WHERE WAS THIS BOOK WHEN A MOTHER OF 3 NEEDED IT????
From a Mother of 3 daughters, I certainly would have found this book, "HAPPY THOUGHTS FOR BAD HAIR DAYS:" Encouragement for Teens, a real asset in their informative teen years. What's a Mother to do to answer some of their terrifying teen questions. Unfortunately, someone else's thought and ideas "sink in" more than a Mom's thoughts. With God on our side, all of our girls turned out AWESOME. They are all Godly Women. Their inside beauty is equal to their outside beauty. ANDREA, continue to bring God into the hearts of today's young gals through your encouragement of your books.

Andrea Stephens Does it Again!
Any woman would love the advice of a former model, and this book is full of it! Andrea Stephens has an amazing way of teaching young women how to let their individual beauty shine, and "Happy Thoughts..." is a perfect example of that talent. I would highly recommend this book for any woman who desires to learn some practical ways to let her beauty unfold from within. Andrea combines practical tips for both inner and outer beauty, so this book is sure to help anyone beat a bad hair day--and more!

Oh, to be 16 again!
This book was really awesome! It was an easy read, and even at 36 it gave me great insights! I wish there had been such good christian writers for teens when I was young. We've all had "bad hair days" (on the outside as well as inwardly), and teen girls have a very real need to know there are people who haven't forgotten what it feels like to be where they are now. Andrea sure lets us all feel like she cares about our daily struggles, and I appreciate her for that! Good job, Andrea, I'll be looking forward to your next book!

Her book is very good for children! I hope there's more on the way Mrs. Perry!

Outstanding book!
Andrea Perry is an incredibly talented and creative poet. She has tapped into the interests, concerns and humor common to all children with this book.

My son roared with laughter, begging me to re-read many of Ms. Perry's clever poems. He especially loved "Veggies Be Gone", a hilarious ode to the hatred of all things green and leafy.

Alan Snow's wonderful illustrations captivate the reader. They bring Ms. Perry's words to even more vibrant, vivid life.

I would highly recommend this book for any child, or anyone who has been a child. It delights readers of all ages.

miles of smiles
Andrea Perry certainly creates a wonderful world with words. With zany solutions to everyday problems, she brings adults and kids into a place where the answer makes us all smile.

Each time you read it, something new reveals itself. The cleverness is endless. Alan Snow acheives the same with elaborate illustrations.

My kid audience can't hear these stories enough, nor can I read them enough!

Hermy the Hermit Crab Goes Shopping

My Favorite Crab Story Ever!
I really enjoyed this book! What makes it even more special is that I got to visit with the author, Andie Weathers, at Christmas time. She graciosly spent the time discussing the whole process of writing and publishing a book. I highly recommend this picture book for any child who wants to learn about sea life and Charleston, South Carolina!...I thoroughly enjoyed it and learned a lot from it. I look forward to Andie's next book!

Hermy is a Hit!
This beautifully illustrated book is an engaging tale about a little hermit crab that travels to various real-life destinations looking for a new shell (because Hermy has outgrown his old shell). Like most children, my kids (ages 8, 6 and 4) love the beach, and they were captivated by the Hermy story and illustrations. The main character is a hermit crab, but the cast of characters includes some other ocean favorites, such as a sand dollar and a sea horse. The lighthouse and shipwreck captured my son's attention. The innovative format includes a map of Hermy's journey, and an informative "Hermy's Beachside Glossary" that answered many questions that my children had. There is also a detailed write-up of the biology of the hermit crab included at the end, which provided enrichment for my 8-year-old and me! My children are avid readers and it is often difficult to find new books that capture their attention---Hermy the Hermit Crab was a welcome, rare find. We have given this book to other kids for a birthay present, and it was a winner.

Hermy is Awesome!!
The book is well written for children of all ages. It is a wonderful lesson about the creatures of the sea. While it captures the true essence of the sea life of the South Carolina coast, it is a book that anyone across the country will enjoy and relate to.

However, it is the incredible illustrations that make the book come to life. The animated creatures appear human-like but do not lose their sea creature-like quality. The vivid colors and attention to detail will capture the attention of the reader (young or old) for hours.

