a beautiful testament to the power of family and creativity.
The story of family history and oral tradition is brought to life by artist/illustrator, Michele Wood. The elements neccesary to convey the use of personal history into the creative process is acheived by the perfect match of text and illustration. This title could be brought to use in several arenas of childhood education; art apprectiation, exploration of the creative process, oral history as well as a springboard for discusion on several levels. Folk art books for children such as this and ones by Mattie Lou O'Kelly, etc. are few and far between. This one should insprire a new generation of folk and naive artists.

Couldn't face summer without it
Michele Anna Jordan has the ability to cover a single ingredient in depth and create recipes, a lot of recipes that celebrate the foodstuff without making a cliche out of it. In "Tomatoes" she presents us with exquisite recipes that celebrate the old time, comfort foods in a solid and secure way. She also gives us some new and adventurous dishes to try, ones that no doubt will become favored summer classics as time goes by. A great little book for tomato junkies, young and old.

Suburban animals made exciting and important in an ecosystem
For those of us surrounded by the omnipresent gray squirrel they seem banal and often a pest. But for my inner city Latino children in a bilingual first grade, this book made real the interaction of animals in a suburban neighborhood. They understood how the squirrel interacts with other animals - often stealing their food; how the squirrel helps grow trees by hiding acorns (we learned about acorns the same week). The picture of the squirrel eating acorns was perfect. We learned how birds depend on feeders for their food. The illustrations were lovely and inventive - they especially liked the photo of the squirrel sleeping with his tail over his head for a shade (we acted it out with our hands) and the dog chasing the squirrel and cat. The neighborhood was unfamiliar to them as the housing was very different but they loved the animals. This book was a most positive teaching aide.

Very nice child's animal book
Smithsonian wildlife/animal books are generally very good, and this is no exception. It's a small book, but the illustrations of the gray squirrel are very lifelike and charming. This is a brief narrative of exciting events in the day of a gray squirrel: stealing acorns from a chipmunk; looking for food; brief danger, and excape, from a cat and dog (but with a happy ending, of course). A good reader for young children.

This book is definitely worth every penny and you won't regr
She knew it was wrong to go in her cousin's place to Heath hallows Abbey. But Arabella was dead, and she, Caroline, was alone and destitute. And the wealthy Hawkesworths would never know the difference... As it turned out, there was one Hawkesworth who had met her before: cold and sardonic Ross. But if he remembered her, he didn't not reveal it by so much as a flicker of his dark gaze. Or perhaps he had too many secrets of his own to worry about hers. For, as Caroline would soon discover, the tragedies of the past cast a dark and deadly shadow over Heath Hallows. And as the wild bleakness of the Yorkshire moors drove a chill into her heart, and the crumbling walls seemed to whisper of evil, Caroline Whitwood began to sense that someone did not want her there. Someone who watched while she took her solitary walks and waited for her in the shadows. Watching and waiting for the chance to keep her away-forever-from the secrets of Heath Hallows.

I very much recommend this book to those who love Gothic mystery. A wonderful read and a fine example of Gothic writing!

Surprise, surprise.
It was by chance that I came acrosss this book, since I was looking for a book on Telecommunications. I ended up reading this book more than the one I originally planned to read.
Michele Martin's book is an easy read and easily accessible, even for one who is not too familiar with the telephone technology.

At times I found myself laughing at how the telephone was used during the early years of its development (askign operators for the time, learning about sports scores, shopping, and group chats). It's as if she was describing how we currently use cell phones and the internet for that matter.

What's also interesting was how she used the feminist framework to dissect the development of the telephone. It was obviously well-researched, and full of amusing anecdotes.

If you want to be entertained and at the same time learn about gender and technology, this is the book you should have.

A very creative and suspensful novel!
I enjoyed this book more than any romance novel I have ever read. The suspense was so well tied in that I couldn't put the book down. I felt that the story line was excellent because it puts the reader in a fantasy world. I liked the creative ending and never guessed as to what was going to happen! The story was very easy to follow and I felt as if I knew the characters (excellent detail). I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a romance!!

A sure cure for the blues!
A sure cure for the blues -- any book by Michele Bardsley.

When reading Housewife for Rent, I was immediately drawn into the light-hearted romp of a romance. The premise -- a 15-year old daughter advertises for a man -- for her mother. The resulting prospective dates are a hoot and a half. A timely intervention by the daughter's math teacher saves the mom from dating hell, however his idea to be her pretend fiancee opens up even a bigger can of worms. The ending is satisfying. You can't go wrong with this one.
