Adrian, the apprentice, has learned the art of capturing true likenesses on canvas, and it is for this that the king admires him so. But people don't often like to see their real faces, and when Adrian finishes the portrait the nobles and ladies of the court, they all gather to abuse him for "misrepresenting" them in image and they try to force him to change the portrait to be more flattering- and untruthful.
The Young Artist is a wonderful story about artistic integrity and the meaning of success. It is accompanied by truly magical pictures, created by a man who is himself a master artist. I love the story, but Locker's paintings for his story are what make this book an enduring favorite of mine. I highly recommend that anyone interested in children's literature find and read this and anything else by Thomas Locker they can get their hands on!

This is an extremely informative and educational book for teens, adults, gays or straight people. I strongly believe that anyone who reads this book will benefit greatly from it. This book has hundreds of answers to questions about the AIDS virus, how it's spread and prevention. It includes touching interviews with people who are infected. It's a real eye opener that provides facts. The book is well written and easy to understand.
The young men in my group home have commented about what a SUPERB and EDUCATIONAL book this is. They like that the book is geared towards people of all ages, sex, race and economical backgrounds. Too bad this book isn't in schools.
I strongly recommend reading this book and passing it on to your children, family members and friends. It is worth reading and after gaining this type of knowledge, might help save lives.
It was definately worth 5 points and more......

The search engines contain a thousand supplementary references to Carver or Emeagwali.
The stories are filled with the themes of perseverance and overcoming obstacles.
The inventions described include massively parallel supercomputers, petroleum reservoir simulation and oil recovery, uses of peanut, lasers for eye surgery, and a new way to make rocket fuel.
Excerpts read: "Emeagwali programmed the Connection Machine to make 3.1 billion calculations per second.... This speed was a new world record in 1989.... The record breaking speed of Emeagwali's invention helped people understand the value of parallel computing."
The photographs of the inventors and the illustrations of their inventions make this a useful book for K-12 school assignments on inventors.
This book is a must for math, science and black history related school assignments.

My only problem with this chapter is that it wasn't copyedited well (does anyone know how to get in touch with Thomas Brown or American Psychiatric Press?)
On the last line of page 584 it reads: "The agenda can prevent the therapy from becoming focused on a "crisis du jour," whereby therapists deal only with the crises and catastrophes that patients bring into the session Then a little further down before and after page 587: To set the stage for other techniques to work, the activation of the beliefs Even with these two glaring errors, the chapter is still worth it. I remain anonymous because I have been fired twice for having ADHD (If you don't know that the Americans with Disabilites Act is a big joke, then you haven't been paying attention (no pun intended)).
