Guiding Two Passions For Taste
A real Immer fan, here Andrea is over the top with what many of us really need, how to match great food with great wine. Immer is well trained and experienced with both, and here she combines her normal passion for her subject matter along with clarity and creativity.

This work encourages one to experiment with important contrasts, looking for earthiness vs. spiciness, and the acidity and richness of wine with the food.

This she accomplishes with great text along with Tasting Charts featuring "Matching Food ... with Wine Styles to Try." There one will find unusual combos which we would not normally even attempt, but here are great recommendations to venture out into the world of wine and find new combos.

Even the tougher combos, e.g. Sweet and sour are covered, as she provides a great chart on this mathcing, getting one such as myself to try stuff like Dry Muscat and Viognier which I never would have attempted on my own.

This book is like "Wine Water Wings" which allows one to venture out into deeper wine water to find that ultimate taste explosion with excellent food.

Will become a great companion!

Critical Thinking Beyond The Beverage
With this book Immer provides still more useful information for people interested in making wine part of the dinner table. Quite an accomplishment, considering her "Great Wines Made Simple" was for me the most useful wine volume ever encountered. Here, Immer moves beyond the beverage and provides the reader with her accessible theories about how food flavors connect to wine flavors. For someone like me, someone interested in home entertaining and striving to give a guest a memorable dining experience, this book moves past anything else I've read concerning the wine arena.

Unlike other authors who provide esoteric descriptions of wines-- descriptions they don't seem to realize may vary according to the individual inclinations of the taster-- Immer acknowledges the variety of preferences amongst diners. She does not come from an attitude of "informing" readers of her Vast Knowledge; rather she lends teaching tools that enable readers to form their own intelligent opinions of what works and does not work for their particular tastes. A natural educator, she alternates between easily-digested theories, theories often summarized in simple chart form, and hands-on, effective experiments. Her experiments are the most pragmatic kind: tastings. In this way, she promotes an understanding of flavor combinations in a way that is most visceral-- through the mouth.

Her theories make sense, and they work-- I know because I've tried them! Her reading inspired me to spend way too much on sample wines and test them with various foods. Because she is not merely presenting a list of try-this-wine-with-that-cheese, pair-Wine-A-with-Recipe-X, but rather because she is giving us readers categorical theories about why some wine styles connect to certain types of foods, we can develop our own menus based on what foods we are interested in and what wines please our palates. In this way, her book can sit on the shelf beside such theory-driven volumes as "Culinary Artistry," Peterson's "Sauces," Gold's cookbooks, and Schneider's "A New Way To Cook." Immer puts the reader in the creative position rather than calling for imitation with an encyclopedia of recipes.

What is still more appealing about her approach is that she is dedicated to making wine a part of everyday dining. She acknowledges good flavor combinations at every level of cost, time, and creativity. Her enthusiasm for her subject is contagious. It might tempt a reader to obtain her third book, the "Wine Buying Guide." But while Immer's "Wine Buying" guide is fine, it is an example of the "old guard" of wine information: a guide that lets the reader get lost in the forest for all the trees. For me, "Great Tastes" provides a far superior way of thinking, because it empowers me to make choices based on the information on the wine label rather than in a wine guide.

Time for a Book Rebirth
This book was written in 1999, during the go-go years of the late 1990s when people were jumping from job to job like there was no tomorrow. There were plenty of employment opportunities-locally and across the country and the world. With such abundance, a lot of people were just jumping without investing sufficient time and thought into the decisions they were making.

Then the economy tanked, taking a lot of hopeful careers down with it. Hark! The economy is coming back! Things are picking up again and workers will have an increasing number of job options open to them. As we shift back toward a sellers' market, workers in all fields will again have decisions to make. The search for new opportunities is kicking into gear and thousands of people will be looking for exciting jobs...which may not be right around the corner.

This book will take you step-by-step through a process that has baffled many job-seekers over the years. Nope, it's not one of those academic treatises full of theoretical stuff. You'll have a workbook in your hands-one that will put ideas in your head, questions in front of your face, and pages to write things down. "Greener Pastures" is very specifically for people who are looking for a job in another location; they want to move to another city, another state, for whatever reason(s).

In the initial chapter, Andrea Kay, a specialist in job seeking, will challenge why you want to consider a move in the first place. Be ready to be forced into some research-internal and external. Then, in the subsequent chapters, you'll find questions, information, suggestions, and techniques to streamline your process. Your mind will be opened by this book, which will also help you fill it back up again with the information you need to find that distant job the right way. Result: you'll go after your next position with a significantly higher level of confidence which will support greater achievement.

Bonus: You'll find some good resources in the back of the book, right before the comprehensive index. "Greener Pastures" is a usable tool.

