In Rosa's Mexico
We came across this book at the local library and loved it because it incorporated some Spanish words within the stories! My daughter looks for it everytime we go to the library! She loves it and loves to practice filling in the Spanish word when we read the story together... she is only 3 right now! I highly recommend this book for some great short stories with an introduction to bilingualism!

This book soars!
These three simple stories are beautifully written glimpses into the day to day life of a little Mexican girl named Rosa. Magical things happen in her world and the paintings that accompany the text bring that magic to life and give it texture. Oh sure, the book teaches about responsibility and sharing, the importance of helping others and telling the truth, but it doesn't preach. It is a lovely book that my 3 year old never tires of. As a bonus, there are about 20 simple spanish words to enhance the experience. A first-rate keeper and a first-rate gift!

A+++++
Do what she says and you WILL get that job. Much more than just an interviewing book. Learn how to look at yourself through the eyes of the interviewer.

Filled with common-sense invaluable advise.
This is an invaluable book for people who are just entering the workplace. However, it may be even more valuable for those who are changing careers or have been working for years and may have forgotten how to give yourself an edge without seeming to boast.

Ms. Kay has included many valuable exercises that (although time consuming) will give you a fresh approach to showing yourself in the best possible light. You will lose the interview jitters because you "know" what you want to say.

Through the exercises you will gain new knowledge of your own skills and how to present those skills in the context of the job interview, instead of just blowing your own horn.

This is a terrific book and it does work.

A Simply Terrific Read-Aloud Story
Little Simon has many talents. When asked, he can growl like a dog, stretch like a cat and jump like a horse, "It's simple," says Simon. But when he meets a wily old tiger who first, hands out the kudos to gain Simon's confidence and then tricks him into climbing onto his back, things start to look grim for our fearless hero. Will Simon be able to outsmart the tiger and save himself.....? Mary Ann Hoberman has written a delightful story that includes all the elements of a good fable, a brave hero, a dangerous animal villain and circumstances that offer a true battle of wits. Her easy to read, amusing and gentle text, with repetitious refrain, will have youngsters involved and "helping" you read in no time. Meilo So's imaginative and expressive watercolor artwork adds just the right touch and together this dynamic team have authored a picture book that's both perfect for beginning readers and a wonderful read-aloud story the whole family will enjoy.

A Simply Fun Book
Simon's adventures grow progressively more exciting and dangerous, but he eventually finds simple solutions to every problem. Children will love the refrain, "It's simple." They will also love Simon who shows wit and bravery when life gets a little scary. So's illustrations are magical but simple enough to match the tone of the story. Hoberman's text is fun to read out loud to a group. This would be a great new book for story time.

The Jews of Europe after the Black Death

western european jewish history
I enjoyed this book because my family is of eastern European Jewish stock and I never knew very much about Jewish history in western Europe. The Jews of Europe After the Black Death is a fascinating overview of six hundred years of Jewish life in England, France,Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Germany. It has a chapter on the relationship between the Catholic Church and the Jews that explains the origins of the Church's age-old position on the Jews. Another chapter talks about Jewish identity: what makes everyday Jewish life different from that of Christians. A short afterword discusses Zionism and the Holocaust. For someone interested in European history, Jewish history, of Church history, this is the one book to read.

Foa's masterpiece illuminates...
So many fine works of European history are lost to English speakers, either through poor translations or no translations at all. Not so with Anna Foa's panoramic sweep of 5+ centuries of Jewish life in Europe. A densely-packed treat for the general reader and scholar alike, with a marvelously light and fluent translation from the Italian by cultural historian Andrea Grover.

A real treasure for any history buff!

Shorter and better than Pilgrim's Progress
I enjoyed this book by the Father of Modern Education more than Pilgrim's Progress. I easily identified the many twists and turns that people make before they find spiritual insight. A must read.

Thought-provoking book.
Why should you read a book written in 1623? Because, this book is special. Comenius wrote with an uncanny ability to see life as it really is. In an allagorical genre (as Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress), it is fast moving, interesting and thought-provoking. The author will grab you and bring you along with him as he searches the world for true wisdom and true happiness. This book is simply unforgetable. On par, but of different genre, with Augustine's Confessions.

Journal of an Itinerant Artist
These essays flow rhythmically one into the other; they move softly, yet each human contact takes the reader to its poignant crescendo. They are works of a man who embodies the characteristic that unites all religions: compassion, understanding and humanity.

A Splendid Collection of Literary Essays
JOURNAL OF AN ITINERANT ARTIST, Drew Bacigalupa's 1977 essays that first appeared in a local Sunday newspaper, are just as fresh in 2000 as when they were written a quarter century ago. That's the way with good literature.

Bacigalupa's vision of the arts and humanities and how they affect our thoughts and our lives stimulates the reader to new heights of understanding the people around us. He touches our lives by sharing a compelling sense of family.

The title, incorporating the word "itinerant," may be misleading. A Jack Kerouac road trip with drugs, this is not. Home-based in Santa Fe, Bacigalupa draws from his travels and brings a global relevance to the diverse culture of the American Southwest.