The Home Organizer

The Home Organizer
My usual way of organizing is to throw everything in a file and when the file is too full, move all the papers to a basket. The basket was nearly full when I was given the Home Notebook as a gift. What a perfect way to organize: mortgage & insurance info, contractors, painters and roofers, landscaping, and all the specifications of my 1870's house and it's renovation. Everything I need is now easy to find and all in one place!

Easy Tracker
"The Home Organizer" shows that extensive research was done to facilitate home organization for the user, both for first-time owners, as well as for the experienced. There is great attention to detail about basic house information, special features, appliances, measurements, etc, which we tend to ignore, or forget, until we need it. This is very helpful, especially when we are overwhelmed by a newly purchased home, or when remodeling an old one. Ms. Schmertz makes it easy for us. She acts as an experienced "Giminny Cricket," our organized conscience that will guide you in the process of coping and maintaining our home in good order. I also found the "storage pockets" very practical for keeping related information and decorating tips. Suffice to say that I have given several copies of "The Home Organizer" to family and friends, and I use mine on a regular basis.

Organized, at last!
Finally! When the air conditioner breaks down and I can't remember what company the service contract is with, when I can't remember the name or phone number of the plumber I liked, or when I can't remember the formula for the shade of paint I used in the bedroom, Home Organizer comes to the rescue! Colorful, thorough, and even with pockets to store wallpaper samples or computer disks, this is the best gift ever for a new -- or not so new but stressed out homeowner! Real estate agents take note: give these to your clients at closing time and prepare to be showered with gratitude and repeat business!

Excelente!
For those of us interested in the practrical side of astrology this book is a must! It is a how-to guide you to dealing smartly with people...that is why the title is so appropiate!

Functional Resource
This book has been a wonderful state-of-the-art resource book for primary public-school education classrooms.
I am a teacher in California. My class assignment this year is a kindergarten/1st grade combination classroom. I started the year out as a 1st/2nd grade combination classroom but the enrollment changed at our school site that after the first two weeks the students were reshuffled around and I was given a mostly new set of students and had to make a room change.
Now I needed all new materials and resources for the grade changes. Our school was given a very large grant and we as teachers were being observed by consulting firms to see if they approved of our teaching methods. Every so many months they come around to make several observations of us in our classrooms. They check to see if we are following their recommendations and if our classrooms are "child-centered classrooms". Most of the teachers are on edge at this school and are exhausted working many long hours and at their own monetary expense to make things happen at this school.
This book offered me a wonderful resource for solving many of the concerns I had at this school for resolving a number of these difficulties. In it, are many ideas for getting your struggling students to come up to and approach grade level standards. The students are able to do activities that enable them to become excited able learners.

This is it!!
I am a kindergarten teacher who has agonized over the years at how to incorporate writing into my classroom. I've recently gone back to school to get my Masters in Language and Literacy to become a better teacher. My thesis is going to be on interactive writing. I have found this to be the BEST resource for explaining to me how and why and when to "share the pen" with my students. I can't praise this book highly enough. The pictures and lessons and rationale that have gone into this book are just what I've been searching for...The authors make so much sense...the literacy connection between reading and writing is based on research. Take a look at this book. I promise you, it'll change your outlook on how reading and writing can and should go together.

The Missing Link
I am a first year teacher and I have finally incorporated interactive writing into my daily curriculum. It was not easy at first, but I have arrived at a successful and exciting place with this teaching method in my classroom. I think I could have reached this level of success back in September if I had Andrea McCarrier's book then. It is truly the missing link to a successful literacy centered classroom. This book has supplied me with enough specific ideas to initiate interactive writing on the first days of school next year. Letter ID and sight word development will be more effective and mastered more quickly by using interactive writing with my students. The beauty of interactive writing is it can be integrated with many other subjects: science, social studies, health, technology, etc. Only after a week of hard-core interactive writing, two of my students have emerged from confusion and are have begun to build sentences with spaces, punctuation and sensical inventive spelling. Many in the class have advanced with their writing, and this has also advanced their reading! This book has helped me come up with ideas, realistic goals, step-by-step procedures, and final product bulletin boards and books for their classroom. The book is full of photographs showing the beginning of the task, the task in process, and the final result. This is the new "bible" in my classroom, and I cannot recommend it enough for kindergarten and first grade teachers, both new and veteran. Now, if I could just find a book with this quality of information and step-by-step ideas that would focus on independent literacy centers to allow me to teach small group guided reading without an interruption, I would be able to teach the world to read! Come on Pinnell! Come on Fountas! Come on McCarrier! You write it or recommend it, I'll buy it!

