constance is her shallow character. She is not exactly the feminist ideal of a woman. She is foolish and dependent. If one ignores this flaw, however, the book is thouroughly enjoyable. And you don't even have to be ten to like it!

RESULTS
I love this book for its simplicity (I guess thats where the "Cliff Notes" reference comes from) on how one can get fit at any age. Mr. Peirron is able to make the sometimes very confusing world of fitness, understandable, usable and humorous. From his "TNT" principles, psychological motivation, and real life experiences (he says he is a former fat guy), every page of this book has something to offer. Of the fitness books that I've read, Fit Happens ranks very high. Not from a technical standpoint, but on how user friendly it is. Congrats to this first time author, you have a slam dunk and "DREAM BIG"

Of Water and the Spirit
I just finished this book and I am hungry for much, much more. Malidoma Some's deep wisdom, wide vision, vulnerability and honesty stirred my soul so deeply. This book has awakened my yearning to re-connect with Nature and the Spirit world like no other I have read. I found his vivid, well-paced storytelling and the wisdom of his people utterly fascinating. I wish to thank the Dagara for being so generous in sharing their wisdom through this man. If I could give this book 20 stars, I would!!

This book is knowledgeable and thought provoking.
I enjoyed this book very much. It took me into a world that I knew existed, It is one of the best books that I have read about African culture. It is believeable and well written. Mr. Some takes you on the initiation along with him. I can feel as though I am there. It is a rights of passage that is unforgettable. I hope this books stays in print for a long time. It is easy reading.

Transcendence from an African Perspective
Any westerner who has ever wanted to know how an African thinks should read this book by Malidome Some. Because he was kidnapped out of his own culture and brought up in a Catholic seminary (where the priests wanted to turn out Black Christians prepared to go out and convert their fellows), Some was given the tools he needed to make an African sensibility understandable to a westerner. When he ran away from the Catholics and returned to his tribal home, he found that his family and fellow villagers saw him as so contaminated by his exposure to White ideology/learning that he was a danger to them. They gave him the option of undergoing the rite of initiation which boys usually go through in their 13th year. Some was 20 and he had to overcome his foreign-implanted mindset in order to survive the ordeal and become an initiate in his own tribe. The story begins with his close relationship with his grandfather, a tribal elder, when Some was only four years old. His earlier exposure to his grandfather's wisdom helped him survive the initiation. Some now straddles the two very different worlds and is living and teaching in California.

Black Stallion Rocks
This was a good book, but it had some parts I didn't like.I didn't like it when the owner of Black went to Alec's house and said that that was his horse. The author should have had the owner steal Black instead of telling Alec. The part I like was when Alec was racing on Black in the desert. The author used good details when describing Black.I enjoyed the fact Alec was the only one who can ride Black .I would recommened this book to anyone who loves horses.

If you can believe it, this is even better!
What a great story! I almost couldn't catch my breath during the racing narrative! Farley spins a wonderful tale of betrayal and true friendship here. The Black Stallion Returns is even tighter in plot and more moving with Alec and Black's friendship than the very first. Read this book! You will be happier! And you will fall in love with horses like I did.

This book keeps you hanging on every word!
The Black Stallion Returns

By Walter Farley

Adventure

Characters:

Alec is Black's owner. He loves horses. He is 14 years old. He has black hair and goes to high school. He loves Black a lot.

Black is a black stallion who Alec befriends after a shipwreck.

Henry is the short, stout, bowlegged trainer of Black. He also owns the stables Black lives in.

Mr. Volence is the owner of Sun Raider, a horse Black beat in racing. He thinks Black can improve the American racehorse.

Abu Ja' ben Ishak is Black's real owner. His hair is steel gray. His skin is tough, dry, and the color of mahogany.

Raj is about 12 years old. He guides Alec's group through the desert. He has never known his family.

Tabari is Abu's daughter. She is about 15 years old. She is very beautiful. She loves her father a lot.

The Setting:

The book takes place in Henry's stables and Alec's house in the suburbs of New York, and in Arabia.

