In Blue Mounains by Thomas Lockre
A beautifully illustrated and narrated work for both children and adults. It captures a wonderful aspect of the Catskill mountains in the Hudson Valley of New York. My mother is a member of the 3500 Club, a club with hikes the 35 peaks over 3500 feet in the Catskills. She is eager to take her first grandchild,my daughter, along. This book is a wonderful way for them to begin sharing the wilderness together. Thomas Locker has painted places that you can acutually visit. A map is included in the book so you can adventure to all of the picturesque spots he writes about so dearly. A great gift for anyone who loves the outdoors. It makes it especially meaningful if the giver and the givee can share the adventure together.

A MUST for any parent with a "learning disabled" child.
Mr. Armstrong helped us find our child's learning style and our 12 year blossomed from an insecure, discouraged and failing student to a confident, enthusiastic young person who now finds joy in learning. This book shows that any child CAN learn, and shows the reader how to make it happen.

This book was mysterious and easy to get lost in.
I loved this book mostly because it was about a subject I find especially interesting. I have a tendency to read fantasy novels, which is why I was drawn to this book. The format is unsusal, consisting of 2 diaries, 1 set of letters, 1 narrative, and 1 college application form. The stories were all connected, usually in a subtle way, like a name would appear in one story and then in the next. Within each story, hints would be dropped about the outcome, but the ending would still be a complete surprise (don't cheat and look ahead!). It made me want to keep reading, which I did (I read it almost all in one sitting). I reccomend this book to everyone that loves the supernatural, and even if you don't, this book just might get you hooked.......

The Italian American Family Album
This book, although written for older children, is a good read for adults as well. It shows the story of Italian immigration starting in Italy, which few accounts do. The pictures from Italy give the reader a setting to contrast with American cities and towns of the times. The interviews with the immigrants give a flavor of the struggles they went through and clarify their reasons for leaving their homes and families. The sections on Italian American ommunities and their traditions and contributions are a source of pride for all Italian Americans. A highly recommended book for those wishing to understand the immigrant experience.

My second grade son's favorite book
I highly recommend this book for parents who think their kids are ready to try reading on their own. My son rates this book above the Magic Tree House series and surprisingly above the Pokemon books by Tracey West. I wish they would get on the ball and put out more Wishbone The Early Years books.

An All Time Favorite
This is my 2 year old's favorite book. He takes it in the car, to grandma's, to bed, etc. The story is simple but entertaining for toddlers and preschoolers. James the Engine gets into trouble with some naughty freight cars and it's Thomas to the rescue! A classic board book.

magical for dino-loving stamp collectors
This book is about dinosaur-commemorative stamps, the art behind the stamps and the dinosaurs that inspired the art. Many children (and their parents) are discovering stamps in the mid-to-late elementary years, and the beautiful dinosaur stamp releases of the past few years are a great way to lead from a small child's fascination with dinosaurs to begin a lifetime hobby. I purchased the featured page "The World of Dinosaurs" as a stocking stuffer for my child when it came out a couple of years ago, and we were delighted to match it up with the book. The book itself was a discovery of a stamp-loving friend. As a person who does not buy books that will only be read once, I recommend it as both a gift and a worthy addition to the home library.

James the Really Useful Red Engine
James, who crashed in the last story of Thomas the tank engine, settles down and becomes a very useful engine. He has 4 stories all to his self, James and the Top-hat, James and the Bootlace, Troublesome trucks and James and the Express. In the first story, he and Edward double head a passenger train in which James gets too excited for his own good at the big station and ruins Sir Topham Hatt's Top Hat. Then, he takes some coaches out after being given into trouble by Sir Topham Hatt, who threatens to take away his red coat and have him painted blue. He bangs the coaches so badly that he causes a leak in the pipe which is repaired by, of all things, a passenger's bootlace. He is sent to the shed in disgrace and left there to think about what he's done. But one day, Sir Topham Hatt comes to see him and tells him to pull some trucks for him and in the end keeps his red coat. In the last story, after being teased by Gordon, he pulls the Express and gives the big engine a showing up by proving that he is not the only engine who can pull the Express after all.

The drama unfolds during the turbulent years of the argument between King Henry II Plantagenet and Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, concerning juridical authority in church matters.
After the tragic deaths of their parents, brothers Simon and Edmund Audemer are separated. Edmund becomes a page in the court of King Henry II, while Simon becomes a scribe in the household of Thomas Becket.
Willard's use of the literary device of the two brothers allows the reader a "first-hand" glimpse into both the characters of Thomas Becket and Henry II as well as into the climate of the times.
The book is full of exciting episodes (including a miracle), and interesting characters. Barbara Willard's If All the Swords in England presents a timeless story of courage and conscience. It is also an excellent introduction to the heavier Becket by Anouilh and T.S. Eliot's Murder in the Cathedral. Grades 5-7.