Note: While this book is based on an out-of-town focus, there is plenty of value for the job-seeker who does not necessarily want to move to another city. The process may reaffirm your desire to grow where you are planted. "Greener Pastures" is a book whose time has come...again.

I found the job of my dreams because of this book.
I've always wanted to leave home in the midwest and move to the east coast but was afraid to just pack-up and take-off. This book gave me the attitude, confidence, tools and knowledge to explore my dream without leaving home. I was shocked to discover I could not only find a job on the east coast - I found my dream job and will be working 2 blocks away from the beach doing something I've always wanted to do and making a lot more money than I thought I could make. Thank you Andrea Kay! This book is insightful, well-written and took me step-by-step through the process. It's the best 12 bucks I've ever spent in my life. I'm going to eat lobster once a week!

A well-rounded book that is a pleasure to read.
What makes this gardening book stand out is the author's writing style that reads as if she is in the room talking to you.

Although I have dozens of gardening books, "Growing Great Vegetable in the Heartland" would rate in my Top Three. Not only for the content of topics, but also her easy to read delivery, the many additional hint's, ideas and beautiful pictures.

Well worth the cover price, my gardening friends will be getting this from me for Christmas!

A "must read" if you garden in the heartland
If you garden in the heartland, this book should be your gardening bible. Ms. Chandler provides tons of information dealing with growing conditions specific to this area, that you won't find in most books. Trust me, this type of knowledge is something that is only gained by years of experience. If you want to save yourself from all the trouble of gardening by trial and error, this book is the answer to your prayers. One of the most comprehensive guides you'll ever find. Enjoy!

Healing Lessons

Highly valuable & poignant
This book was by far one of the most poignant I have read in some time. I could not put it down and very often the tears will flow...be forewarned, but it is worth every word. The book makes you feel--an important and very often critical contribution a writer can make. Winawer learns about the doctor patient relationship, but concurrently learns how important it is to put aside your own ego for the benefit of those dear to you--patient or spouse. His greatest lesson was the one his wife taught him -the ability to humble oneself. I highly recommend this book and suggest reading it more than once-it has many valuable lessons about life and is a must for all people, not only those who have had personal experiences with cancer. It has many contributions.

I couldn't put it down...
I recommend this book to those living with cancer and those who love them. This book reveals that those of us who care about someone with cancer, even a world-reknowned physician at Memorial Sloan-Kettering, are feeling many of the same emotions and drains. Sloan-Kettering is a wonderful hospital and Sid Winawer is amongst its many, many stars.

Great For Beginners and experienced herbalist
When I came across this book (...), I had to buy it. Now It is my favorite among the dozen herbal reference books on my shelf. In fact, currently it is lent out to a friend who is wanting to learn about herbs for treating common illness. This book is the well rounded and written by two ND's (Naturopathic Doctors)

Stimulating...Vital....Erudite
Drs. Hershoff and Rotelli's Herbal Remedies text is a fascinating journey to the multidimensional world of plants and how they may be used medicinally. The delivery of fascinating information presented in this 300-some odd page book is liken to sitting spell-bound in the midst of ancient medicine men and futuristic scientists. Dr. Hershoff's background as award-winning best-loved professor shows with the user-friendly organization. I make use of this book as a quick and thorough reference and also as a compelling novel. EXCELLENT!

Bloody Sequel!
This is a sequel to Andrea D'Allasandra's "Death House" which I really enjoyed. This sequel is even better in many ways than "Death House." The Old Saunders Place, where all the murders took place before, has now been converted into a luxury apartment complex. This is where the fun begins. The terrifying, hatchet carrying Benji returns. He finds all kinds of wild and hysterical victims to kill off. My favaorite was the cookbook author, Josie. This book is very, very funny besides being very scary. There's two gay guys, an assortment of weirdoes. The wildest one of all is the mother who tortures her little boy. You'll have a ball with this one.

I am the author
I am the author, Andrea D'Allasandra, who authored "Horror House." This is a sequel to my very popular debut mystery chiller, "Death House." "Horror House" continues the saga of the horrific psycho mountain monster, Benji. This time the charnal house of the first book has been renovated into a super deluxe apartment complex in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Despite the glittering trappings, Benji finds a way to enter and begin a new reign of murder and mayhem. Many of you have also written me about my third novel, "The Master of Hell Mountain." All these stories take place against the backdrop of the magnificent, but mysterious, Blue Ridge Mountains. All three novels are based on fact. Some of you may know me better as author, 'Jason Fury,' who writes passionate, sensual gay novels and stories. Visit me at my very popular website: [website]. So long--and check the locks on your doors when you read my newest thriller.

House Without a Dreamer

Mistress of Otherness
Budy's poems take us places, within familiar surroundings, we haven't really been before, or try hard to deny acknowledging. Budy unswervingly engages all that is human and mystical in our time. She can inspire the beasts of the jungle and the chicekens themselves to dance!

