INTENSELY COMPELLING!
For 6 long years, Trenton Kingsley, Duke Of Broddington, has awaited the day when he could avenge his beloved father's death. Returning from self-imposed exile, he strikes at the man he holds responsible - Baxter Caldwell - at his most vulnerable moment and walks away with Baxter's innocent 18 year old sister, Ariana.

Ariana, forced to marry the man whom she has been led to believe was somehow to be blamed for her elder sister's apparent suicide 6 years before, is caught in a voltex of a devious and malicious deception. While Ariana is irresistibly drawn to her husband's passionate and gentle nature, she must resolve the mystery that shrouds the past in order to have a future together. And in uncovering the truth, it became apparent that her brother is involved in a nefarious scheme to exact the ultimate vengeance at the expense of her happiness.

Echoes In The Mist is a captivating romance culminating in a stunning revelation that's bound to keep the reader glued until the last page is turned.

Andrea Kane writes a convincing transition of Trenton's character from darkly menacing to gentle loving husband and Ariana is not merely the sweet innocent that's portrayed initially but a fiercely determined woman who's so much in love with her husband.

A Touching Story
Trenton Kingsley is a haunted soul looking for the time that he can avenge things that were done to his family.

Ariana is a naive but sweet girl who still believes in the good of people. She is also just what Trenton needs.

Ariana's past is connected to Trenton's past in a way that she is about to find out in a shocking way. Trenton sees one of the ways to pay back her brother is to have the queen order Ariana to become his wife. She does marry Trenton and begins to tame the demons that haunt him. This story is about two people who are both strong and and protective. It is also about faith in love and in each other.

This is classic Andrea Kane at her best. Don't miss this one.

Amazing Love Story
This is my second book my Andrea Kane and I just loved it. The way she developed the love between Trenton and Ariana was wonderful. Ariana was a great female character. The way she stood by Trenton even when her brother tried to make him look bad in her eyes was heartwarming. Trenton was a wonderful man because no matter how mad he got he was always able to let it go so that he wouldn't hurt Ariana. Great job!!

Quit Smoking for Good: A Supportive Program for Permanent Smoking Cessation (Personal Power)

It worked!
Almost 11 months quit! The most helpful parts, for me, dealt with the mental and emotional sides of addiction. I smoked to avoid feeling stress or unwanted emotions, and this book has a lot to offer in that area.

Willpower-Who Needs It?
I had little to no willpower when it comes to cigarette smoking but luckily, I didn't need any to quit with this program. I just had to practice not smoking, but I never felt deprived because I only had 4 practice sessions a day which only lasted a couple of minutes to a half hour max. So the exercises helped alot, especially the ones which taught me how to deal with my stress without cigarettes.

Thank you!
Thank you Andrea Baer. This book finally gave me the inspiration to quit

Perfect
Well organized, complete, nontrivial, wealth of sample code, interesting historical notes, good index. Magnificent work. Definitely worth the money.

Showing its age, but still has a lot to offer
For nearly a decade this book has been the definitive reference on transaction processing. Although the more recent, May 2001 book titled "Transactional Information Systems: Theory, Algorithms, and the Practice of Concurrency Control" by Gerhard Weikum and Gottfried Vossen will probably supplant this book as the standard reference, there is still much material that makes this book useful.

In particular, this book covers the following topics in more depth than the newer boom cited above:
- Fault tolerance and availability, both topics are covered in depth from hardware and software perspectives. This is unique for a book on transaction processing in that most books on the subject confine their scope to software and databases.

- A wide and complete survey of transaction models. True, some of this material is about models that are falling into disuse, but the value is the way the authors go deeply into the mechanics. I've always felt that this part of the book is the most valuable because the principles can be refactored into hybrid models. Moreover, comparing this material with the newer book by Weikum and Vossen shows that these principles are still employed in today's TP solutions.

Material about transaction processing monitors is obviously out of date, but, like the TP models, the principles still apply to contemporary systems. My recommendation is if you are going to buy a single book on the topic get the Weikum and Vossen I cited in the first paragraph. However, if your budget allows, I also highly recommend this book as well because of the depth in which fault tolerance and TP models are covered. If you want to just learn the basics of TP I recommend that you consider "Principles of Transaction Processing" by Philip A. Bernstein and Eric Newcomer because it is less daunting than this or the Weikum and Vossen book (both of which are 1100+ pages).

