The Atlas of the Bible Lands:HIstory, Daily Life, and Tradit
Although the Horn book called the pages overcrowded, I think the book is ideal for young or reluctant readers because there are so many pictures calculated to capture student interest. Short descriptions of religions in Egypt, Rome, and Mesopotamia lend to making comparisons and gaining a quick overview of the topic. The index lists 27 pages for Egypt, but some pages only mention Egypt in passing with no information about Egypt (example: p. 20 "In the Exodus story Moses and Aaron ask the pharaoh to let his Jewish slaves go free. When he refuses, God brings ten plagues down on Egypt, including frogs, boils, hail and locusts"). Includes maps and illustrations.

The Atlas of the Medieval World in Europe (IV-XV Century)
Reminiscent of the Eyewitness Explorers Series, illustrations fill every page in this graphically beautiful series. Short descriptions give a concise eclectic overview of topics. A nice supplement to encyclopedic reference works with broader and more in depth coverage, but which may be lacking in illustrations. Ideal for young or reluctant readers because there are so many pictures calculated to capture student interest. Includes Index and maps. Series includes the following titles: Atlas of World Cultures, Atlas of the Classical world, Atlas of the Bible Lands, and Atlas of the 20th Century.

A very informative look at Beethoven and the Classical Age
"Beethoven and the Classical Age" explores the musical world of Ludwig van Beethoven. The book has lots of full-color illustrations: a two-age spread shows and explains the mechanics and design of the piano as it was constructed during Beethoven's lifetime. Each double page constitutes a chapter regarding Beethoven's life and music, great feats in the musical culture of his time, and detailed analysis of the instruments and musical theory. The top of the left page and the large central illustration refer to the principal theme (e.g., "The Ninth Symphony"). The text (in italics) narrates the life of Beethoven in chronological order. The portraits, printed reproductions of the era, and photograph complete the treatment of the discussion.

At first glance you might get the idea this is essentially a picture book, but the text would earn it five stars without the illustrations (in fact, I am not predisposed to like this style of graphic art, having grown up on Marvel Comics and owning several autographed Barry Windsor-Smith prints). My bias is that in these juvenile histories of the great composers I have been less interested in the biographical details, which are fairly standard in such books, and more in how well they give young readers an education in music appreciation. The section on "The Symphonies" not only goes into details on how Beethoven modified the orchestras that he used, but provides a concise summation of the symphonic forms he used over his career. Those two pages told me more about Beethoven's symphonies than the other juvenile biographies I have read about the composer combined.

The Barron's "Masters of Music" series is aimed at young adult readers and provides an introduction to the accomplishments of many of the world's greatest composers, as well as exploring details of the historical background and insights into how the music was composed and performed. The title is correct: young readers will learn as much about the Classical Age of music as they will about Beethoven's life and music. "Beethoven and the Classical Age" are not the first book about Beethoven that a young student is going to read, but for those who really want to understand his impact on the world of classical music, this is the book they are going to want to end up reading.

Ride with The Blue Riders into the Enchantment of Painting!
What better way to introduce children to art than through the paintings of The Blue Riders, a group of painters that included Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. The exciting story of these painters is illustrated with their bright and glorious paintings and photographs of the artists at work and play. Paintings are broken down into smaller pictures to help the reader understand recurrent themes and to pull one into the detail of each painting. Also included is an enchanting collection of hand-painted postcards from Franz Marc to Kandinsky with excerpts from his messages. Reading the text and savoring the paintings, I came away inspired and thrilled by such fun and colorful works of art. I couldn't wait to get out my paint set! I think children will feel the same.

You will not get off on this book -- you will grow with it
For most people who do BDSM or any of its components, the motivation is fun and hot sex. For Bob Flanagan it was a way to exploit the body that was betraying him through illness and make himself as much of a master of it as he could be. Six interviews are the bulk of the book -- each accompanied with pictures from his life. This is also a brief collection of his art and an interview with his partner. Three years after this book, Bob Flanagan's body would give out and he would pass into a better world where I hope that the only "pain" he feels are those that are good for him. It is a moving and distrubing account of his struggle with illness and his attempts to make the world more aware of and accepting of others like himself.

Body and Earth
Andrea Olsen's book wakes up your conscious being and brings back your connectedness to earth. It makes you grateful for gravity and the nature that surrounds you and you might begin to be in awe of yourself and others. As Bebe Miller already said, this book will be with you for a long time. Body and Earth touches all your senses with its beautiful art work and its suggested exercises are easy and joyful to complete if you wish to do so. Here are just some of the "exercises" the book suggests: Water - notice how just by sipping some nice clear water it transitions from an external to an internal state. Movement - imagine creating a short dance for every day of the week and how this might wake up your senses and might relate to your sense of space. Food - write your own story of digestion as food moves through you to nurture you. Oh, and your place. Choose a small area outside and investigate it: where is water, what insects live on it, how is life like from the perspective of an insect, what plants are on this chosen place of yours and how do they smell and even taste? The book truly invites you to investigate yourself and all that surrounds you. This book is so much fun and so enjoyable that you learn a lot along the way without even noticing. It's a great gift for anyone.

This is also a wonderful book for body workers and their students. As a Yoga teacher I have had the opportunity to work with Andrea and I know that her suggestions really work because you have a chance to experience yourself what she teaches. It brings anatomical teachings back to life. To paraphrase Andrea, this book will make you feel and as you feel you are becoming a caretaker of body, a caretaker of earth. I think we have already caused too much pain to both, so this book might encourage us to heal and act.

Body Explorer 2.0 - excellent Cross-Sectional Anatomy
For individuals who are interested in their own anatomy and for medical students the Body Explorer 2.0 is a great possibility to learn about the human anatomy. In combination with an usual atlas you have the complete impression of the 3D anatomy. You can surf through the human body by having a view at any desired slice in horizontal level. Following several structures through the slices you will study the anatomy in an excellent way and in CT pictures you will never mix up esophagus and aorta again. By showing a structure with your mouse arrow you can read the correct term. For testing your knowledge, especially when you prepare for an exam, this function is absolutely useful. The programm allows you to choose between six languages. The fun-factor is the bigger the faster your computer is, but it perfectly works on Windows 98.
