Totally Delightful!
We first found Brian Andreas' work in a charming shop in Cambria, California. We gave this book as a gift to our 86 year old mother. She loves it, as we do. Something to sit down with and know that it will warm your heart and bring a smile to your face. Mr. Andreas brings a new perspective to the simple and the complex situations in life. A must buy for the New Year!

Why don't you have this book already?!?
Brian Andreas is one of the most uniquely talented people out there, and this book is a great starting point for appreciating his work. Within 5 minutes of picking up this book, you want to call everyone you know and tell them to run to the nearest bookstore for a copy of their own. You can read this book every day and still discover something new every time. No matter what mood you're in, there's a story to match it. Buy this book...and then buy all the rest of Brian's books, too.

Story People
A person is confined to his/her individual perception of the world. It's like we all have a welder's mask with only a pinhole through which to view reality. Whenever we can widen our perspective it is, indeed, liberating - it feels good. We can only do this by borrowing another person's peep hole. Brian Andreas' is a kaleidoscope. He generously shares his with us in his short little stories and primative, detailed drawings. "Story People" liberates, invigorates and widens worlds. Smile, laugh, and wonder. Have a peep.

Informative Book
This book is perfect for beginners and those that already now the basics and want to advance further. It has many examples and is written in a intelligent manor. If you are advanced in VRML you may still benefit from this book however when it comes to scripting and adding Java to your 3d worlds you will need to invest in other books.

Great Book!
Doesn't take you through the subject in the conventional manner. After the first couple of intro chapters, you can then easily delve into any other chapter for what you need. Very useful as a reference once you understand the basics. A bit weak on using scripts to control and interact with VRML worlds. Other than this minor gripe, a great book.

An Important Book to Read
Bashert by Andrea Simon is not only a labor of love and a remarkable gift to those who came before and will follow, it is an important addition to Holocaust literature, describing events that may not have come to light before. The events are described in a very readable and personal form.

What makes this book especially moving is the way the author weaves her personal story into her search for historical fact. It is the author's personal involvement, warmth and humanity that draw the reader in and create a sense of personal involvement for the reader. We are not just reading history, but being taken along on the author's quest for knowledge and truth. We share her hunger to know what happened to her lost family.

For those with personal experience or knowledge of the Holocaust, this will add; for others it is a good place to start. It is a remarkable personal odyssey which will leave the reader affected and transformed.

Never To Be Forgotten
Andrea Simon has written a memoir filled with haunting memories. I found her descriptions so realistic, her feelings so intense that I was transported to the time and place of her ancestors. It became clear as I turned the pages that what began as the author's personal journey ended as a reminder to all readers, of events never to be forgotten.

an outstanding experience
The importance of family makes the biggest impression on me after reading this powerfully written literary book. The horrors that Simon's family experienced in the Holocaust bring that atrocity home in a profound way. Her personal journey becomes our journey with her as she discovers atrocities such as the killing of 50,000 Jews in mass graves, simply because they were Jewish. Making the reading even more insistent is her grandmother's voice which we hear throuought the book, urging her on and being with her. Being able to read a Holocaust account of one family, with photos of relatives past and present, puts the reader inside the family, as if this were your own family album, and an account and discovery of your own relatives. Evil such as the Holocaust gives us all pause and reaffirms the need to pray for God and goodness to prevail in all times, even now. While some people have a family tree that they borrow from family members, Simon's family has something much greater. They are so very lucky to have a relative who puts together a detailed family experience, researches its important past, and delivers it to present and future generations. Simon's grandmother and mother must certainly be very proud of her. Proud, too, must be her living relatives who can now hold in their hands such an intelligent, eloquent and profoundly moving account of their family. As outsiders,we are fortunate to have the opportunity to experience that family, and to acknowledge again the horrors of the Holocaust, through Beshert.