The Plot:

Someone tries to kill Black. The next day, a man shows up and claims to be Black's real owner. They find out he is telling the truth and he takes Black to Arabia. Henry, Alec and Mr. Volence follow him to Arabia where they learn about a conflict between Abu's tribe and a neighboring tribe. The conflict is that supposedly Abu killed his best friend, who happened to be the leader of the neighboring tribe. The son of the dead leader is very vengeful. Someone re-steals Black. Abu's and the neighboring tribe are about to go to war because Abu's tribe thinks the other tribe stole Black. Alec and Raj find out the truth and save Black. The man who kidnapped Black gets away, but his men did not. Alec and Raj help make the Tribes friends again and Raj finds his family. They hold a big race like every year. During the race the man who kidnapped Black tries to shot Black. Instead, the others tribe leader shot the man. At the end of the race the other tribe's leader who was riding for his tribe and Alec, who was riding for Abu's tribe, were racing their horses neck and neck. Black and Alec win by a small space. At the end, Tabari marries the chief of the other tribe. The tribes make peace and Abu promises Alec he will get Black's first son.

My favorite scene is when Alec meets Tabari because she is very nice and talks to Alec. I also like it when Alec meets Abu's tribe because it is all new for Alec and he behaves very nicely even though he is impatient to see Black. My two favorite characters are Raj and Tabari. I like Raj because he shows independence and he is very nice and wishes he knew his family. He wants to help Alec and be friends with him. I like Tabari because she is nice, beautiful, shows lots of independence and makes her own decisions. I recommend this book to horse or animal lovers. I also recommend it for mystery lovers. I think people should read this because it is full of adventure, mystery, horses, and Alec's thoughts. It is a wonderful book. It makes you feel like you are in the book. I think all my friends should read this. It truly is an excellent book. I would rate this book a 10 because it shows a boy's love for a horse and how he struggles to get his horse back when it is taken from him. I think Walter Farley did a wonderful job writing it. I would also give this book a ten because it keeps you wondering what happens next. Walter Farley keeps you hanging on his every word.

BLAST OFF GETS YOU THERE IN STYLE
I think when I first started reading BLAST OFF I was 40 some years old. When I finished I was 10. This is the most imaginative, happy, rootin'; tootin', star shootin', toy studded gala blast of colorful plastic nostalgia you're likely ever to see. if you recall thoase leggy femmes, sleek line space ships, gleaming colorful plastic space toys, guns and fabntastic comics, this book is for you. Cleverly written and segmented into gorgeous chapters, these Mark and Mike guys have really put together a wonderful chapter to all our lives. The intro by megastar harlan Ellison alone is worth the price of admission, wait till you get to the playsets and toys! BUY IY and BUY IT NOW! Books like this pay you back a hundred times over.

This Book Has it All
Blast Off! does what other collector's books only pretend to do. Collector books usually center around value guides, and pass themselves off as glorified shopping lists for toy shows and antique malls. Other books forego any knowledge of the subject whatsoever, and go with photographic essays of the nostalgia craze. A third sort of book tells long stories about growing up in some bygone era. All three sorts of books have, understandably a small readership and limited popular appeal.

The authors of Blast Off!, on the other hand, did the hard work of writing a real book, somehow combining it with the best photos and graphics I've seen in a collector's book, and sprinkling in enough anecdotes and oral histories to keep it interesting. This book is a major effort from an accomplished team: a knowledgeable collector, a lively writer, and an avid fan and history buff--the last being Mike Richardson, publisher of Dark Horse comics and owner of the Things from Another World sci-fi comic shops.

Blast Off! launches itself as an overview/ intro to the golden age of space toys, but its appeal is really wider than that. This is a book collectors will want, not simply to locate market values for haggling at the junk shop, but to remind them what they like about their hobby. Beautiful and imaginative graphics evoke the promise and wonder of the space age, but the book is so lively and informative I had to read it twice: once to read the captions and look at the pictures, and again just enjoying the text.

It's impossible to overstate how great this book is. The photographs are incredibly clear and bright, and the subject matter is drawn from endlessly rich collections. Books like this tend to fall through the cracks--not really appealing to the general reader, and yet not in-depth enough for the collector. But a reader from the first category who casually glances at this book may find a new interest, and seasoned collectors may find rarities they didn't know existed. Every era has volumes that define it; for the space age, that would be Blast Off!

Blast off a fantasy come true
BLAST OFF is not only a beautiful book to behold it is researched by and with the help of fans who love the space toys of the 30's, 40's and 50's. The team at Dark Horse has given space toy fans a bookmark in the history of childhood toys.