A book that has become my companion
Andreas Moritz touched a goldmine with this book. This is just what I have been looking for as a seeker for more meaning in life. I derive so much from the book, particularly from the Twelve Gateways to Heaven on Earth in the last Chapter. It has truly woken me up after a long sleep of not knowing who I was and where I was going. Thank God for this great book, a most helpful companion for many difficult situations in my life. Highly recommended!

If veryone Read this Book the World would be a Better Place
Each and every page of this book is filled with numerous practical insights and gems of wisdom that are otherwise hard to come by. A remarkable piece of work that deserves recognition. The book is simply written but has an astonishing depth to it that is hard to describe. I would love to get to know this author because he seems to know what people like you and me need to get on with our lives in a much more gracious and fortunate way. If you ever get to read this review, Andreas, thank you for sharing your wisdom with us.

A message that needs to be heard
Every word of this book has been meaningful and enriching to my life, right from the moment of turning the first few pages. Only now do I realize how much of life was passing me by without any value for myself, my happyness, and even my sense of sanity. The book's intention to wake us up from the more or less meaningless existences some of us live certainly has helped me find by inner base. It gave me a new direction in life where everything makes sense, even the so-called negative stuff in life. This has given me so much inner peace that I can honestly claim to be without stress. At last, I am able to live my life exactly the way I want to without feeling guilty. Andreas's work is truly priceless for I don't know how else I could have become a new person with a new potential, in a new world that I now cherish and love I love. This is not just a book you read, it is profound awakening process that you go through. The best book I have come across so far.

Jenny Lives With Eric and Martin

An excellent way to introduce children Gay relationships
I live in the heart of the gay community in Brighton, and although I am not gay myself, I interact with the community on a regular basis. I found this wonderful book in a thrift shop, as I wanted my 6-year-old nephew to understand that the world is made up many different people but I didn't want to confuse him too much. This book is great and its fun to read as well. It tells the story of a little girl called Jenny and her two fathers. They live in Denmark, have regular contact with Jenny's mother who helps Jenny and her father Martin prepare a surprise birthday party for Eric. The story follows Jenny's life with her two fathers, and how various family disputes are sorted out such as Jenny not wanting to go to the launderette and a quarrel between her two fathers. It also gently points out that not all people are accepted in society but does it in such a way that children will not be upset. The book is filled with lovely black and white photos, and nice sized print that makes it easy for children to read or for an adult to read to younger children. It is a great book and it is a shame it is out of print. Well worth getting as it stands on its own as nice children's book that is both enjoyable and fun.

Why is this book out of print?
I have to say that I'm disappointed that this book is out of print. It was my favorite book when I was younger. Being a little girl with two gay dads myself, I really related to Jenny, who had blonde hair just like I did. Since there weren't any other books back then with families that looked like mine, I dragged this one practically everywhere I went. My copy is very old and tattered. I wish this book were available today, especially considering how few books there are that portray gay and lesbian families positively.

