Freddy James, the main character, will 'tug' at your heart.
Believable characters, setting, and plot for Georgia in 1947. Main characters are Freddy James Johnson, age 13; his mother-Elenora; and younger brother, Kenny Lee. Supporting characters are 'Big Kenny' - Freddy's father who deserts his family; Ms. Priddy (the town's owner & overseer of all); Theodora, the cook at the saloon; and Ms. Suzanna Doolittle, who gives French lessons to the more elite ladies of their society. It is humorous at times and oddly sad at others. Language & dialect are pure 'Southern'. The main plot consists of the fact that 'Big Kenny' Johnson leaves home one day and never returns. His oldest son, Freddy James-age 13, takes on the responsibility of keeping his family together and providing shelter and food. The best way he sees to do this is to move his Mother and brother to town. They all would rather stay on the family farm - after all its been in their family for generations; however, Freddy knows thats impossible. So, he goes off to town one day - not telling anyone where he is going - and finds a job at the local saloon doing odd jobs. As luck would have it, he finds a room to rent at Ms. Priddy's. To find out what lies ahead for Freddy James and his family, you'll need to read the book. I promise you won't be disappointed.

believable characters, setting, and plot
I loved this book! There are several reasons for my enthusiasm. It's setting is 1947 on a Georgia farm. I am a history 'buff' and have a rural background. I felt I could relate to Freddy James Johnson (age 13-Protagionist) situation. Freddy's father, Big Kenny, deserts his family and it is up to 13-year old Freddy James to try to keep his family together. Although they would all prefer to stay on the family farm - it is impossible. Freddy James goes into the local town on his own. He finds a job and a place to rent where he, his Mama and younger brother, Kenny Lee, can live. I can't tell you all the 'life situations' Freddy James faces as he tries to keep his family together. I will tell you, however, that he matures throughtout the story. It is a 'must read' for an English class or a History class focusing on this period of time. It will make you cry, laugh, and gain respect for Freddy James Johnson. In my opinion, it is realistic historical fiction at its best. Also, I forgot to mention - I read this book by audiocassette. If you've not tried a recorded book yet, then, it's time you gave it a try.

Perfect Book
This is the sweetest book I've seen in years. It is, on the surface, a story about a little puppy who realizes he can make mistakes and still be a "perfect puppy". Underneath, it's a message to children about being loved unconditionally.

Perfect Puppy Gets First Prize
My son and I love this one. As a family without a dog this book well describes a sweet story about the unconditioned friendship a young girl and her puppy come to discover. I would highly recommend it for children ages 3-7. My four year old asks that I read this to him everyday since we got it. He walks around with it, turns the pages and has memorized much of the story. Having other books by this author, Stephanie Calmenson, we say it is winner! Makes a great present for a child, with or without that perfect puppy!

I bought it for myself, and I'm an adult!!
I was browsing at my local bookstore for a Bible. I wanted a Catholic version with the Deuterocanonicals/Apocrypha and I wanted a Bible that was comfortable to hold, light weight, with a nice comfortable font for easy reading (some Bibles are printed so that you need a magnifying glass, others are so big and heavy you need to take up weightlifting!). This was the only one that fit the bill. I was looking for the NAB version, but am now glad I got this one, which is TEV (Todays English Version). It's a wonderfully fluid translation, not at all stilted like some versions. If you don't mind a pink Bible with cute childrens illustrations, this is a great Bible. It has very nice maps. It comes in a white leatherette version too. Unfortunately, it's not a red-letter edition, and it's not the typical study version with multiple scripture links. But for children that shouldn't matter.

Wonderful Bible for Catholic children to grow with!
Wonderful Bible for Catholic children to grow with! This is a great first full text Bible with footnotes for beginners. Brief introductions with outlines precede each book. The color Precious Moments illustrations call attention to Jesus Love. The Presentation page makes this a great gift with the Record of Sacraments filled out for children to see that their journey has begun.