Utterly jaw-dropping
The Andreas Gursky exhibition at MoMA (and beyond) and its attendant book will be remembered as one of the biggest splashes that a photographer has made in the art world in nearly a decade.
His mentors Bernd and Hilla Becher devoted decades to the formulaic documentation of industrial archetypes. Gursky takes a similarly cool precisionist vision and blows it up to satelite simulcast proportions: everything is saturated color, super-scaled and hyper-detailed in this collection of hyper-mega-super-synthetic 'modern world as lurid theme-park' landscapes. His depiction of discount stores, sports arenas, hotel lobbies and stock markets are so crisply rendered that every dollar sign and pock-marked cheek are clearly seen. Images haven't had this kind of imformation density since Jackson Pollock was at his height. Then he follows it with images of such minimalist austerity as to turn a Prada boutique into an object of Zen contemplation. As his work has evolved, Gursky has made increasing use of digital manpulation to clean-up and enhance his environments. But it hardly serves qualify the veracity of these artificial spaces. This is our age with the volume turned to high shriek.

At Last: -a book that does justice to Gursky's work
Again and again, devotees of Gursky's work find themselves struggling to describe the sheer physical impressiveness of his prints. Pristine, perfect and awe-inspiring as they are; they ... in the viewer, challenging one to see more, to make sense of this information overload.

Previous coffee-table monographs on Gursky failed pitifully to convey the experience of viewing his finest work: such as the retrospectives at the Tate Liverpool (UK) or this latest show at MOMA NY -from which this book arises.

This MOMA book succeeds where others have failed: thanks to its designer's skill in taking portions -sometimes very small portions- of Gursky's images and placing them in the book as visual puzzles. They challenge the reader to recognise what they are, from which images -and where they belong. They also serve as an implicit yard-stick. "my God" the reader realises, "if this double page spread is only that tiny part of the whole image, I can imagine just how big and detailed the whole picture must be".

So, if you've not seen Gursky's actual prints yet, then please do: there is no substitute. But -having seen them - this is the only book that will come anywhere near to reminding you of that delightful experience.

***Andreas Gursky; Modern Master of Photography***
First you must understand why this book was put together. Peter Galassi, the Museum of Modern Art in New York's Chief Curator in the Department of Photography made this book as a sort of large catalog to accompany the Gursky retrospective which was in May 2001. The Gursky's photos are huge, the exhibition at MOMA was huge and the book is - well, big, but other's will more than likely agree, it could be bigger especially in context to Gursky's work. (12" x 13.5")

Inside you'll find two things Gursky's photos and Peter Galassi's essay. More than likely you'll thumb through the book ogling the photos first, only to find the treasure of Peter's research about Gursky much later. Galassi's writes with authority and intellect as he discusses the "artistic contexts and origins of the work" in detail. In the preface Galassi admits that the introduction is lengthy but is only meant to encourage further study. Indeed, you are curious, you are pulled in. Here is a sample "Andreas Gursky's best pictures of the past decade knock your socks off, and they're meant to. They're big, bold, full of color, and full of surprise. As each delivers its punch, the viewer is already wondering where it came from - and will continue to enjoy the seduction of surprise long after scrutinizing the picture in detail." Galassi continues with bringing non-photo experts up to speed on the environment of the European aesthetic over the past 150 years, with much of the focus being on the 1950'6 - 60's. Fortunately attention has been paid also the Becher's, one of Andreas Gursky's mentors from the Kunstakademie (art academy), as well as the changes that had occurred in the practice of what was being taught there. Influential artists are named and noted and neatly woven into the grand picture. There is more, but for my purposes here, the result is a writing that so thoroughly saturates the history of the artist and his medium, that it is indispensable to the book as a whole. If it were only a book of slick, meticulously composed scenes on a gargantuan scale, it would be just another coffee table book; left to collect dust in some neatly arranged corner.

The discovery of Gursky's photos is a big one. (Quick note, anyone who has ever been remotely associated with graphic design will appreciate the clean lines and layout of text and photos.) Not only is the book highly readable, it looks modern. Pages 43 -186 are entirely the color plates. They are huge. They are fascinating.