Children's Book Explores Two Dad Families and Homophobia
JENNY LIVES WITH ERIC AND MARTIN by Bosche, was one of the first children's picture books to be published which included gay characters. It is the story of a weekend spent by Jenny, her father and her father's partner, Eric. On Friday Jenny and her dad throw a surprise birthday party for Eric. They invite Jenny's mum, who often comes over to visit her and her two fathers. On Saturday morning Jenny looks through a book and has breakfast in bed with her fathers and then they go out into the garden. On Sunday they all clean the house and do the laundry. While both men are pulling Jenny back home in a cart, they run into a woman who wishes that gays would "...stay at home so the rest of us don't have to see you. Ugh!" Jenny is bothered and confused by the woman's comments. Eric explains that being gay is when two men love and live with each other. He goes on to explain the woman's behavior by saying that when people don't understand something or are told it is wrong, they get scared and angry. Using chalk to illustrate, he tells Jenny a story about a woman who disapproves of homosexual love until it is explained to her by her husband, who once loved another man. As Jenny is getting ready for bed she asks if her fathers can have babies. Eric explains that only men and women can have babies. The portrayal of Jenny's family will be familiar to children who live in a gay-headed household. Jenny's mother seems to have a role in the family that is unlike any of the other books which deal with this subject. There is a relationship between Jenny and her mother and between the mother and Eric and Martin. "Living nearby is Jenny's mum, Karen. She often comes to visit them." The original relationship between Martin and Karen is not made clear in the text. The black and white photos illustrate how the two men care for Jenny, each other, and their home in a variety of circumstances. The events that occur in the story (for example, holding the birthday party, doing the laundry, cleaning the house together, solving conflicts between parents) are familiar to all children and their families. Jenny's father's attempt to explain homophobia to her was simple, to the point, and successful. There are several issues about this book which must be addressed. One issue which can provoke powerful, almost visceral reactions from many adults is the photo of Jenny in bed with her two fathers, one of whom, though under blanket or pillow, appears to be in the nude. JENNY LIVES WITH ERIC AND MARTIN was authored in Sweden, translated in England and distributed in this country by Alyson Press. The difference in cultural practices and values may attribute to the seeming nonchalance in displaying such a photo in a children's book. The inclusion of this scene may make some adults uncomfortable, or for those individuals in families or cultures which are more open about their bodies, this book may be a nice addition to other story books about families. This frequently intense reaction is unfortunate because the book itself is one of the best in terms of the naturalness of being gay, being a parent and being a child who has gay parents. The books long length and detailed text make it more appropriate for children ages six and older.

Khul-Khaal: Five Egyptian Women Tell Their Stories
Published in Hardcover by Syracuse University Press (1982)
Authors: Nayra Atiya and Andrea Rugh
Amazon base price: $29.95
Average review score:

Fascinating
This book presents the life stories of five working class women from Egypt in the 1970s. Atiya has masterfully written the tales in the voices of the women who told them to her. The stories contain fascinating ethnographic information about living conditions and customs of the region and the time. Together, they give a picture of women's issues in Egypt, especially regarding family bonds and power, women's work, establishment of gender roles, marriage, and female circumcision.

A Rare Find
My primary interest was "Ancient Egypt" when I first arrived in Egypt, but I quickly became fascinated by the contemporary culture as well. I searched for books that would illuminate what I was seeing around me, in vain. I was especially interested in the plight of women in Egypt, and there didn't seem to be much writing on the subject. Luckily I came across this gem of a book which turned out to be exactly what I was looking for. The stories of 5 Egyptian women are lucidly told by this remarkable Egyptian author. This book gives a glimpse into a world one must usually be born into in order to understand. Thank you Ms. Atiya!

A very moving read
Khuul-Khal is an excellent insight into the life of Egyptian women. The way the author has kept the women's own style of telling their stories, made me feel as if they were talking to me directly. I felt deeply touched by some of the stories. Khuul-Khal is a very moving book and I can't recommend it enough to anybody who wants to learn more about Egyptians and their customs.

I found this book while pregnant with my first child and never regretted purchasing it. When I was due a second time, one of my first reactions was to buy Kiddie Chronicles. Baby number three is due early next year and I already have a third book. I HIGHLY recommend it!

Kiddy Chronicles My Bery First Biography
This in no ordinary baby book. It's colorful and has great clip art. I've never seen such a wonderful baby book. It has a spot for everything. You'll love it.

An inspiratonal method of chronicling my child's development
Kiddy chronicles is a 10! It is the only book of its kind which enables you to document your child's precious milestones in a practical, logical and fun fashion! The graphics are adorable and it is the kind of book your child will love to look at when he/she is older. Since the documentation is so easy and convenient, I find I am excited to enter each milestone as it occurs. And my son will be so appreciative that I took the time to do so (which takes no time at all)! What a fabulous concept and a keepsake to be cherished for a lifetime! Kudos to this author for publishing such an inspirational method of chronicling a child's development! Signed, Betty.