The bible of transaction processing
I used this book as a CS grad student in college
for a class on transaction based systems and it covers
how to do transactions from top to bottom. Although
it was published in 1993 the techniques described in this
book are actually more advanced than techniques
used in a lot of real world systems today so it is not
out dated. I have yet to see a book as comprehensive as
this on how to actually implement transactions. Good
book for software engineers to read. My only complaint
is that the book has a lot of typos and some bugs in the
source code listings. Also because the book is so damn big
(i.e. lot of pages) they chose to use very thin paper which
makes it not very good for using hilight markers on. Still
this is the definitive book on how to implement transaction
processing.

Best book I have ever read !
I am not really a reader, but there was something about this book that completely captured my attention. It was given to me one day and once I started reading it, I noticed I coulnd't let go of it. It is very good because you can picture everything that is going on. It also informs you of things that you wouldn't never possibly thought that could go on in a country. This is defenately the best book I have ever read. Let's see if Wilfredo can write another capturing work like this. I hope so, I'll be the first one to purchase it.

A WORK OF ART AND POETRY FROM A NEW EMERGING LATINO WRITER
IT GAVE ME MUCH JOY BEING A STUDENT WHO IS CURRENTLY MAJORING IN POLITICAL SCIENCE WITH A MINOR IN LATIN AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN STUDIES TO READ SUCH WORK OF ART. I'VE HAD THE FORTUNATE OPPORTUNITY TO READ MANY WORKS BY LATINO/LATINA WRITERS, BUT NOTHING HAS MOVED ME MORE THEN THE WORK OF WILFREDO ARGUETA. HE HAS SUCCESSFULLY GIVEN A VOICE TO THOSE THAT TEND TO BE VOICELESS IN LATIN AMERICA, PARTICULARLY CHILDREN OF WAR. THROUGH HIS WORK HE HAS GIVEN A HUMAN TOUCH TO THE HARDSHIP, POVERTY AND REALITY THAT HAS PLAQUED MUCH OF EL SALVADOR DURING ITS CIVIL WAR AND CONTINUES TO PLAQUE IT TODAY. AND BEING THAT MY MOTHER IS SALVADORIAN AND HAVING VISITED EL SALVADOR SEVERAL TIMES, DURING ITS CIVIL WAR, THIS BOOK HAS TRULLY HIT HOME, EXPOSING THE REALITY AND STRUGGLE SALVADORIANS HAVE ENDURED DURING THEIR CIVIL WAR, THROUGH THE EYES OF A CHILD. THIS BOOK TRULLY SHOWS THE BEGINNING OF A NEW WAVE OF POLTICALLY MOTIVATED YOUNG LATINO WRITERS, WILFREDO ARGUETA BEING ONE OF THEM!

Couldn't put it down
The purpose of this review is to congratulate the author on a creative and poignant piece of work. For those of you who have read the book, you will agree that it is an insight into the trials and tribulations of emigrating from any war-torn country. For those of you who have not read the book, get one - you will not be disapppointed.

I am very proud of Will, his achievements, his tenacity and most of all his perserverence in achieving whatever he wants to achieve in life, regardless of whether or not it is against the flow.

Much love Will,

Your friend down under.

LIKE PLANTING AND TENDING A GARDEN!
As a counsellor, I have found many individuals discover "anticipating retirement" and "living in retirement" are two very different things. In the next ten years, I, too, will be "growing up" and facing this new chapter of my life. However, there are so many plans for my future, I only hope my health, financial resources and stamina will allow me to fulfill these ambitions. To me, retirement is like planting and tending a garden. First, one must plan carefully (you do not want to waste your precious years on activities that do not bring you joy and fulfillment.) Then, one should decide what plants (projects, hobbies, activities) to sow, not only to keep you physically active, but metally alert. Finally, one must lovingly tend that garden (nourish the soul, maintain physical health, and weed the emotional clutter from the past.) If you have lost a spouse, partner or soul-mate during this planting season, it is important to grieve, but it is equally important to know when to let go and when it is time to plant a new garden. Remember, time waits for no one. Only then, will one be prepared to start the next chapter of their life. We all need to have hopes, goals and dreams, no matter what our age.

