An excellent resource for young Catholics!
As a catechist teacher I come across alot of text books. Thisis one of the better ones. Especially for those first and secondgraders just beginning to understand their faith and its traditions. Thank goodness our RE director chose this dictionary over others. The colorful pictures and clear explanations give valuable meaning to things that aren't always addressed during mass or other religious instruction. I highly recommend it.

Fascinating Study of Children's Folklore
This volume consists of articles on children's folklore. The book provides various ways of studying the games, songs, rhymes, and other forms of folk culture that children express. It is an excellent resource for learning to understand ways that children's culture leads insight into the worldview of children. I also am impressed with the ways that the study of children's culture leads one to think about common and implicit aspects of adults' culture that form important ways of thinking about life -- but need to be critically examined. This volume should interest anyone who is curious about kids, but it is also academically-oriented and scholarly.

The Role of Children's Literature in Christian Education
I first read this book in 1990 after it was assigned for a course on ministry with children I took in a graduate school for Christian Education. After 12 years I am still actively using it. The strength of the book is that it makes a convincing argument concerning the necessary of using children's literature in the Christian nurture of children. If you want children to learn to read and love the Bible, you need to use more than the Bible. This book convinced me of that. It demonstrates in practical ways how to use children's literature in connection with the Bible to give children a fuller understanding of the world God has made. Children's literature becomes a bridge linking the world of the Bible and the world of adults with the world of children. In addition to arguing its point and making excellent suggestions on how to use children's literature in the Christian education of children, the book also includes an annotated booklist of the best children's literature, the age groups for which it is written and a summary of the stories and themes you will find in each of the books. I highly recommend this book for parents, teachers, pastors and directors of Christian Education.

Cloud Dance

Cloud Dance
Thomas Locker creates an interesting way to learn about clouds in this beautifully illustrated book. As the reader turns the pages of this book, they encounter numerous types of clouds. The first illustration shows the many different sizes and shapes clouds can assume, from the light and wispy cirrus cloud to the puffy cumulus cloud. With each turn of the page, clouds are seen in different seasons and times of day, under various weather conditions. The illustrations are eye appealing oil paintings. As you view each picture, it is like you are standing on the ground and seeing the vast sky with the clouds creating a mosaic of lights, shapes, and colors. You can almost feel the rain hitting your face when you look at the painting depicting clouds in a rain storm. The painting of the clouds that "shimmer in the moonlight" gives the reader a sense of calm. Each painting in this book causes the reader to feel some emotion--from the suppressed anger of a developing thunderstorm to the warm peace of a sunset. At the end of the book the author includes factual information about clouds. The scientific names are given for all the clouds along with a description. Answers are also given for such questions as "How are clouds formed?" and "How high does the sky reach?" This book would be a good way to introduce a science unit on clouds and weather. The illustrations would stimulate a student's imagination and could be a starting point for them to begin thinking about what clouds look like at different times and in a variety of conditions. Cloud Dance would be a valuable addition to anyone's library.

A boy experiences struggles and successes in his new home.
Cass Kennedy is used to the fast pace of Minneapolis. When his family moves the North Shore of Lake Superior, many transitions ensue. He no longer has the time he would like with his dad, all of his friends are far away, and the class leader/bully, Ansel, picks on him but never gets caught. A shared love for a secret hideaway and a crisis bring the two boys together. Cass and Ansel realize that they have more in common than they realized. This is a great story for children on the move. The transitions experienced are dealt with in a realistic manner. The boy's feelings of abandonment by his father and his subsequent hiding from his family is typical of how many children retreat into themselves during times of change and stress. Whether a read-a-loud or read-alone, this quality book is highly recommended for children 8-13, boys and girls alike. The timeless cycle of chaos, confusion, and lonliness during a move is realistically depicted in this book.

Good illustrations, great rhymes
My son has loved Thomas the tank engine trains, stories, and videos since he was 2.5yrs old. We've progressed from simple board books to more complicated story lines. Since we purchased this book, he has wanted me to read it to him every night. I like the fact that the words are large enough so that we can start word identification, and the story is interesting as well! Also, all the popular engines are illustrated in full color and their numbers are evident for both color and number recognition. I want to know where we can buy more Dr Seuss beginner books with Thomas the Tank engine stories! Additionally, there are some adorable rhymes in this volume that are reminiscent of Dr Seuss.