A Spiritual Experience
I am just reading the German original of this book. I am deeply touched by it because the sincerity of the author shines through every word. M.Hofmann has been in diplomatic service for decades and served as German Ambassador to Morocco and Algeria.
First of all I find his writing style delightful. Secondly he proves that "even" the way of a Muslim can be a spiritual enlightening path. Okay, sometimes he lifts the index finger like when he writes against alcohol, but in the end he is right. I found some very important hints in this book for my own spiritual path, but I guess this book found me in the right moment - it called me out of the bookshelf of our local book store. If you would like to learn about the Islam, read this book!

Understand Muslims better
Because the book is about the exepriance of a German Muslim, it gives the reader an idea about the Islamic World and how they think. Because the writer is a German he is more likely to be able to explain the Islamic traditions that might seem strange to non-muslims or be interprited negatively. I like the book because it helped me understand how Muslims- who are not Arab -think and express themselves. Hofmann wrote other interesting books. One of his best books I think is The journals of a Muslim German. This book reviels how he was presented to Islam and the difference Islam brought to his life.

A wonderful tribute to a great American poet
"Jump Back, Honey: The Poems of Paul Laurence Dunbar" combines several poems from this beloved African-American poet with illustrations from several different artists: Ashley Bryan, Faith Ringgold, and more. Dunbar (1872-1906) was an expert at writing poems in both a formal "literary" English and in a style that evoked African-American vernacular speech (this second type of poem was known as a "dialect" poem). This book includes excellent examples of both modes. A sample from a "dialect" poem: "Fiddlin' man jes' stop his fiddlin', / Lay his fiddle on de she'f."

I liked how several different visual artists contributed to this book; this gives the book a nice sense of variety. My favorite illustrations include Jerry Pinkney's pictures, which are vibrant with color and energy, and Carole Byard's delicate picture that accompanies "The Sparrow."

These are poems about nature, African-American culture, and the joys of love and family life. This book is an excellent choice for a multicultural children's book collection.

Jump back, honey
A versatile group of illustrators add flair to Paul Laurence Dunbar's poetry. Faith Ringgold's portrait of Frederick Douglass gives additional power to "Douglass". Jerry Pinkney's illustrations capture the playfulness and sass of "A Negro Love Song"; and "The Colored Band". Both Carole Byard's and Jan Spivey Gilchrist's illustrations add contemporary color and meaning to this anthology. The notes list brief biographical information on Dunbar and some background data on the title of this book. Some facts about the illustrators are also included in this collection of poems. This book can be used for school and church performances and plays.

A big, fat, lovely book

This is absolutely the finest version of the Kama Sutra available. With 224 pages and a huge page size--14-1/2" by 10-1/2", over an inch thick, printed on high quality glossy paper, and absolutely full of full color photos of erotic Indian art, including statuary and several twice-size foldouts, it would be a bargain at twice the offered price here on Amazon.

For years the Kama Sutra has been the object of admiration because of its explicit sexual content, as well as its Tantric religious application for those interested in the practices of Eastern religions. Of course many in the West have sought it out as a source of ancient pornography, but the artwork represented in this book is not as anatomically correct as that which can be found in Playboy or Hustler, and therefore is less useful for voyeuristic titillation. However, for the student of Eastern religions, especially the Tantric tradition, it will be found to be unsurpassed.

The Hindi text, both in their calligraphy and the alphabet, and fully translated into English, is beautifully done. The absolutely gorgeous large sized full-color reproductions of ancient Indian art is exquisite.

Highly recommended!

amazing! ... exotic and erotic......just beautiful!
An unbeleiveably full, large format book with the most wonderful and colorful images of erotic Indian art imaginable. This book should really be selling for $... upwards for the quality and quantity of fantastic photos and images alone. A top-quality, heavy art book, indeed.
Fold-out pages also provide large scale formats and it seems no expense was spared to create the high quality images that abound in this awe-inspiring collection of wonderful erotic masterpieces. Truly the most captivating book I now proudly own.

As a traveler and lover of all things "India", I have been waiting for a book like this for a long time to give as a gift to my husband. This is the real heart of the matter...no need to actually read the Kama Sutra when what you really want is all right here. Even without the erotic theme, this book presents some of the most wonderful art of India I have ever seen in one breathtaking book. This book is an absolute "must" for any follower of Indian art, or just anyone who appreciates the delicious and delicate sex-play and sensualities of Indian art and history. Very inspiring :), very beautiful, exotic, erotic and just plain fabulous! What more could you want? I am thrilled with this purchase..... on all levels! A+++++

CLIMATE IS COLD BUT COOKING IS HOT!
Temperatures may plummet but the cooking is hot and delicious in this intriguing cookbook, a companion to Viestad's upcoming PBS series. He's young, adventurous, and has an appealing approach to food.

In his own words "Kitchen Of Light" "is a book that features food and recipes from Scandinavia, the northernmost part of Europe. Our culinary traditions are all about proximity to nature - an important part of our lives."

Those words take luscious life as we find Viestad on a beach in a mobile kitchen presiding over cod carpaccio, baked halibut, and arctic cloudberry cream. Honey coated leg of lamb with winter vegetables is served in an ancient Viking city, and the dauntless young chef even takes to the water on a fisherman's boat to prepare cod roe and cod with truffles.

Good food brings the holidays to mind and we find a fitting yuletide celebration with Christmas pork rib and rice pudding.

There is more, much, more, and all of it mouth watering. Where else will you find the best cheeseburger in the world made of grouse, venison, pork and fois gras topped with Norwegian cheese?

- Gail Cooke