BLAST OFF includes photos and information on toys inspired from the space heroes of Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon to the Space Opera heroes of Space Patrol, Tom Corbett, Rocky Jones and other role models of the 1950's. There are chapters on the English toys and the robots from Japan along with well-researched sections and chapters on the makers of the space toys of our childhood, Archer, Marx and Pyro. Many of the toys displayed in this book are rare and hard to find items that have not been seen before now.

However, the backbone of the book is the interviews with collectors and fans of space toys. Why we remember and kept these playthings of our childhood is as interesting as the fantastic photos and ads that are generously spread throughout the book.

I found that I would move back and forth between chapters, reading about the toys that I remembered but had not seen in many years. It brought back many good memories along with information and research that should be saved and shared with future generations.

A must have book for any science fiction or space toy collector. Thank you Dark Horse Books and the creative team of Mark, Steve and Mike for bringing us this fantastic slice of childhood back to life. I hope BLAST OFF stays in print for many years to come as a reference point in the history of not just toys but SPACE TOYS!!!!

Florence Harding: First Lady the Jazz Age and the Death of America's Most Scandalous President

Surprisingly good! A thoroughly fascinating, literate read.
Never would I have thought that a book about the wife of Warren Harding, a president largely dismissed as the worst in U.S. history, would be so entertaining, absorbing, and historically valuable. Not only does it provide in-depth analyses of the scandals, the controversy surrounding Warren's death, and the political climate of the times, but the book presents a strong woman clearly ahead of her time. In addition, the author provides a wealth of detail, especially relating to Harding's progressive views, that I had never seen anywhere else. I thank the author for bringing this period in our history to light and giving all history buffs new ideas to ponder. After all, we've seen countless books on Lincoln, Jefferson, and FDR, and while Harding is light years away from them, it is still refreshing to learn about the neglected figures of the past.

Superb Biography of an Underrated First Lady
Staggeringly detailed, Anthony's first-rate biography of First Lady Florence Harding shines a brilliant, sympathetic spotlight on a modern, progressive, intelligent woman whose persona and achievements have been overlooked and underappreciated for far too long. President Harding himself has been an obscure figure for too much of this century, and Anthony's book helps to make the achievements and monumental failures of his administration more accessible and understandable to the average reader. The paralells to more recent Presidents and their spouses only serve to underline just how "modern" and ground-breaking were the roles played by Harding and his wife. A host of colorful historic characters are clearly brought to life by Anthony, including some notable females such as Alice Roosevelt Longworth and Evalyn Walsh McClean, the warm-hearted dissapated owner of the fabled Hope Diamond. In all, Anthony weaves a colorful portrait of a small town girl who rose, despite incredible odds and near insurmountable trajedies, to a position of incredible power and influence. Clearly a life worth re-examining, and a beautifully written biography of interest to any reader who enjoys American History.

A scholarly book that reads like a thriller!
In this biography of Florence Harding, Carl Anthony portrays an unfogettable cast of colorful and shady individuals who continued to influence American politics long after the Hardings' brief tenure. What a treat to read a page-turner that is also impeccably researched, richly annotated, and painstakingly attributed! The characters, especially the Hardings and their intimates, are deeply drawn with both compassion and accuracy, leaving the reader to form his own judgments. The machinations of politics are described in chilling detail. Anthony takes advantage of newly available material to answer mysteries which have long shadowed the Harding legacy, in a way no previous author could have done. The book is not without its shortcomings. In some places, the verbiage is thickly entangled, with absurd grammatical errors ("Late into the warm spring night poker games, illuminated by strings of tiny white bulbs, the popular songs of Tin Pan Alley and racing pieces in the new jazz sound wafted as far out as Evalyn's new greenhouses as she cranked the Victrola.") Anthony's descriptions of Mrs. Harding's medical problems make little sense in terms of today's knowledge. Also, I feel he employs an exaggerated sense of melodrama in relating the circumstances of Harding's death. However, compared to the other Harding literature I've read, this is far away the best-researched and most objective. Overall--one of the best books I've read on politics, the Jazz Age, and the hypocrises of public life.

To wash him is to know him
The book I read was Harry the Dirty Dog. I like this book because of the illustrations. The dog in the story is cute. I also like the plot of the story. The dog doesn't like to have baths. He runs away and gets dirty. He is so dirty his family does not recognize him. Finally he begs for a bath and gets one. His family realizes it is him.

Sweet dog, sweet family, sweet story
I love the Harry the Dirty Dog series! A great story for kids and adults who like to read a good children's book.