In this book, the author points out the positive ways of dealing with change and how to plan and approach this new period in the lifecycle. Anyone approaching mid-life can certainly benefit from this book; it is never to soon to plan for the future. If you are already into your retirement years, this book may be just the inspiration you need if the years are not as challenging and fulfilling as you anticipated. The author has a lot to say on the subject and it is a great book based on sound advice.

Hits the Nail on the Head
As a mid-sixties professional who retired about five years ago from my own business, and then found myself in a true depression until I sought help, I found this book remarkably acute regarding the questions that I should have thought to ask myself, the planning I should have done, and the problems that would arise for me when I no longer had the structure of my working life to support me. Doctor Cantor's amazing understanding of the dynamics of retirement has helped me immeasurably to understand myself in what is an exciting but very complicated period, and her practical advice is advice I wish I had had before I retired!! I cannot imagine anyone approaching the later stages of life who would not benefit enormously from Dr. Cantor's insights and help. GET THIS BOOK!

lifesaver
Dr. Cantor has written a brilliant analysis of the fears of facing retirement, and how to plan for a meaningful life after work ends. I keep giving this book to friends who are looking for more for their anticipated leisure than bridge and golf. Dr Cantor outlines practical ways to figure out our strengths and interests to craft together a blueprint for the last third of our lives.

Intense reading
This collection of interviews with Flanagan and his wife along with some of his creative work is a great tribute to a man who had so much to overcome and did it in a way that most of society could not understand. It would have been easy for someone to give up or to become self focused, but Flanagan used his body and his mind to push himself, push his illness, and try to educate the rest of the world about his struggle and about kink. A lot of what is written and shown will disturb you, it should distrub you, but you'll walk away thinking he was a very brave man.

Super-masochist is super straightforward
Meet Bob Flanagan, devoted SM enthusiast and cystic fibrosis patient. Andrea Juno and V. Vale collected a series of intervies with Flanagan and his partner/mistress Sheree Rose about his life and their alternative lifestyle choices. Flanagan is a poet, writer, performance artist and musician, along with trying to create a 24/7 submissive and masochistic life scenario with Rose, all while trying to survive the ever increasing damage to his lungs and body from cystic fibrosis. He fights his pain with pain, and overall, has a very powerful, rich life. The presentation of such intense erotic detail comes across as natural and normal in the relaxed conversations of Vale and Juno with Flanagan, his friends and family.

Bob. What a guy.
Bob was definately out there. And that's coming from a musician who lives in NY. The mold was certainly destroyed when he was made.

SICILIAN RECIPE FOR MYSTERY
Dependent on it's moody likable Inspector Montalbano whose Sicilian mannerisms and bohemian lifestyle carry and lie at the heart of this mystery, "The Terra-Cotta Dog" is a leisurely and fascinating journey through the streets and countryside of Sicily as the Inspector solves a mystery of preserved corpses found in a cave. It's the Inspector's love of art and music, his disdain and attraction to modern media, and his commitment to fine Italian cuisine which keeps these pages turning as the mystery itself brews as tempting as a slow cooked pasta sauce. The excitement wanes a bit as the book propels into climax which amounts to a conversation resolving all issues, but it's the time spent with the reserved yet crusty and good-hearted Inspector which makes "The Terra-Cotta Dog" so enjoyable.

Utterly Charming!
The second Inspector Montalbano book to appear in English (following The Shape of Water) begins with a high-level Mafia figure arranging for his own arrest by Montalbano and a seemingly innocuous nighttime heist from a grocery store. However nothing is simple in Sicilian underworld, and soon Montalbano's curiosity has him looking into the heist as he desperately avoids getting a promotion for his high-profile arrest. When this leads to the discovery of bodies sealed up fifty years ago in a strange tableau, the Inspector becomes determined to unravel the mystery of their death.

As in the first book, the main pleasure comes from watching him elegantly glide through this old crime, digging up the dirt from WWII, when the Allies drove the German and Italian forces off the island. Camilleri is old enough to recall those times, and his firsthand knowledge seeps through the voices of the old-timers Montalbano interviews. Meanwhile, he's also dealing with his long-distance girlfriend who just wants to go on vacation with him, and the troubles of his beautiful Swedish friend. He's an entertaining hero, realistic about what he can do within the constraints of the highly political and corrupt system, and willing to bend rules himself, but always tempered with compassion and empathy. Another deftly translated and beautifully understated mystery that gives a very tangible sense of Sicily.