The Princess in the Pigpen

You will love this book and wish that they have another!
Princess in the Pigpen is the best, I want to give it 5 stars. Elizabeth was really sick and Sukie first gave her a bath and dried her off and then put her in bed.
When she lay down in the bed, this light struck her in the face when Sukie opened the curtains. When she rolled over away from the light, she was in a different place. This man was standing by her.
He asked her "What are you doing here, miss?" in amazement. She started calling for her dog and Sukie but they didn't come. She tried so many times but they still didn't come. Than this woman came in and put her hand on her forehead. The lady said that she (Elizabeth) was ill so they took her to the doctor and she took a look at her. She took off Elizabeth's dress and gave her some medicine to make her feel better.
After they took her to the doctors, they took her to get their daughter. They hate each other at first, but after a little bit later, they become friends. They have a lot of fun together.
The girl goes into the barn to get Elizabeth back home to get some medicine for her mother. They do a lot to get back home. I know I left out a lot but I'm running out of time. Trust me, you'll love this book!!!!!!

an charming story for young readers
this book details the story of a young princess from the 1600's who is transported into the future to the year 1988. the charming fairy tale of sorts follows her story as she befriends the family whose pigpen she has appeared in, manages to find her way back home, and saves her dying mother in the process. well written to be pleasurable reading, its the perfect choice for that special little girl in your life.

Principles and Practice of Stress Management
Published in Hardcover by Random House Children's Books (1992)
Authors: Paul M. Lehrer, Thomas the Tank Engine, and Robert L. Woolfork
Amazon base price: $1.25
Average review score:

The Best Stress Management Theory Text for Professionals
Having been a practitioner and trainer in the field of Stress management (even helped develop questions for the Stress Management Certification Exam) it has been my responsibility to learn lots of different models and techniques for helping people understand and manage stress.

This book presents the most important, most effective and powerful models and techniques, many written by their original developers. It is a valuable, unique resource, primarily for professionals and practitioners. It provides both theoretical and practical technique information. But it is probably not the best book for the average layman wanting to deal with stress more effectively. Laymen (and professionals) should consider the Relaxation and Stress Workbook, in that case. But professionals will want the Lehrer Woolfolk, compilation because of the detailed theoretical grounding provided for the techniques, which include Autogenic training, Clinically Standardized meditation, Progressive muscle relaxation, biofeedback. And many more.

I can't emphasize enough that these are not just chapters written by anyone. This is the "Woodstock" of stress theory and practice books, with chapters by the "stars" of the field.

Excellent book, very clear and scientific
This is an excellent book about stress managment. The autors give a cler idea about the use of many stress managment techniques, including progressive muscular relaxation, autogenic training, meditation, yoga based therapy, cognitive approaches to stress, exercise and others. All the articles have a lot of referencces to reserach results with the techniques, wich show us the scientificity of the methods. It also includes some chapters with the comparation of the research results with many techniques and their applicability to clinical problems. I would recomend this book to all psychologist interested in the field.

My favorite Her Story book.
This book is about Priscilla Foster, a 12 year old girl living in Salem in 1692. Priscilla's friends have started accusing innocent people of being witches and before she knows it Priscilla has joined them in accusing people. Priscilla wants to stop but she finds herself unable to. This is my favorite Her Story book.

Best Her Story Book
Priscilla Foster is one of the girls who see witches in the Salem Witch Trials. She tells her grand-daughter about her tragic and terrifying tale. Gives a must-read account of the trials.

A tender story about very real siblings
I loved this book! The kids are so real, the parents' reactions are right on the money and the illustrations are warm and cozy. It's true-to-life and reassuring. Share it with a young person you love.

Real world sisters!
FINALLY! A book about sisters that doesn't sugar-coat reality! This book is endearing as it strikes a chord for anyone who has really lived life with a sibling. While being true to real life sisterhood, the book still gives a wonderful lesson about life. The illustrations further enhance the book with details that will remind almost anyone of some memorable instance in their own life. This book will be a classic!

5th grader, Gonzalo Agurto says, "This is a good book!"
I read Wishbone Riddle of the Wayward Books. Wishbone and his owner Joe Tableot and his friends end up trying to sold a riddle. They ended up solving that the books weren't stolen so the person who broke in didn't go to jail. So, Joe, Wishbone, and their friends got congratulated. As a 5th grader this book was very good because I like to try and solve mysteries as it goes on. By Gonzalo Agurto at Nazareth School

It's a wonerful book.
I think this is the best series for kids and it has a cute dog named WishBone. You have to read it.

A very educational book with a spunky girl.
I really liked this book. I learned a lot. It was interesting. Sally was a spunky girl. She had the courage during a bad time to help her family.

Very good book in the Her Story series.
This book is about Sally Bradford, a young Confederate girl during the Civil War. This gives a Southern perspective of the war. Sally's father and brother are away fighting for the south. Even though the Brafords own no slaves the Yankees still burn her house and the family must flee to Richmond. Then, Sally's brother gets typhus and is sent to a Richmond hospital. He needs quinine but the stores have none because of the war. Sally must travel across enemy lines to get medicine for her brother before it's too late. This book showed that there was more to the Civil War then the slavery issue.