Harry is an adorable white dog with black spots (as is repeated throughout all of the Harry books)... and he's always getting dirty. His entire family loves him and he loves them right back. Even when he's dirty, Harry is still family... which makes a great parable for parents explaining to their children that while they may not be happy when their kids mess up, they are still loved nonetheless.

The illustrations of this happy dog frolicking around are absolutely precious. The story is endearing and I have my copy sitting on my coffee table.

Harry the dirty dog is a classic kid's story
I remember reading this book when I was in school and I always enjoyed it.

Harry takes off from his family, and gets so dirty they don't recognize him. He has a fun time around town, but when he realizes his family does not know him, he needs to have a bath to prove that he is their dog.

This is a cute story, which my 7 year old loves to read over and over. A five star read for kids of any age.

Life After Life

Author: Raymond A., Jr. Moody

Collectible price: $3.99
Average review score:

You MUST read this book - it will change your life!
Whether you are a(n) Christian, Jew, Hindu, Buddist, Muslim, Deist, Atheist, Agnostic (etc..), or if you have ever lost a loved one, this is a must read! The author Moody is unbiased and straightforward in his style, and it is an eminently readable book. This book contains a compliation of factual after death experiences of a number of totally unrelated case studies, and the similarities are absolutely striking in many cases. This book deals with topics (as experienced in the case studies) such as: the phenomenon of death, the experience of dying, after death experiences, a being of "light" (Wow!), the various explanations that have been postulated, and the most prominent questions regarding Dr. Moody's research (and much more!). This book is absolutely FASCINATING! This is not just some new age bunch of theoretical garbage, but a published version of an extensive study that seems to have been very scientific and professional. Whether you are into Plato, Aurelius, Jesus, Nietchze, Hume, Aquinas, Dembski, or just Homer Simpson and King of the Hill, PLEASE READ THIS BOOK, and then encourage others to do so as well! ... You will not regret reading this book!... In addition, the version that I have contains both "Life after Life" and "Reflections on Life After Life," which is basically a more recent and updated version of the same subject (but with new info and research, including the documentation of the experiences of those who, after temporarily "dying" clinically, learned about: what happens to those who commit suicide, a "city of light", "judgment", "bewildered spirits"; as well as reactions from the ministry). I strongly exhort you to read both books; the follow-up book is not at all superfluous. It is just as interesting as the first book, and they need to be read together for the complete effect. You don't have to be some detached philosophical thinker or a theologian to appreciate this awe-inspiring study; you only have to be a person who is curious about what happens when (and after) you die! Read, enjoy, and LEARN from it! ...

One of the pioneer writers on life beyond death
In 1974 after experiencing a very powerful marriage encounter weekend, I had a spiritual encounter with my deceased step dad who had passed away in October of 1973. I also experienced a great love from my step dad, Marcel , followed by the same great love from my father Alfred (died in 1944) and than a tremendous overwhelming love from God, our Father. Arms enveloping me all three together as one being. Having been terribly afraid of death and not believing that I was good enough to receive eternal life, this experience gave me the answer to the question of life after life. At that same moment I was lifted above the couch, saw my non-moving body on the couch, saw my funeral procession with my children, husband and tried to get up from the couch and could not until I truly believed that if I let go of my self-centeredness I would be free. I immediately remembered that my 2 year old daughter, Lisa was napping and told myself that I needed to come back to take care of her. I came across Raymond Moody's book and was relieved to realize that others had had the same experience as I and it gave me great comfort. Other books to lightened up the journey are Death: The Final Stage of Growth by Dr. Kubler-Ross and Carl Jung's Memories, Dreams, Reflections.

A wonderful gift for the bereaved.
This book is a wonderful gift for our recently bereaved friends, or those who have not yet accepted the loss of a loved one. It is compatible with most religious outlooks and doctrines. This very original work is a joy to read, and is a great solace and comfort to anyone who has ever had to deal with death of friend or family. Insights are given as to the true nature of death as a sequel to life, and the reality of a glorious afterlife. Largely due to improvements in medical technologies, many people are now brought back from near-death, often with reports of their experiences upon entering and glimpsing another world just over the threshhold between life and death...Their first hand reports are thrilling. The manner in which Dr. Moody presents these experiences, shared with him over the years by his patients, is sensitive and meaningful, never morbid or frightening. Upon completion, the reader may well exclaim, "Death, where is thy sting?". This is a "must read"!