You can read it again and again
This is, without a doubt, one of my favorite books of recent poetry. Among her many other talents, AHB cleverly recasts fairy tales, without falling victim to Adrienne Rich's tendency to find mythology in everything, and her poetic felicity goes far beyond ironic versions of folk wisdom. She'll teach you about pain and aging, yet her profundities don't ring pedantic. She'll humor you without sacrificing her poetic integrity. I cannot say enough in praise of her craft. Too many writers continue to pass off broken prose as poetry, yet AHB pays close attention to line and teases you with occasional amphibolic turns of phrase. Her emotional insight into relationships and her ability to render those relationships with candor makes her poetry familiar, yet she achieves this without sacrificing the strength of her subversive moments. This book is a joy to read again and again.

Il cane di terracotta
Published in Unknown Binding by Sellerio ()
Author: Andrea Camilleri

Wonderful Crime Book
I had not read a book in Italian for ages, and I found Camilleri's books about Montalbano just great. Now I am trying the other books from the same author. I agree with Vince in stating that everyone should read these books. However, even if I found them hard at first, due to the dialect the author uses, I strongly recommend the original version. If you are able ti find a translated copy don't buy it. The Siculo language is part of the book. And I can't figure Salvo Montalbano speaking English or any other language than Italo-siculo.

Unforgettable
This would have to be one of Camilleri's best efforts.

A mafia "supergrass" is ambushed before he can testify. As he lies dying in a Palermo hospital, he has his revenge by telling Salvatore Montalbano, the police chief of Vigàta about a mafia arms cache that has been hidden in a cave.

But behind the cache, there is a second room with the naked corpses of two young lovers. A huge clay dog looks over the corpses and there is a bowl of old coins and a pitcher of water nearby. The bodies are very old, dating back to the American WWII landing in Sicily and Montalbano is sidetracked into a private investigation into events that happened over half a century ago.

This book is really, really terrific. Camilleri has a degree of love and compassion for his characters sadly lacking in most modern crime writers. I personally lost all interest in James Elroy after coming across Camilleri's books. The insights one gains into small town Sicilian police and their "cohabitation" with the local mafia are quite interesting as well.

There is a small(?) problem with this book, however.

The first is that you will need to either be a very fluent Italian speaker or better still, be familiar with the Sicilian dialect.

Camilleri sets his books in a fictional town called Vigàta, and writes (even the narrative) in a sort of generic, modern day Sicilian of his own invention, the dialect of Vigàta. The language flows in a wonderful way, with a soft-spoken musicality which is not possible in other languages and helps to set the tone and the atmosphere of the story.

Camilleri is not TERRIBLY difficult to understand, no worse than "A Clockwork Orange", and you can probably work out a lot of the words from context alone, but it is certainly a daunting task if you're not a fluent Italian speaker.

If you CAN read Italian, do yourself a favour and try to find a copy of this book. It's certainly worth the effort.

The Illustrations from the Works of Andreas Vesalius of Brussels; With Annotations and Translations, a Discussion of the Plates and Their Background,

Absolutely Incredible!
I first heard about Andreas Vesalius when I read about his work in BODY OF KNOWLEDGE. His drawings have been the basis for THE ATLAS OF HUMAN ANATOMY and GRANT'S DISSECTOR and other reference books used in Anatomy classes at medical schools throughout the country.

What makes his work incredible is to think the fascinating illustrations of the human anatomy were researched and drawn by Vesalius in 1543. His book has been called "one of the most noble and magnificent volumes in the history of printing" and "one of the greatest treasures of Western Civilization". More incredible is the manner in which he performed the dissections and the relative accuracy of the drawings which have survived to this day.

The introduction gives an absorbing and enlightening account of Vesalius' life in the first half of the 16th century. The book is for the curious and those interested in anatomy, art, graphic arts and printing. You will read and look in awe and wonder about the history and progress of medicine and science.

Medical Materworks
Andreus Vesalius, whom I speculate was a student of Da Vinci, shows the body in all sorts of poses, while in each page you see the body "drips" off its skin and muscles all the way down to the bones. Some masterful work and imagination employed here! Just marvelous! Taken from his monumental work De Humani Corporis Fabrica, which is still used today in the medical fields. Also included are plates from his Epitome of the De Humani Corporis Fabrica and Tabulae Sex. Essentially this is only the illustrations, but it also includes a lengthy introduction as well as excerps from the original text. Highly reccomended to the art student and medical student for this indispensible reference. Also a great book just to appreciate some amazing art. Some of my favorite plates are of the nervous sytem in which it is a full body posed standing upright. I imagine how Andreas created this, and also realized how well he must have known the body's anatomy in order to attempt such a feat. Awesome!