I have read a variety of descriptions of Gursky's works, many of them come from very different starting points and all come to the conclusion that he is a master artist. The photos are everything from "...modestly scaled, infallibly exposed, sharply focused images..." and "focus on the recent phase of capitalism, reified leisure, consumerist fantasies and global transformation of production." His works are "complex and labor intensive process", "Olympian" in their "detached observation of setting and stilled activity," and " overwhelmingly dense image(s) rendered with astonishing visual clarity." My point being, that you cannot escape something mesmerizing, which is the view on the world only Gursky can offer. He shoots everything from alpine landscapes to stock exchange rooms, sunsets and shoe racks, rock concerts to factories, all with the same omniscient eye. The result is astonishing; it is a sucker punch. Urbanscapes, which encompass both, views of the micro and the macro, and often render a feeling of disbelief.

There is something in these photos for EVERYONE. Literally in the sense that Gursky has traveled the world to capture these scenes. Figuratively because there is something here that everyone can relate to. Above and beyond shopping for candy, watching a sunset, standing on the mezzanine of a hotel balcony, this work conjures big questions about: commerce, ultra-consumerism, mass development and cultural homogenization, the feeling of being alone in a crowd, great energy spent on insignificant things and more. The conclusions are here for you to discover.

In summary, the book is wonderful. It is eye candy and it is brain candy. In no way is the book a substitute for seeing the artwork, but if you have to take "the next best thing" surely this book is it. I highly recommend this book for students who are actively pursuing a degree or career in photography, for art historians, teachers of art or photography, and anyone interested in social - political - environmental - or spiritual commentary by a modern artist.

REQUIRED READING FOR PARENTS AND KIDS!
There are numerous books on parenting out there, but this one provides insight into the mind of a child/teenager through the writing of Journey who is a teenager herself. After reading her half of the book, I finally understand the way kids see the world, which will ultimately help me reach my kids in a way they can relate to. I finally have some techniques that work. The other half of the book, written by the parent, gave me great insight and compassion into creating more harmony in my family. This book certainly will help "bridge the gap." A must read for parents AND kids!

I wish my parents had this book when I was a teen...
There's two sides to ever story...Mother/daughter writing team, Andrea Frank and 16 yr. old Journey Henkart each tell theirs about a full range of modern teen/parent issues. But more significantly they offer a fresh structure and format by which teens and parents can openly and safely communicate difficult issues and express complex feelings. They offer insight into negotiating fair terms and bounderies about dating, grades, and domestic responsibilities and in the process show how to develop warmer, closer bonds. A really helpful book best shared by parents and teens together.

This book can make a difference!
I am 16 years old and have a good relationship with my parents, but my mom and I decided to read this book together after seeing the authors on the Oprah Winfrey Show. We saw a chance to make our relationship even better. I only had to read half the book, as Journey wrote half for kids and her mom wrote the other half for parents. Sometimes my mom and I would read the chapters together, and we found the tools, tricks, and techniques for parents and kids really work! I think all kids deserve to have a good relationship with their parents. This book can make the differnence.

The inside track
I've read lots of 'how-to'books about advertising, but this one stands head and shoulders above the rest. It's packed with detailed information on what the job titles really mean, how to make your approach and how to find out where real openings exist. The picture it paints of the way creative people work is the most authentic I've read. This is a must for anyone wanting to get into the business and an invaluable guide for students.

Must read (but really)
Simon Anholt from Cave Anholt Jonason: I must have looked at dozens of books promising the "inside track" on working in advertising, but none of them deliver in the way this one does. Written from the perspective of the UK's leading advertising college, nobody could be better qualified than Ms Neidle to point the way to successful targeting, presentation, preparation and success in getting into the business. For the hopeful would-be agency staffer, it's as essential as a well-prepared CV and a good pair of walking shoes.

A comprehensive guide to the ad industry
An excellent guide to the industry and its various roles. Straight forward, telling it 'as it is' with great tips for getting that job. Also contains valid quotes from people 'in the business'. Wish something like this had been around 20 years ago!

