A true delight!
E-mail has become the current method of correspondence for the masses, but Every Monday in the Mailbox returns us to the delightful experience of finding the treasure of a letter addressed to you in the mailbox. What makes it more endearing is that the letters are exchanged between a young girl and her grandmother.

I come from a family where letter writing is a part of life, like breathing. We can look forward to letters from Mom weekly, and she has instilled in us the value of this dying art. If you can get your hands on a copy, consider yourself lucky!

If you read one book this year...
Actually, I've ready more than one book this year...many more, but this was my favorite. Written as a reflective narrative, not unlike Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, the author puts forth a story of a man traveling across the Sahara by bus and traveling through the history of Europeans in Africa. The title comes from the last line in Joseph Conrad's novel, "Heart of Darkness." Linqvist is a master storyteller, and the story he tells helps one understand where much about the origins of racism. This book is timely in that in the US, race relations are going backwards. Lindavist shows how many of the "scientific" assumptions that people hold about Africans are based more on political ideologies carried over from the 1800s rather than real science.

I don't think that many people will read this book because of its subject matter. It's a topic that many people want to avoid or deny. Regardless of this, Sven Lindqvist should be praised and recognized for this fascinating and enlightening book.

The Dog Training Bible
Joan Embery's book is the best book I have read on training a dog. This book covers it all: picking the right dog for you, puppy-proofing your home, early basic training, advanced training, solving behavior problems, grooming, nutrition, traveling tips, preventive health care, and even first aid.

The book is easy to follow even for a beginner. I bought the book when I got my first dog and followed it to the "T". People can not believe how well trained my dog is and ask if I had him professionally trained!

This book is a must have for all dog owners!

From a homeschooling mother
As a homeschooling mother, I highly recommend this book. It's very thorough in its review of grammar, yet not too hard for my 7th grader. The vocabulary is challenging, so it might be a little difficult for some students who have never done sentence diagramming. For this reason, I would recommend it for upper middle school to high school level. The book provides lots of diagramming practice, in the 3-4 different activities at the end of each chapter and review tests after every other chapter. There is also a brief review of the grammar concept taught, at the end of each chapter. Dr. DeVincentis-Hayes also provides a beginning diagnostic exam and an exit exam/mastery test. There are many diagrammed examples throughout each chapter, and all the answers are in the back of the book. I have to admit, I learned sentence diagramming all over again, at the same time as my son.

As a final comment, my 7th grade son told me recently, "Mom, I have to admit, sentence diagramming is still hard, but I like it! It's like a jigsaw puzzle where all the pieces finally fit together." (Thank you, Dr. De-Vincentis-Hayes.)

Grant Wood and Little Sister Nan : Essays and Remembrances

Essays and Rememberances
"Grant Wood and Little Sister Nan draws Nan Wood Graham out of the larger tapestry of Wood's life and gives definition to her loyal support of her brother and her own achievements. She was a pathfinder whose contributions extend into areas that cannot be easily measured." writes Mary Bennett, Special Collections Coordinator for the State Historical Society of Iowa.

Julie Jensen McDonald pieces together the spirit of the Wood family during the demanding and daring times of the 1920s and 30s, capturing the substance that nurtured the talent, resourcefulness, and fierce loyalty demonstrated by Nan Wood Graham until her death in 1990 at the age of ninety-one years. Intriguing and enchanting details, garnered from the vast collection of Grant Wood memorabilia now held by the Davenport Art Museum, and other sources, profile the woman behind the face in American Gothic. Nan tells how she was wooed by her brother into posing for the painting by a promise that no one would recognize her. As the Gothic couple became one of the most celebrated images in art history, she speaks candidly of the joy as well as the vulnerability of "celebrity," including the innumerable parodies which depict a wide range of social conditions.

Joan Liffring-Zug Bourret, Penfield Press publisher, presents a pictorial documentary along with a"Passages in Time" of the Wood family, and rare insights from friends, acquaintances and admirers of Nan and her brother Grant Wood.

Essays by friends and close associates reveal the extent of Nan Wood Graham's devotion to the memory of her brother and to the places where they spent their early years. Personal letters and other commentaries provide a view of her fondness for time and place: early years in Anamosa, Iowa, growing up in Cedar Rapids, the generosity of friends in the Amana Colonies in times of great need, and the support of friends and mentors in the Iowa City and Davenport areas. Nan was often cast as a "fierce guardian of the truths of her brother's life." The Epilogue "Myths About Grant Wood," based on several years of research with Nan and other sources by the late John Zug, presents some truths to dispel many of the myths that often accompany notoriety.

This book adds a dimension to the woman in American Gothic. At age eighty three, Nan said the painting saved her life from being drab. Even though she didn't think the "painted" lady looked anything like her when it was first displayed, she had now decided that: "We look a lot alike. She's really become me."

Happy Texan
In perusing the library for books on Texas gardening, I came across this title. I almost didn't include it in my stash. Upon flipping through the pages, there weren't any "purdy" pictures. Boy am I glad I brought it home! I started putting a sticky note on the pages I wanted to photocopy and ended up putting one on every other page--that's a lot of sticky notes! So I had to buy it! This book is not only an up to date resource list for Texas by region or city, but has an information header in each category. This is invaluable. Sounds like a "resource" book would be pretty dry--but it's not. It's fun and well written and will go with me in my car always here in San Antonio and thru out Texas. My only regret is that it is a special order with 4-6 week delivery. Don't know why since it was published in 1999.
