A woman far ahead of her time
An amazing account of a time and woman like no other. The Countess di Castiglione can be looked upon as a precursor to many artists that have explored self-portraiture, though her "art" captured her narcissism more than any underlying concept or expression. In beautiful costumes from her personal collection, the Countess was photographed and then had artists paint over the portrait to create scenes from history, current operas, or novels of the time. This book compliments the wonderful exhibit recently displayed by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. I had the pleasure of seeing the exhibit and I was floored by the effortless artistry by which the Countess expressed her deep-seated self love (and loathing). I highly recommend finding out more about this beautiful woman, so scandalous in her time, so historically important in ours.

A delicious introduction to Italian desserts.
This was the first book I bought on Italian Desserts (the hard cover edition)and it is the one I reach for more often than not.
Although not a huge book, I feel the author has done an amazing job of giving a tour of Italian desserts. Along with covering everything from cakes, cookies, tarts, frozen dessert, fruit, cheese and dessert wines to name a few chapters, Michele Scicolone as an author is a joy to read. Each recipe has an introduction, nothing to time consuming to read. She may tell of the origin of a dessert or about the people whose recipe she is using or a helpful hint when preparing the dessert. Throught out the book you will find tips and hints that are like being in the kitchen with someone standing by to answer questions as they pop up. Each recipe I have used has been a great success and has not needed any alterations to make it "work." Basically La Dolce Vita is a book with clear and concise directions given in the warm hearted tone of friend sharing a recipe.

Packed with wonderful educational websites....
Although I had solely purchased this book for a college course, I can honestly say it is one book I will not be reselling. The amount of helpful sites located within the book have saved me countless hours on the Internet. Any educator would benefit from the 70+ pages of websites it offers. For the money, this was a [deal]!

A Different Conquistador
Catalina de Erauso grew up in a Basque convent, but spent most of her days as a soldier in the Spanish army in the mid-1600s. This brief autobiography is not a typical tale of military exploits. Although brawling constitutes much of the action, this is the story of a female transvestite. De Erauso dressed as a man to escape from her convent in 1599. Keeping up the disguise for reasons that included an attraction to "pretty faces," she traveled to the Americas in 1603 and fought in the conquest of Chile. When finally forced to reveal her true sex, de Erauso attained brief celebrity in the Baroque world. In 1624, the pope granted her permission to continue her life garbed in male attire. A forword and an excellent introduction by the translators places this fascinating story in historical context.

Teaches young readers about positive values
Written by educator and public speaker Robert Bohlken, Listening To The Mukies And Their Character Building Adventures is a very highly entertaining collection of children's stories that are not only enjoyable in their own right as simple entertainments, but which also serve a deeper purpose. These stories (which feature a charming race of furry creatures called Mukies), teach young readers about positive values, including tolerance, learning that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and the importance of not letting emotions such as anger take control of one's actions. School or family activities, as well as thought-provoking questions pepper this educational and recommended anthology.

The Little Church Mouse of The Loretto Chapel
The latest book by author, June Kirkpatrick, is a beautiful retelling of the history of the charming Loretto Chapel and its beloved staircase which is considered a joyous miracle. The story is told with warmth and love through the eyes and heart of the local church mouse. This lovely book, in words and pictures, came out shortly before Christmas, 2000 and when I read it to my students and gran grandchildren they all agreed that it gave them a wonderful feeling of love, joy and hope.

We are all looking for the next book from the talented author, June Kirkpatrick and the gifted artist, Michele M. K. Brokaw.