Note: Throughout the book, the Inspector is reading one of Spanish author Manuel Vasquez Montalban's Pepe Carvalho mysteries.

Eating and thinking one's way around Sicily.
After reading Camilleri's "The Shape of Water" I was eager to read this one. Camilleri topped himself. The food, the characters, the plot, the food, the history and mythology, the food, the language, oh yes, did I mention the food. I couldn't help thinking what a pleasure it would be to meet Signor Camilleri, preferrably in Siclia, at dinner. Bravissimo.

pick it up, smash it down
From the catchy refrain to the charming artwork by Dan Yaccarino, this book is a delight. Mr. Gilly goes through town picking up trash everywhere, and at the end of the story, he's the last thing that needs cleaning. My 2 1/2 year old loved this book immediately, requesting rereads 20 times. That is a great sales pitch and one worthy of noting. This book will catch your young one's attention immediately--it's that good.

For Your Little Truck Enthusiast!
What a wonderful find! I first borrowed this book from our local library, and ended up purchasing it. My son fell in love with it immediately. I read it to him the first few times, and then he began joining in the fun. His favorite thing to do was yell "stop!", "no!" and "yes!" while pointing to the appropriate words. So, not only are the colorful illustrations entertaining and bright, but the book can also help your child start to recognize simple words! I would highly recommned this book to everyone!

Highly Entertaining
I can't say enough good things about this book. I got this book for my son when he was about fourteen months old (he's now 2 1/2) He has loved it from the begining. First because it was about garbage trucks and then because of its entertaining repetitiveness. Soon we would hear him shout "Stop! Mr. Gilly emptied all the cans from behind the doctors office". Now he can practically read this book to us by looking at the pictures. Great fun for the whole family!

Book of My Special Goddesses
The interviews are very excellent and thorough and you really get to know more about these women more from it. I felt invisible threads weaving in and out of the book and inside and outside of me, forming some unexplainable connection to these women. My sculpture teacher Jeniifer Pastor made some comment on how women performance artists have such good photogenic bodies and sort of questioned the their feminist nude poses in the pictures (such as Caroles Schneemann's photo "Body Collage, 1968" on page 72 of the book), and I passively-aggressively thought inside ...I agree with you, they are beautiful! They are in charge of the messages from their bodies in their space..they are not passive to the male gaze... I admire these women for all they have done for women artists..This book is good because afterwards I explored these artists further through their individual works whether it is music or a book or a video. My performance art class barely covered these artists so I decided to learn more about them on my own and these interviews helped out alot.

Essential Reading
This book should be required reading in any discipline. A wonderful introduction to an array of artists who challenge the conventions of society, because they believe that iniquity does not equal freedom.

burn the ivory towerists
This book presents many unique ideas on being a woman. Juno interviews a variety of artists on life, sexuality, sensuality... femininity and masculinity. From the cultural critiques of bell hooks to Annie Sprinkle's smiling cervix, new brilliance and hope is imparted. If you are looking for inspiration and wisdom from activists by trade, rather than some ivory tower dworkinite, look no further.

Best science experiment book for the under seven set
My five year old loves the idea of doing science experiments, so I have purchased three or four science books geared for kids her age. This is the best one that I have seen. The activities are fun and easy to do. Almost all of them require only materials that are readily available in the average household. Most take under half an hour from start to finish. The reason that I gave the book only four stars and not five is that the poems themselves are not great. Bottom line: the science experiments are terrific, but the book is not a great read.

Easy-to-Do Projects That Kids Love
I bought this for my 5-year-old daughter and she loves it. It has many classic children's science projects, like making a tornado using two soda bottles, and all of the projects use common materials and are easy to do. They are just right in length and complexity for her age.

Great poems and science projects for kindergarten teachers!
I just went to the California Kindergarten Conference and saw this book presented. There is a poem and a science project for each letter of the alphabet. They are simple, hands-on experiments and very affordable for the K-1 teacher.
