Excellent book
This book is fabulous. I recently travelled to NYC with my 15 month old daughter, and was looking for a book with suggestions fo fun places to take her, and also wanted to know where the "cool" clothing and toy stores were. This book was right on target-answered everything I wanted to know and more.

Finally a "Zzagat-Like" Guide for families
Finally a "Zagat-like" guide for families. Although I have lived in the New York area all my life, New York with kids is a whole different place. This book has the inside scoop on activities, restaurants, shops and a ton of things I did not know. What's more-it's easy and it's fun to read.

Truly an invaluable source for New York!
All of my friends in New York were talking about this book, so I bought one before my trip. It's great to have everything from shopping to restaurants, to what to do in one book and be able to carry it around. It really made New York with kids easy and fun!

Best Single Reference
I'm the author of several popular computer programming books that amazon sells. The problem is, I'm not really a very good writer; my background is all technical. My Copy Editor recommended this book as the single best reference -- better than the Chicago Manual of Style or others. An excellent choice!

New York Discovers Common Sense
I have a stack of grammar books at hand on my desk, from the classic Strunk & White's The Elements of Style to the witty and wise books of Patricia T. O'Conner, grammar grinch of the New York Times. None is so comprehensive and usable as the NY Public Library's guide. From welcome advice about "bias-free usage" to "the essential comma," the Library Guide gives down-to-earth and much-needed commentary about the problems writers face every day. My favorite section is Misued and Easily Confused Words, worth reading for its entertainment value alone. I've been a professional writer for over 30 years and only wish I could have had this volume with me all that time. I've tried the rest, this is the best. I just bought my son, who is working on his first book, a copy for Christmas.

Finally! News you can use!
As a professional writer and editor I have found this book to be the best resource for my everyday style and usage quandries. (And I have used several style guides.) It has been a great help in the last couple of months as I have been writing an editorial style guide for my employer. It's easy to navigate and provides information that can be understood by those of us who aren't rocket scientists. It also explains style and grammar issues and gives real-life examples.

Highly recommended!
What a clever story! Even as an adult I was able to fully enjoy this book. Illustration by Andrea Wallace was spectacular. All of the charactors she created were extremely charming and helped me enjoy the book even more. This book will make a great gift as well as a precious keep sake.

Not Another Moose is Not just any other kids book!
Although I am not a child any more, but I pretend to be some days, Not Just Another Moose has a wonderful story that can be enjoyed by young and adult readers. The illustrations, both amazing and very whimsical, bring the Moose and the perils of his prized antlers to life! A great find!

What I think about "Not Just Another Moose"
I am almost 8 and I think it was very good. It was very funny. I liked Hildy because she is a pig, and I like pigs. I liked that it was in chapters. It was nice.

The Perfect House : A Journey with Renaissance Master Andrea Palladio

Very good book. Needs more illustrations.
Excellent prose. Fantastic selection of villas. It would be helpful if subsequent editions had more illustrations. I found myself constantly flipping back to try to determine what the author was mentioning. All in all, though, a worthwhile read.

Palladio - The Shakespeare of Architecture
Witold Rybczynski does it again. This book is definately up there with Home, A Clearing in the Distance and One Good Turn. Rybczynski's travelogue style suits his subject matter perfectly, turning a potentially dry academic subject into a gripping read for anyone remotely interested in history or architecture or both. In this hard-to-put-down book Rybczynski describes the genius and creativity that was Palladio, a man who is to architecture as Shakespeare is to the English language. Rybczynski uses this one telling comparison to make a clear point that as we walk through our world of 2001, echoes of Palladio are all around us. I'd recommend new readers to Rybczynski to follow this up with Rybczynski's One Good Turn.

The Most Influential Architect
Who is the greatest architect who ever lived? It's an impossible question, of course. Perhaps one that might get closer to a real answer is, Who is the most influential architect who ever lived? Witold Rybczynski has an answer, and it is a convincing one: Palladio. In _The Perfect House: A Journey with the Renaissance Master Andrea Palladio_ (Scribner), Rybczynski looks at the villas Palladio produced around the mainland of Venice in the sixteenth century, not as historic monuments but as useful and beautifully architectured homes. He places Palladio firmly within his times, but drawing on the classical architecture of Rome and drawn on by Inigo Jones, Thomas Jefferson, and countless others. It is hard to disagree with Rybczynski's conclusion about Palladio's influence, and after this book, a reader is likely to see Palladian themes not only in grand homes, but in diminished form in modern suburban ones as well.