Worth it solely for the Rollins story
Like all Re/Search stuff it can get a tad fawning and smug, but in this case it's deserved. The distinction between these kinds of pranks and the hand in warm water pranks is that a GOOD prank should make the person it was played on as excited as the person who played it.

What Fun!
What fun! This book is packed with great interviews with people who like to make trouble. All are amusing and all are inspiring. My personal favorites are the Henry Rollins and the Earth First! interviews. The Rollins interview makes me laugh just thinking about it, and the Earth First! interview is exciting to read. It makes me itch to go out and prank away. An excellent and informative read.

Best book EVER! Change my life for the better.
I love this book. I thought I was the only weirdo out there, but this book inspires me to be weirder. Great interviews with Dead Kennedy singer Jello Biafra, Abbie Hoffman and Henry Rollins. One of the few books I pick up weekly, even though I've read it from cover to cover many times. Still cracks me up.

Wonderful storytelling, but...........
No doubt, these finely crafted, interwoven stories will delight many readers, but.... If you're considering this collection because you loved the adventure and danger of Voyage of the Narwhal, reconsider. These stories are as quiet and subtle as Voyage is exciting.

Erudite, poetic, deeply enriching stories
SERVANTS OF THE MAP is a unique collection of short stories by the redoubtable Andrea Barrett. While most of us felt she needed the space and stretched-canvas-epic-form to weave her magic, in this collection of six shortish stories she proves she is as adept at relating her tales woven equally with Apollonian/scientific and Dionysian/sensual facets in tight, capsular fashion. She still manages to create vistas rather than views and lineages rather than one dimensional lifetimes. Now and then I find it necessary to break out of her luxuriously poetic language and take a laudatory appraisal of this women's depth of scientific information. The research for such diverse stories pays off by giving the reader the pleasure of discovery of cartography, botany, medical diseases etc in a flowing, painless entry to the richly detailed minds of her characters. This is nothing short of a wondrous book, on to be revisited often - one story at a time - like a treasured scrapbook travelogue!

Fabulous Stories
Andrea Barrett's Servants of the Map is a wonderful story collection, a collection with tremendous depth and imagination. Barrett's stories are all richly told and engrossing, each giving us their own world. What is remarkable about her stories, and what sets this collection off from most others out today is her focus on the scientific world. This focus adds an additional layer to the stories and makes them somehow richer. The stories involve a 19th century map-maker, a 21st century science professor and early 20th century tuberculosis sufferers. Barrett does not shy away from the scientific nature of her characters and their stories and because of this, these stories have additional layers of meaning. These are terrific stories. Pick them up.

Enhanced with a charming, original music CD
Superbly written by J.A. Louthain and illustrated by Andrea Eberbach, Tagger: Alone Along The Mystic River is an historical novel for young adults which is set in Connecticut in the early 1800s. Tagger is a young girl who is sold into servitude. She escapes to the Mystic River seeking to pursue an education and a new life. Tagger survives by catching and selling fish. Well researched, historically accurate, and with a strong message of independence and self-reliance, Tagger: Alone Along The Mystic River is engaging, rewarding, and highly recommended for young readers and enhanced with a charming, original music CD that comes packaged with the trade paperback book.

A Great Inspiration
What a wonderful book, and such a great inspiration for young people. Through Taggers' adventures you will learn that honesty, hard work and sharing, builds lifetime rewards and friendships. There is a big emphasis on the importance of an education. Tagger's different relationships with all of the characters in this book are heartwarming, some happy and some sad; which is all a part of growing up. The book brings Mystic River villages to life with it's colorful descriptions. I bought this book for my 8 year old niece and she just loves it. She took it to her school and her teacher is reading small parts from a couple of the chapters to the class.

Adventuresome and historical
An adventurous and compelling story for people of all ages. The historical and geographical references were educational too. I highly recommend it; I read it in 1 sitting!