Palladio was merely the son of a miller or maker of millstones; the historical record is not clear. He was trained as a stonemason, and early showed enough talent that Count Giangiorgio Trissino, of an old Vicenza family, noticed his ability. This was his introduction to higher things, especially his ticket to Rome, where the ancient buildings proved a continuing inspiration for his villas. He designed about thirty of them, several of which never were started and if started were not completed; clients of architects then and now faced over-optimism and reversals of fortune. Seventeen survive, some in excellent preservation and some a bit seedy. They are Palladio's main legacy, and remain beautiful and durable; most are still lived in. Rybczynski gives a wonderful introduction to the tools at Palladio's disposal - pediments, porches, entablatures, apses, and more. These were all juggled and adjusted in each specific case. And while there is a unity to the composition of the villas, Rybczynski demonstrates that there is no such thing as a "typical" Palladian villa: "Some of his designs incorporate temple fronts, some do not; some have pedimented windows, some have plain openings; some porticoes are supported by elaborate Corinthian columns, others by unadorned piers. His fertile imagination brimmed with ideas." Architects and artists have been learning from Palladio ever since. The book has the author's line drawings of each of the buildings, and some reproductions of Palladio's sketches or plans, but they are really not sufficient to understand the massings of space Palladio so expertly managed. When I read the book, I checked up on various websites to get fuller pictures.

Rybczynski has lived for a short time in one of the villas, and his words on what make them special are worth reading, although no one will fully be able to explain it. He gives enough examples from all over the world (in America, Monticello, the White House, local courthouses and countless southern mansions are Palladian buildings) to make entirely sufficient his argument about the architect's influence. It is easy to catch Rybczynski's enthusiasm. Those who don't know Palladio will find this book, which is a capsule biography, travelogue, and architectural appreciation, a fine introduction. Those who are already Palladians will rejoice in the clear descriptions and the first hand accounts, coming from an experienced observer and an entertaining storyteller.

Wonderful Book for All Ages
I read this book on a whim and thoroughly enjoyed it. The writing is first-rate, and the story of this amazing woman is inspirational. The book does an excellent job of describing what pioneer life was like. Great book for kids, but I enjoyed it, too.

One of the best books my daughter ever read, she says.
According to my 11-year-old daughter, this is a classic case of "Don't judge a book by its cover." "I thought it would be boring, since there is only grass on the cover, but it was the best book I ever read," she said. She was fascinated by the details about the nitty-gritty of prairie life, by the size of the families and the constancy of the chores. She's looking forward to reading Warren's book, "Orphan Train Rider," and wants the author to hurry up and write more.

The story of a real pioneer girl.
This is the story of a real pioneer girl, Grace McCane. When Grace was just three years old, she moved with her parents and two sisters to Nebraska to homestead a claim on the lonely prairie. Grace grew up on the prairie, and she loved her life, although it was hard. If you liked the Little House on the Prairie Books, you will love Grace's story - the story of a girl and her family striving to make their dream come true despite innumerable hardships.

Positive Toddler Book - a must have
My son, Maxwell, loves this book. We brought it for his 1st birthday. His dad reads it to him often. It's a positive reinforcement of the uniqueness of being African American. This book does a great job at highlighting the beautiful features of African American children. Maxwell smiles and laughs when he sees his own pretty brown reflection at the end of the book.

shows father-son closeness and teaches self-confidence
A beautifully written and illustrated book for children of all races. My daughter especially enjoys looking in the mirror on the last page. Its a wonderful self exploratory book for babies.

Great Book! My grandsons (and Dad) loved it!
This bought this book for my grandsons (2 1/2 and 15 months). It quickly became one of their favorite books. They especially enjoy the mirror in the back. Thanks for such a positive and very simple book. SEG

An absolutely gorgeous book, published by Taschen and printed in Italy, my version is about 5"X 8" page size and the ISBN number is 3-8228-1356-7 (English version).

Strange Dreams: Collected Stories and Drawings

Beautifully Simple and Inspirational
Brian Andreas' work is always so amazing. His words are so simple, yet poetic, funny, and true. When I read his stories, I find myself either crying, laughing, or searching myself. I love how he can take a regular situation that many people fail to hold sacred, such as sitting with a loved one on a summer's night, and turns it into something profoundly beautiful.

Wisdom in simplicity.
The thoughts Brian Andreas captures and illustrates for us seem like they could be from anyone's life, and many struck a chord from my own. There's some sibling rivalry, parental joy towards children, the stirrings of love, the reality of the working world, and some things that defy categorization. The artwork, at first glance, looks like something a parent would stick on the fridge after pre-school, but on further viewing strikes a very grown-up sense of balance with the verses penned above, below, and around the pictures. If the prose doesn't have you laughing out loud, it might make you sigh, smile, or think back to a memory the words evoke in your own experience. Overall, this was a wonderful read I'll be recommending to friends and buying for family.

Magical!
Brian Andreas' poetry was displayed on his "story people" in a local art store; I wish I had a house big enough to cover the walls with his work. His "stories" are one or two-liners that seem pulled from a delightful dream to instantly wrap around your heart. It's not always clear if they were written with the musings of an adult or the wisdom of a child, but be careful - you may catch yourself laughing aloud with a tear in your eye.
